under the authority of the Ohio Lottery.
Yesterday, Franklin County Common Please Judge Timothy Horton heard arguments from both the pro and antigambling sides, a preamble to his decision whether or not
to toss out the suit filed by Ohio Roundtable.
"The attorney for the Ohio Roundtable and the Ohio Attorney General have each submitted briefs to the court asking
for summary judgment," says Jerry Knappenberger, general
manager of the Ohio Harness Horsemen's Association,
which has been in the thick of lobbying for slots for many
years. "Now Judge Horton has scheduled oral arguments.
The Ohio racetrack operators have intervened as a friend of
the state in the case by filing amicus briefs."
In short, the Ohio Roundtable complaint contends that
any expansion of gaming must be first approved in a statewide ballot. There is also a charge that Ohio law requires
the proceeds of Ohio Lottery games go to education.
Many people in Ohio's horse racing industry are confident
that the Ohio Roundtable's legal challenge will ultimately be
unsuccessful, but they know the court process is certain to
be a lengthy one and could go to an appellate court and
ultimately to the Ohio Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the first priority for Ohio horsemen and tracks
is to make certain that House Bill 386 is passed by the
Ohio Senate soon.
"The legislature is on its two-week Easter recess now and
won't be back in session until April 17," says
Knappenberger. "This legislation contains language spelling
out the rules for operation of the gaming and racing operations."

Scioto Downs in Columbus, is wasting no time in launching its slots facility. Construction on a massive new structure located adjacent to the track in part of the parking lot
began this winter. Mountaineer plans to welcome customers
to play the slots at Scioto within two months.
The racing season at Scioto begins on May 10. Racing
will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights with post
time at 6:30 p.m.
No other track in Ohio has started construction of its slots
facility and some tracks may decide to hold off until the
Ohio Roundtable's legal challenge is resolved.
Thus far in 2012, the racing scene in Ohio has been
dramatically altered and there are almost certain to be other
big changes in the coming months.

Chester Won’t Be Chester
The racetrack currently known as Harrah’s Chester is
about to undergo a name change.
In a statement released earlier this week, management
at “Chester” announce that the track and casino will be
renamed Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack.
Harrah’s may have been seizing on an opportunity created
when Philadelphia Park dropped the “Philadelphia” and
was renamed Parx Racing.
“We can confirm that we are working on changing the
Harrah’s name as part of new developments in entertainment and dining which will better position the casino as a

senior vice president and general manager told the Delaware County Times. “W e will have an official announcement
in the coming weeks.”
According to the newspaper, radio advertisements for an
upcoming Lynyrd Skynyrd concert refer to the venue as
Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack, noting it was
formerly Harrah’s Chester.
Pantaleano Broke Ribs in Freehold Spill
Driver Jim Pantaleano, involved in a spill Saturday at
Freehold, has a dislocated collar bone and broken ribs.
According to his wife, Christy, Pantaleano will be “out a
while.” Pantaleano will know more after a follow-up appointment with his doctor and a CAT scan. The driver has been
dividing time between Freehold and Yonkers this year.
The spill also involved Eric Abatiello and Ivan Llopez.
Abatiello drove late the same day. Llopez report that he was
merely “banged up” in the spill and has returned to action.
Northfield and Hard Rock Team Up On Casino
(press release)
Hard Rock International, owner of one of the world’s most
iconic brands, announced today that it has entered into a
joint venture and related agreements to acquire equity in,
and to develop and operate a Hard Rock Gaming and
Entertainment Facility at Northfield Park racetrack in Northeast Ohio. This proposed project is subject to the satisfaction of certain conditions, including
a successful resolution of the pending litigation in Ohio regarding video
lottery terminals.
The proposed $275 million Hard
Rock project would include a Hard
Rock-branded gaming center, premium steakhouse, Hard Rock Cafe,
ongoing lineup of live music and iconic music memorabilia
from Hard Rock’s unmatched collection, as well as a center
bar, buffet and conference and meeting space. The development is expected to generate approximately 1,000 permanent jobs, more than 1,000 construction jobs and countless jobs associated with local suppliers and vendors.
The Hard Rock Gaming and Entertainment Facility would
be developed as part of the current Northfield Park Racetrack located in Northfield, Ohio. Northfield Park is one of
the nation’s premier harness racetracks, and the joint venture with Hard Rock will enable the racetrack to provide
additional enhancements to its current programming that
features more than 200 live racing events each year.
“W e are thrilled to be working with Milstein Entertainment
and the Northfield Park team on this project,” said Jim
Allen, Chairman of Hard Rock International. “We look forward to bringing the renowned Hard Rock brand to Northfield Park, as the Hard Rock Gaming and Entertainment
Facility would be a state-of-the-art venue, providing
world-class entertainment experiences that are unique to
the region to complement the local community and its sur-

