Entertainment District
Check out the latest things to do, places to eat and music
to listen to in some of Austin’s most vibrant neighborhoods:
Downtown
As hoppin’ during the week as it is on the weekends, this bustling area of
commerce, cuisine, cocktails and the Capitol is a melting pot of finance and fun, as well as
philanthropic conservation. In addition to opportunities for retail therapy, the arts scene is
alive and well with galleries and museums at nearly every corner.
2ND Street
Officially spanning the length of 2nd Street between Congress Avenue and San Antonio
streets, this area is home to local and national brands, ranging from beauty, body and
abode, to restaurants and overnight respites. Don your favorite reusable tote and wear
shoes meant for strolling.
Warehouse District
As the name suggests, many of this neighborhood's bars and restaurants are housed in
renovated, antique warehouses. The gritty backdrop makes for a vibrant scene that
draws a diverse crowd thanks to its range of live entertainment, restaurants, LGBT scene
and unique shops..
East Austin
Arguably the fastest growing neighborhood in Austin, the eclectic eastside is where old meets
new and fresh eateries and boutiques are popping up like wildflowers. Dig a little deeper and
discover rich history and culture everywhere you look.
Rainey Street
Renovated houses turned into bungalow bars reign supreme on this increasingly popular
tucked-away street. Day or night, you’ll find relaxed bar-goers strolling from bar to food
trailer to bar again, often with their dogs in tow looking for a kicked back sip and a bite.
Red River
Do you hear that? That’s the sound of live music coming from some of the hottest stages
in Austin, all spanning a three-block radius. Nightclub heavy, droves of concert-seekers mill
the streets, dipping into watering holes for Lone Star beers while waiting for the lights to
dim and shows to begin.
Sixth Street
Sixth Street is distinctly Austin. With its colorful and bustling array of bars, restaurants
and entertainment venues, it’s a sure bet for experiencing local characters and the
vibrancy of the city.
South Congress
This vibrant neighborhood south of Lady Bird Lake is a must-stroll for visitors and a
popular hangout for locals. South Congress oozes homespun character and boasts the
story of Austin’s yesteryear in its boutiques and eateries.
Live music is in our roots
Contributed by John Morthland
First-time visitors might be surprised to find themselves being entertained with live music as they
walk through the terminal at Austin's airport after deplaning. But they shouldn't be. Live music, and
music in many other forms, is everywhere in Austin. Musicians play in everything from grocery stores
(Central Market, Whole Foods) to city council meetings. They play outdoors at the Blues on the Green
series and at festivals: Austin City Limits and South by Southwest you've likely heard of, but there's
also Pachanga Latino Musical Festival, Urban Music Festival, Fun, Fun, Fun Fest, Chaos in Tejas and
many more worth checking out. Mostly, you'll find Austin musicians at clubs, coffeehouses, bars,
taquerias, auditoriums and concert halls - and with more than 250 live music venues.
Iconic Austin
For quintessential live music experiences, swing by the Continental Club, where retro and roots music rule.
Any true fan should stop and pay homage to an Austin music legend by taking a picture next to the
bronze Stevie Ray Vaughan statue at Auditorium Shores Austin's celebrated live music scene inevitably
continues to change, and likewise stays the same. As venues come and go, two key factors somehow
remain stable; an astonishing 250 or so places present live music here, and every style is represented.
The scene keeps adapting. The Broken Spoke and Continental Club are widely considered the town's
top venues. The Spoke, a classic country dancehall getting hemmed in by residential development,
still books mostly-local acts (Alvin Crow, Cornell Hurd Band, Jesse Dayton) who can keep the dazzling
boot-scooters circling the floor. The Continental Club still favors rootsy American music from both
touring and local acts; among the latter, look for twangy country from Redd Volkaert, blues from the
Blues Specialists, or rock from singer-songwriters like James McMurtry as well as bands like White
Ghost Shivers. But music lovers know that the sounds are more intimate in the tiny, upstairs
Continental Gallery.
Rooms like the eclectic Saxon Pub hold their own. The Saxon offers mostly regional acts, including
favorite son rocker Bob Schneider with his various bands. Plus, of course, the Resentments, the
informal Americana group born there via Sunday jams and still going strong, albeit with completely
different personnel, more than a decade later. Other old standbys-acoustic listening room Cactus
Café, world music stronghold Flamingo Cantina, jazz club the Elephant Room, country hole-in-thewall Ginny's Little Longhorn and Asleep at the Wheel leader Ray Benson's spacious Rattle Inn and Red
River Street rock bastions like the cutting-edge Mohawk-also thrive.
But so do the still-young and mostly-free East Side clubs just across IH-35
from the traditional downtown Sixth Street entertainment stretch. The biggest
buzz is for the White Horse, another dance-happy honky tonk featuring country
and Tex-Mex conjunto. Hotel Vegas and GypsyLounge, where the rockin' gets hard
and heavy, are both nearby. Still, the downtown Austin City Limits Live
at the Moody Theater, a luxurious, mid-sized venue with state-of-theart sound and lighting and nary a bad seat, is the town's crown jewel.
Yes, the award-winning TV show is recorded there, but otherwise
the Moody hosts public concerts by local and touring acts in every genre
imaginable.

