Special to the Courier
Cannon County Farmers Market is about as close as
you can come to "taking a salt shaker out in the
garden" to eat fresh tomatoes.
Tomatoes, especially, are better when they're homegrown, opines Jerry D. Smithson as he sells tomatoes,
summer squash, eggplants and other fresh-picked
veggies every Saturday morning at the Farmers
Market.
"I like a good acid tomato that tastes like a tomato,"
he says. "Used to, you could go the field and eat 'em
right out of the garden. I'd take a little shaker of salt
for them."
Why doesn't he do that anymore? "I've just started
eating them in the house-it's cooler."
But on Saturday mornings, Smithson and other
local farmers offer that sort of convenience combined
with garden-fresh quality to the general public by Polly Campbell reaches to pay for the tomatoes she
bringing their produce to the market in the Arts bought from local grower Harold Duggin at the
Center parking lot at 1424 John Bragg Highway.
Cannon County Farmers Market.
They pick the vegetables the day before and pack
them during the night or early in the morning to have morning." Now, by around 9:30 a.m., he has about 80
them available beginning at 6 a.m. each Saturday to pounds left "so far-I hope to move these before
sell. But even though the Farmers Market stays open dinnertime."
He had sold about 140 pounds at $1.50 a pound,
till around noon, don't wait too late to come get yours.
By 9 a.m. or so, better than half the veggies are sold, earning about $210.
Duggin and his wife Earlene, both Cannon County
and the local growers are grateful.
"I'm lucky I can come here," says Harold Duggin, natives, are retired from work in local shoe factories.
with tomatoes, cucumbers, and other veggies lined up Duggin also worked about ten years for the Farmers
for sale under his tarp at the back of his pick-up truck. Coop in Woodbury. But now they raise and sell

“Porkchop”
Dixon has been charged
with a $17,850 burglary in
the Short Mountain area.
He also faces similar
charges in connection with
a break-in in nearby Warren
County.
Dixon’s arrest was one of
several different burglaryrelated
charges
filed
recently by the Cannon
County Sheriff’s Department and the Woodbury
Police. Dixon is a resident of
Cumberland County.
“I received some information about some guns that
had been stolen in Cannon
County,” said Investigator
Anthony Young.
The guns had been stolen
by man nicknamed “Porkchop,” Young said. “His
real name was Zackhary
Dixon.
“At this point, myself and
Investigator Brandon Gullett went to talk to one of
victims of this theft,” he
said.
The victims of the Cannon
and Warren County burglaries were kin.
“We found out Mr. Dixon
had been friends with the
victims of the theft. It was
told to us that when he tried
to sell these guns they were
in the trunk of his car,”
Young said.
Young and Gullett were
joined by an officer from the
Warren
County Sheriff’s
Department in their investigation.
“We made a call to the
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and asked
them if they could make
contact with Mr. Dixon,”
the investigator continued.
“A short while later, myself
and Investigator Gullett
received a call from
Cumberland County Sher-
Zackhary Dixon
iff’s Department and they
had stopped Mr. Dixon and
he, in fact, had the guns in
the trunk of his car.”
Not all of the guns were
recovered. The suspect said
he got afraid and discarded
much of the stolen goods.
“We recovered five of the
stolen guns. He stated the
rest of the guns he threw
over the bridge of Center
Hill Lake,” Young said.
Among the discarded
guns was a German World
War II pistol with Nazi
markings on it. That pistol
was valued at $2,000.
Approximately 13 pistols,
long rifles and shotguns
were stolen.
A safe was also stolen that
contained a $5,000 Rolex
watch and several valuable
rings
“Mr. Dixon was transported back to Cannon
County Jail where he was
booked in with charges
including theft over $10,000,
aggravated burglary and
criminal trespassing. Theft
charges in Warren County
are awaiting Mr. Dixon,”
Young said.
In an unrelated case,
Investigator Young and
Sheriff
Darrell
Young
arrested two men on
criminal
trespassing
charges,
preventing
a
possible break-in.