“Being from Northeast Ohio, I take great pride in the
region and the partners we choose to bring here,” said
Brock Milstein, Chairman and CEO, Northfield Park and
Milstein Entertainment. “Given the impressive history of the
Hard Rock brand and its reputation for developing fun and
unique experiences around the world, we couldn’t have
chosen a better global brand to develop and operate this
venue.”

Racing Season Back on Track at Saratoga Casino and Raceway (press release)
The New York State Racing and W agering Board, in
conjunction with the Department of Agriculture and Markets,
has cleared Saratoga Harness for re-opening after a recent
outbreak of strangles. The racing season will resume on
W ednesday, April 11.
"Thanks to quick
action on the part
of Saratoga Raceway officials, private veterinarians,
horse owners,
trainers and others, the strangles
outbreak prompting the raceway’s recent closure is under control," said Dr.
David C. Smith, Director of the Division of Animal Industry
at NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. "Heightened biosecurity measures are currently in place to protect
horse health on the raceway, and will remain in place as
racing resumes."
Upon reopening of the backstretch on Monday, all horses
racing at Saratoga Harness Track will be required to provide verification of health. A current health certificate, a
PCR test resulting negative for strangles taken after March
1, 2012, or proof of vaccination for strangles since January
1, 2012 will be accepted forms of documentation.
"As soon as the first incidents of strangles became apparent, Racing and W agering Board staff took swift action to
protect the health of the horses at the track. Through the
diligent work of our partners at the Department of Agriculture and Markets and cooperation of management at
Saratoga Raceway and the Saratoga Harness
Horsepersons Association, we have contained this outbreak
and look forward to live racing commencing on April 11,"
said Racing and W agering Board Chairman John D.
Sabini."
Pending approval, the current racing calendar will be
supplemented by adding race cards every Thursday night
from May 17th until September 6th to make up for the 10
canceled racing dates. Post time will remain at 7:05 p.m. for
each of these additional race cards.
HRU: You’re just 22 but off to a terrific start in 2012 with a
winning percentage in the neighborhood of 27 percent. Is
this beyond your expectations?
CJ: It’s definitely beyond my expectations. I think it’s
beyond anyone’s expectations. I have a great team behind
me. My owners, I cannot give them enough credit. They
put things in my hands and they’re always willing to give
me a shot with good horses. Right now we have some
good, very consistent horses in the barn. It’s a better start
than I ever could have anticipated. But the credit goes out
to everybody.
HRU: Your father, Colin Johnson, what kind of teacher is
he?
CJ: My dad is a great trainer, a winner of over 3,000 races
lifetime. He has really given me the opportunity to be a
good trainer. He has guided me, but at the same time he
lets me do my own thing. He’s kind of taken a step back
and let me grow as a trainer on my own.
HRU: Did you always want to be a trainer or was there a
time when you wanted to work in the “real world?”
CJ: I like to keep my options open, so I tried to keep my
school grades up and I attended college. But this is something that runs in my family and something I always enjoyed doing. This was always my plan. I like training
horses and I grew up doing it.
HRU: These are uncertain times for Ontario racing? Are
you concerned about your future?
CJ: Obviously, we’re going through a few things here in
Ontario. It’s never crossed my mind if I am going to be
doing this or not in the future because I know I will be. But
I have to admit I have some concerns. How is the game
going to look in 10 years? But I never worry about having
to do something else.

