Crawford Canyon Road Santa Ana, CA 92705 Thursday, June 4, 2015 - 6:30pm Mr. Richie Sebastian, Director of Instrumental Music www.lqaztecmusic.com 2014 - 2015 Year Recap Another great year at La Quinta is coming to an end, and it was a year that has left a great mark in my life. With an amazing marching band season in the 5A division (first time), earning a superior rating and performing at SCSBOA regionals with the Advanced Orchestra, being back-to-back SCJA percussion champions (2014 and 2015), having the largest and most talented String Orchestra ever, offering AP Music Theory for the first time, and being SCJA and WGASC Guard Champions (fall and winter seasons), it was definitely another successful year! This department has taken to the skies in the last three years I have been here, and I will gamble and bet that next year will be another cosmic one. It was always my dream to do what I love while working with a great group of people. I am glad my dreams have come true. I am extremely thankful for the La Quinta students, parents, alumni and staff that help make my job easier and for the constant support. I could not imagine my life without all of you in it! Richie Sebastian, Director of Instrumental Music The La Quinta High School Music Department would like to thank the following for their support for the 2014 - 2015 school year. Jennifer Vu First off, I am thankful for Mr. Sebastian for being a great teacher. I'm thankful for the days when Mr. Sebastian lets the class have a day off in orchestra after a concert. I'm thankful for Mr. Sebastian's chillness (e.g. when he lets us do homework during class). I'm grateful for my stand partner, Wendee, for always remembering to bring the music everyday to class and to concerts. I'm grateful for all of my friends in orchestra. They make my time in orchestra fun and enjoyable. Lastly, I am thankful that I took this class because taking this class has made me love music even more. The La Quinta Marching Aztecs, especially, have influenced me to become the person that I am today. To the seniors that I have the honor of graduating with, thank you for always providing me with great company and precious memories. To the juniors and the rest of the underclassmen, make the most out of your experience in this amazing group. Treat everyone especially kindly and have fun while you still can! Lastly, thank you to Mr. Sebastian and the awesome staff for being great mentors and also being everyone's friend. Band is a family that I will never forget. Without my experience in band, my high school journey would have surely been very bland. Shoutout to the one and oy Buunghi Ly who has been with me every step of the way for the past four years. You've stuck me through thick and thin, and I love you!!!! (Bong wrote that) Jessica Vo Throughout my 4 years in band, I’ve somehow ended up switching from low brass, to winter guard, and finally drumline. But no matter where I went, I was able to make lots of lasting relationships, and I’m glad I got to be a part of all 3 groups. I know I don’t mean much to the band, but you all mean a lot to me, and I can’t wait to see how far this ensemble goes. Some advice I’d give is: don’t be afraid to try new things! If I hadn’t yolo’d it and tried out for guard/drumline, my band journey wouldn’t have been as memorable. I promise it’ll pay off. #pray4jae2015 #pray4linh8ever Jonathan Vochung Were you expecting an awesome blurb from me? Well… I don’t have one. But the guy after me, his blurb is alright. Vicki Tran To my friends: We’re graduating soon… Let's become Kpop stars! Haha just kidding! Thank you, friends, teachers, and admin for my time at La Quinta. Lastly, thank you, mommy and daddy for everything! Annie Trinh Aaron Truong Some might say I have the easy job of just standing there and waving my hands. But girlfriend, it’s not that easy. Let me tell you how it works. It took me four years to accomplish this, but the amount of calories and weight that I lost was totally worth it. I totally look in shape at the end of this season. Whenever there’s a tear, just beware, it’s probably someone else somewhere. Just so you know, when the band shines and glows, it is probably because of my hands. For the people who constantly tell me that I only have one job, well so do you. Try becoming a Drum Major one day, let’s see how long you will last. After graduating, I think I’m going to major in drums, because “that’s what people say uhmmmm.” La Quinta High School Marching Band Presents their 2014 Fall Production THE MACHINE Director Richie Sebastian Design Staff Music and Percussion: Ian Grom and John Mapes (Box Six) Color Guard: Julie Lopez Visual: Julie Lopez and Richie Sebastian Instructional Staff Percussion: Connor Yasuda, Chris Luther, Allan Tan, Steven Phung, Taylor Brown, Tim Laguna, Ezekiel Lanser Color Guard: Julie Lopez, Vanessa Lopez, Michael Arellano, Rocio Velasco, Yvonne Nguyen, Katherine Hoang Woodwinds: Mark Alpizar Brass: Ruben Puebla Visual: Richie Sebastian Section Leaders Flute: Sophia Nguyen Mellophone: Salvador Sesmas Clarinet: Daniel Nguyen Trombone: Joseph Lopez Alto Saxophone: Sarah Baritone: Christopher Hein Medina Tuba: Jimmy Nguyen Tenor Saxophone: Christopher Snare Drum: Jetinny Ngo Tathanhlong Tenor Drum: Jessica Vo Bari Saxophone: Joseph Bass Drum: Linh Ong Cherney Rhythm Section: Timothy Trumpet: Sabrina Rosales Nguyen Officers President: Sabrina Rosales Publicity: Linh Ong Vice-President: Sophia Uniform Managers: Nguyen Christopher Hien and Kayla Secretary: Vanessa Tran Cortez; Nancy Vo (asst.) Maybe I’d have better grades, but the 3,000+ hours I’ve put into the music program, cliche as it sounds, really did shape how I spent my high school years and who I am today. I’d like to give a shout out to pit, because without pit, I’d have to march in the field and suffer in the sun. Shout out to Kenny Nguyen for sharing my love for the word “merp.” I still wish we made it to Grand Champs. Cindy Thai James Tran Even though I’ve been in band for four years, I still marched out of step, rushed my runs, and missed my dots. These imperfections are what made band fun. Kenny’s fail high C’s, Steven’s tip backwards over boxes, and our salty summons. Either way, we all did it together and had an amazing season. But most of all I've met you guys, an amazing bunch who had affected my high school experience in the best way possible. I love you all. Peace out, girl scout. Kitty Phan Lisa Nguyen Hi! My name is Lisa Nguyen and I have been a part of Orchestra for four years. Thank you everyone for all these amazing memories. To the new faces and to the old, to Mr. S for being an amazing conductor, to all the great people I’ve known and met, my time here would not have been the same without you all. I used to be pretty normal before I started marching band. I first started marching band in the 7th grade, and then I got pulled into it. I haven’t been the same since. I’ve met a lot of strange people since I started, many of which have become my close friends. I can’t remember how I used to be since band. All I know now is that I’m addicted and I love it. I couldn’t have asked for a better high school experience. Kendrick Nguyen Band has been my most dedicated aspect of all my 4 years in high school. Yes, even more than Brave Frontier, and I love Brave Frontier. I was happier when we got 4th place at Championships than when I pulled my first Anima Kuda. I screamed louder at pep rallies and games than when I defeated Grahdens. I have put more money into band than into the evil corporation of Gumi. Also shout outs to family, friends, and the trumpet section for all of their support. Kenny Nguyen My experience in marching band has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Many people have made it amazing: seniors, Michael Tran, not Joseph, and many others; however, my section has been the one thing to keep my experience truly amazing for all four years. Thanks clarinets. Antony Nguyen Johnson Bui For 4 years I was stranded on an island with only one goal - survive. Now I will fulfill my father’s dying wish - to use the list of names he left me and bring down those who are poisoning my city. To do this, I must become someone else. I must become something else. Daniel Nguyen I've learned how to smile during my time in band. Add me on snapchat @danngu Duyen Nguyen Before I move on to college, I want to thank my friends, partners, and coaches for being a big part of my high school journey. One of my bucket list items was to continue my drumline career for one more year after high school by joining Pulse Percussion. However, this choice was out of the question when I've decided to go to University Of the Pacific, which is 6 hours away from most of the groups that I wanted to join. I am hoping that there are some groups up north, if not another ideal goal was to join a drum corps during the summer. There goes my summer break haha. I have decided to go to UOP to do their 4+2 dentist accelerated program. This means you guys would see me doing surgery on your teeth in six years haha. In addition, if it works out I plan to minor in music while I'm there. Not exactly sure what I would do, but I want to have something to go to when I need a break from all the craziness happening in life. Just a little something for me to relieve my stress and enjoy what I love doing at the same time! Although I did take a lot of risks and broke out of my shell throughout high school, thinking about it now, there are still so many more things that I should have done but ended up not doing it because I was too afraid of the outcomes that might have come with it. But what I've learned was that there will be a few times in life when all of your instincts will tell you to do something, something that defies logic, upsets your plans, and may seem crazy to others. But if that happens, listen to the little man or woman inside of you because the are never wrong. Ignore everything else. Just go against the norm. Who knows, maybe the outcome will be in your favor. Be adventurous. Don't be like the rest of them darling. Dominica Cao In loving memory, Dominica Cao, an altruistic backwards Australian, died on November 23, 2014 of oppositional defiant disorder after being shoved inside a tuba case on account of playing F major instead of Ab major during auditions. She regrets nothing. Mr. Sebastian does not have perfect pitch. She is survived by her chattel Timothy Nguyen, and her front ensemble peons, whom she hopes will mourn her appropriately. She is preceded in death by almost every person who ever lived on the planet, including Gandhi, Walt Disney, and Benito Mussolini. She will greatly miss photoshopping marching band pictures, because she knows that cover downs are rarely achieved and that the final related images are censored constructions of one girl’s yearnings for parallel lines. Mourners and celebrants of Dominica’s passing can attend a memorial service at the the OC Mining Company at 6:30pm June 4, 2015. Fernando Cervantes Megan Chang Buunghi Ly Of my four years in high school, I can definitely say that band