First Year Advising and Exploration (FYAE)
assist students in their transition to college
and throughout their first year in college.
Each incoming student is assigned a
professional first year academic advisor
to serve as a resource in their transition
to UCF, clarify academic requirements,
explore and declare a major, develop short
and long term goals, discuss academic
progress, develop a program of study, and
assist with the registration process for
classesFirst-time-in-college students who
enter the university without a declared
major will also be advised by FYAE
advisors. Our Major Exploration Program
(MEP) assists students to explore majors
and careers through on-line assessments,
specific advising programs for undeclared
students and assistance through the
Career Services office. Undeclared
students are strongly encouraged to
connect with their academic advisor
often through this exploration time period
to discuss your online self-assessment
results and learn about resources to help
you with the major exploration process.

The First Year Experience Office
(combining orientation with extended
first year transition programs including
PegasusPalooza, Family Weekend,
LINK/Ultimate Knight and the Strategies
for Success course) assists entering
freshmen and transfer students with
their transition to the University of
Central Florida by providing information
about student services, campus life,
academic support, academic advising,
and registration. In addition, LINK/
Ultimate Knight assists freshmen in their
transition by creating, coordinating and
promoting campus-wide co-curricular
educational programming and activities.
Each year, a group of specially trained
student leaders is selected to serve
on the Orientation Team. Students are
selected to serve based on academic
standing, outstanding leadership,
communication, and teamwork skills.
Students may also elect to participate
in a First Year Experience course (SLS
1501) that deals with transition issues
such as study skills, time management,
campus involvement, career planning,
diversity, and numerous other topics.
It is a three-credit elective course
that counts toward graduation.

Learning and Interacting with New
Knights (LINK) First Year Experience
Program assists freshman college
students with their transition to the
University of Central Florida (UCF) by
creating, coordinating and promoting
campus-wide co-curricular educational
programs that enhance students’
personal and academic success.
LINK is designed to guide freshmen
through the rigors of the first year of
college. In collaboration with other UCF
student support programs, departments,
and student organizations, LINK identifies
educational and social opportunities that
all first year students should participate in.
These co-curricular events complement
the in-class academic experience and help
first year students build community and
develop the skills to succeed in college.
Transfer and Transition Services (TTS)
assists transfer students with academic
and transition advising before, during,
and after their transfer to UCF. Staff
and Peer Mentors provide advising and
advocacy for students through orientation
advising and assistance during their
transition to the university. TTS also
advises undeclared juniors and seniors,
students changing majors, and students
not admitted to limited access programs.
TTS staff and Peer Mentors advise
by appointment, walk-in, telephone,
and e-mail. We provide the following

The Office of Experiential Learning (OEL)
assists students to apply what they are
learning in their classes and gain realworld experience related to their major,
or career goal through co-op, internship,
and service-learning courses. Through
these courses, students learn course
content through major-related learning
experiences; apply classroom theory
in real-world settings; develop relevant
academic, personal and professional
skills; gain additional education through
professional supervisors and mentors;
clarify academic goals and interests;
and enhance the potential for future
success. Students may earn credit if
it will apply to their degree program
and may earn competitive salaries.
OEL offers advising, discipline-related
resume/interviewing preparation,
workshops, on-line postings, referrals,
course registration, and course
instruction. Students may apply
online and walk-in from 8:30 – 4:30
Monday-Friday to see OEL faculty.
For example, at 4EK’s Knight of Success,
students can learn from a panel of UCF
alumni about their paths to success.
Through FUN events such as 4EK
Socials, Movie Knights, Oozefest (mud
volleyball) and Homecoming, 4EK
members are able to connect to each
other. There are also scholarships and
leadershipopportunities available.
As a 4EK member, your student will
also receive great benefits including
a 4EK lanyard with membership key
card, FREE scantrons, local restaurant
discounts (on and off campus), 15% off

The Office of International Studies
administrates UCF study abroad options.
Participants in the variety of UCF
programs can earn regular credits for their
course work. Tuition and program fees are
paid directly to UCF. There are two main
types of UCF administered programs,
short term and Reciprocal Student
Exchanges. Admission requirements
vary depending on the program.
Short-term programs are regular, UCF
faculty led courses that have been
modified to take advantage of the
geographic and cultural details of a
location outside the US. There are a
variety of options for different interests
and budgets. The programs vary in
length (from a week to a semester) and
have single or multiple instruction sites
Student exchanges are programs where
students from UCF attend a university
abroad while students from the partner
university come to UCF, each earning
credit at their home university. The
partner institutions and their coursework
have been evaluated to ensure that
participants in these programs will have
an educational experience consistent
with UCF standards Semester and
academic year exchange programs are
open to qualifying juniors, seniors or
graduate students who would like to
have an extensive experience abroad.
Students can apply most financial aid to
UCF Study Abroad programs. Additionally,
students may apply for some UCF
administered scholarships, as well as
other non-UCF funded ones. For more

UCF has many academic advising
resources. Academic advisors are
faculty, professionals, and peers who
are dedicated to helping students
make a successful academic transition
and complete their degree in a timely
manner. Academic advising is one of
the most important services provided
at UCF and can impact a student’s
successful progression to graduation.
Academic Advising is a process that
assists students in the clarification of
life goals and the translation of these
goals into education plans. Students are
provided with assistance as they explore
educational opportunities and develop
educational plans and objectives. First
year students at the University of Central
Florida (UCF) are assigned to an academic
advisor during their freshman year,
and as they progress academicallywill
be transitioned to the academic
advisors in the college of their major.

