WHAT IS NEW IN TREK!
The IKS Rotarran was a Klingon
Bird-of-Prey in service during the
2370s. With the withdrawal of
Klingon fleet from Cardassian
space in mid-2373, following the
Cardassian's successful
admittance into the Dominion, the
Rotarran suffered half a dozen
successive defeats in combat with
the Jem'Hadar, mounting heavy
casualties over a period of seven
months.
Late that year, General
Martok was assigned command of
the Rotarran by the Klingon High
Council and dispatched to locate
the missing IKS B'Moth. Joining
him was Worf as his first officer

I believe there is definitely a place for face-to-face
networking. That’s why I was determined to have a
regional summit this year. As you recall, we considered
many options including holding a joint event with a
convention later in 2012. Due to various limitations with
that scenario, it was deemed better to have an
independent event instead. And that’s why we are having
this year’s summit in Las Vegas again.
I want to thank everyone who helped us evaluate the
locations, meetings and so on. I also want to thank USS
Sandstorm for hosting this year’s summit.
This is not to say everything is going to be a repeat of last
year’s event. By popular demand, we have a new hotel
close to the main strip this time. This will give everyone
more time to enjoy more local attractions outside the
summit. The hotel info is as follows:

Looking beyond our region, the STARFLEET International
Conference is slated for August 3-5 in Memphis, Tennessee at the
Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center. I am definitely
looking forward to connect
with many old friends and meeting some new ones. For more

While the IC requires a longer trip from R4, there are actually
quite a few direct flights
to Memphis. I highly encourage everyone to visit IC at least once
in their STARFLEET career. As the regional
coordinator, I will be attending the ECAB meeting on Friday.

On a different note, I want to address an interesting situation in
our region. Unlike most regions, we actually
have an abundance of unassigned members. I’d like to help these

announcements to make in this
edition. First the 200 & 300
level courses to the SFA
Chaplain College have now
been approved and are ready
for any of you who wish to
apply for them thru the SFA
Academy. Deputy Chief
Chaplain (BDR) Bryan Jones has
spent many hours working on
these courses for the Chaplain
Services and I know that I am
looking forward to taking them.
We have also had an increase
of the chaplain membership in

2012 Annular Solar Eclipse in Chico, CA
On Sunday, May 20th an
annular solar eclipse took place
in the western hemisphere and
the path traced a line from
China/Malaysia through the
northern pacific and into
northern California. I was lucky
enough to be there and
experience it. I’m glad I did. It
was certainly an once-in-alifetime event. The next eclipse
in North America will be in

2017 and then not again until
2117!
The week preceding
the event was filled with a lot of
news stories and fact-filled
informational blipverts
reminding people not to look
with the naked eye. Eclipse
glasses were being sold by
many vendors in the city and
the welding suppliers ran out of
#14 welder’s filters.

Instead of investing in
technology, I elected to go “old
school” on imaging the eclipse.
Armed with nothing but a pine
board and a pair of 4x spotting
binoculars I managed to gather
the following photos.
Notice how the shadow of my
binoculars looks like a cartoon
character with different
expressions throughout the
duration of the eclipse.