Just what does
the United Way
offer Cannon?
Through a generous partnership with
the Cannon Courier, this week's edition of
the Courier launches a monthly column
from your United Way of Rutherford and
Cannon Counties. Our hope and intent is
to inform, present timely information,
and to educate the community on United
Way's mission in Cannon County.
What is United Way? United Way is a
non-profit, volunteer-driven organization
led by a local all-volunteer Board of
Directors.
We focus on determining the
underlying causes of the most important
issues in our communities and work to
advance the common good by focusing
on the building blocks of a better life;
education, income, health, and rebuilding
lives.
Prior to 2005 United Way of Rutherford
County acted as an administrator for
contributions designated for Cannon
County from Rutherford County and
various other United Ways. However,
realizing that with this system there were
no measurements in place for impact and
outcomes for the programs that were
receiving this funding, the Board of
Directors at the United Way of Rutherford
County voted to incorporate Cannon
County into their organization.
FAYE NORTHCUTT-KNOX
Much has
changed
since
Cannon
County
joined
United Way.
United Way
of
Rutherford
and Cannon
Counties has a long tradition of adhering
to very high standards of accountability
and transparency as a member of United
Way Worldwide. United Way is audited
annually by an independent CPA firm
and the audit results are reviewed by the
all-volunteer Finance Committees and the
Board of Directors. As a result of this
transparency, United Way can now track
partner programs in Cannon County and
report back to the community the
outcomes of those programs and the
impact those programs have on our
community.
In the coming months, this column will
focus on the individual programs that
directly provide services to Cannon
County and how your generous
investments in your community are
changing lives in a positive manner.
From The Editor
Courier Columnist
Will there be good
dogs in heaven?
I don't do a heap of transmitting on
Facebook, but I regularly cruise the site
because I'm a people-watching person.
Some say I'm just plain nosey. But hey, at
least I'm paid to be nosey!
That's when I saw longtime
friend/neighbor Jan Schilling's
despondent dispatch about losing her
canine family member, Pagola, to "Damn
Cancer."
Jan's heart-aching words touched my
own dog-loving spirit: "R.I.P. Pagola. You
were the best dog. Damn Cancer!! I am
heart-broken."
Her soulful sharing brought tears and
triggered my impulse to pen a short piece
on Facebook re-asking the question: "Will
There Be Good Dogs in Heaven?" …
similar to a newspaper column I did two
years ago that touched a lot of reader
hearts.
Within seconds Jerome Daniel
Dempsey, another longtime friend,
responded thusly on Facebook: "Dogs are
truly man's best friend. I sure hope my
'Lucky' is safe and sound somewhere
here on earth. If not, I know Lucky is in
heaven."
Engineer Dempsey's response helped
trigger requests from people in multiple
states asking me to re-run my column
from years' past asking "Will there be
good dogs in Heaven?"
A picture is posted of Lucky, in case
you've seen Dempsey's lost family
member.
The key word asking about dogs in
heaven may be good, according to
Cannon County country boy philosopher
(the late) C.L. Vickers.
"I know my two best coon-hunting
dawgs are up there wait'en on me," C.L.
prophesied from behind the galluses of
his best starched and ironed Liberty
overalls. "But….."
That proved to be a big but that C.L.
added: "But there ain't no egg-sucking
dogs in heaven."
Woodbury Mayor Harold Patrick can
vouch that those were the exact words
from C.L.'s mouth before our mutual
friend died in 2001 to join his coon dogs.
World-acclaimed evangelist Billy
Graham once sermonized the opinion
there are canines in the clouds.
And country preacher man A.C.
Sullivant eulogized the opinion from his
pulpit that
Hitler, my
loyal old farm
Whittle’s Words
dog of youth,
was up in
Of Wisdom

