It’s coming…….summer swim season is just
around the corner! Division 4 here we come!!!
As mentioned last month, there have been some
great new changes in the swim league as well as
some changes right here in Fairfield. We are now part
of a division that doesn’t include travel to Kingwood to
compete with teams that are twice our size (nor do we have to compete with
those pesky Whitesharks!). We are also excited to announce the addition of
Fleet’s and the Texas Terrapin’s very own Coach Barbara Harold as the head
coach of our FAST Dolphins. We will also welcome back Kristen Sliker as
one or our assistant coaches again this year.
We hope this bit of news will get everyone as excited about swimming this
season as we are! See you at the pool!

It’s a CONTEST!
FOR EVERYONE
The Fairfield Women’s Club has been given the honor of
designing a new logo for Fairfield Village and would like the
community’s help. So get that community spirit and those creative juices flowing, design the best Fairfield logo and WIN a
GREAT PRIZE in doing so!
The details are:
Place your design on an 8-1/2” x 11” sheet of paper, using
only red, white, blue & black colors, e-mail your design to
Fairfi[email protected]. All e-mails must be sent in by
April 15. The winner will be notified by May 1, 2005 … just
in time for the new Fairfield Village logo to be silk-screened on
t-shirts and other various items to be sold at Fairfield’s Annual

fund raising program.)

JUNIOR GIRL SCOUT TROOP 14020
BRONZE AWARD SERVICE PROJECT
The Girl Scouts of Troop 14020 are currently working on their Bronze Award
and are sponsoring an Easter Egg/Stuffed Animal Toy Drive for Boys & Girls
Country. They are great need of Easter egg hunt supplies (baskets, grass, plastic
eggs, egg stuffers -candy, stickers etc.), stuffed animals and toys or gifts for ages
5 -18. There will be an actual Easter egg hunt for all the children 10 and under,
so they are hoping to collect enough for 24 kids to have a basket with a stuffed
animal and 500 filled eggs to hunt. The toys or gifts and any extra stuffed animals
will be donated to their “Birthday Room” - so they will have presents available
for the children’s birthdays as needed.
There are several drop boxes located throughout Fairfield - Hot Spot Tanning
Salon, Gambinos, Nestle, Dell’s Grill & Custard, Good Shepherd UMC and in
the Athletic Center through March 15th. For more information, please call troop
leader, Michelle Smith, 281-256-0678.
Thank you Fairfield residents for your support!

Interior Remodeling
My family brought me home cradled in their arms. They cuddled me and smiled
at me and said I was full of charm. They played with me and laughed with me
and showered me with toys. I sure do love my family, especially the girls and
boys. The children loved to feed me. They gave me special treats. They even
let me sleep with them, all snuggled in their sheets. I used to go for walks, often
several times a day. They even fought to hold the leash, I’m very proud to say.
They used to laugh and praise me, when I played with that old shoe. But I didn’t
know the difference between the old one and the new. The kids and I would
grab a rag, and for hours we would tug. So I thought I did the right thing when
I chewed the bathroom rug. They said that I was out of control and would have
to live outside. This I did not understand although I tried and tried. The walks
stopped one by one; they said they hadn’t time. I wish that I could change things.
I wish I knew my crime. My life became so lonely in the backyard on a chain. I
barked and barked all day long to keep from going insane. So they brought me
to a shelter but were embarrassed to say why. They said I caused allergies and
then they kissed me ‘bye. “You have only one day left...” I heard the worker say.
Does this mean a second chance? Do I go home today?