Greetings Region 4,
Dave Pitts here again. "What, that guy's
back?" Yeah, and I'm now the Region 4
Assistant Surgeon General. First Lt. Sean
Waitman from the USS STORMBRINGER
is my Deputy.
Let's get started. So, on Jan
16th, I went a doctor's appointment and
while it was for nothing outrageous, I did
learn I weighed 241 pounds! Say,
whaaaatttt? I'm 5ft 9in, I should NOT be
that heavy. I'm officially OBESE! Go
Dave! Seriously...WTF?!?!
I had a heart
attack in April of 2008 and I weighed 215
then... OOPS! On that day I decided to
make myself more active and change my
eating habits. I have a 5 day a week desk
job that makes me cubicle bound from
6AM until 2:30 PM. My life is such that I
pretty much have no time afterwards for
the gym, but I do walk at lunch now.
I used to push carts for WalMart as a second job and that kept me
down to 170.
Anyway, we get 30 minutes for
"lunch hour" so I briskly walk around
this facility that is outside the main
building I work in. It's 880 feet long by
about 150 feet wide and we can do a
fast pace lap around the outside in
about 9 minutes or so. Usually, we do
three laps and by we, I mean there are
several of us out there doing the same
thing.
As for eating, I started eating
breakfast now. I used to never eat
breakfast. I haven't in years, to be
honest. I quit drinking coffee and
creamer and switched to plain green tea.
Sodas are gone. If I want a drink, it's
plain water with a lemon or lime twist or
maybe some Sweet Tea flavored Mio
water enhancer. That stuff is good if I
may do some spamming here.
I eat the protein and slow
burning carbs for breakfast so I don't
start the day hungry. I do not swing by a
fast food place and get a sodium filled
breakfast there...not any more...OKAY,
you busted me, happy? ;-)
I've stopped grazing. If I do
snack it's walnuts, or blueberries or
edamame beans, or I drink water.
There's that water again, huh?
Here's a diet I've adopted. It
helps me maintain a negative calorie
balance when I go to bed.
"What the blazes is that, Dave?"
Quite simply, you go to bed having
burned off more calories than you took
in. If there's nothing medically wrong
with you, you will lose weight,
guaranteed. Now, this brings me to my
next statement.
DISCLAIMER TIME: I'm not a doctor or
dietitian so let me say this. BEFORE
ENGAGING IN AN EXERCISE PLAN OR
DIET, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR.
There may be something wrong with you
that a diet or exercise could make worse.
Okay, here we go:
Your diet plan should consist of a small
amount of whole grains and healthy fats,
some low or non-fat dairy, lean protein,
and an abundance of fruits or
vegetables. Make sure to eat every 4
hours to keep your metabolism fueled
and to prevent yourself from overeating
at a given meal. Eating meals regularly
doesn't make you fat. Starving yourself
has a habit of making one binge when
they feel so hungry they have to stuff
themselves to compensate.
BREAKFAST:
As you've heard before, breakfast is the
most important meal of the day and this
is not the time to skimp on calories. Your
breakfast should consist of slow-burning
carbs and protein to keep your energy
levels strong throughout the day and to
keep your appetite under control. You
need to properly feed and fuel your
metabolism when you wake up, and you
can do this by choosing one of the
following breakfast options:
1.Egg white, veggie omelet with a piece
of dry whole wheat toast and half a
banana.
2.A few small, whole wheat pancakes
topped with berries and non-fat yogurt.
3.Whole grain cereal with non-fat milk
and berries and a hard-boiled egg
MID MORNING SNACK:
Your mid-morning snack should keep
your energy levels elevated and hold you
over until lunch. Fruit is a great option
for a mid-morning snack, as the healthy
carbs and natural sugars will continue to
fuel your metabolism. Some other good
choices are non-fat Greek yogurt, low-fat
string cheese or a hard-boiled egg, but
be sure to choose something you didn't
previously consume at breakfast.
LUNCH:
Your lunch on this eating plan should be
light, but not so light that you run the
risk of overeating later in the day. A
great option would be a half a sandwich
and a small bowl of broth-based soup.
The sandwich should include whole
wheat bread and be filled with grilled
veggies or low fat turkey. It should lack
mayo and other fatty condiments. You
can also opt for a mixed green salad
topped with salmon or grilled chicken.
Sometimes, I sprinkle cinnamon or
crushed walnuts on my salad.
MID-AFTERNOON SNACK:
Mini carrots or other raw veggies are
great for a nutritious afternoon snack.
Dip them in a small amount of hummus,
and if this doesn't do the trick, add
about 10 nuts (again, I prefer crushed
walnuts or pecans) to your snack.
DINNER:
Your dinner should be free of
carbohydrates, and consist of a lean
protein (either fish or white meal) and
lots of veggies. Your whole-grain carbs
should be consumed earlier in the day
when you need the most energy and
have time to burn them off.

I have been to many conventions over
the years but none like Phoenix
Comicon! The people, the convention
hall itself, the panels, and the exhibitors
gave this convention certain flair and
feel that other conventions I have been
to just do not have. I felt privileged to
be a part of the experience because it
was certainly an experience.
Being a first time visitor and attendee to
the Phoenix Comicon was, at first, a bit
overwhelming and even a little
claustrophobic. There are an immense
number of people who attended this
year (a staggering 40,000 people). The
vast majority of attendees were fans of
one of the numerous shows, comics, or
anime that was represented, some
attendees were there to see one or
more of the celebrity guests, and
another large group of attendees fit into
the category of Cosplayers. It was a sea
of costumes, favorite T-shirts and swag
encompassing a large number of
fandoms. Being part of the USS Karme, I
wore my Away Mission T-shirt and
became one of those celebrating and
showing off fandom. My real geek
emerged from behind closed doors and
had forever been unleashed on the
world at large.

