Spring 2009
Billy recently received the University of Alberta’s prestigious Rutherford Award for
Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. He has been teaching, coaching, and leading
workshops for over 25 years. With a background as a teacher and NCAA athlete and
coach, he went on for a doctorate in sport and exercise psychology at the University of
Illinois. After being in school for way too long, Billy had pigeon-holed himself into a
significant, but giggle-resistant life as an academic. With several years of specialized
training he is now able to pump irony.
Billy’s speaking and workshops inspire participants to have greater joy, fun, play, and
satisfaction in their lives. Dr. Strean’s high energy and engaging presentations are
supported by a depth of education and experience working with and learning from
some of the world’s top achievers in sport, business, education, performing arts, and
medicine.

President’s Message
Sue Hocken, Red Deer
Inside this issue:
Welcome to Spring 2009!
President’s Message
2
Our workplaces challenge us to continue to provide excellence in occupational health
practice amidst the impacts of the economic downturn, shifting priorities in the health
care system and increasingly complex and demanding work loads. Our association
continues to realign to be able to position itself to respond and support our membership
during these challenging times. Change, change, change – always a challenge!

Recent research by Graff-Reed regarding volunteering is both startling and troubling.
Volunteer rates have remained relatively constant over the last twenty years, but the
number of hours being offered is dropping among the greatest majority of those who
volunteer. When about one million volunteers quit between 1997 and 2000, the total
number of volunteer hours didn't decline. A small number of typically older volunteers
made up the difference by working longer and harder. How long will that sustain an
organization? Boards across the country are having more trouble recruiting new
members. Our association is no different. Our focus needs to be on sharing our
experiences, mentoring new members and adjusting our association's volunteerism based
on the current trends to best utilize our members time and effort.

I encourage you to stay actively involved. We plan to provide a regular update from the

vibrant, responsive and effective. Take time to consider what your role will be this year. I encourage you to volunteer, join a committee, and voice your issues and concerns. Make sure we hear your views. It will help shape the

Finance Committee:
Holly Isaman, AOHNA Provincial Treasurer
Over the last few months finance related activities have remained busy. The
treasury role was further defined with the membership database upkeep
going to the AOHNA administrator. Processes such as job advertisements
with the association, movement of funds between chapters/committees, and
membership processing were reorganized to provide better documentation
within the AOHNA records.

In December 2008, the North Central Chapter closed their bank accounts and
amalgamated their funds into the AOHNA provincial finances, bringing us one
step closer to our goal. Central Chapter is the only chapter that has yet to complete this task.
Last year’s financial records were sent for the annual review to the accountant in fall 2008 and
we are just awaiting the final draft to arrive from their office.
Although it has been great to work with those on the AOHNA executive, I have regretfully
resigned from the treasury position. Bookkeeping tasks will now be done by a bookkeeper who
will have the knowledge and time to take the AOHNA to the next level by integrating
services such as online payment options for members with the existing accounting software. I
anticipate great things to come!

Since the last meeting in December the following work has taken place:
Terry MacDonald
Web Coordinator
•
Purchased another 100 blank logo cards.
•
Created and purchased 500 AOHNA business cards suitable for personal use
or handing out at the marketing booth. The business cards contain
our logo, our contact information and include our CARNA mailing
address.
•
Received approval from the Provincial Executive to move forward in
creating a new AOHNA information package and brochure. We
have contracted with Bryan Mills Iradesso Communications for this
work. The cost estimate for this work is $2,650.00. Iradesso will
assist us in brainstorming ideas, creating the concept and design,
and providing mock-ups which will be subject to our approval.
AOHNA will be responsible for supplying the text for both
documents, editing the text once submitted, and approving the
design mock-ups. Photography selection will be extra; however,
we have a choice of selecting stock photography, using our old
photographs, or hiring a photographer. Printing the brochures and
booklets is not included in the consulting costs.
•
Collective brainstorming from the executive group resulted in the creation of a bright, shiny new tag line for our
marketing campaign. “Nursing Expertise at Work - Healthy Workers, Healthy Business” This tag line
better expresses what occupational health nurses “do” and will replace “Nurses Work”. This tag line will be
integrated into our new marketing tools. Thanks to Stacey Lytwyn for coming up with the final words.
•
Inventory pictures and pricing were submitted to Maureen Krill for posting on the website.
•
New logo inventory is being contemplated for the May conference.