crop was growing.
And I put C.L. Vickers' opinion right up
there with Reverends Graham and
Sullivant.
Will you take Mark Twain's word for it?
"Heaven goes by favor. If it went by
merit, you would stay out and your dog
would go in."
Will Rogers spoke about it too: "If there
are no dogs in heaven, then when I die, I
want to go where they went."
Notable Murfreesboro historian/author
Shirley Ann Farris Jones did some
research on the dogs in heaven question:
"I asked Presbyterian Minister Ralph
Lewellyn, 'Would my dog Annie be in
heaven?' He assured me Annie was in
heaven. I then asked: 'Will the woman
who poisoned my dog be in heaven? Not
receiving assurance that she would go the
opposite direction, my friends and I
egged her house each Halloween!"
My original dogs in heaven inquiring
column was triggered a few years ago
when Smyrna Lions Club member Ken
Love interrupted one of my story-telling
sessions with a question about whether
there will be good dogs in heaven.
After 20 minutes of sincere debate Ken
left the building, but not before sharing
he thought there will be good dogs in
heaven.
Two days later neighbor Ken Love died
of heart failure. Then, a day after Ken's
passing, his beloved dog died too. It was
the right thing to do when Ken's grieving
family placed the puppy In Ken's casket
before burial.
"It was what husband Ken would
want," shared Linda Love.
The Rev. I.N. Sheffield, who has a
doctorate in theology, shared this Biblical
opinion: "There are passages indicating
there are other animals in heaven … as in
horses and lions, for example … so I see
no reason why there won't be good dogs
in heaven."
Busy week results
in projects finally
coming to fruition
It's been a busy week in Woodbury. A
number of projects seem to be finally
coming together like the new Farmer's
Market stand at the Arts Center of
Cannon County.
Federal grants are paying for the
structure, but it took the Cannon County
Commission awhile to approve the
project. Why? The crazy rain during July
slowed approval. A commission vote was
delayed until mid-July due to the
objections of a couple of commissioners.
Those guys were upset because the
recent high-water on Stones River flooded
a goodly section of the land next to the
Arts Center.
Commissioner Russell Reed led the
debate against the Farmer's Market,
protesting that the site adjacent to the
Arts Center of Cannon County was prone
to flooding.
"The federal government has paid for
it," said Commissioner Kevin George. "If
we get to use that maybe 10 years, five
years or two years it's worth it."
Commissioner Jim Bush agreed with
Reed about the site.
"I have a problem with where we are
building it. Move it up the hill," Bush
said.
The shed will be built on a concrete slab
with metal roof. The materials for the
structure had been delivered before July
13 The commission voted 7-2-1 with Bush
and Reed voting no and Kevin
Mooneyham absent.
At deadline, contractors were busy
preparing the site for construction. It is
located next to the Arts Center parking lot
and nearly within spitting distance of the
center's building.

Speaking of the County Commission,
that group will convene at 5 p.m. Tuesday
to approve Cannon County's budget and
set the tax rate for 2013/2014.
Part of that budget is expected to go for
two SROs for county schools.
SRO is the abbreviation for school
resource officer.
Last week, two potential SROs from
Cannon County underwent training in
Murfreesboro. A total of 26 law
enforcement officers took part in the 40hour class taught by two Rutherford
County officers, who are both national
instructors for the National Association of
School Resource Officers.
My Take
Topics
covered
MIKE WEST
included the
foundations of
school-based policing, the learning
process, effective presentations, effective
communications in schools, drugs,
alcohol and addictive behavior, special
education, school law, child abuse, school
safety, crime prevention and critical
incident management.
SROs learned to write lesson plans and
to handle advisory sessions dealing with
adolescent and family issues.
Yes, if approved by the County
Commission, the two SROs will do much
more than provide security at CCHS.
The officers will serve as a mentor to
students and will provide counseling
services in addition to serving police
duties.
It is a difficult program to understand,
unless you have seen it in action.
In Rutherford County it is popular
program, which has grown slowly over
the last 20 years. It has undoubtedly
saved lives.
We hope the Cannon County
Commission will approve its fledgling
SRO program.