bicycles, and more, built into a Cathedral of Junk.
That’s what Vince Hannemann has created here — an
attraction that’s been featured in The New York
Times, and one that your children will be talking
about forever. If you’re looking for an unusual
adventure, take a trip to Alreina Drive.

Austin Ghost Tour
603 East 3rd St. Austin, TX 78701 - 512.853.9826
See the City of Austin in a whole new light — a
spooky one — with a downtown walking tour that
covers the scariest corners of town. Learn — if you
dare — of the ghosts of Governor’s Mansion, the spirits that haunt the warehouse district, and the
strange tale of one of America’s first serial killer, the
Servant Girl Annihilator. Not for the squeamish, but for
children (or parents) with a taste for the macabre,
this is Austin at its ghoulish best.
Austin Segway Tour
621 East 6th St. Austin, TX 78701 - 512.402.9299
Imagine taking a tour of Austin where you get to rent
and ride a Segway of your own for an entire two-tothree-hour tour. You’ll see everything from Sixth
Street and the Bremmond Block to the Governor’s Mansion, and the Capitol, all from your very own Segway. It

Austin for you and for your children.

Sat. and Sun., year-round, every generation can join
in on a trip through Hill Country in a three-hour ride
aboard the Bertram Flyer. You’ll see everything from
rolling pastures to rocky tundra, and you’ll get a
chance to explore the Bertram Train Depot, built in
1912, now fully restored to its old glory. Note: If the
Flyer itself, an original steam engine, is in the
process of restoration, you may be hauled around by
an equally cool 1960 Diesel locomotive, but the trip is
fun for everyone, either way.
Austin Zoo
10807 Rawhide Trail Austin, TX 78736 512.288.1490
Three hundred animals, 100 different species. All of

a fine facility for wildlife.

who grow up in the city rarely get a sense of where
their food is coming from and what goes into putting
it on their table. Here’s a chance to give them a glimpse
of the rural world: Boggy Creek Farm. What began as a
single family’s journey “back to the farm” has
become a great destination. Set aside a Wednesday
or Saturday, from 9am to 1pm, and visit the Boggy
Creek Market that takes place under massive oak
trees. You’ll get a chance to see a small farm at work,
buy the yield straight from the field, and watch the
harvest in progress.

512.495.1963. Butler Park, formerly known as Town

walk through, dance in, and play with. It’s a special
attraction in an already excellent park, and a fun
place to spend an afternoon.
305 South Congress Ave. Austin, TX 78704. What
can you say about the world’s largest urban bat
colony? It’s amazing, awe-inspiring, a little scary, and
right here in Austin. The fact is, there are more than
1.5 million bats living under the Congress Avenue
Bridge. You can see their nightly quest for food and
family from the street, from the water, or from the
Austin American-Statesman’s Bat Observation Center.
A visit to the website will give you a great deal of
information and even updated ‘emergence’ times.
Deep Eddy Pool
401 Deep Eddy Dr. Austin, TX 78703 - 512.472.8546. Way
back when, Deep Eddy Pool was just a swimming
hole along the Colorado River. In the 1920s, it became
a public pool and bathhouse and it remains the

Natural Bridge Caverns
26495 Natural Bridge Caverns Rd. Natural Bridge
Caverns, TX 78266. The Natural Bridge Caverns are the
largest known commercial caverns in the U.S. state
of Texas. The name was derived from the 60 ft natural
limestone slab bridge that spans the amphitheater
setting of the cavern's entrance. The span was left
suspended when a sinkhole collapsed below it. The
caverns are located near the city of San Antonio, Texas
in the Texas Hill Country next to the Natural Bridge
Wildlife Ranch, a drive-through wildlife safari park.
The caverns feature several unique speleothems and
other geological formations. . The deepest part of the
public tour is 180 feet below the surface, although undeveloped areas of the cavern reach
depths of 230 feet. The caverns are still very active
and considered living. Due to the porosity of the
limestone, rainwater travels downwards through
the layers of rock, where it dissolves out calcite, a
weak mineral that makes up all of the speleothems
at Natural Bridge Caverns.

smaller studio theater for community-arts groups, and

in town, and a wonderful place to see all by itself.