FAIRFIELD COMMUNITY GAZETTE
Dear Fairfield Residents,
Have you noticed the yellow ribbons around our neighborhood?
These pretty ribbons show support for our military men and women
serving our nation. I enjoy and appreciate seeing these ribbons on a
daily basis. You see, our son is a medic in the U.S. Army stationed
in Iraq and these yellow ribbons speak to me. Each ribbon represents a heart.
Thus, I’m asking you to display yellow ribbons in your yard to remind us all of the efforts
these people do to provide us the freedoms we enjoy daily.
With the recent deaths of several area service men, these ribbons take on a very personal
meaning. This letter is not intended to state whether or not our troops should be in Iraq; it
is much more personal than that. It is intended to persuade you to join together to make
Fairfield a premier neighborhood whose voices reach personally to individual service
personnel showing words of acknowledgement, appreciation, and encouragement.
Therefore, I am also asking individuals, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Women’s clubs,
sports teams, senior clubs, and churches to take time to send cards or letters to a specific
service person until they come home. If you would like an individual name and address
to send your words to, just call me (281-373-0142) and I’ll gladly provide you with one.
I’m sure there are other families in Fairfield who have loved ones and friends serving in
the military. If you would like to submit a person’s name and address as a recipient, drop
their information into the decorated box at the Fairfield Athletic Center.
Together we can reach around the world and bring Texas to those protecting us all!
Let’s Show Our SUPPORT!
Here’s one of our brave countryman
over in Iraq; please show your love and
support by sending Kevin cards, letters,
care boxes, whatever you can to show
him he’s in our hearts, thoughts and
prayers:

Moms In Touch International
Every week, in every state of the U.S. and in 85 countries around
the world, thousands of mothers meet to pray for their children
and their schools. They gather in Mexico, New Zealand, China,
Germany, India, Uganda, Egypt, Romania, Russia and many other
countries. They are all part of Moms In Touch International, an
interdenominational, nonprofit ministry of women who believe
prayer makes a difference.
The group was founded in 1984 by Fern Nichols while she was
stationed in Abbotsford, British Colombia with a Christian ministry. She had two sons entering junior high school. Nichols knew
her boys were going to face their greatest test yet in resisting
immoral values, vulgar language, and peer pressure. She found
other concerned mothers, and they began meeting for prayer.
The following summer Nichols and her family moved to Poway,
California, where by the fall of 1985, a group was established at
Poway High School. The women met once a week and prayed
for a full hour for their children and the school. They prayed
for a Moms In Touch group for every school in their district,
18
FAIRFIELD COMMUNITY GAZETTE - March 2005
and they shared the concept with their friends and other moms
they met. Two years later, Nichols published a Moms In Touch
booklet, and the following January the first Moms In Touch retreat
was held. Today there are thousands of Moms In Touch groups
meeting worldwide.
The organization’s goal is to have a group of two or more moms
praying for every school in this country and throughout the world.
We know our children face many challenges at school (academics,
drugs, peer pressure and violence), and to stand in the gap for them
through prayer is our highest calling.
The mothers meet once a week to pray for teachers, principals
and administrators, conferences, respect for authority, curriculum
choices, holiday situations, coaches and athletic programs, high
standards, family values, after school programs, problems faced
by the students and for the specific needs of the children of the
mothers in the group.
If you are interested in joining a Moms In Touch group,
please call Alecia Mallett at 281 -256-0433

We Need Volunteers and Families!
Family to Family Network is an organization that empowers families of children with disabilities by providing information, training, referral and support. We are
initiating a new project in the Houston area called Family
Friends. It is an intergenerational program that matches
volunteers (age 55+) with children with special needs and
their families. The Family Friend (volunteer) will visit
the home once a week for a couple of hours to offer support and encouragement by reading a book, playing, and
become a friend!
The family gains from the emotional support provided by
the volunteer. Their visits often give family members a
break from caring for their child with disabilities, all the
while knowing the child is in good hands.
The Volunteers offer their special skills, wisdom, support
and life experiences. They gain a sense of pride knowing
that they are making a difference in the family‛s life.
The Community is strengthened by volunteers providing
supportive services that would otherwise prove too costly
for the families.
If you are 55 years or older or have a child with a disability and are interested in this wonderful program,
Please call Patricia McMahan or Aline Houston at