My wallet is lighter after a Saturday
visit to the new Short Mountain Trading
Post which had its grand opening. We
enjoyed the food and music and those
durn crafts. The Trading Post is located
next to the distillery on Short Mountain
Highway (Route 146).

Speaking of great successes…. Have
you been to the new Cannon Outreach
and Thrift Store at 214 S. McCrary St.?
Opening last Wednesday, the Thrift
Store is doing big business with shoppers
even wanting to buy the window
displays. Sorry, those aren't for sale!
Perhaps one of the big draws is that the
gently used clothing has been washed,
even ironed before it hit the hangers. But
there's more than clothing available at the
shop, so go check it out.
A non-profit organization, the Thrift
Store's proceeds are used to benefit
Cannon County SAVE (domestic violence
program) and to provide nutritional food
for the Food Backpack program for local
children.

READ ALL ABOUT IT
PETTUS READ, Guest Columnist
Slipping off from chores to learn from the best
The day after the Fourth
of July, I spent the
afternoon in our local
theater watching a movie I
had been waiting on for
sometime. The movie was
The Lone Ranger starring
Johnny Depp as Tonto and
Armie Hammer as The
Lone Ranger. I would have
to say it was not The Lone
Ranger of days gone by,
but it was sort of what I
expected and it entertained
me on a rainy afternoon.
The thing about the movie
was how it returned me
back to some memories of
my Uncle Rob and
something he said once
about The Lone Ranger.
My Great Uncle Rob was
a person who lived life
somewhat in the past. He
never owned a TV, his
bathroom consisted of a
path out back, and he spent
his days hunting and
trapping. However, his
way of thinking was, “I’ll
leave you alone if you leave
me alone.” He didn’t care
for government programs
or a handout. He grew his
own meat, vegetables and
considered the first five
rows of corn on the side of
the road as public property.
He would often say to
me, “Tell me what you
need and I'll tell you how
to get along without it.”
And that is exactly what he
did. He got along without
a lot of things and seemed
to enjoy life just as much as
anyone. When he died,
there was very little for
others to argue over, not a
whole lot to preach to the
mourners
about
and
numerous funny and fond
memories of a man who
did very little to muddy the
water in that day’s world.
He did cause a great
nephew, which was I, to
long for the opportunities
once again of slipping off
from the house to go sit on
his porch when the great
nephew should have been
doing his chores. But Uncle
Rob was a folk hero to that
kid, and all these years
after his death, he still has
somewhat of an influence.
Some of his advice
included many things he
had read from stacks of
“Progressive Farmer” and
“Time” magazines that
filled one room in his old,
gray, weather boarded
house. Most of those
magazines came from fund
raising drives I was
involved in with FFA,
along with many others
given
to
him
from
neighbors
who
had
finished reading them. He
considered that back room
his library and never threw
one of those magazines
away. You could go by his
house at night and see him
sitting in his rocker by the
single lamp in his front
room reading through the
yellowed pages of back
issues of “Progressive
Farmer.” Not that he was
going to apply any of the
new farming techniques
demonstrated
in
the
magazines to his old
exhausted rocky farm, but
it kept him educated on
how to talk to others about
what was going on in
modern farming of those
days.
One time during a visit,
he showed me a quote in
an old, well-worn “Readers
Digest” that said, “Never
argue with an idiot. They
drag you down to their
level, then beat you with
experience.” I can still see
him smiling, somewhat
inwardly, and telling me,
“Pet, that is some good
advice that you need to
remember.” To this day,
that aged advice has
caused me to not answer
and even walk away from
several people during
many discussions. If you
have had a conversation
with me lately and I didn’t
answer you, please do not
take offense. Sometimes I
do not answer because I’m
thinking. I guess you have
to be the one to decide
which motive best fits my
reaction to your discussion.
It sure is amazing what
affect some individuals
may have on us when we
are growing up. I spent a
lot of time around older
people and still enjoy their
company since now I’m
one of the flock. While
attending
a
festival
recently, I met a friend
whom I had not seen for
quite a while. She told me
her mother really enjoyed
my column and was with
her sitting in a lawn chair
not too far from where we
were talking. She asked me
if I would meet her since
she was such a fan of mine.
Feeling
somewhat
overwhelmed and getting a
big-head
from
the
compliment, I told her I
would be glad to meet her
mother.
After
she
introduced me to her
mother, the nice, little grayhaired lady in her eighties
looked at her daughter and
said, “This can’t be Pettus
Read. The way he writes he
must be at least eighty
years old!”
How quickly we can be
lowered from greatness to
a
below-average
individual. However, as
Uncle Rob once quoted
from one of his old
magazines,
“When
confronted by a difficult
problem, you can solve it
more easily by reducing it
to the question, ‘How
would the Lone Ranger
handle this?’”
And I did just that. I bit
down on my silver bullet
and immediately turned
the situation over to my
friend, who could have
been Tonto, and left the
area saying, “Hi-Yo, Silver!
Away!”
And I wasn’t
talking about my hair
either!

