There’s never been a more critical time to support your farming
neighbors. In the past decade, farmers have seen their lowest
real net cash income since the ‘40s, while corporate agribusiness
profits have nearly doubled (increased 98%) since 1990. With each
local food purchase, you ensure that more of the money you spend

St. Peter’s healthy starts
After surveying students, parents and board members last year, St Peter’s Episcopal School discovered that serving healthy lunches was a top
priority to everyone. So in 2010, the school began its “Go Healthy, Go Green” initiative which encourages students, parents and staff to eat healthy
and stay active. The initiative included a lunch program overhaul by partnering with Greenlife Grocery to provide healthy, fresh foods that kids
love to eat. Greenlife incorporates local, organic food into the school lunch dishes whenever possible to create a monthly, mouth-watering menu
that is enough to make your tummy growl.
In addition to the changes in the lunch program, St. Peter’s has
also banned vending machines. With the help of parent and
community support they were also able to start an organic
school garden. The school’s garden will be used as an “edible
classroom” and will hopefully provide produce for school
lunches.
News of the school’s groundbreaking initiatives travelled to
Washington, DC where St. Peter’s Director of Development,
Jamie Melton, was asked to join in the White House Stakeholders
Meeting on Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative. Jamie and
34 other faith-based organization representatives are currently
collaborating to develop a toolkit for organizations to support
the Let’s Move initiative.

Tips for Eating Local
Food on a Budget
You’ve seen the signs- “Eat Local” “Buy Local” “Thousands of
Miles Fresher!” If you live, breath, work or eat in the Chattanooga
area, you are affected by your own food choices as well as the food
choices of others in your community. Our food decisions affect our
environment, our health– and also our wallets! For those who feel
their food budgets won’t allow them to “buy local”, here are a few

ideas to help stretch your food dollars, while supporting local food.

Food Without Canning or Freezing, Storey’s Basic Country Skills
and Wild Fermentation, and The Joy of Pickling.
Grow Your Own
You can purchase seeds and plants that grow food for a fraction
of the cost of produce. And it doesn’t get more local than your
own backyard! Gardening can fit most any living situation, from a
potted, windowsill herb garden to a vegetable container garden. The

purchase the entire animal. The price per pound is generally lower
and you’ll receive choice cuts along with ground portions.
Look for Dining Deals
While supporting establishments that serve local food, ask about
what specials they offer. At Earth Fare on Thursday nights, kids eat
free with any $5 adult meal purchase. Also, remember that because
most locally-produced baked goods are preservative-free, they
have a shorter shelf life. Neidlov’s pastries are half-price starting
an hour before closing each day, and they offer “day-old ” and “twoday-old” bread specials based on supply.

Growing Method Definitions:
Sustainable – sustainable farming methods are self-defined and may indicate such farm practices as the avoidance of synthetic fertilizers or
pesticides and utilizing humane livestock practices. The term “sustainable” is often used interchangeably with “non-certified organic”.
Certified Organic – a national certification by the USDA for farming organically, with regulations such as the avoidance of most synthetic
chemical fertilizers and pesticides and genetically modified organisms.
Certified Biodynamic – a national certification by Demeter USA for farms that meet the highest agricultural and environmental standards by
treating the farm as a living organism.
Non-certified Organic – organically-grown food that has not been certified by the USDA. These farms claim to meet or exceed the USDA
organic standards.
Certified Naturally Grown – an international certification for farms that is based on the USDA National Organic Standard Program- in
some cases, such as with livestock, the regulations are more stringent. Certification is based on the “Participatory Guarantee System” model,
which is a peer-review type certification program.
Farmers have self-identified their growing practices in the TasteBuds Local Food Guide. We encourage consumers to engage the farmers directly if they have
specific questions about farm practices, products or growing philosophy. Farmer claims are not certified or endorsed by TasteBuds.

farms
The Chattanooga region has a rich agricultural history and
continues today to produce a diverse array of quality fruits,
vegetables, honey and animal products. The TasteBuds Local
Food Guide lists 60 partner farms located in a 100-mile radius of
Chattanooga that sell their food products primarily to this region.
You may find their products at a local grocery store, a farmers’
market or through a CSA. Connect with the source of your food
- your farmer - to be a more educated consumer about the foods
that nourish your body.

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. A CSA is a program
by which individuals pay a farm to receive a weekly supply of the farm’s
offerings during the growing season. This can include produce, meats,
dairy, honey, eggs, flowers and more. Typical CSAs last from early spring
(May) through late fall (October), but every farm is a little different. CSAs
give people a way to connect with and invest in local farms through a
meaningful and mutually-beneficial relationship.
Listed below are farms that offer CSA programs to the Chattanooga
region. We hope you’ll find the one that is right for you!

community gardens
Community gardens give people the ability to grow their own
food, as well as contribute to the preservation & beautification
of open spaces. Additionally, gardening knowledge is passed on
and communities are enriched when the work and rewards of
gardening are shared. A community garden can be any parcel of
land gardened by a group of people, from backyards to schoolyards.
