15 fun filled days in the Yorkshire Dales 15th to 30th June 2012
32nd annual Grassington Festival 2012
Grassington Festival –
A word from our festival director
Welcome to Grassington Festival
The 2012 festival has something for the everyone, from
walks, workshops and talks, including Andy Kershaw,
Sarah Raven and Frank Stone to an eclectic range of films
and culinary events. We’ve a truly amazing Art and About
programme, including the opportunity for you to have a
Picasso in your living room! And building on the legacy of
Lemn Sissay’s 2011 residency, poetry will be popping up in
some most unusual places.
Reaching out to every corner of the village and the globe,
is music hall superstar rapper Ida Barr, Cultural Flavours,
world music from Tennessee’s Earl Thomas and the soaring
trumpet jazz, hip-hop and funk of South African legend,
Hugh Masekela. Closer to home, Northumbria’s The
Unthanks fuse folk music with Yorkshire’s Brighouse and
Rastrick Brass Band.
Don’t miss the mesmerising shadow puppetry of Swamp
Juice, the incredible theatrical feat of one actor portraying
hundreds of characters in Bane, and the return of the
incredible Slung Low as they take you on a very unique
journey round Grassington. And to top it all there’s an
extraordinary experience awaiting us in Architects of Air’s
Luminarium. I can’t wait…
But none of this would happen without the astounding
support from you, our audiences, patrons, funders, sponsors
and volunteers. So a huge thank you, all of you. We look
forward to welcoming you all to Grassington in June!

Welcome

For many years Skipton Building Society has supported this
wonderful event. And we do so with great pride. Skipton has been
meeting the financial needs of generations of families in North
Yorkshire and beyond since 1853. And almost 160 years later,
we’re still here with the same values and beliefs.

As a local mutual we recognise the importance of supporting the
community. With our Head Office just a few miles up the road and
numerous branches within a 20-mile radius from here – many of
our staff and members, my family included, have enjoyed fantastic
events at Grassington Festival. Last year I had the pleasure of
attending the recording of BBC Radio Four’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A
Clue, seeing a packed marquee and hearing two hours of non-stop
roaring laughter.
The diversity of performance and engagement with the local community sum up perfectly what Grassington Festival is all about.
It left a great legacy last year, and special thanks must go to the
organisers for bringing it back with such enthusiasm and commitment. Not only has it got impressive new branding, but the line up
of events go from strength to strength. Skipton is proud to support
this event and I’m confident the 2012 festival will be even bigger
and better than before.
Good luck to all those involved,

Carnival
Procession
Following the opening ceremony,
acclaimed guitarist and singer/
songwriter Big Boy Bloater will kick off
the party in a big way with his big voice,
twang, dark blues and swamp soul. 2011
saw him as a guest on Jools Holland’s
BBC Radio 2 show, a special guest of
Imelda May at two of her big UK concerts
(Roundhouse and Somerset House), and
chosen support for Imelda’s UK tour.
After 20 years, ten studio albums, five
greatest hits compilations, thirty-four
chart singles and 15m record sales
worldwide, when time was called
on The Beautiful South in 2008, not
everyone was ready to leave the party.
Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler join
original members Damon Butcher, Gaz
Birtles and Tony Robinson to bring you
hits from the back catalogue, including
‘Perfect Ten’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Don’t
Marry Her’ and ‘A Little Time’. A fitting
celebration for our opening night.
The South are supported by Harrogate
singer-songwriter Rachel Goodwin, who
brings her unique electro-acoustic sound
to Grassington to the launch night party.

Hugh Masekela has come to be known
as a living legend in the half-century
since he first picked up a trumpet,
and luckily for us he shows no sign
of putting it down yet. Following a
highly lauded recent show at London’s
Barbican, Grassington will be one of
only a handful of UK performances this
year.. His voice has long spoken out in
his country’s struggle for civil rights,
whilst his soaring, joyful trumpet sound
brims with warmth and bristles with
elements of township jazz, hip-hop
and funk. Universally considered one
of the world’s all-time greatest horn
players, he remains, in the words of the
Independent: “a musician of phenomenal
grace and power.”
Having recently renewed their
‘National Champions of Great Britain’
title, Brighouse & Rastrick Band are
regarded by many as the best and most
consistent public subscription band in
the world. They recently collaborated
with Mercury-nominated The Unthanks
(described by The Guardian as “haunting,
original and magnificent”) as part of
BRASS2011. Grassington Festival 2012
is your opportunity to see The Unthanks
once again perform folk-led material
from their repertoire, accompanied
by the epic backdrop of the Brighouse
and Rastrick Band. A unique live
collaboration that will uplift and inspire.
“Backed by an explosive young band,
Hugh Masekela blew the roof off a
packed Barbican Hall...unforgettable.”

We are delighted that Billy Ocean will

black recording star Britain has ever
produced. Selling over 30 million
records in his lifetime, multiple Gold

Grammy Award-winning Billy Ocean

Alan
Davies
An exclusive preview of material from
Alan Davies’ forthcoming national
tour, Life is Pain. After a decade away
from the stand-up stage, one of the
UK’s best-loved comedians and actors
(star of Jonathan Creek & QI) returns
to live performance for a preview at
Grassington Festival before his national
tour. Catch his acute brand of surreal
observational story-telling while you
can! Alan may perform with notes. May
contain strong language.
Rock out on our 60s night. Performing
huge hits like ‘House of the Rising Sun’,
Animals & Friends features founder
member of The Animals, John Steel,
alongside original Animals’ Micky
Gallagher (The Blockheads, The Clash,
Paul McCartney), Danny Handley
(Spencer Davis and Ric Lee of Ten
Years After) and Peter Barton (Wayne
Fontana’s Mindbenders and Boomtown
Rats Roberts & Crowe). Leading 60s
rock band The Move’s line-up includes
guitarist Trevor Burton (Steve Gibbons
Band, Ginger Baker’s Airforce, Raymond
Froggatt) and drummer Bev Bevan
(ELO, Black Sabbath). Having toured
together in 2010, Animals & Friends
and The Move unite again for a special
performance at Grassington Festival.

