Shir Tikvah Congregation 13-Day Spirituality Adventure in Israel Led by Rabbi Michael Adam Latz, Michael Simon, Noa & Liat June 18 – 30, 2017 PROGRAM DETAILS Overnight: Flight DAY TWO MONDAY, JUNE 19, 2017 ARRIVAL Arrive at Ben Gurion International Airport. Welcome by our representative and assistance with arrival formalities. Recite the traditional “shehechiyanu” blessing upon entering Israel at the old Redding building, at the end of the Tel Aviv port overlooking the beach Lunch on own on Rothschild Street. Against The Odds - Building A State: Visit Independence Hall, where David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the State of Israel on May 14th, 1948. Check into the hotel. Welcome dinner at a restaurant in Jaffa. Overnight: Tel Aviv DAY THREE TUESDAY, JUNE 20, 2017 TEL AVIV: THE FIRST HEBREW CITY Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the Old City of Jaffa, ascend from the old port through the renovated alleyways to the Jaffa Overlook for an introduction to Tel Aviv at the place where it all began and walk through the famous Jaffa Flea Market - “Shuk Hapishpishim”. Lunch on own en route. Return to Tel Aviv and walk through the museum at the new Rabin Center, dedicated to the history of society and democracy in Israel. The life of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin serves as a time-thread connecting the faces and events of modern Israeli history. Dinner on own at the renovated Old Port of Tel Aviv, with its wonderful restaurants, cafés and shops, right on the water's edge; OR at the Tachana, Jaffa's Old Railway Station, renovated and restored as a great pedestrian complex, with restaurants, shops and open spaces for people-watching. Visit the Nalaga'at Theater in Jaffa to view a production ofLo Al Halechem Levado - Not By Bread Alone OR Luna Park, performed by a deaf/blind theater group. Overnight: Tel Aviv DAY FOUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2017 AGENTS OF CHANGE Breakfast at the hotel Check out of the hotel. Strangers in a Strange Land: Explore the reality of the foreign worker in Tel Aviv as you walk through the streets of South Tel Aviv (possibly the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism's (IMPJ) pre-Army academy (mechina) in Jaffa. Living as a Minority in the Jewish State: Meet with Professor Dalia Fadila, President of the Technology and Science College of Baqa al Garbia, for a tour of the campus and conversation on the reality of Arabs living in Israel, success and challenge and what it means to be the first Arab woman to be nominated president of an institution of higher education in Israel Lunch on own. Living as a Minority in the Jewish State: dialogue with Amna (using Noam's connections ) Drive north to the Galilee and walk to the Arbel Cliffs for a beautiful overlook of the mountains and the Sea of Galilee, followed by a hike down the cliff. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Kibbutz Hotel, Sea of Galilee DAY FIVE THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 2017 SERENITY, NATURE AND SECURITY IN THE GOLAN Breakfast at the hotel. Explore Tsfat, a center of Jewish mysticism for hundreds of years and a contemporary artists' colony, including: Guided visits to the Ari, Caro or Abuhav Synagogues with their great stories and mystical messages. A stroll through the quaint Artists' Colony and shop in the galleries and crafts shops. Meet with artist, Sheva Chaya in her studio, for an interactive window into the world of Kabala, glass blowing and questions of identity and Judaism; OR LaDa'at Families in Tsfat - Find your way through the alley ways of Tsfat, uncovering the hidden words, secret codes and mystical messages on a family scavenger hunt through the Old City of the ancient Kabbalists. Lunch on own en route. The panoramic views from Mt. Bental (overlooking the abandoned Syrian town of Kuneitra) give sharp insights into Israel's security situation on the Golan Heights, and the enormous challenges it faced in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Take a nature walk along the Banias Stream at the base of the Golan Heights. Return to the hotel. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Kibbutz Hotel, Sea of Galilee DAY SIX FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2017 THE ZIONIST DREAMERS Breakfast at the hotel. Check out of the hotel and drive west. Tikkun Olam hands-on experience with Leket, a volunteer organization that provides food for the needy by collecting excess produce from farms and food distribution companies. Visit Nahalal in the Jezreel Valley for an in-depth look at communal living then and now in Israel's first moshav, farming village, and have coffee at home of Atzilit and Ofer Aviram and a visit to the secret weapons hideaway from the War of Independence. Drive along the Trans-Israel Highway for a close-up view of the ‘Security Barrier' along the seam zone between Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Lunch on own