has been an integral part in shaping who I am today. I’ve found all of my best friends within band and had the opportunity to learn and grow with them. Although I’d probably have better grades and more sleeps if I hadn’t been in band, all of my experiences have been worthwhile. Ty pce out ily pitties <3 The best decision I've ever made in high school was joining band. It has taught me so many things about life, nurtured my development as a person, and rewarded me with meaningful relationships. It has made me who I am today. Without band, perhaps I would not be as stressed out, or as exhausted. But then again, without it, I would not have discovered my strengths or my limits. More importantly, I would not have met and befriended the monsters who are my friends and comrades today - Seesaw Cecilia Tsai, Megs Megan Chang, Cow Moo Moo Mychau Ho, Katiebear Katie Ngo, and many others, including my fantastic drumline, and last but not least, my cymbal section - Anthony Tran, Hannah Bui, Millie Nguyen, and Michelle Vu. Thank you bandos for all the memories. Thank you Seabass, Steven Phung, staff, and parents for making it all happen.Thank you band for everything. Even when it gets hard, fight through it and do not give up on band. Kayla Cortez I’ve marched 3 years of alto sax and 1 year of mellophone in marching band. My favorite moment in band would have to be hanging out in the secrets of the uniform room. Marching band has been the best experience of my four years in high school. It definitely has made me the person I am today. Being uniform manager, has showed me that organization is everything. Being in band showed me hard work is the key to success. I’ve learned to always have a plan and not be caught off-guard, to always know what needs to be done next, and to get it done. Marching Band has helped me develop into a great, and ultimately, better teacher. I with the best of luck to the future generations of Marching Aztecs. I’m sure you’ll make everyone proud. I will miss you all, lots of love Aztecs. Steven Dao Band has been such a great experience to be a part of. Music has always been an imperative factor of my life, and being able to dedicate a huge portion of my high school career to music will remain a lifelong memory. Thank you to my fellow bandos, the parents of the FOM department, and most importantly Mr. Sebastian for helping to contribute to my wonderful last year at La Quinta! Jetinny Ngo Started on bass drum and now I’m here. Marching band drum captain of this year. Band is love, band is life. Katie Ngo Khiet Le Cecilia Doan Phillip Le Wendee Duong Thank you for the amazing four years! Bye! Joseph Lopez Dominic Garcia I’ve been a part of Marching Band for two months. I was normal before I joined band. The first time I tried band I got addicted. Band in my opinion would be improved with more pep music as well as more food. Finally, bring back the Jazz. RIP 2011-2013. Jae Henricksen Lisa Huynh Chris Hien Angie Lai So now we fly ever free. We’re free before the thunderstorm. On towards the wilderness our quest carries on. Far beyond the sundown, far beyond the moonlight. Deep inside our hearts and all our souls. So far away we wait for the day. For the lives all so wasted and gone. We feel the pain of a lifetime lost in a thousand days. Through the fire and flames we carry on. Mychau Ho I just wanted to say that being involved with the music department was the best decision I have made coming into high school. I started off by joining third period orchestra, in which my first experience didn't excite me. However, I never really wanted to quit. Watching my two older sisters and their performances, that made me excited, so I decided to learn to play the alto sax in order to be in band. For the passed three years, being in both marching band and orchestra were something that I always enjoyed being a part of! It was something that I loved doing. Now that I will be graduating, it makes me sad to leave all this behind. To all those who are still questioning whether to stay in this department or not, I would like to say that it really is your choice, but if you're thinking that it is something you want to be a part of and it is something you enjoy doing, go for it. Don't let anything get in the way, just go! Playing music is one thing, but it's the bond you form with these people around you that gives you that warm feeling inside. Whether it is the music department or something else, just go for it because you'll just end up feeling regretful in the end. Push yourself to that commitment because being a part of something you love is always worth the time and effort! As I close my little (or big) paragraph here, I would like to thank the parents and staff for putting their time for kids like us, providing us with snacks, water, helping with fundraisers, building props for the shows, and making us better performers and musicians, I would like to thank my fellow band and orchestra members for making my high school experience something really special, thanks you class of 2015 for being such an awesome class (lol) and a special thanks to Mr. Sebastian, because you put dedication and time for not just us, but for other groups too. Thank you for trying to do the best that you can for us, and being able to cope with us each and everyday. Thank you for all your hard work, and seriously, get lots of rest. Thanks to everyone for being a contributing factor in making this life of mine the best it can be. I really appreciate people like all of you! Justin Le Marching Band is pretty good.