Highlights:
November 5, 2008 – Seven members met at the Lonkar Services Ltd. Boardroom; Guest Speaker, Alison Whittmire, gave
a very interesting and informative presentation on Breast and Colorectal Cancer Screening and the efforts that are being
made throughout the Health Regions to increase awareness and to explain the necessity for screening.
December 4, 2008 – A delicious dinner was enjoyed at the Red Stone Bar and Grill in Red Deer by six members who
were able to attend. A Christmas gift – Chinese Auction followed with the gift theme being “Take Time to Pamper
Yourself”. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
February 4, 2009 – Four members attended the meeting at the Occupational Health Solutions office. Janice Hazlett
provided interesting facts about the Nurse Legal Consultant course that is being offered in Calgary and in the USA. If the
course is pursued through the facilitator in Calgary, a certificate is not obtained as the facilitator is not officially certified.
The facilitator in the USA is the founder of the Nurse Legal Consultant Course and the Nurse Legal Consultant is a sub–
specialty group of the American Nurses Association. A certificate is received upon completion of the course in the USA.
For additional information: [email protected] (Canadian course) and www.LegalNurse.com (American course).
April 18, 2009 – a one day relaxing retreat is being planned at Sylvan Lake with Virginia Lynn White as the facilitator.
Virginia has numerous things planned that will allow one to become inspired holistically.
June 3, 2009 – a wind-up party for the year is being planned with golf at the Sylvan Lake Golf course and dinner to follow.

College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
The College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) is developing a practice
framework to enable prescribing by registered nurses who are not nurse practitioners.
Focus Groups were held to discuss the areas of practice where this might be appropriate along with
the elements of the framework, requirements and parameters for RN prescribing.
Target groups included Correctional Nurses, Home Care Nurses, Community Health Nurses, Mental Health, Travel Clinic
Nurses, Primary Care Networks and Chronic Disease Nurses, Occupational Health Nurses, and Educators.
Meetings were attended by Allison Santo, Viola Wilton & Linda Pearson to share the focus from an Occupational
Health perspective.
The following was reported from the Westlock meeting:
•
It was attended by about 10 people including diabetic educators, emergency
response, ER, outpatient people, directors of health units, chronic pain, etc.
•
CARNA was asking in what settings this process may be used
•
They are looking at the same model that pharmacists used
•
Class 1 and 2 medications
•
They still need buy-in from physicians
•
Estimating a 3 year process
It was noted at the AOHNA Executive Meeting that a lot of nurses are under medical
directives and are therefore doing the work anyway.

The CARNA Provincial Council has approved a motion to initiate mandatory reporting of the bloodborne pathogens hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HAV).
CARNA is seeking input from relevant Alberta Organizations.
AOHNA members Barb Saint (Edmonton) and Roxanne McKendry (Calgary) are representing the AOHNA in providing
input to CARNA on their new requirement for reporting blood borne virus infections (BBVI). Starting next year CARNA
members will have to report their BBVI status at the time of annual registration. Although, the criteria and procedures
have already been established by a provincial working group, we have been asked to assist by reviewing the educational
materials and written protocols.

The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission publishes interpretive
bulletins, information sheets, and booklets related to human rights law.
Interpretive bulletins offer a comprehensive discussion of important human
rights topics that are of importance to Occupational Health practitioners. They
cite case law, provide descriptions of legal principles drawn from the case law,
and offer practical information.
The Commission has recently released two new publications:
Drug and Alcohol Dependencies in Alberta Workplaces clarifies the
Commission’s role in preventing discrimination against employees who have
drug and alcohol dependencies. The new information sheet:
• Outlines the situations in which an employee may have the basis to
make a human rights complaint related to drug and alcohol
dependencies;
• Provides information about the responsibilities of the employer and the
employee in the accommodation process; and
• Informs the public that the Commission does not have jurisdiction to tell
an employer when or whether they can require a drug or alcohol test.
Obtaining and Responding to Medical Information in the
Workplace was developed in response to the many inquiries that the
Commission receives from both employers and employees about medical
information issues related to medical absences and an employee’s medical
ability to work. The publication will help employers, employees, and physicians
achieve good communication and effective workplace accommodations for
employees.

Adult Learners – Getting the Biggest Bang for Your Professional Development Buck
Janice Krushinsky, Education & Events Coordinator
In these times of economic and job market uncertainty, it is increasingly important for us all to maintain and build on
our competency competitive advantage. As consumers with a wide range of continuing education opportunities to
choose from, it is important to keep in mind what is important to us as adult learners. Here’s some important
considerations:
Learning goals and objectives should be realistic and applicable to the “real world” and our personal and
professional needs.
Activities should give us some control over our own learning.
Learning should be relevant and related to our day-to-day activities, with direct and concrete application to our
real work.
Opportunities for non-judgmental peer support are included in the learning experience.
Opportunities are provided for us to practice what we have learned and to receive specific and constructive
feedback.
Small group activities are provided which allow for sharing and reflecting on learning experiences.
Learning activities build on previous learning and experience to achieve success and make effective use of our
time.