Frank Stone was shot down aged 18 on
8 August 1940 on a bombing raid over
Mannheim and was taken prisoner of
war, finishing up in the North Compound
of Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany. He
lived in Hut 104 at the camp, the site
of the successful tunnel ‘Harry’, and is
able to give a first hand account of the
planning, organisation and operation
of the escape of 76 RAF prisoners. An
amazing opportunity to learn about ‘The
Great Escape’ from someone who was
there. Frank appeared on Kate Humble’s
Who do you think you are? and Ch4
documentary Digging the Great Escape,
shown Nov 2011. Talk with Q&A session.

Funky ‘neo-soul/jazz’ singer-songwriter
Sarah Brickel has a style all of her own.
Having been at the Dubai International
Jazz Festival, supporting and performing
alongside Jamie Cullum, James Blunt

Davis Band
Musical Jubilee Celebrations!
Miscellany brings you a great evening’s
entertainment to celebrate Her Majesty’s
Diamond Jubilee, with music, songs and
laughter from all corners of the United
Kingdom. Whether you like musicals,
operetta, folk music, modern songwriters
or good old fashioned humour, there
is something here for you. Bring your
champagne and flags and round off
the evening by raising the roof of the
Octagon Theatre with well known songs
from the Last Night of the Proms.
Edwina’s beautifully written songs,
charming stage presence and voice
of an angel have won her a reputation
as a true natural talent of gentle folkamericana. She has opened numerous
shows for Jools Holland and Van Morrison
and the title track of her album Pour Me
A Drink was covered by Nanci Griffith.
In addition to his regular TV slots with
Jonathan Ross and Jools Holland, UK
saxophone legend Snake has been in
great demand for performances with
the likes of Ray Charles, Lisa Stansfield,
The Eurythmics and is renowned for the
haunting sax solo on Take That’s single
“A Million Love Songs”. He brings his own
band to Burnsall for an unforgettable
evening of saxophone jazz and soul.
Michael Parkinson - ‘A very talented
young lady’
From the wilds of rural North Yorkshire
to the sophisticated suburbs of York, the
intrepid members of TRIO GITAN spend
their free time swimming in the cold
fell waters of the River Swale, playing
wild violin licks to singing dogs and
transporting double basses and acoustic
guitars through idyllic Swaledale to an
assortment of venues around the country.
Trio Gitan will take you through the
evocative sounds of Parisien cafe music,
hot blooded tangos, wild European gypsy
music, Mediterranean dance tunes,
swing classics and their own powerful
and driving compositions. All blended
together to create a vivacious, dynamic
and awe inspiring night of entertainment
of the highest calibre. This music evokes
electrifying guitar solos, fiery gypsy
violins, and songs with plenty with vocal
harmonies. A truly unique band and a
wonderful evening.

Raven
Howlin’ Matt
Mysterious, diverse, earthy and
spirited, Raven presents a unique
blend of music through their haunting
harmonies and crunchy chords. Taking
you on a fabulous journey through a
fusion of irresistible sounds: daring
choral, sizzling salsa, ethereal melodies
and rootsy folk. Playing a variety of
instruments including keyboard, penny
whistles, accordion, guitars, flute,
congas, ukulele, recorders, and djembe.
Raven create a tapestry of life, love
and laughter.
Howlin’ Mat is every inch the blues man
and one hell of a guitar player. His wife
did leave him, he did lose his house and
sleep in his car, he does have no money
and his back does hurt. So when you
hear Howlin’ Mat play you know it comes
straight from the heart as he wrings
every ounce of passion out of his old
battered Gibson to bring you his real life
tales of cheap hotels, too much alcohol,
late nights and fast food. This is no fancy
fair with the rough edges all polished
and made squeaky clean but the real
‘raw roots’ deal honed through his many
live appearances up and down the UK.

An evening
with Watch
+ support - Dave Vermond
Formerly of Chumbawamba, Waking the
Witch and Accidental Tourists, Michelle
Plum has teamed up with Nick B Hall of
The Hall Brothers to bring you exciting
acoustic roots music as Plumhall.
Together they have created a sound
that delivers powerful and emotive

they capture hearts wherever they go.
Their music draws inspiration from
many different genres, with a propensity
towards pop, folk and Americana. You
just can’t pin them down and that’s how
they like it!
An entertaining evening with popular
local new folk/rock/pop band, Watch.

The Help
(2011, 12A, 146mins)
Highly critically acclaimed, multiple
award-winning film, set in Mississippi
during the 1960’s, directed by Tate
Taylor. A young southern society girl
returns home from college determined
to become a writer, but turns her friends’
lives – and a Mississippi town – upside
down when she decides to interview
the black women who have spent their
lives taking care of prominent southern
families. It’s not too long before
everyone in the town has something
to say as they all become unwittingly
– and unwillingly – caught up in the
changing times.

value most. This documentary film

and paints an extraordinary picture of
Yorkshire and the values that shape
it. Director Simon Brewis will be at the