TEXAS TERRAPINS
SWIM TEAM
MARCH 2005:
The Texas Terrapins
are coming to the end
of their first Short Course
season. We’re just back from our
first
travel meet in Baton Rouge, LA (the BTAC
Mardi Gras Meet) where we had great swims
from all. We are excited to have nineteen
swimmers qualified to swim in the endof-season “BB & up Spring Champs/Last
Chance TAGS” meet on February 25 – 27th.
And one swimmer, Joey Bell, has even qualified for TAGS (the biggest meet in Texas) in
March in the 100 breaststroke event!
The Long Course season begins after Spring
Break, with competitions held in 50-meter
outdoor pools. Though several of our swimmers will compete with the neighborhood
summer league, we look forward to a very
exciting LC season thru July.
In February, several members of the Texas
Terrapins Swim Team traveled to Baton
Rouge, Louisiana, to participate in the BTAC
Mardi Gras Swim Meet.
The Texas Terrapins Swim Team (TTST)
of Cypress, Texas is a year-round competitive swim team offering instruction and
competition to swimmers of all ages and
abilities. The Texas Terrapins Swim Team
provides a positive, supportive and fun-filled
environment where swimmers can improve
their skills and meet their individual goals.
Through the guidance of trained, experienced
coaches, coupled with the support of the families, we encourage team spirit, sportsmanship
and a lifelong love of the sport of swimming.

Your Child’s Winning Combination
Laura Zubrod MS, RD, LD
It’s that time of year again and sports will be in full swing before we know
it. Enabling our children to perform their best is as easy as focusing on their
eating, drinking and sleeping habits.
Give Me Fuel!
Be sure to fuel your athlete before he or she hits the field. Pre-practice and
Pre-game meals are an important part of your child’s performance.
Start every day with breakfast. An athlete without breakfast is like a car
without gas—neither will get very far. Stick to whole grain breads and cereals
(look for those with less than 10 grams of sugar per serving), fruit and low
fat milk and diary products. A sandwich or last night’s cold pizza can also
be great breakfast choices.
Feed your child a meal 1 ½ to 3 hours before practice or game time. Avoid
a fatty meal like a hamburger and French fries, which is slow to digest. Stick
to something easily digested and rich in carbohydrates like noodles, sandwiches, tortilla wraps, oatmeal, or cereal and toast. Eating too much or too
soon before an event can leave your child with less energy and possibly an
upset stomach. A light snack that is easily digested can be eaten 1 hour to
30 minutes before game time. Try a banana, a piece of toast, a few crackers
or half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Bring along healthy snacks for long practices, after games or all-day events
such as: bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, carrot sticks, ½ sandwich, pretzels,
animal cookies, granola bars, vanilla wafers, mini bagels, dry cereal, cheese
sticks, yogurt, dried fruit, crackers, 100% fruit juice, tortilla w/peanut butter.
Avoid sugary snacks like candy bars, cookies, donuts, sodas and fruit
drinks. These foods provide excess fat, sugar and calories. While they may
provide a quick burst of energy, they will quickly leave your athlete feeling
tired and hungry.
Fill ‘Em Up!
It is essential to supervise young athletes to ensure they are consuming
enough fluids. Did you know that children are:
• more susceptible to dehydration than adults and adolescents
• not as adept at handling extremes in temperature
• sweat less efficiently
• get hotter during physical activity
• often not able to recognize that they are thirsty or the symptoms of
heat strain
Be aware of these warning signs of dehydration: headache, fatigue, thirst,
nausea, dizziness, muscle cramping and vomiting.
Choose the right fluids
Plain, cool water is the best choice for children. Sweat contains more
water than sodium or potassium (electrolytes) and the priority for the young
athlete should be to replace the lost water rather than electrolytes. Sports
drinks are not necessary for children. For activities lasting longer than 90