THEFTS--Young and the Sheriff were
on patrol on Osment Road
responding to a report of a
“suspicious” person in the
area.
“While driving past 1346
Osment Road, we saw two
individuals in the backyard,
one wearing a bright green
shirt,” Young said.
The officers pulled into the
driveway and found one
man. “We asked him what
his name was. He said Ben
Paschal. We asked him
where the guy in the green
shirt was,” Young said.
Paschal responded that the
man in the green shirt had
walked across a field
adjacent to the back yard.
“We told him it was not
possible for us to not have
seen him as we drove down
the driveway,” Young said.
“I asked him why they
were there and they stated
they were trying to get a job
from the residents that lived
there.”
There was no one home.
Young again asked Paschal
where the other guy had
gone.
This
time
Paschal
responded, saying the guy in
the green shirt had gone
behind the barn.
“At this point, Sheriff
Young went behind the barn
to see if he could locate the
other person. He found the
person behind the barn
hiding behind a roll of hay,”
the investigator said.
The man, identified as
Jeffrey Smith, was asked
why he was hiding. Smith
responded that there were
warrants on him from Van
Buren and Warren Counties.
“We then placed both
individuals in handcuffs and
transported them to the
Cannon County Jail,” Young
said.
A joint investigation by
local authorities resulted in
the arrest of Blake Dean
Burton on multiple burglary
charges including a break-in
at West End Tobacco Outlet.
"Investigator Gullett of the
Sheriff's Department used
some online leads to find out
he was selling an X-Box
online. Once we found that
out, we were able to recover
the X-Box and a laptop
computer," said Assistant
Chief Lowell Womack of the
Woodbury Police.
Burton, 23, was tied into at
least three recent burglaries,
authorities said.
The laptop was stolen on
June 27 and allegedly
pawned by Burton at a
Murfreesboro pawn shop.
The X-Box 360 was stolen on
the same date along with
several games.
West End Tobacco was
burglarized on June 2. Taken
were some $2,575 worth of
cash, changed, lottery tickets
and cigarettes.
The laptop and X-Box were
recovered, but the missing
items from West End
Tobacco were not, Womack
said.
Hearings on Burton’s
charges are set for Aug. 20 in
General Sessions Court.
DEKALB--Concerning Cannon County’s defeat, County Mayor
Mike Gannon smiles, “This
was all in good fun and we
are proud of both counties
for their efforts. Mike Foster
and I had a good time during
the challenge. I am proud of
Cannon County’s hard work
and
congratulate
Billy
Moulder for representing us
well.”
The United Way of
Rutherford and Cannon
Counties recently held its
annual Stuff the Bus to
benefit at-risk children in
Rutherford and Cannon
Counties.
This year’s Stuff the Bus
resulted in 17,264 items
collected and 1,027 literacy

volunteers. The kits were
delivered to programs in
Rutherford and Cannon
Counties.
United Way will also be
participating in Literacy

