The remarkable success of THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola is the result of hard work,
attention to details and world-class commitment to excellence. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have the best
golfers on the PGA TOUR. However, without extraordinary volunteer dedication and leadership, this special
event would not be nearly as succesful.

Golf Etiquette with Chad Parker
Greetings, Volunteers. Much of
what makes golf such a wonderful
sport is the fact that it demands that
golfers behave in consideration for
one another. Proper etiquette on the
course is fundamental to the game.
The following points should be
observed by all who play the game:
• Play only one ball on the course,
leaving practice and experimentation
to the range.
• Be ready when it is your turn to play
and minimize your practice swings.
• Try to visualize your next shot and
how you are going to play it before
you get to your ball. Study your line
of putt while others are putting.
• Minimize the damage you do to the
course with your practice swings.
• Replace divots and/or repair your
divots by filling them in with the
sand provided on the golf carts. On
the putting green, repair your pitch
mark plus at least one more!

“East Lake & Bobby Jones, 2007” by Steve Penley, acrylic on canvas
W
ell-known Atlanta artist Steve Penley was commissioned by the Coca-Cola
Company to create a painting for this year’s TOUR Championship. Combining
the legacy of Bobby Jones with East Lake Golf Club, Penley effectively portrayed the
essence of “golf with a purpose.” Coca-Cola made prints of the painting which were
given as gifts to all TOUR Championship volunteers.
Penley earned the Georgia Author of the Year Award for a book of his work, Penley.
He was selected as the official artist of the G-8 Summit on Georgia’s Sea Island where
he met and painted portraits of the world’s most powerful leaders, including President
George W. Bush. However, he is quick to credit
his wife, Carrie. The two of them clearly have
a relationship that keeps Penley organized and
has allowed them to raise their young children.
Although not an artist, Carrie seems to encourage
her husband’s creative ability and vision while
keeping track of the business side of things.
Penley’s work is included in major collections
throughout the United States. He has an exhibit
at the Matre Gallery in Atlanta.

2008 Volunteer Application Timeline
We will begin the application process for the 2008 tournament in January, 2008. The process is as follows:
General
Chairman
Rob
Johnston (l) and First ViceChairman Danny Yates (r),
both volunteers, study plans
while visiting the Media
Center. These leaders took
the time whenever possible
to thank volunteers for their
valuable service.
In mid January, applications will be
sent via email and U.S. Mail to all
volunteers from the 2007 TOUR
Championship. Volunteers with
an email address in the database
will receive both.
Priority for assignments will
be given to those volunteers
who worked THE TOUR
Championship in 2007, provided
their application is received by
March 1, 2008. After March 1,
committee chairmen may fill
openings on their committee with
new recruits until April 1, 2008.
As of April 1, all remaining
positions will be open to anyone
and will be filled on a first come,
first served basis. Applications will
be sent to all new volunteers who
filled out the Volunteer Application

paid application. We cannot hold
spots with just a name.
In 2007, we received 1,000
applications by the first cut off,
so please make sure to get your

like to volunteer.
Guess Who Came Back?

Eva Johansson (r), with Chuck Armstrong (l), Chairman
of the Scoring Committee
E
va Johansson, a young Swedish
school teacher who served as a
scoreboard volunteer at the AT&T
Classic this past spring, returned to the
United States to serve as a volunteer
for THE TOUR Championship. Eva
served throughout the week before
departing on Sunday to teach in
Sweden on Monday.
Eva, who is also a nurse, worked in
a hospital during her summer break
(from teaching) to get the money to
volunteer with all of us! Despite the
challenges she has overcome, Eva
says the hardest part of the whole
journey was making the transition
from riding a bike to work every day
to driving at high speeds on Atlanta’s
downtown connector.
Ms. Johansson obviously has a passion
for golf and says that eventually, she
wants to be known as “an old and
gray lady who gave her all to golf.”

Mr. Royal, the 2006 Tom Cousins Leadership Award recipient, is

families, dignitaries, and officials all manage to be in
the right place at East Lake Golf Club on a daily basis. Mark
Wellden, the winner of the 2006 Billy Payne Volunteer of the
Year Award, takes it in stride. Mark states, “It was a total surprise
and a great honor to just meet Mr. Payne, but our Transportation
Committee volunteers are the real story. We work 8-10 hours
every day to make sure that we deliver people to their intended
destinations.”
Danny has served as Media Center Chairman of THE TOUR
Championship since 1998. He is an accomplished Technology
and Telecommunications Network executive who selflessly
continues to share his talents as a volunteer (he won an
Emmy to prove it). When Mr. Royal is not giving back to his
community, he is golfing, doting on his rapidly-expanding flock
of grandchildren, or rooting for his beloved Auburn Tigers. Most
importantly, Danny treats everyone with respect and courtesy.
The international media representatives can always count on
having their needs met when Danny is on duty.
Former General Chairman Billy Payne is quick to emphasize that
Mark is a volunteer who is truly deserving of this award and that
he is proud of everyone who helps to infuse the volunteer spirit
into the East Lake community through the East Lake initiative.
Mr. Payne is proud to know that volunteers like Mark are helping
to build this community through golf. Golf with a purpose is very
special to Billy Payne and the East Lake Foundation supporters.
