MD PANELS Specification book Edition: April 2011 ArcelorMittal Construction International Industriestrasse 19 8112 Otelfingen / Zürich Switzerland www.arcelormittal.com/arval PRESENTATION OF THE SYSTEM The MD shell system includes: Facings made of pre-coated galvanised steel sheet, stainless steel sheet, or aluminium alloy sheet attached on notches on vertical bearing rails by means of adjustable sliding stirrups. Specific extruded aluminium alloy bearing rails (technical diagrams – fig. 4 & 6) Sliding stirrups on the MD rail. (technical diagrams - fig. 5 & 6) A set of accessories obtained by folding enables to work on specific points (eaves, cladding base, lead strips, angles, openings...). The MD shell system can be used on new façades or façades undergoing renovation work, public and private buildings, industrial facilities, shopping malls or residences. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Manufactured by folding. (technical diagrams - fig. 1 to 3) The manufacturing dimensions (height and width) can vary depending on the material used and its thickness. NF P 34-601 NF P 24-351 NOTE: The sheet thickness depends on the dimensions of the cassettes and technical criteria. In the case of specific requirements, in terms of aesthetics for example, the visible face of MD cassettes can be rendered more rigid by fixing onto the back face a system comprising a rigid core (extruded polystyrene, honey comb polypropylene or mineral wool) and 0.5 mm-thick galvanised steel sheets. FINISHES The finishes are obtained from the same sheets (same thickness, same material quality) as the cassettes, with a maximum length of 6.00 meters. Eave crown. (technical diagrams - fig. 13 to 15) Strips. (technical diagrams - fig. 10) Bay frames Outgoing cassettes (technical diagrams – fig.9) Straight angle (technical diagrams – fig.16 to 18) IMPLEMENTATION The fixings on the rails for major projects are not provided by AMC and must comply with the provisions set forth in the CSTB n° 3194 January - February 2000. The main design is that of a decorative cladding in front of a supporting wall. The supporting wall must have all adequate resistance and façade stability properties, and comply with applicable norms governing air-tightness (technical diagrams - fig. 7 & 8) In case of use with metal plates, the type XIV "wall" principles are to be followed. As far as wind resistance is concerned, the following table provides the acceptable wind loads depending on spans, dimensions, and the MD shell materials in terms of stresses due to normal wind conditions. (technical diagrams - fig. 12) For cassette widths exceeding 2040 mm, a vertical intermediate frame at centre distance is required. Table to be used to calculate the normal wind loads that can be withstood by MD SHELLS HEIGHT (meters) H WIDTH (meters) L Metal base Suction under normal wind (daN/m²) 270 daN/m² maximum Pressure under wind Normal (daN/m²) 270 daN/m² maximum 1,0 97,4 HxL 97,4 HxL 1,5 184,5 HxL 344-23,4 x H H x L² 2,0 1,5 Same 70,9 HxL Same 70,9 HxL 2,0 96,7 HxL 127,6 HxL 136,4 HxL 127,6 HxL 3,0 145,8 HxL 145,8 HxL 1,5 184,5 HxL 344-23,4 x H H x L² 2,0 Same 136,3-2,8 x L H x L² Same 305.7-95.5 x L H x L² 2,5 224-27 x L H x L² 152,8+10,2 x L H x L² 3,0 220.6-15.2 x L H x L² 124,2+55,1 x L H x L² Steel 2,0 191 HxL 191 HxL Aluminum alloy 3,0 145,8 HxL 56,8 H 1,0 97,4 HxL 97,4 HxL 1,5 184,5 HxL 178+97,7 x H H x L² Same 70,9 HxL Same 70,9 HxL 2,0 96,7 HxL 127,6 HxL 2,5 136,4 HxL 127,6 HxL 3,0 145,8 HxL 145,8 HxL Nature Thickness In mm Steel Up to 1.37 Aluminum alloy Up to 1.37 With 4 notches Steel From 1.37 to 2.04 From 2,04 to 3,00 2,0 Aluminum alloy Steel From 1.37 to 3.00 with 6 or 8 notches* 2,5 2,0 1,5 Up to 1.37 Aluminum alloy * cassettes with four notches for a maximum cassette height of 1370 mm, 6 notches for a maximum height of 2500 mm and 8 notches for a greater heights. PACKAGING AND TRANSPORT A delivery note is appended to each parcel and details the following: Customer order reference, Batch reference, Name of the customer Type of product Thickness of the facing Content of the package (amount and length) Colour reference of pre-coated sheets. The weight of the package can not exceed 2.5 tons. MD SHELLS and their accessories are to be transported in a manner that ensures their integrity (wedged parcels, carefully bunched and strapped down, closed trucks). ORGANIZATION The AMC company is a product manufacturer and does not carry out installation operations. The implementation of MD SHELLS must be performed by professional companies that are qualified to carry out these operations. The design and preliminary studies prior to the building of the façade are neither the responsibility of AMC nor of its distributors. Upon request, AMC can provide technical assistance. This guide does not aim to provide all the details of the implementation process, but to give the main technical specificities and properties of the panels. In order to provide some assistance with the façades, some design suggestions concerning particular points and finishes are appended to the guide. HANDLING, STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE The handling operations are to be carried out with the product specificities taken into account. They're to be handled vertically. They are to be stored on flat surfaces, with the parcels slightly inclined longitudinally, and care must be taken so that not more than two parcels overlap. The storage time on the construction site must be limited to the minimum necessary. One crucial precaution consists in preventing water infiltrating, by dripping or condensation, between the panels. They are to be sheltered from direct sunlight. The protection film on the visible faces of pre-coated panels must be peeled off within 15 days. The metal façades are to undergo normal maintenance operations, as per provisions set forth in the Professional Regulations Governing Metal Cladding (article 4-2-91, outdoor maintenance). Although the surface is naturally cleaned by rain water, it can also be cleaned regularly with detergent-free household cleaning products, with no solvent nor abrasive agents, followed by clear water rinsing. Maintenance operations include: removal of vegetation (for example moss) and any other foreign items that have been deposited on the facing's surface. Repairs to localised damages as soon as these are identified, such as corrosion points caused by exterior actions and damages for example. The MD shells system has its own statement of scope which was approved following a technical survey conducted by SOCOTEC, available on request from AMC. It's designed to help AMC customers use our products.œ Based on procedures and construction methods that were known at the moment of the publication, this Implementation GuideŒ should not be considered as the final version and can be reviewed and/or amended at any moment. In case of doubt or difficulties, the user should contact AMC before proceeding with the project. TECHNICAL DIAGRAMS MD Shell - Front view and profile view The X1 and X2 dimensions may vary.