FARMERS--produce.
"It keeps you out of the
chair," says Earlene. Her
husband adds, "A human's
like a machine-you've got
to keep it oiled."
Harold Underwood sells
his produce nearby. He
grew up in Homestead in
southern Florida, but he
moved to Cannon County
in 1984, two years after his
daughter married and
settled here. Underwood's
wife Dorcas is a native, but
her parents had moved to
Homestead when she was
in high school.
Underwood has created a
minor local population
boom by moving here, he
says: "I've got about 60
relatives that have followed
me to Cannon County out
of Florida. They just
wanted to get out of
Florida. They like Cannon
County--it's country."
Possibly the oldest farmer
at the market, Thurman
Bogle, 83, says he's been
raising veggies for sale "a
pretty good while. I done it
when I was a kid. I
drywalled for a number of
years, then I retired and
went back to doing it
again."
As a child, he was not
tending the vegetable crops
by himself by any means,
however -- it was a family
affair. "Our dad kept us
busy when we was kids,"
Bogle recalls. "There was
eight boys, and all gone but
three."
Bogle was one of eight
boys and two girls, plus
another brother who died
young.
They
raised
vegetables for a living. "It
was all my dad knew. He
farmed and truck-farmed.
When he done it, he'd go to
Murfreesboro and sell from
store to store. You could
sell to a store, then," Bogle
recalls.
Besides
his
prize
cantaloupes and baskets of
fresh-dug beets, Bogle was
selling beets he had pickled
and canned himself for $5 a
pint. "I'd bring 'em to
market to sell, and those
that didn't, I'd can 'em," he
says, describing his beetselling efforts earlier this
summer. When Bogle was a
child, "Mom was crippled
up with arthritis, and we
had to learn to cook," Bogle
explains.
In the 1950s, when
Underwood lived near
Homestead, Fla., Bogle
used to come down there to
do farm work, but the two
veggie farmers never met
until after Underwood
moved to Cannon County,
Underwood recalls: "It's a
small world. We both lived
down in Florida, and didn't
bump into each other."
Bogle replies, "We have
bumped into each other,
now."
"I worked for a farmer
down there" in Homestead,
Bogle explains. "We'd go
down there and spend the
winter, and come back in

Between customers at the Cannon County Farmers Market, Roy "Lynn" Parsley relaxes in the shade under the tarp at
the back of his pick-up truck where he sells a wide variety of veggies to customers hungry for fresh pickings. Buying
a bushel box of beans from Parsley, Carol Bogen of Woodbury told him, "I thank you for your hard work.”

the spring. We picked
beans, we put out beans-we
planted a lot of beans. They
shipped them out fresh.
There was one great big,
long one, and I put my
name
and
(Cannon
County) address on it. The
next spring, I got a letter
from a man in Texas-he
found my prize bean."
Truck farming is a family
tradition for Underwood,
too. "I got dirt in my
blood," he says. His family
has been truck farming for
several generations. "My
daddy, my grand daddy
and all my uncles grew
vegetables down there," he
adds with a soft southern
drawl. "I can't quit, so I just
keep doin' it."
His
grandson
Kyle
Klingler plans to follow the
tradition, too. "I always
worked it growing up, but I
want to raise cattle - there's
a little more money and the
work's easier," Klingler
says. "Vegetables are all
hand labor. But you work
cattle about once a year,
then you sell them."
Harold Duggin agrees,