108 Eligible for 87 th Hambletonian
(press release)
Dan Patch freshman trotting colt Possess The Will tops a
list of 108 trotting colts eligible to the 87th Hambletonian,
the richest and most prestigious event in harness racing.
Possess The Will, from the first crop of 2007 Hambletonian
winner Donato Hanover, is owned by Jules Siegel’s Fashion
Farm and trained by Jim Campbell. The colt annexed divisional honors with seven wins in 12 starts and earnings of
$550,789.
The $1.7 million Hambletonian and the filly companion
stakes, the $850,000 Hambletonian Oaks, will be raced on
Saturday afternoon, Aug. 4, at the New Meadowlands
Racetrack, East Rutherford, New Jersey. Eliminations, if
necessary, will be raced Saturday, July 28.
“He’s coming back very well and I plan to qualify him
about the second or third week in May,” said Campbell.
“Everything has gone well with him so far and if it continues
that way I think we would aim for the Beal Memorial [at
Pocono Downs] as his first stake race. He was big horse to
begin with but he’s grown and filled out even more this year
– he’s really a big boy.”
Campbell and the Fashion Farms ownership also campaigned 1995 Hambletonian winner Tagliabue and 2009
Hambletonian Oaks winner Broadway Schooner. Divisional
champions have won three of the last five Hambletonians
and Campbell hopes Possess The W ill continues that trend.
“There’s no pressure, it’s just an honor, really to have a
colt that raced like him last year,” continued Campbell. “A
top contender at two returning as a three-year-old is not
always easy to do. But he has always been a good natured,
good acting horse and a real pleasure to be around.”
Uncle Peter, the two-year-old Breeders Crown winner
over Possess The W ill, is also among the eligibles. Both
colts were ranked behind a pair of fillies -- W in Missy B and
Check Me Out -- in the new Hoof Beats/Trackmaster Predictive Ratings, a computer-generated ranking system
based on speed ratings, track variant and post position.
The Hambletonian Society, which has owned and serviced the race since its inception in 1926, received 213 total
payments for the 2012 Hambletonian and Oaks events,
hosted by the Meadowlands Racetrack since 1981. There
are no supplemental entries permitted in the Hambletonian
and Oaks, nor are participants allowed to race on Lasix or
Butazolidin. They are the only events in North American
horse racing that prohibit the use of any race day medication, currently a subject of intense discussion throughout
the industry.
The Hambletonian trail commences Saturday, May 5, with
the Dexter Cup at Freehold Raceway.
The Hambletonian is the second leg of trotting's Triple
Crown. The first, the Yonkers Trot, takes place Saturday,
July 7 at Yonkers Raceway. The third leg, the Kentucky
Futurity, is scheduled to be raced Sunday, Oct. 7 in
Lexington. The last trotter to win the Triple Crown was
Glidemaster in 2006.

Race 6, Fillies & Mares N/W $16,500 L5
FOUR STARZ ROE looks like an entirely different mare
since the Fraley claim four back, and if that recent Yonkers form holds will be a major threat in here. Claimed for
$20K on March 1, this one has reeled off two straight
blowout wins against upper level conditioned foes; Pierce
will be sending. ROCK N SOUL finds what ordinarily
would be a soft spot, but hasn’t come back as strong so
far this year as Burke would probably have liked. Hard to
completely toss. ENDURING DELIGHT makes her third
start back off the layoff for Coyne. Never got involved in
her last from the outside at Chester, but Miller up now and
is good enough to go with these. RAMONA DISOMMA
may need a race, but 7-year-old Pacific Fella mare has
had success here before at levels higher than this.
Race 7, N/W $18,000 L4
HE’S SPOOKY hinted at serious ability in his earlier past
couple seasons and has looked pretty decent thus far
since moving to the Daley barn. He came up a little short
in that most recent at Chester, but all prior Meadowlands
races this year were fast – two of which were against the
USTA’s horse of the month – rates a strong chance.
BOOKEM upset two back as the longest shot in a short
field and seemed to still be going well when he made the
break last week. MYSTERY PHOTO makes his second
start back off the layoff for Andy/Julie, raced against Arch
Madness in his return. SUGAR QUEEN GABBY has
impressed this year, turning into a legitimate upper level
conditioned mare for Bilach. W ill be charging late again.
ICE MACHINE is an obvious short priced contender; fits.
I’d be surprised if CAMERON CHIP reaches from the
outside, considering the three week break.
Race 8, Fillies & Mares N/W $6,500 L5
In a field where it’s difficult to be entirely confident on
anyone, SHAYNA BABY did wire a similar looking field
last week in 1:52:4 and one would think similar tactics will
be coming. She generally does fire when raced at levels
like this, deserves to be favored but isn’t unbeatable. I’m
surprised Pierce opted off SHAKY HANOVER for a $10K
claimer from a lesser known trainer. Still has a shot with
Miller. MCFLIRTY was claimed last out for trainer Enrico
Robinson; classy mare’s history here is well known. Let’s