minutes, sports drinks can provide a little extra energy. Children will typically replace any electrolytes they may have lost just by eating a healthful
diet. Fresh fruits and 100% fruit juices are excellent sources of electrolytes.
A great snack to bring along for after a practice or game would be a banana,
pretzels and 100% fruit juice. Salt tablets should never be given to athletes.
Salt tablets contribute to dehydration because they cause extra water to enter
the stomach and draw it away from other body tissues.
Your goal is to get the fluids in. If your child is more likely to drink enough
fluids by consuming sports drinks or juice, then consider that option. If you
are going to use fruit juice, use 100% fruit juice and dilute it with equal parts
water (e.g. 1 cup water to 1 cup juice). Children should not drink undiluted
fruit juice, fruit drinks or sodas when they are physically active. These beverages contain a lot of sugar that will draw water into the stomach resulting in
stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhea. Also, keep in mind that children should
not drink more than 8 to 12 ounces of any type of sugary drink, even 100%
fruit juice, each day. Sports drinks should contain between 15-18 grams of
carbohydrate per cup (8 oz). Be aware of the difference between “energy”
drinks and sports drinks. Energy drinks often contain caffeine, herbs, supplements, as well as a lot of sugar and calories – not a good choice for young
athletes.
When to Drink? How Much to Drink?
• 1 – 2 hours before practice/game: Drink 10-14 ounces (about 1 ½ cups)
of cool water.
• 10-15 minutes before practice/game: Drink 10 ounces (about 1 cup) of
cool water.
• During practice/game: Encourage your athlete to drink 3-4 ounces
(about ½ cup) about every 15-20 minutes even if your child does not feel
thirsty.
• After practice/game: Drink a minimum of 16 ounces (2 cups) of cool water
and provide a healthy snack.
Catch Some Z’s
Being an active kid requires a lot of energy. Make sure your athlete is
catching the right amount of Z’s. Children 3 to 5 years of age need 11 to 15
hours of sleep. While those between the ages of 5 and 12 need about 10 to
11 hours of sleep.
Did you know that too little sleep for your child:
• impairs his creativity, concentration and memory
• leaves her with less energy and slows her reaction time
• makes him more susceptible to illness and infection
• leaves her (and you) feeling cranky
A little bit of planning and preparation can go a long way in ensuring your
child is able to perform at his or her best. Planning meals, preparing healthful snacks in advance and ensuring an adequate sleep schedule are just as
important as that cool new uniform and making it to practice.

Harvest Bible Church
When you grab that mug of green beer this St. Patrick’s day consider the
man being honored this March 17. Most folks think of Patrick as a short
red-bearded man with a green hat and a four-leaf clover holding a beer like
some sort of leprechaun. Some know him as the man who drove out all the
snakes in Ireland. But these are mere legends. If the truth be told…
Patrick was a Christian missionary in Ireland in the early fifth century. He was
British, and though called a “saint,” he was never canonized by the Catholic
church. He was, however, a simple man with a passion for spreading the good
news of Jesus Christ to the people of Ireland.
Now going to Ireland to be a missionary was not easy for Patrick. Prior to
becoming such he had been captured by the Irish and taken as a prisoner
for eight years when he was only 16. He was sold as a slave to a Celtic
chieftain. While in captivity he asked God to reveal Himself and to help
him escape. He kept remembering the passage his father used to quote in
Psalm 50:15: “Call upon [God] in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and
you shall glorify Me.” Patrick did eventually escape, and upon doing so he
went home to England.
After several years at home, Patrick had a dream where he was sure God
spoke to him telling him to return to Ireland and tell the people there about
salvation in Jesus Christ. He obeyed that instruction at age 40, and to pay
for his voyage he used his family inheritance.
he used much of his money to buy his freedom, for his life was constantly
in danger. His ministry proved to be very fruitful. He converted thousands
through simple preaching. He planted churches, founded monasteries, and
ordained others to Christian ministry. He lived to be 77, and though he
continually yearned for home, he remained in Ireland as an ambassador for
Christ until his death in A.D. 460.
So, when guzzling that keg of green beer this March, remember the tradition
behind St. Patrick’s Day. It’s about a man who gave his life to serve Jesus
Christ and who died doing so!