Locals might be proud of the "Everything is Bigger in
Texas" slogan, but Austin, consistently ranked as one
of the Top 10 Fittest Cities in the US, is proud to keep
slim. The 10-mile Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike
Trail, commonly known as The Trail, creates a full
circuit around the serene inner-city shores of Lady
Bird Lake and is Austin's most popular recreational
attraction, with more than 1.5 million annual visitors.
Both long-term residents and downtown tourists
enjoy the proximity and beautiful scenery of the
lakeside paths, whether they're training for a
mountain bike race at 5am, walking their dog at
lunchtime or jogging.
Join a social ride
Austin is incredibly cycling-savvy, but you don't have
to be a fan of hipster fixed gears to get in on the
action. Local organisation Social Cycling Austin
("putting butts on bikes since 2009") presents a diverse
series of free, weekly social rides for any type of rider,
from Heavy Metal Fitness rides to Saturday Caffeine
Cruises and Hump Day Nooners on Wednesdays. Its
most popular ride, the Thursday Night Social Ride,
attracts around 500 cyclists, who hobnob on-the-go
to locations including swimming holes and patio bars.
Lakes & Boating
Boat Lake Austin and marvel at the multimillion dollar
homes, ski on some smooth water, and hit some good
restaurants (stop at Ski Shores for burgers and music
on the deck or Abels or Hula Hut for appetizers,
drinks, or dinner) or enjoy any of the nearby Highland
LakesLake Austin & 360 Bridge - watch the sun set at
the Oasis which overlooks Lake Travis, rent a boat,
waverunner, or party barge on any of the Highland
Lakes, join the fun at Devils Cove on Lake Travis, or
boat up to a restaruant on Lake Travis.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Austinites will do just about anything to enjoy
downtown's Lady Bird Lake, and the latest exercise
phenomenon to hit the city is stand-up paddleboarding. It may seem odd at first, but the casual
watersport is a pleasantly easy way to admire the
skyline from the lake, and getting a surprisingly
active core workout at the same time. Austin Paddle
Sports, Texas Rowing Centers and SUP ATX all offer
lessons for beginners and independent hourly rentals
via their lakeside docks.
University of Texas
Ranked among the biggest and best research universities in the country, UT Austin is home to more than
51,000 students and 3,000 teaching faculty. Spirit and
pride run deep at The University of Texas at Austin,
and never is that more evident than on Longhorn
game day. And while our unique history of traditions
and legacy of athletics achievements give Longhorns
much to be proud of, the impact of Texas Athletics
extends far beyond the playing field. As one of the
few self-sustaining athletics programs in the nation,
Texas Athletics enhances the mission of the university
by contributing financially to student and faculty programs and academic initiatives. Today, more than 500
student athletes compete in 20 sports programs where
they are instilled with the passion, knowledge and
character it takes to compete to win, to succeed
academically, to achieve dreams and to contribute
to society.