see if new barn can turn her back around. FANCY PANTS
SANDY deserves a try on the big track after climbing the
ladder at Freehold. Took her mark at this track a few years
ago for whatever that may be worth.
Race 9, N/W $10,500 L5
I guess W ESTSIDE LINDY almost has to be considered a
“lock” in this spot, right? Winless on the year in six starts,
but there’s no question this 5-year-old is in the best form of
his career. Exits a great try against Temple Of Doom; and
prior that was hard used before finally giving in at the wire
to In Focus in 1:53. Prior to that was good in the Horse &
Groom; his race to win or lose. I’m surprised there was a
claim last week on ZUEREST for $30K off top connections;
wasn’t too long ago this horse was a lower level claimer.
ARMBRO BARRISTER has always been more of a smaller
track horse but is still going well enough at age 11 for
Schnittker. Longshot that can pick up a piece late. MASTER BEGONIA has speed and the obvious post edge on all
rivals; couldn’t come through as a short price in either of the
last couple times he raced here.

Woodbine Recap
By Greg Gangle
The second leg of the Blossom Series continued on
Thursday evening at W oodbine and it was trainer George
Teague, Jr. and driver Jody Jamieson pairing up to capture both $30,000 divisions with Yagonnakissmeornot and
Arm In Arm.
Yagonnakissmeornot went gate-to-wire in the first division, stopping the timer in 1:53.3.
Starting from post nine, Jamieson wasted no time from
the start as he guided the daughter of The Panderosa to
the front well before the first quarter in :27.3. The six-time
winner then laid down panels of :57.4 and 1:26.1, before
scooting away to a three and a half length victory. Stage It
Right (Rick Zeron) came from off-the-pace to finish second
with Albanian Era (Sylvain Filion) third.
Teague, Jr. trains and co-owns Yagonnakissmeornot
who increased her lifetime earnings to $89,496 for
co-owners Fannin Racing LLC and Ted Gewertz. She paid
$5.10 for the win.
Teague, Jr. and Jamieson would pair up again as Arm In
Arm got to the wire first in a new lifetime best of 1:53.3 in
the second division.
The daughter of American Ideal sat in the pocket behind
stiff fractions of :26.3, :54.4 and 1:23.3, before angling to
the outside in deep stretch to score an open-length victory.
Air Guitar Hanover (Billy Davis, Jr.), who was the
tempo-setter, stayed for second, over Machleen (Chris
Christoforou).
The bay increased her bankroll to $28,427 for Teague,
Jr., who co owns with Fannin Racing LLC and Ted
Gewertz. She paid $21.50 for the win.
Cold Certified, driven by Jason Brewer, kicked off the
Tie Silk Series in fine form as he captured the fastest of
three $20,000 divisions on Thursday evening at W oodbine.
The lightly-raced son of Kadabra made his 2012
pari-mutuel debut a winning on as he stopped the timer in
a lifetime best clocking of 1:57.2 for owner/trainer Gary
Lance.
The two-time winner took over command past the quar-

ter in :28 then marched past the half in :58.2 and
three-quarters in 1:27.3 before brushing home to win by two
and a quarter lengths. White Russian (James MacDonald)
finished second with Fore Seasons (Sylvain Filion) completing the triactor. Cold Certified increased his bankroll to
$20,625 as he paid $6.80 for the win.
In the second division, Midfield Magic and driver Rick
Zeron scored a comfortable, three and three-quarter length
victory in 1:57. Zeron put Midfield Magic on the front past
the opening station in :28.2 and never looked back through
fractions of :58.1 and 1:27.3, before dashing away from his
rivals. Cimeronken (Jody Jamieson) finished second with O
U Sexy Guy (Jason Brewer) grabbing third.
Midfield Magic, a son of Kadabra, scored his third career
victory in his 2012 debut for trainer Frank O’Reilly. John
Fielding, Franco Cianci, Isidoro Russo and Vincenzo
Monticciolo own the bay who has career earnings of
$37,360. He paid $4.50 for the win.
In the final division, Jack
Moiseyev guided Back To
Peace to victory lane in
1:58.4, a new lifetime best.
The son of Angus Hall
cleared to the lead past the
opening panel in :28.3 and
laid down fractions of :59.4
and 1:29.4, before brushing

victory over Boca Boca
(Scott Zeron). Touchdown Toss (Randy W aples) finished
third.
Frank Colville trains the two-time winner for Antonio
Chiaravalle and High Stakes Inc. Back To Peace increased
his lifetime earnings to $35,130 as he paid $6.90 to win.
The Tie Silk Series is for sophomore trotting colts and
geldings who are non-winners of $30,000 in 2011. The
second $30,000 leg continues on April 16 with the $50,000
final on April 26.