SARC provides students with free peer
tutoring services at 3 facilities (SARC,
VARC and CECS) in over 40 different
subject areas, focusing mainly on STEM
and Business courses. Subject areas
tutored include accounting, astronomy,
biology, chemistry, physics and statistics.
SARC strives to be student-centered by
encouraging active learning; therefore,
peer tutoring is typically conducted
in a group setting. SARC peer tutors
are undergraduate students who have
earned a high grade in the class they
are tutoring and have received an
outstanding recommendation from a
UCF faculty member. No appointments
are necessary at SARC peer tutoring.
Transfer Students
Transfer students needing assistance
can contact the office of Transfer and
Transition Services (Howard Phillips Hall 221,
(407) 823-5959) for general advising and
referral information, as well as specific
advising for transfer students who are
undeclared, undecided, or changing
majors. Peer Mentors also work in the

office to assist new transfer students in
making a successful transition to UCF.

receive academic advising in the college
or department of their major. In many
cases, faculty members serve as advisors.
SARC also offers Supplemental Instruction
(SI), a series of free weekly study sessions
for students taking historically difficult
courses such as chemistry, biology,
physics, anatomy, and geology. Attending
SI sessions is voluntary and is a chance
to get together with other students to
compare notes, to discuss important
concepts, to develop strategies for
studying and learning the subject, and
to self-test prior
to an exam. At
each SI session,
the SI leader,
a competent
student who has
previously taken
and passed the
course, will guide
students through
the course material
and demonstrate
the most effective
skills to apply to
the course content.

The goal of the Math Lab is to offer
the highest quality service to students
requiring assistance in lower-level
mathematics classes up to and including
differential equations. We promote an
atmosphere that is conducive to learning,
which makes the lab an ideal place for
those wanting to work on a homework
assignment or study for an upcoming
exam. We also have solution manuals for
many of the courses with which we assist.
Past results have shown that regular
attendance of the Math Lab can make a
difference in gaining a higher grade, so
we strongly recommend that students take
advantage of the resources available.

UCF GUIDE
The University Writing Center (UWC) has
a dual mission. One goal is to provide
free individual and small-group writing
assistance to UCF students, faculty, and
staff from first-year to graduate in every
discipline. A second aim is to engage
peer writing consultants in a rich teaching
and learning experience, via on-going
education and professional development
in writing center research, theory, and
practice. Our purpose is not merely to
fix papers or to make better writers, but
to facilitate understanding of complex,
situated writing practices, in and outside
the University. To that end, the UWC
coordinates writing support with the
First-Year Composition Program and the
Writing Across the Curriculum Program.
Writers may schedule an appointment
via our website or by phone. Walkins are also welcome. Consultations
are scheduled for 30-45 minutes.

Campus Safety
A complete overview of police services
and crime prevention information is
available in a free brochure titled, “Annual
Security & Fire Safety Report.”This
brochure reveals UCF crime statistics,
the Emergency Alert System, a statement
regarding Missing Persons who live on
campus housing, the Fire Safety Report
in accordance with the Federal Crime
Awareness and Security act of 1990,
available on the police website. The
University employs law enforcement
officersto protect and serve our students
and employees. Uniformed officers patrol
the campus, Knights Circle, Pointe at
Central, and Rosen Center apartments,
and the new Medical Center at Lake Nona,
24 hours, 365 days a year in marked
patrol vehicles, bicycle patrol, and foot
patrol. Each officer is professionally
trained and certified through a police
academy. They are empowered by law
to make arrests on the property under
control of the University. The University
Police Department also has Mutual
Aid Agreements with neighboring
jurisdictions in case of emergencies when
requested. Police reports and code of
conduct violations are sent to the Office

Health Care. The mission of Health
Services is to provide excellent healthcare

Located on the southeast side of campus
near the Libra residence halls, this
outpatient facility provides primary and
limited specialty care services to the UCF
community. Registered UCF students
can use the Health Center regardless of
health insurance coverage. As a courtesy,
insurance claims are filed by our office.
Students are required to pay a statemandated health fee each semester. The
health fee entitles students to unlimited
visits with Health Services’ physicians
without an office charge and provides
discounts on diagnostic tests, various
medical procedures, pharmacy products
and other services at the Health Center.

women’s clinic, immunizations and travel
clinic, x-ray and laboratory services,
allergy clinic, psychiatry, clinical
