FIRST SKI CLUB MEETING
Wednesday, November 15,1989
The Kick 'N G l i d e r s w i l l hold t h e i r f i r s t club meeting of the season
next Wednesday, November 15 a t 7:30 p.m.. (see page 7 f o r 1989/90 meeting
schedule). As usual, i t w i l l be held a t the Wildware O u t f i t t e r s s t o r e o f f
Union Deposit Road i n the store's meeting room on the f i r s t f l o o r . A
slideshow previewing t h i s year's t r i p s w i l l be the program immediately
f o l l o w i n g the business session of the meeting. Norma Brandon, the club's
T r i p Coordinator as w e l l as several of the t r i p leaders w i l l be present
to answer your questions about upcoming t r i p s . See pages 3-6 of t h i s
e d i t i o n of the Easy G l i d e r t o get more d e t a i l s on some of the t r i p s
scheduled f o r January and e a r l y February. Don't f o r g e t t o b r i n g your
checkbooks since t h i s w i l l be a p e r f e c t time t o make a deposit on those
t r i p s you are planning t o attend. The e a r l i e r you make a deposit the

DISCOUNTS FOR THE EARLY SNOWBIRD
To encourage e a r l i e r t r i p signups and f a c i l i t a t e b e t t e r t r i p
planning, t h i s year the club Executive Board has decided t o o f f e r a $5
and even $10 discount on the cost of a t r i p i f the t r i p deposit i s
received by the club t r e a s u r e r by a c e r t a i n date. Also f o r a l l t r i p s ,
the e n t i r e cost of the t r i p must be paid i n f u l l t o the club treasurer
before the t r i p begins. The t r i p summary on page 7 provides information
on the deposit due dates f o r each t r i p . T r i p deposits and payments w i l l
be accepted a t any club meeting or can be mailed t o the club t r e a s u r e r at

"NEW YEARS IN VERMONT" TRIP
Thursday, December 28 through Monday, January 1
We are a l l set t o spend a second New Year's i n Vermont. The owners
of the Tweed River Inn, Paula and Ed McManns, have reserved room f o r
f o r t y - t w o Kick 'N G l i d e r s and are anxious t o have the club j o i n them
f o r New Year's again t h i s year. The Tweed River Inn i n B a t t l e f i e l d ,
Vermont i s located close t o Mountain Top, T r a i l Head and Mountain
Meadows, three e x c e l l e n t cross country s k i t o u r i n g centers f o r a l l s k i l l
l e v e l s , as w e l l as the K i l l i n g t o n and Pico d o w n h i l l areas f o r those who
choose t o t e s t t h e i r d o w n h i l l s k i l l s .
The cost w i l l be $130 per person unless members got t h e i r $60
deposit i n by the November 7 date advertised i n the October newsletter.
This includes 4 n i g h t s lodging (6 people per room & bath) and f o u r hearty
" a l l you can eat" breakfasts and dinners. Touring center fees which are
not included i n the t r i p cost are about $7-8/day. The Inn has i t s own
restaurant and bar and w i l l arrange f o r s l e i g h r i d e s i f we are
i n t e r e s t e d . Also a New Year's p a r t y complete w i t h a DJ, dancing, hats,
noisemakers and a b u f f e t w i l l be a v a i l a b l e a t an a d d i t i o n a l minimal
charge. We are also planning our annual KNG " t a l e n t show" f o r the shy,
not so shy and any one i n between1

CRYSTAL LAKE AT NORMAN LODGE
January 12-14 (w/Sun. night option)
This t r i p i s an o l d f a v o r i t e f o r the Kick 'N G l i d e r s . We'll be
s t a y i n g i n r u s t i c Norman Lodge as t r a d i t i o n would have i t , complete w i t h
those wonderful bunk beds. C r y s t a l Lake i s an e s p e c i a l l y good spot f o r
beginners because inexpensive lessons, r e n t a l s k i equipment and groomed
t r a i l s f o r a l l s k i l l l e v e l s are a v a i l a b l e . Since t h i s i s the Martin
Luther King weekend, i n d i v i d u a l s can opt t o stay over Sunday n i g h t f o r an
a d d i t i o n a l fee. Ask the t r i p leader f o r d e t a i l s i f i n t e r e s t e d . The t r i p
i s l i m i t e d t o 45 people.
The cost i s $65 (or $60 i f $30 deposit before Dec. 5) f o r the
weekend i n c l u d i n g Sat. & Sun. breakfast and Sat. dinner which i s provided
i n c a f e t e r i a of the Lodge. Lunches can be bought a t the c a f e t e r i a a l l
weekend. The cost of a weekend t r a i l pass i s included i n the t r i p p r i c e .
Ski equipment can be rented f o r $11 per weekend and s k i lessons average
$5 per lesson. C r y s t a l Lake has over 25 miles of machine-groomed and
t r a c k - s e t t r a i l s surrounding several lakes and ponds and covers some of
the most b e a u t i f u l mountain woodlands, elevations from 1550 t o 2100 , i n
the s t a t e . C r y s t a l Lake i s located 10-20 miles from Muncy, PA -about a
two and one-half hour d r i v e n o r t h from Harrisburg.
SCENIC LAKE MINNEWASKA
NEW PALTZ, NEW YORK
January 19-21
This w i l l be a brand new t r i p f o r the KNGers. We t r i e d t o b r i n g i t
i n t o our r e p e r t o i r e l a s t year but, the snow d i d not cooperate. We w i l l
be s k i i n g on 10,000 acres i n Lake Minniwaska State Park and a t the Lake
Minniwaska Ski Touring Center which boasts 64 kilometers o f doubletracked t r a i l s . New Paltz also o f f e r s some h i s t o r i c s i t e s i n c l u d i n g the
Monhnk Mountain House, a famous V i c t o r i a n c a s t l e w i t h surrounding grounds
t h a t also provides some wonderful s k i i n g .
The cost w i l l be approximately $25 per n i g h t f o r lodging (double
occupancy r a t e ) and a l l meals and t r a i l fees are e x t r a . We w i l l be
staying a t a l o c a l motel i n the area. New Paltz i s located i n southern
NY State about 4 hours from HBG.
The l i m i t f o r t h i s t r i p i s 12
people. There i s no discount f o r e a r l y deposit f o r t h i s t r i p but, a $25
deposit i s r e q u i r e d by December 20.