Best Swimming
Holes In Texas
http://yestotexas.com/10-best-swimming-holes-in-texas/
Barton Springs – Austin, TX
You can’t do a Texas swimming holes list without Barton
Springs. The “frigid” spring-fed waters of Barton Springs are
said to be healing waters. The biggest ailment I know it
cures is heat exhaustion, but boredom is another disease
this pool takes care of quickly.
It’s $3 to enter for the day. Parking can be an issue if you’re
trying to park on the North side of the pool, so if you’re driving down, try parking on the south side for the best luck on
that end. Bring your blanket or towel so you can post up on
the hill, but leave your food, frisbees, footballs, and alcohol
at home.
Deep Eddy Pool
The huge shallow end, cool water, and massive cottonwood
trees make this place a family favorite. Lap swimmers have
their own pool, so the kids can frolic to their heart's content
without getting in the way of the serious swimmers. From
May 24 to August 10, adult lap swimming will be available
from 8am to 10am. Recreational swimming and lap swimming available from 10am to 9pm. Admission: $2 for adults,
75 cents for ages 12 to 17 & 50 cents for 11 and under. Call
(512) 472-8546. Located west of Mopac, north of the river
at 401 Deep Eddy Dr.
Devil’s Waterhole – West of Burnet, TX
Nowadays, droughts are a big factor in whether or not you’ll
enjoy watering holes in a particular area. Devil’s Waterhole
in Inks Lake State Park thankfully isn’t affected by drought
conditions. The cliffs are fun to jump off of for those of yall
who aren’t afraid of heights.
Aside from the swimming hole, there’s plenty to do in the
park for all yall that like fishing, hiking, and camping.
Hamilton Pool – Dripping Springs, TX
Blue Hole in Georgetown
Blue Hole in Georgetown. Located on the San Gabriel River,
this spot is underdeveloped, but worth the effort. A small
dam near the Austin Avenue bridge keeps water in this
stretch of the river year-round and there's a grassy area on
the riverbank that's good for picnics. From the Williamson
County Courthouse in Georgetown, go north on U.S. 81,
(Austin Avenue), turn left on 2nd Street then right on Rock
Street to the river. Admission is free.
At first glance, Hamilton Pool looks like it belongs on another
planet. We’re always saying Texas is like nowhere else, and
this is exactly why. Hamilton Creek spills over the top creating a 50-foot waterfall in to the shaded pool below. Bring a
towel to grab some sun on the shore, or some goggles to
swim. Either way, don’t leave your sun-block at home. Sunburns are no fun.
On occasion, the pool is closed due to weather or trail conditions, so it’s always smart to call ahead at (512) 264-2740
to verify that they’ll be open that day.
Blue Hole in Wimberley
Located on Cypress Creek one quarter mile east of the town
square, this privately owned campground/swimming area
attracts people from all over Central Texas. Rope swings
hang from the huge cypress trees that line the spring-fed
creek. Admission for a group of up to five costs $50 for a
seasonal membership plus $1 per head; for more than five
people, admission is $3 per person plus the seasonal membership. Day use hours are 9am to 7pm. No pets are allowed
for day use. No minors without parents. No glass. Camping
is available with fees starting at $15 p/night, plus a weekly
membership for an additional $15. Very kid friendly. Call
(512) 847-9127.
City Tube Chute – New Braunfels, TX
Many a cooler of beer has been lost to the City Tube Chute
in New Braunfels. Made out of concrete and stone, this
dam/chute has also been the location of years and years of
cool enjoyment. Whether you’re just floatin’ through on your
way down the Comal or you’re sticking around all day to
watch all the drunks float by, it’s one of the top spots to cool
down in Texas.
Due to the fact that some folks have been messin’ with
Texas, there are some new rules in place for what you can
and can’t take on the Comal river. Be sure to check out the
updated rules before you head on down.
The opening of the well is about 12 feet wide, and it descends 35 feet, before descending another 120 feet at an
angle in to caves. Diving in to the underwater caves isn’t
recommended though, even for experience SCUBA folks, so
if you do go, stick to swimming and enjoying the pool this
spring has created.
Krause Springs – Spicewood, TX
The previous three swimming holes have been on public
land, but Krause Springs is owned by the Krause family, and
has been for about 50 years. It’s open year round and is fed
by, you guessed it, springs. There is a lot to do aside from
just swim such as butterfly gardens and plenty of beautiful
Texas landscape to explore.
As far as amenities go, there is both primitive camping and
RV hookups. There is a cheap per person charge to enter
the park, as well as to camp.
San Marcos River
Tube it, snorkel it, or swim it. This spot is worth the 30minute drive from Austin. Fed by San Marcos Springs, there
are several spots that are fun to explore along this river. The
falls just below Peppers Restaurant have long been a favorite
of the locals. Wear a lifejacket, swim mask, and snorkel and
float down the river a mile or two. The river is full of wildlife,
including rare plants, turtles, and fish. However, the river has
many cans and glass bottles in it, so be sure to protect your
feet.
Sculpture Falls on Barton Creek
Hippie Hollow
In addition to being one of the best places on earth to see
the rare blackcapped vireo, a federally protected songbird,
Hippie Hollow is one of the few public swimming spots in
Texas where clothing is optional. Located on Lake Travis, the
swimming here isn't as good as some of the other parks on
Lake Travis, but it's still an interesting stop. No one under
18 admitted. Admission: $5 per vehicle. Open from 8am to
9pm. No camping, cooking, glass or pets. From FM 620, go
west 1.5 miles on Comanche Trail just past the Oasis
Restaurant, at 7000 Comanche Trail. Call Travis County Parks
Department, (512) 473-9437.
Jacob’s Well – Wimberley, TX
This spring-fed swimming hole in northwest Wimberley,
Texas still flies under the radar after all these years. On any
given summer day, you won’t find more than 20-30 people
down here, which is a great thing. Nestled in a thick area of
trees and shrubs, there’s plenty of shade from the hot Texas
sun if you just want to watch folks who decide to take a big
jump in to the well.
When the creek is flowing, this is an urban oasis. You'll
quickly forget you're in the middle of town, as the waterfall
drowns out the noise of the city. Located about 1.3 miles
upstream of the Mopac bridge, the only way to get to Sculpture is by walking or cycling, which keeps the amateurs at
bay. Curfew on city trails is from 10pm to 7am.