en route (perhaps at Ofer Falafel in Modi'in). Stop at the Haas Promenade for an overlook of the Old and New Cities of Jerusalem and to recite the traditional “shehechiyanu” blessing. Check into the hotel. Kabbalat Shabbat services with local Jerusalemites at the Old Train Station Plaza, a central neighbourhood hub. Festive Shabbat dinner at the hotel. Optional night walk to the Western Wall. Overnight: Jerusalem DAY SEVEN SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2017 SHABBAT IN JERUSALEM Breakfast at the hotel. Shabbat services at Shira Hadasha, a feminist-Orthodox congregation situated on Emek Refaim Street in the German Colony. Lunch on own. Day at leisure to relax and explore on own, OR those who wish will be able to join on a walking tour to the Old City to visit the Christian Quarter, including the Via Dolorosa, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and other Christian sites including enjoying the view from the Austrian Hospice. Return to the hotel. All: Ben Kodesh Lechol: Havdallah overlooking the Old City from Yemin Moshe. Free time in the Mamilla pedestrian arcade, a very contemporary shopping area with a whiff of the past, located outside the Jaffa Gate of the Old City; dinner on own. The Night Spectacular at the Tower of David Museum: The walls of the Citadel serve as a stage for a night-time show a celebration of sight and sound - that depicts the story of Jerusalem. Overnight: Jerusalem DAY EIGHT SUNDAY, JUNE 25, 2017 THE LAYERS OF JERUSALEM Breakfast at the hotel. Proceed to the Old City and begin with a walking tour of the Jewish Quarter with visits to archaeological treasures and other highlights, among them: The Cardo, the main street of Jerusalem in the 6th century King Hezekiah's First Temple-period “Broad Wall” Hurva Square, the central square of the Jewish Quarter Lunch on own in the Jewish Quarter. Stop at the Kotel (Western Wall) and experience the special atmosphere of this holy site, followed by a walk through the Western Wall Tunnel, the underground continuation of the Western Wall alongside the Temple Mount. Tour of the excavations at the City of David, the very core of ancient Jerusalem. View the Gihon Spring and wade through the 2,700-year-old water tunnel of King Hezekiah (optional dry exit), OR join the Temple Mount Sifting Operation. Sift through rubble that originated in the Second Temple period; learn about the findings from archaeologists and expert guides at the site. Return to the hotel Interfaith Dialogue for Peace: Dialogue with ICCI students. Visit the new Palestinian city of Rawabi, and meet with Dinner on own. Bashar Al-Masri, CEO of Massar International, and visionary behind Rawabi. Lunch on own en route. Drive to the Dead Sea for a short float and then ascend by cable-car to Masada, Herod's mountain palace and the site of the Jewish Zealots' last stand against the Roman Legionnaires; discuss Masada's role as a symbol of Jewish defence and its current significance in modern Israel. Descend via the Roman Ramp and continue to Mitzpeh Ramon. Check into the hotel. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Jerusalem DAY NINE MONDAY, JUNE 26, 2017 MEMORY NEAR AND FAR Breakfast at the hotel. Adults (with local guide) Visit the Yad Vashem complex, the Jewish National Memorial to the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, including: The Avenue of the Righteous The new Historical Museum The Children's Memorial Youth and children: Visit the Tish Biblical Zoo with Noam. Drive out of Jerusalem and take part at a woodcraft workshop at the Kakado Gallery and meet owner and artist, Reut Shachar, including lunch. Return to Jerusalem and dinner on own. Overnight: Jerusalem DAY TEN TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 2017 BORDERS AND BRIDGES Breakfast at the hotel. Check out of the hotel. Overnight: Mitzpeh Ramon DAY ELEVEN WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 2017 THE ARAVA IN ALL ITS GLORY Breakfast at the hotel. Drive through the massive natural Ramon Crater to the Arava and visit the Reform Kibbutz Lotan and explore creative Jewish approaches to community life and the environment. Lunch at the kibbutz. Return to Mitzpeh Ramon and afternoon to enjoy hotel facilities OR those who wish will continue to the Chan Hashayarot camp just north of the city for a chance to ride on a “desert ship” (camel) and experience Bedouin hospitality. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Mitzpeh Ramon DAY TWELVE THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2017 FROM DESERT TO AIRPORT Breakfast at the hotel. Morning on own at the hotel to relax. Check out and lunch on own. Drive north and visit the Ayalon Institute near Rehovot for an eye-opening tour of a clandestine munitions factory used during the British Mandate. Enter Tel Aviv and free time for last minute shopping. Festive farewell dinner. Transfer to Ben Gurion International Airport and check in for the departure flight to the USA.
