Integrity: I can do the right thing when others are watching
AND when no one is watching.
Courage: I can step outside of my comfort zone and try
something new.
Scut Farcus, Leg Lamps, and Shooting Your Eye Out
If we were playing a word association game and you had an affinity
towards holiday movies and Red Ryder bb guns, then you would know
I’m talking about The Christmas Story. I’ll be honest (we are celebrating
Integrity after all), we here at Grass Valley Charter School have no
preferential commitment to one holiday story over another…unless, of
course, one of our very own is the lead role! Max Maliszewski is
playing Ralphie in The Christmas Story at the Nevada Theatre (flyer
attached). If you’d like to check Max out come see the play! Since his
newfound fame he promises me he’s still just the “same old Max.” It’s
just that now he travels with an entourage and has a hospitality rider
that must be filled before any public appearances.
Smoothies for Science!
Do you love Jamba Juice? Do you love free Jamba Juice? Do you want
to send the 6th grade class away for a week! Well have we got a deal
for you! Buy a Jamba Juice – get one for free! You can purchase a card
that has 6 BOGO deals on it. Yeah, you read that correctly, buy one, get
one – six times in a row. All proceeds go to help 6th grade go to science
camp. And that’s not all! If you but two cards now, then you’ll be able
to buy 12 Jamba Juice at the regular price and get 12 for free! How
amazing is that! (We realize that really there’s no added value for buying two cards but it helps out
th
the 6 grade even that much more. For instance you could buy 8 cards and get 48 Jamba Juice for free
which sounds amazing but ratio wise it’s still pretty much the same deal but I promise no one will judge you
for partaking in so much smoothie goodness)
Wreath Auction
Saturday, December 5th (that’s today folks) the Sierra Academy of
Expeditionary Learning (SAEL) is having a wreath auction. There will
be food, live music, and amazing wreaths to purchase. You’ll have an
opportunity to learn more about SAEL and get to hear SAEL students
discuss their expeditions. The event will be held at our very own MPR.
Come by and check it out! There’s a flyer attached with more
information.

Project Impact Free Tutoring
Free high school tutoring is available for all students in grades 4-8
every Thursday in room 22. Please email Saskia if you want to sign up
your child for Thursday's tutoring session (email: [email protected]).
She needs to know how many students are attending each week
before Wednesday at 6 pm so that she can invite the right number of
high school helpers. We have awesome high school student tutors this
year! This is a great program that we offer here and we want to see
students benefit from it.
8th Grade Tutoring Service Project
Two of our dynamic 8th graders, Sammy Maliszewski and Rive
Fredericks, are tutoring as part of their 8th grade service project.
Sammy and Rive will help students in math (6th grade and below) after
school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:30 in portable 30. If
you’re interested, you can contact me and I’ll connect you to Sammy and
Rive. 8th graders volunteering their time after school to support our
students is just another example of the stellar CREW we have at GVCS!
Bills, Gills, and Mud for the 4th Grade
In the midst of the rainstorm on Thursday the 4th
grade class took a trip to the
UC Davis Raptor Center and to
the Yolo Basin Wildlife Area.
The Raptor Center seeks to
educate people of all ages to
raptors and their habitats and
to encourage appreciation,
respect, and protection of these magnificent birds. After talking to a
few rain soaked ten-year old Charter students it was apparent that the
downpour didn’t dampen their spirit of adventure! Poncho draped,
journal-carrying, ornithologists spotted several different varieties of
birds – and loved every moment of it! In the
spirit of ‘nature is our
teacher’ students used
scopes and their “eagle
eyes” to spot waterfowl,
shorebirds, raptors, and
migratory birds at the Yolo
Basin Wildlife Area. In
addition to the outdoor
classroom, experts from the Audubon Society
went along to help cement the findings to the 4th
grades’ Bills & Gills expedition. Want to know
more about this amazing day in the rain? Ask a
4th grader!
Lost & Found
Cold mornings + sunny afternoons = heaping pile of clothes in lost and
found. You shouldn’t have to be an expert in common core math to
champion that equation. Lost & Found is reaching epic proportions.
The large wooden crate used to house all the discarded sweatshirts,
jackets, you-name-its, is no longer expansive enough and clothes are
spilling over. Please take a moment to reclaim any lost items.
Snow Days
Well it’s that time of year…maybe even that time of week! Snow may
fall from the sky, and when it does, you should know what to do. First,
play in it. It’s amazing! Then, check to see if it has impacted school. If
the holiday wishes of children everywhere have been answered and
school is closed, there should be an all-call from the district telling you.
If there’s no all-call (or you didn’t get one) and you’re still curious, listen
to KNCO 830AM in the morning. That’s the local radio station and they
will cover all school closures. If you can’t remember the station, just
think, “What time does school start?” 8:30 AM, that’s the radio station
too! Also you can go to this link at KNCO for all school closures:
http://knco.com/community/school-closures/.
Chess Club
First rule about Chess Club: Don’t talk about Chess Club. Well, I guess
we can talk about it a little bit. Chess club is Thursday, 3:00 – 4:00 in
Room 30. Chess club is open to students in 2nd grade and above. All skill
levels are welcome.
Good News Club
Good News Club meets every Thursday after-school from 3:00- 4:30 in
Room 32. Get a permission slip in the school office today. If you have
any questions call Chelsea Cummins at (530) 273-8520 or email
[email protected].
Free Piano?
Well we’re not exactly swapshop, but one of our faithful Howl readers
has asked me to help find a good home for their piano. Please inquire if
you’re interested. It's a Baldwin. All the keys work and it sounds good
to the untrained ear. The wood finish needs touchup.
You pick it up. We live in Alta Sierra and
the piano is easily accessible, no stairs involved.
