Venus and Serena are two sisters that are not only professional athletes but continue to mount firsts in their sport. The first siblings to be ranked #1 and #2 in the world. The first siblings since 1984 to compete against each other in a Grand Slam Final (not to mention four consecutive times). Record-breaking endorsement contracts that have made them the highest compensated female athletes in the world – and more. All of this by the ages of 24 and 25. The youngest of five sisters, Venus and Serena were born just 15 months apart on June 17, 1980 and September 26, 1981, respectively. Venus was born in Linwood, California and Serena was born in Saginaw, Michigan. Venus and Serena spent most of their childhood in Compton, California before moving to Florida at the ages of 10 and nine. Growing up in Compton, they showed a natural aptitude for tennis, and under the tutelage of their parents, Richard and Oracene, they began their winning ways at a very young age. Venus remained undefeated in junior matches until turning pro and Serena, as a junior, was undefeated against all opponents except for her sister. Their parents, however, did not allow their budding professional careers to interfere with their education; insisting that they concentrate on their studies as well as their game. Venus and Serena continued to attend school and graduated from Driftwood Academy in 1988 and 1989, respectively. By 2000, Venus began stringing together major titles winning 2000 Wimbledon (singles and doubles with Serena), 2000 Olympic gold medals (singles and doubles with Serena) and the 2000 US Open. In 2001 Venus went on to successfully defend both her Wimbledon and US Open titles. Serena won her first Grand Slam – the 1999 US Open – at the age of 17. Not to be outdone, in 2002 thru 2003 Serena strung together a series of Grand Slam titles on her own winning the French Open, Wimbledon, US and Australian Open titles earning what the media named the “Serena Slam.” In each of those finals, Serena played none other than her sister, Venus. They have continued to further their education by studying fashion design at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and have pursued their interests as businesswomen in the fashion industry. Venus has designed an apparel line for Wilson’s Leather bearing her name (The Venus Collection). She has contributed to the designs of her on-court Reebok apparel and has also launched an interior design firm, VStarr Interiors. Serena has launched her own successful line of women’s clothing – Aneres – which has been featured in a variety of celebrity and fashion events around the world. Venus and Serena recognize their blessings and are committed to giving back to the communities that have fostered their growth. They have partnered with a variety of organizations including the Ronald McDonald House Charities and their mother’s charity – The OWL Foundation – on a variety of high profile charitable fundraising activities. Upon turning pro, Venus and Serena established the Venus and Serena Williams Tutorial Tennis Academy at the park in Compton where they began playing tennis. They continue to make planned impromptu visits to the academy on a regular basis. Sisters, rivals, partners and friends; living legends and role models for people of all ages; Venus and Serena are rewriting the history books in a tale of two sisters; with many more chapters to come. LOOKING COURT F led`Fiercely determined and wielding an impressive physical prowess, Venus has rose to the number one position in the world and has won numerous championships, including singles titles at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon and doubles titles at the Australian and French Opens. Additionally, Venus won gold in both singles and doubles at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Along the way, she gained a comprehensive education in the business side of the sport as well. It’s a mindset that has served her well as she has reached adulthood and began looking beyond tennis. Now, at 25, she has parlayed her fine tuned business acumen with her healthy competitive spirit to excel in several ventures. In addition to her worldwide tennis competitions, the young entrepreneur is a uniquely creative designer who has created her own signature line of apparel at Wilson’s Leather and has collaborated with Reebok and Diane Von Furstenberg to design her tennis clothing. Moreover, she has become a certified decorator and owner of V Starr Interiors, a successful interior design firm that stresses elegance and style. The transformation from tennis’ force majeur to savvy businesswoman didn’t happen overnight. It had been brewing all along, instilled in her early years by her parents and embraced by the bright youngster. True to her bold spirit, she simply enrolled in fashion design school while off-tour, and she is currently earning a degree in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. While working toward her Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design, she opened V Starr Interiors in 2002, based in Jupiter, Fl. where she oversees a talented staff. In 2000, Reebok signed Venus to the largest endorsement deal ever awarded to a woman athlete. Venus worked with Reebok on the collaboration with famed designer Von Fustenberg for her line of tennis clothing that was youthful, but decidedly non-trendy. Even while balancing dual careers tennis is still an important aspect of Venus’ life. This year she took home the Wimbledon title and her 13 total career grand slam titles. Along with her design and tennis careers Venus still finds time to pursue other interests: reading, studying languages, learning piano, guitar and bass during her rare time off. TENNIS’ shining S TA R Her name is synonymous with style, class, beauty and courage. At 24, Serena has not only made history in the sport of tennis, but she has made an indelible imprint in the world of sports, globally. She has overcome insurmountable odds to win four Grand Slam titles in a row, and is a 7 time grand slam singles champion and an 11-time doubles champion, including an Olympic gold in 2000. As a young lady at the age of 17 she won the 1999 U.S Open singles and doubles titles. In 2002 and 2003, she won the French, Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open which the press called “The Serena Slam”. Moreover, she played her sister in all four finals. She most recently won the 2005 Australian Open increasing her Grand Slam Singles titles to seven. Serena has helped to change the face of tennis forever, and in doing so, like Tiger Woods in golf, has provided positive motivation for children to pursue their dreams. She, along with Venus, have a long list of firsts in their careers, including the first time in tennis history two siblings have been ranked numbers 1 and 2 in the world. Outside the sport of tennis, fashion and acting are her main passions. Included among fashion trendsetters in the October 21, 2002 issue of People Magazine, Serena has opened her own clothing line, Aneres. She has also made guest appearances on the hit ABC TV shows ER , My Wife and Kids and StreetTime on Showtime. She is currently reading additional script for upcoming projects. Serena strongly believes that she has a responsibility to give back to the community because of the blessings and opportunities she has received. She visits schools, conducts tennis clinics and mentors at risk youth and visits numerous hospitals. She has been selected by Ebony Magazine as one of the “57 Most Intriguing African Americans,” and chosen by People Magazine as one of the 25 Most Intriguing People in the World.” A&E Network named Serena as one of the Top-10 “People of the Year” and she was featured as one Bob Costas’ “Personalities of the Year”.