FAIRFIELD COMMUNITY GAZETTE
Fairfield Church of Christ (Mason Road and Chappell Knoll)
“Discovering the Heart of Christ, in the Heart of Fairfield.”
A story was once told of a small girl who lived in a high-rise building in the
inner city of a large metropolis. The girl’s family was poor, but she wanted for
only one thing. Each and every afternoon, the girl would sit at her bedroom
window and look out at the most beautiful building she had ever seen. The
sun reflected off the many windows of the building like a shiny, golden piece
of jewelry. “Wow!” the girl thought, “If I could only live in that beautiful
building, then I would be happy.” One evening the girl left her bedroom
and set out to search for a closer look at the beautiful building. However,
as she neared it location, amidst all the other tall buildings that surrounded
her, she lost sight of her goal. She searched and searched for the building to
no avail. “It has to be right here,” she thought to herself. Finally, exhausted
from her search, she found a young boy about her age. She asked the boy,
“Do you know where I can find the beautiful, shiny, golden building?” The
boy replied, “Oh, yes! I know the building that you are speaking of. I look at
it every day.” The boy then pointed over her shoulder. Upon turning around,
the little girl spotted something that amazed her. It was the building in which
she lived, reflecting a beautiful golden glimmer from the sun. While the girl
had longed for what she believed that she did not have, she had failed to see
the value of what she did have. —copied
We all walk in blessings every day and yet like the little girl sometimes
don’t realize how blessed we really are. I want to personally invite you and
your family to come church this Sunday. It will bless your lives and you will
grow a deeper appreciation for your life and God who supplies all our needs.
Please take a look below at our worship times and other activities we have
and drop by some time. We would love to meet you.
On Sunday mornings; Bible Classes for babies to adults begins at 9:30am.
Each bible class is taught by loving, well prepared, Christians utilizing the
latest in educational techniques and finest bible curriculums.
Worship is at 10:30am and each service is carefully thought out and planned
by our worship ministry leaders. Every service is meant to bring glory to the
name of Jesus and help each person realize how wonderful it is when you
fall in love with Jesus as your savior.
At 5:00pm on Sunday evenings we have “Power Surge”. This is a program
that each week offers different ways to grow as a person.
Each Tuesday is a special “Ladies’ Brown Bag Lunch and Prayer.” Ladies
come together at 12 noon and spend time eating and fellowshipping and then
a time of prayer. Everyone in the community is invited to come.
Mid-week Bible studies are also offered every Wednesday at 7:30pm. This
is a great time to pause in the middle of a busy week and be re-energized by
fellowship, prayer, and study of God’s word.
We also offer free of charge in-home, personal, one-on-one Bible studies and
for those who wish to study alone, Bible correspondence lessons as well.

