Director’s Message
The summer season is synonymous with sun and fun and “school is out”. Certainly our young
people should look forward to having fun in the summer months, but we take a slightly
different approach here at community education. Summer is an excellent opportunity for
enjoying the sun, having fun and learning.
Each summer, we look at ways of enhancing learning opportunities for our students through
our summer day camps, specialty camps and academic support programs. Learning doesn’t
stop in the summer months and our students have plenty of choices.
This is also a time we look to maintain and strengthen our relationships with our community partners who bring
additional resources to our programs. The West Bloomfield Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is an
important component in all of our day camps. Library personnel convert one of the classrooms at camp
headquarters at the high school into a library where campers are able to check out books. Library staff also visits
each week and conduct activities with the campers.
Mr. Tom DeGrand, 5th Grade teacher at Scotch Elementary, returns to head up our day camps again this summer
as Lead Teacher. Mr. DeGrand is an innovator in the classroom who loves teaching and loves kids. Summer Sun &
Fun, Camp Superstar! and Get REAL Camp are all under his leadership. Scholarships for our day camps will again be
available thanks to a generous grant from the PNC Bank Foundation.
Summer Scholars Academic Readiness will help students in grades 2-5 sharpen their skills in math, reading,
writing and social studies. Summer Math and Reading Enrichment for those entering 7th and 8th grades will
focus on strengthening basic math and reading skills along with Pre-Algebra work. Imagination Station is a one
week camp designed to challenge creative minds with projects and activities in math, reading and science.
Greater Retention & Achievement through Summer Practice (GRASP) is a home-based program which helps
students maintain or improve their math and reading skills. Bridge 6 is designed to create a smooth transition to
middle school and Bridge 9 will provide the same for those entering high school. Both classes focus on building
work skills and study habits, enhancing self-esteem and strengthening positive peer relationships. New this year
for aspiring doctors, we have Little Medical School, where campers experience medicine first hand and leave with
their own lab coat and stethoscope. Many of our camps are designed to support the district’s STEAM initiative
namely, Video Game Design, Vehicle Engineering and Wacky Wheels.
Finally, a variety of sports offerings led by West Bloomfield High School coaches are on the schedule including Pat
Watson’s basketball and baseball camps, Dana Gray’s volleyball camp and Ron Bellamy’s football camp.
School may be “out” for the summer, but learning is always “in”.

Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the
mind -- simply put, the hour long practice will
focus on building stronger minds and bodies.
Concentration, balance and persistence may be
tough to harness every day... but imagine trying
to use those skills while holding and moving
between tricky and challenging poses! Students
will attempt to keep a steady mind, despite falling
and being physically tested. Life is full of challenges, but practicing
how to be graceful and accepting is an invaluable lifelong skill! Fun
exercise for both the mind and body is waiting!! Music and Mats
provided; bring water, a snack, and writing materials.

Most people are concerned about money, but few truly understand
how money works. The educational system has done an amazing job
empowering the workforce with the knowledge and skills needed
to earn a living and provide for a family. The challenge, however, is
once out of the parents house and graduate, students are typically
inundated with debt from college and don’t have a good launching
point for success. That’s why 30 years after college people are still
struggling with the same issues as the day they graduated. This
workshop is designed to empower twenty-somethings and get
them off to a Smart Start. Learn to set up a solid foundation to develop
a powerful personal economy. The first week will deal with creating a
Solid Foundation, week two focuses on Developing Your Personal
Economy and the last week will give Advanced Strategies.