and we were afforded front row seats to
the big panels that were held in the
ballroom of the convention center. Two
of the biggest panels that I attended
were the Star Trek related ones –
William Shatner and the Star Trek Next
Generation 25th Anniversary panels.
While I was not front row at Shatner’s
panel, I was fascinated by his talk. He
was witty and funny. He told stories and
shared memories. The fans who were
able to ask questions were joked with as
they either did not know how to speak
into a microphone or they were so
flustered that the could not make a
coherent question for Shatner to answer.
I was duly impressed with Shatner as I
have previously been underwhelmed by
him as a person and as an actor.
Paul Williams and I were lucky enough
to receive free tickets from friends of a
friend, who would not be able to attend
due to a family emergency. The friend
had paid for Media passes and they
simply changed the name of the
attendees to ours. Since we were filling
in for them, we were asked to provide
pictures and information for their
business specifically about Cosplay. So
Paul and I interviewed random people in
costume and asked them about the
culture of Cosplay and the associated
stigmas attached to being part of such a
fandom.
Now, the STNG 25th Anniversary panel
was a front row seat type of event.
Being that I had a media pass, I was able
to sit directly in front of the panel (on
the floor) and take pictures and video. It
was the closest I have even been to any
celebrity in my entire life. The attendees
for this panel were Levar Burton,
Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Brent
Spiner, and Wil Wheaton (the order at
the table from left to right). Also sitting
on the panel was one of the episode
writers Larry Nemecek. The most
talkative and active guests during the
panel were Marina, Brent, and Wil.
These there developed a banter that was
lively and very amusing. I did not realize
how short Marina really is until she
stood next to Brent and Michael. Brent
is a funny character and has a comeback
quip for most anything being said. Wil
was also humorous as he and Brent tagteamed Marina with comments. All in
all, I had a great time seeing the star
interact with each other in a casual
environment.
The Media passes allowed us access
unlike anything I had imagined. We got
to stay late in the exhibitors hall, we
could wander into places that most

An integral part of the Phoenix Comicon
is the Geek Prom. It’s a costume event
that rivals Halloween. Proceeds benefit
Kids Need to Read and it was well worth
it. The costumes ranged from comic
book heroes to anime to Dr. Who to Star
Trek and Star Wars. Paul and I decided
to rent some costumes and go to the
prom – he was Luke Skywalker from
Tatooine and I was Princess Leia from
Episode 4. The funny part of the
costumes is that Paul has a goatee and
mustache that is dark brown but he
wore the blond wig for the luck
costume. The combination was quite
comical, which made it all the geekier. I
was rocking the Leia outfit complete
with a hair bun wig. It was really cool to
be asked by other people for a picture as
Paul and I had been doing that all day to
people.
Overall the atmosphere of the Phoenix
Comicon was one of fun, fandom, and
being a geek in a place that it is safe and
acceptable to be such. Society puts so
many stigmas on the notion of being a
nerd or a geek that is generally negative
and hateful. I think that most people
who are not geeks are just plain ignorant
to the delights and joys of such a label.
When you come down to it, being a geek
or a nerd is no different from being a
sports fan or a concert goer. Each subculture of activity has its own way of
having fun. Geeks just do it differently!

culture or group of people? Has this
excitement ever turned into such
fervor that you attend an event that
highlights said culture or group?
Well, that is exactly what some of us
on the Karme decided to do. Anna,
Donn, Alex, Jonathan, Stacy, Paul,
and Cynthia along with members
from local Klingon ship - George and
Heather attended the annual
Matsuri Festival of Japan the last
weekend in February.

In closing, let me say again, PLEASE CONSULT A
DOCTOR before starting an exercise plan or diet. You
know, I don't like that diet word. To me, diet implies a
temporary change that you'll stop doing once you get to
your desired weight. New habits must be learned and old
ones tossed away. Remember, the weight went on slowly.
It has to come off the same way. I've dropped to 203 now,
and my next goal is to get below 200. After that, I want to
get to 180 or lower.
In closing, let me say it wasn't my intent to
lecture or insult anybody. Quite the opposite, I hope I have
given you some ideas and some hope. You can lose
weight. Now, go do it!

units, the 49th MSG, The Fallen
Angels of Mercy, U.S.S. Golden
Gate and the 26th MSG, the
Rogues, U.S.S. Karme. Please
join me in bringing them aboard
and making them feel welcome
in the 4th.
The Brigade has grown
to eight units with more
requests on the horizon!