Spring is bursting out all over. The celebration of Lent is well underway.
Easter itself is just around the corner. Take a look at some of the happenings
at Good Shepherd.
Rise Again - Easter Cantata - Friday March 25th
Andrew was just a simple fisherman who had become a follower of the John
the Baptizer. One day he heard John call Jesus “The Lamb of God.” Curious
to learn what he meant, Andrew began to follow Jesus, who turned around
and said, “Who do you seek?” Andrew replied, “Rabbi, where are You staying?” Jesus said, “Come and see.” That was all. “Come and see,” but those
three words would change Andrew’s life forever. Come “Rise Again” with
Jesus Christ our Savior. Good Shepherd United Methodist Church choir and
orchestra will present this wonderful Easter Cantata on Good Friday March
25th, at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary.
Alpha, What is Alpha?
Everyone is invited to attend an Alpha course. People attend for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists, and if there
is any point to life; others are concerned about what happens after death.
Still others may have attended church on and off all their lives but feel they
have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. People come
from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints - but
all come with the same objective: to establish whether Jesus Christ has
any real relevance for their lives. If you would like to take part in an Alpha
course or know someone who would benefit from the course, contact Rick
Ivey@281-373-2273 or email [email protected].
Common Grounds
Common Grounds Gathering @ 5:55pm is a dynamic way to worship God
SATURDAY NIGHTS at Good Shepherd. Each week you will enjoy powerful
music, worship, praise, and fellowship in a casual atmosphere. Common
Grounds is a great place for you to either begin your journey as a disciple of
Jesus or to find the daily bread you need to continue that journey. Everyone
is welcome!
YOUTH:
Weekly programming includes senior high meeting in the Youth Room from
4-6 pm each Sunday evening and the junior high meeting immediately following from 6-8 pm in the Sanctuary. In addition to the Sunday meetings
Junior High Bible Study for sixth through eighth grades meets weekly on
Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm here at the church. Sixth through Eighth grades
are welcome to join this group at any point in the semester. Senior High Bible
Study (9th through 12th grade) meets weekly on Wednesday nights at 7pm at
the home of Bill and Lesly Haygood (call the church office for directions).
These are both open studies so join in at any time. In addition to these weekly
programs lots of great activities are set for this Spring. Our youth are attending mid-winter camps and confirmation is moving on for the 7th grade. We
are also starting to look to the summer. Summer camp and Summer mission
projects are already well into the planning stage. For information on any of
these activities Call Andrew (281-373-2273) for the details!
Women Of the Word
W.O.W is our women’s group. Women of the Word is open to all women
so feel free to invite your friends and neighbors to join us. We meet on
the first Tuesday of each month at 7 pm around the themes of mission and
personal spiritual growth. Come in the door with the Steeple, and there will
be women ready to greet you down the hall to the right. We enjoy singing,
devotional and prayer time, guest speakers, special events, and always great
snacks. Come get to know some new women in the church and find out the
many wonderful ways that we can minister to each others needs and to the
needs of our community.
Methodist Men:
Want to get involved with other men in service and fun activities? Be at
church for a pancake breakfast the first Saturday of the month at 8:00 to
learn more. This is a great meal, and you will get the information you need
on upcoming activities.
Come join GSUMC and begin the journey. Good Shepherd is located on
Cypresswood, two blocks east of Mason Rd. The church family looks forward to meeting you and your family at either the 5:55 (Saturdays) Common
Grounds, 8:31 (Sunday) Traditional Worship or the 10:59 (Sunday) Contemporary Praise service. Call 281 373-CARE (2273) or check our web site at

Trinity Vineyard Church
Who are we?
Trinity Vineyard is a new church gathering in Fairfield. We love Jesus.
We are growing through study of the bible. We find life and purpose in relationships. We drink coffee together and dress casually. We exist to pursue
God in the company of friends.
What’s on our mind this month?
We have spent the past month looking at worship as a lifestyle. When
most people think of worship they think of the 30 minutes spent singing at
their church services on Sunday mornings. While this is an important time
that we spend publicly and corporately worshiping God, Jesus has called his
followers to so much more.
On one occasion Jesus was having a conversation with a woman. We
pick up the story in John 4:20 where she challenges Jesus, “Our Fathers
worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we
must worship is in Jerusalem.” In John 4:21 Jesus declares, “Believe me,
woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this
mountain nor in Jerusalem.”
The implications of this passage are revolutionary. Jesus boldly claims
that worship is no longer tied to a specific place, location, building, or even
time. No longer do we need to make pilgrimages to sacred places in order
to meet God. Thanks to Christ’s life, death, resurrection, ascension, and the
Holy Spirit – the dwelling place of God is no longer tied to place and time.
The dwelling place of God is in the Christian believer – later in this same
passage Jesus claims that all worshippers will worship the Father in spirit
and truth. Instead of going to sacred places, followers of Christ bring sacred
place with them wherever they go. In light of this, we have been investigat-
ing how we move beyond the one day a week, public worship mindset. As
a community of friends we are pursuing worship as a lifestyle.
Who is invited?
I mperfect people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures are welcome to
attend.
When are our Gatherings? NEW SERVICE TIME!
We will begin meeting on Sunday mornings on Palm Sunday, March
20th. The morning service will begin at 10:30 am and will end at 11:45 am.
Children’s programs are provided for those 6 months – 5th grade. We will
continue to meet on Sunday evenings at 6 pm through March 13th.
Mid-week small groups are another opportunity to join us. We study the
bible together, pray for each other, and do life together. Email or call for
more info.
What is our Location?
Our services are currently at Fairfield Dance Studio at Lakeside Place of
Fairfield office building. The street address is: 15040 Fairfield Village Place