HIDDEN VALLEY SKI TOURING CENTER
January 26-28
We w i l l stay a t Kooser State Park, r i g h t beside the s k i t r a i l s , i n
two renovated cabins each w i t h bedrooms, a common room w/wood burning
stove, k i t c h e n w/ s i n k , r e f r i g . , stove & hot water. NO indoor t o i l e t s or
shower. We can use Hidden V a l l e y h e a l t h club's showers, p o o l , sauna and
w h i r l p o o l f o r a small fee. Bring your sleeping bag/bedding and h i k i n g
boots i f no snow. Downhill s k i i n g i s also a v a i l a b l e nearby. Kooser i s
located on US 31, about 12 miles from Somerset, PA.
The cost of the weekend i s $35 ($30 i f paid i n f u l l by November 15)
which includes Sat. and Sun. breakfast and F r i . and Sat. dinners. You
may also choose t o b r i n g your own meals o r go t o nearby restaurants but,
please inform the t r i p leaders i f you intend t o do so. Cabins are open
f o r use from Friday afternoon t o Sunday noon. T r i p l i m i t e d t o 12 people.

HANLEY'S HAPPY HILL
EAGLES MERE, PA
February 2-4
We plan t o stay a t the Cozy D e l l , a b e a u t i f u l , new p r i v a t e house i n
the town o f Eagles Mere, j u s t o f f the Hanley's Happy H i l l s k i t r a i l
system. The house sleeps 10 so the t r i p i s l i m i t e d t o t h a t number. The
house has a l i v i n g r o o m w i t h a stone f i r e p l a c e , d i n i n g area and
well-equipped k i t c h e n which w i l l a l l o w us t o cook our own meals. I t
also has a glass-enclosed sun porch, outdoor deck and hot tub.
The cost f o r the t r i p i s $75 ($65 i f $30 deposit paid by Nov. 15)
which includes 3 Saturday meals and 2 Sunday meals. The p r i c e may vary
s l i g h t l y a f t e r the r e n t a l fee i s f i n a l i z e d . Since the t r i p i s l i m i t e d ,
i t i s on a f i r s t come-first serve basis so get your deposit i n ASAP.

BLACKWATER LODGE

March 16-18
We w i l l be s t a y i n g a t Blackwater Lodge i n Blackwater F a l l s State
Park. This r u s t i c 55 room lodge s i t s on the r i m o f the spectacular
Blackwater River Canyon. The cross country s k i i n g i n the area includes
t r a i l s i n the s t a t e park i t s e l f , White Grass Ski Center which claims
the region's l a r g e s t network of set t r a c k s and the D o l l y Sods Wilderness
which i s an o f f i c i a l l y designated wilderness area. Other a c t i v i t i e s
a v a i l a b l e i n c l u d e d o w n h i l l s k i i n g , i c e s k a t i n g and h i k i n g .
The cost of the t r i p i s $35 ($30 i f $30 deposit by Nov. 15) not
i n c l u d i n g food o r t r a i l fees. Meals can be purchased a t the restaurant
i n the lodge o r nearby. Five rooms, each w i t h two double beds and a bath
have been reserved f o r KNGers. The t r i p i s l i m i t e d t o a maximum of 20
people.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT
Fellow KNGers:
On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Dick and Marty Ruben
for their generous hospitality in again hosting the club's annual Ox
Roast which was held on October 7 at their home in New Cumberland It was
great to see such as large turnout and the chilly yet beautiful day got
us all thinking of the ski season to come. I would also like to thank
Chef Winebrenner for his preparation of the delicious main course; as
usual the Ox was cooked to perfection.
I would like to say a few words about trip deposits and
cancellations because there may be some confusion about the club's policy
in this regard. When you and I make a trip deposit (or pay for the trip
in full) we are making a commitment but, there is an element of risk. If
you have paid in full and bedspace and food has already been reserved for
you and you do not show up, you may or may not receive any refund. This
will depend on each individual trip accommodations. For example, for
Crystal Lake if there is no snow and you decide not to go your deposit is
non-refundable because of the camp'sfixedexpenses. If you cancel early
and a replacement is found for your slot, your money will be refunded
When accommodations are at a motel like for the Lake Minniwaska trip
and the trip is cancelled, usually our motel deposit is refunded and the
club can then refund your money. In any event, it is not the club's
policy to make a profit at any member's expense. We will make an effort
to get your money back if you must cancel; however, it is also not our
policy to increase the trip cost for those who do attend in order to
provide a refund for those who cancel.
Our traditional cancellation policy is to avoid cancelling trips
even if conditions are marginal. This is partly because it is very
difficult to reach all trip members at the last minute. Instead of
cancelling the trip as a whole, we ask individual trip participants to
contact the ski area if they are particular about ski conditions, and are
not interested in other substitute activities like hiking or ice skating.
It is the member's responsibility to contact the trip leader so he or she
will not count you as a no-show and can begin working on recovering your
money ifpossible.
If anyone has questions regarding the trip cancellation and refund
policy, please bring them up at the November 15th meeting which will
include a discussion of the trips planned for this year. Hope to see you
all there. Let's get the 1990 season off to a great start!