growing vegetables 'til you

But this year at least, he's
had a little luck with water.
After
last
summer's
drought, he bought eight
soaker hoses and put one
down between each row.
"We haven't had to use
'em," he says. "The good
Lord watered 'em every
time they needed it."
Roy "Lynn" Parsley was
short-handed last Saturday.
His daughter Lindsay was
showing chickens, but he
brought her fried pies to
sell anyway: cherry, peach,
and apple. They were
almost all gone by 9. His
watermelons had long
since been snatched up by
buyers.
"I wish you could have
seen my melons," Parsley
adds with a touch of pride.
"I had 50-pound melons."
By about 10:30, Parsley
sold the last of his heirloom
purple-hull
peas
to
Dorothy
Elrod
from
Readyville. "I don't know
what you call them (the
peas)," she says. "But
they're really good when
you shell them out."
You can't eat the pods,
Parsley explains, but they
cook up like tasty soup
beans. "You have to shell
'em," he says. "Some people
call 'em pink-eye peas."
Jerry Smithson says one
of the advantages of the
Farmers Market is the
availability of heirloom
veggies and varieties that
aren't available in the
supermarkets. Plus, he
prices
his
produce
competitively.
"These go for $2 a pound
in the store," he says of his
DONNIE ESTES
baskets of variously shaped
and sized eggplants. "I get
$1.50. I try to stay under the
stores." Smithson either
recommends or prepares
eggplants cooked a number
of ways, including in
lasagna or "fried like
squash."
Smithson sold some of
his eggplants last Saturday
to Mary Van Trease of
Auburntown's
Cooper
Holler and her husband
Charles. They visit the
Farmers Market "every
Saturday, just about,"
Charles says, instead of
raising a garden: "I did
have one, but I give it up.
The rabbits got to it before I
did, usually. It's about as
easy to come over here and
buy it as to raise it."
Like Smithson, Parsley
has interesting veggies for
sale, too. His small, white
"patty pan" or "flying
saucer" squash are tasty
sliced and fried with new
potatoes and onions, he
points out.
He's been selling his
veggies at the Farmers
Market for seven or eight
years now, through three
moves. First, he says, there
was a market across town,
then it was on the square
and now it's at the Arts
Center, but he and the
other farmers are hoping
the market has made its last
move.
Construction of a new
pavilion for the Farmer’s
Market is now underway
next to the Arts Center.
"We've been working on
it for three years," Parsley
says, pointing to the
foundation and lumber at
the planned site. "We even
went to the state legislature
to get the grants."

Courier Sports Editor
CENTERVILLE - When
Cannon County football
players heard they were
going to summer camp at
the start of preseason
practice they were elated.
After all, what could be
better than swimming,
fishing, horseback riding,
canoeing and such right
before the start of school?
But when the players
arrived at Camp NaCoMe,
located
in
Hickman
County, they soon realized
this four-day retreat would
not be fun and games.
“It’s a lot of hard work
but we got better as a team,
that’s for sure,” senior
Dalton Bean said. “We put
in a lot of hours and we
focused on getting our
plays right and attention to
detail.”
What about the fun part
of camp?
“We had fun practicing
football and getting closer
as a team,” junior standout
Ethan Smith said. “We
didn’t go to camp to mess
around. We went to try to
become a better team.”
First-year
Cannon
County coach T.J. Daniel
said the camp provided
coaches and players with
an opportunity to come
together as a unit prior to
the start of school, as well
as focus on offense, defense
and special teams with few
distractions.

“The big thing was to get
away and focus on football
with limited distractions,”
Daniel said. “We were able
to accomplish that. We had
several
productive
practices each day. Mental
toughness is a big part of
football and doing this
helps with that aspect.
When you are tired and
having to fight through a
tough practice, or series of
practices, that’s when you
develop mental toughness.
I believe it was a good week
for us. Most importantly, I
believe we became closer as
a team.”
The Lions stayed in
cabins at Camp NaCoMe,
where they were treated to
three meals daily. When
they weren’t at the dining
hall, the Lions were eating,
sleeping and breathing
football with opportunities
to work on their game
throughout the day.
“We had a good time but
it was a lot of work, too,”
Bean said. “We had players
get better individually and
we improved as a team.”
The Lions have three
weeks remaining before
they open the season at
Middle
Tennessee

