Recently, I shot video of a fishing trip on Banks Lake on a clear, bright day only to find out later that my ND filter setting was at 0. The result was over-exposed and grainy video that was unusable. A neutraldensity filter, or ND filter, is a filter that reduces or modifies the intensity of all colors of light equally giving no changes in hue of color rendition. These are usually attached to a lens for still photography but are built into most digital video cameras. Be sure to check the settings on your camera before you head to the field; don’t get exposed! -Richy Harrod Executive Producer New episodes for The Northwest Outdoorsmen are nearing completion and will be ready for airing starting this September. It's also officially one of our favorite times of year here at Work Sharp HQ in Southern Oregon. The sunny weather lets us enjoy outdoor grilling and cooking with family and friends. And whether you'll be camping, enjoying a picnic on the 4th, or hosting a BBQ at the lake - sharp knives will be part of your event. From fileting the day's catch to breaking down a rack of ribs, a sharp edge puts more meat on the plate and leaves less on the bone. Don't be caught struggling to cut through a watermelon this summer. Take pride in your edges and give them a good sharpening - then feel free to brag a little. That's what we do.Be Sharp. Be Ready. -Tim Oats, Work Sharp Mack’s Lure – Since 1969, the Wedding Ring Classic has been Mack's Lure is pleased to announce the purchase of a well known fishing lure company called Shasta Tackle company, makers of the famous Sling Blade, Cripplure, Hum Dinger, and Wiggle Hoochie. Having the opportunity to product test this pack, I was amazed at the many features incorporated into such a simple looking pack. The harness system, including the 2016 lumbar support waist belt is, hands-down, the best waist belt I have used. It allows your entire load to sit where it should, on your hips. Moving on to the actual pack, this carbon fiber frame is a full frame. This isn't a couple strips of carbon fiber, but it is designed to carry load after load. The bag is designed to be allow the load to slide between it and the frame, or you can remove the bag completely to make it a true haul frame. The bag is a roomy 3500 cubic inches as well, meaning you can easily do a 5-7 day trip with this bag. The ease of access to the side pockets, as well as internal pockets which are externally available, and this bag has a place to put everything. Made from 500 Denier, this pack is has heavy-duty fabric that will last a long time. I honestly believe this is the best pack on the market today. -Colin Hamilton, Horns and Hooks Harrod’s Cookhouse We are pleased to announce that you can now find our Wild Game Cranberry Sausage seasoning at Cinder Butte Meat Company in Redmond, Oregon. Issue #: No.11 [Date] July- September Dolor2016 Sit Amet Shed Hunting As the snow slowly melts from the higher elevation and the canyon grass starts to sprout, there is usually only one thing on my mind, and that is finding some BONE! Shed hunting has quickly become a favorite outdoor activity of many outdoor men and women. Why? You may ask. Well, I can think of many reasons to go burn boot leather looking for sheds but I will share a few to help you understand why so many people are raging about it. Monetary value has many people addicted to this sport. Depending on the year, brown elk antlers can bring as much as fourteen dollars per pound, but these prices don’t stick around for long. I look at it like playing the stock market. One year it could be great and then crash hard. Price goes up or down based on the market the different uses for antlers. Antlers are purchased mostly for dog chews, but also for art and furniture. From my standpoint, price is the last reason I partake in this sport. Scouting is great reason to beat the mountain sides. You usually won’t find the animals that shed their antlers in the same spot during hunting season but it will give you a great idea of what caliber of animal is in the area. It will also give you an understanding of how far an animal might travel from winter range to their summer and fall ranges. A lot of biological information can be gained by picking up shed antlers. You can see the growth and determine if the animal’s genetics are up to par, especially if you are lucky enough to find a set of antlers from the same animal year after year. To find elk antlers, you usually need to travel deep into canyon country, so being in great shape is a must. I love hunting antlers because I get some great exercise. My legs and my lungs receive the most strain during shed season. Sometimes we will go miles upon miles, up and down canyon walls in search of the elusive bull antler. It does wonders for the outdoorsman who sat around all winter and fumbled their thumbs. I usually start some kind of leg and cardio routine several weeks before I dive into the canyons. Mostly because I want to make it out of said canyon! By the time your archery or rifle season comes along, you will be in tip top shape. Of course there are rules and regulations for shed hunting. Check your state laws to make sure you are within regulations. Most importantly, simply be a good sportsman. Respect the animals and don’t push them off their winter range just to pick up one antler. Wait until the elk have moved on to their spring and summer range. Also, respect private landowners and do not trespass. Ask for permission, you might be surprised at the answer! Last but not least, respect your fellow shed hunter and don’t crowd in on someone; there is lots of country out there. Shed hunting has its ups and downs just as any other type of hunting. It’s not easy nor will you become rich doing it. You have to realize that there is a lot of competition now than in the past so be willing to go further than the last guy. I’d be a wealthy man, if I had a dollar for every time I watched that “ONE” bull all winter long and just before he shed he disappeared. My advice is to stay patient, stay in shape, and put your time in. Heed this advice and most likely you will be rewarded with a nice shed or two. -Justin Herold, Field Staff