105 Blue Raiders Undefeated champions
report to camp
MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO
Head Coach Rick Stockstill
welcomed 105 veterans and
newcomers Thursday (Aug.
1) as the team officially
reported for the start of fall
drills.
"I really like what the
team has done in the
offseason and how hard
they have worked and
competed," said Stockstill.
"I am anxious to get on the
field Friday and see the
improvement our guys
have made in strength and
conditioning as well as skill
development.
"I like the attitude and
focus of this team. We have
a sharp edge about us and
we need to keep that edge.
This is a hungry bunch and
the key is to stay that way
and get better over the next
29 practices."
The
freshmen
and
transfers spent most of the
day in academic orientation
meetings Thursday before
taking photos and physicals
early in the afternoon.
Following a 5:30 PM dinner,
Stockstill will hold a senior
meeting at 6:45 PM,
followed by a team
meeting, before calling it a
day.
The NCAA's mandatory
acclimatization period will
begin with Friday's practice
and will conclude with
Tuesday's drills.
A total of 41 lettermen
and 16 starters highlighted
the list of players reporting
to camp Thursday.
The Blue Raiders had four
newcomers who did not
report, including Devante
Lee, Ed Batties, Kenderson
Obas, and Jahmal Jones.
On the injury front,
offensive linemen Jesse
Grisham will be out for
about two weeks before he
can begin drills while Craig
Allen, Jacob Corbaley,
Herbert King, and Stephen
Roberts will all be limited.
MTSU will open the 2013
season at home against
Western Carolina.

Teasers & Trivia
This week puzzle answers
Ask Ken Beck
Paul Newman’s cool Luke never swallowed any eggs
Dear Ken: In the Paul Newman movie "Cool Hand Luke,"
his character makes a bet that he can eat 50 hardboiled eggs
in an hour. How many eggs did Newman actually eat during
the filming of that scene?
Newman once told an interviewer, "I never swallowed an
egg." When then asked, "Isn't Method acting about doing the
real thing?" he responded, "Not if you have to swallow eggs."
However, he did consume gallons of popcorn during just
about every movie he made as he was a popcorn fanatic and
spoiled his crew members and fellow actors by often
popping and serving giant bags of popcorn at breaks in the
middle of the afternoon. In the 1980s, he debuted his
Newman's Own Popcorn, which continues to sell in seven
varieties. The profits from his various food products go to
Newman's Own Foundation that has dispensed over $370
million to thousands of charities since 1982.
Dear Ken: Can share some brief background on Joelle Carter,
who plays Ava Crowder in "Justified"?
Born in Thomasville, Ga., Crowder, 40, finished high school
in Albany, Ga., and earned an athletic scholarship to Augusta
State University for her prowess in swimming and cross
country. The former model has appeared in about 20 movies
including "The Horse Whisperer," "High Fidelity,"
"American Pie 2," "Swimming" and "Cold Storage." She and
husband Andy Bates have a 3-year-old daughter and a film
production company, which has won honors at film festivals.
Dear Ken: Who all has done the voice of Popeye in the
cartoons?
Popeye the Sailor originated in a comic strip in 1929 and first
appeared in an animated cartoon in 1933. William Costello
was the first voice of Popeye, followed by Jack Mercer. Also
speaking for Popeye have been Mae Questel, Harry Foster
Welch, Maurice LeMarche and Billy West. Now all together,
sing along: I'm Popeye the Sailor Man, I'm Popeye the Sailor
Man.
I'm strong to the finich cause I eats me spinach. I'm Popeye
the Sailor Man.
Dear Ken: What was Billy Joel's first big hit and is he still
performing?
Born William Martin Joel in the Bronx, N.Y., Joel, 64, had his
first hit with "The Piano Man" in 1973. Previously, he had
been in the bands The Echoes, The Emeralds, The Lost Souls,
The Hassles and then the heavy metal duo Attila. He became
a solo performer in 1971. The singer, pianist and composer
has concerts set for late this year in England and Ireland.
Married and divorced three times, he has a 27-year-old
daughter and is passionate about boats and motorcycles.
Among his biggest hits are "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me,"
"We Didn't Start the Fire," "Tell Her About It," "Just the Way
You Are," "My Life," "Uptown Girl," "The River of Dreams"
and "You May Be Right."
If you have a trivia question about actors, singers, movies, TV shows
or pop culture, e-mail your query to Ken Beck at [email protected]
