I trust that you will find it informative and useful as a way of keeping up to date with our fantastic array of activities and enrichment opportunities. We are very proud of the successes and achievements of all our students and I hope you enjoy reading about them. I am very pleased to report that we are beginning to see outstanding academic progress with significant numbers of students. I am especially pleased that Year 11 students are taking full advantage of the range of intervention sessions, including a very full programme of residential study weekends, run by a number of academic departments. You will also notice in our newsletter the groundbreaking innovation of our VEGA initiative where Key Stage 4 students are able to access lessons from their own teachers through their home computer or mobile device. Please encourage your son or daughter to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Academic achievements are important but they are only part of what we care about at EGA. Many of you will have attended our International Evening last term where we celebrated the rich diversity of world cultures, many represented at the academy. It was fantastic to see so many of our students performing so well at this event. Similarly, I was very proud of EGA footballers who participated in the Junior Nkwelle memorial match at Walworth Academy. All students conducted themselves with dignity in what, I feel, is a fitting memorial to Junior. This will now become an annual event for both EGA and Walworth. I am grateful, as I am sure you are, to the hard working staff at EGA who are tireless in their provision of enrichment opportunities for students. This Newsletter is able to capture only some select highlights, but you will see that students have attended educational theatre and cinema trips as well as participating in dramatic and musical performances of their own at the academy. In addition, EGA staff are creating opportunities for students to raise their aspirations by visiting world-class university colleges such as the King’s College trip last term. Debating and Public Speaking, always a strength at EGA, continue to thrive with students winning debates in National competitions, some now hosted at EGA. Finally, I would like to thank all parents and carers for your support since September, without which we would not be able to provide the rich and broad variety of curriculum and extra curricular experiences for all of our students. Please continue to support your child’s progress by talking to them regularly about their progress at school and by checking your son or daughter’s planner each evening. Mr Hanson Welcome To New Staff We would like to extend a warm welcome to staff who started with us this term: Laura Robinson Graham Gayle Novellette Bennett June Bragahi Head of Performing Arts (Music and Drama) Head of Art Maths Teacher EAL and MFL teacher They are more than happy to talk to parents and carers about any concerns or questions they might have regarding their child. Should you wish to do so please contact Main Reception. VEGA Comes to EGA In July 2011, Steve Jobs (founder of Apple Computers) was dying of cancer. Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft) came to see him and their conversation turned to education. The conversation between the two greatest technology visionaries of our time turned to education and how the children of the future would learn and Gates outlined a vision of what schools of the future would be like, “with students watching video lessons on their own then using class time for discussion and problem solving.” In December 2012, EGA was very proud to launch VEGA (Virtual Evelyn Grace Academy), a new and revolutionary approach to online learning which will allow students to learn in a time and place which suits them best, even on their mobile phones. The first wave of VEGA involves the creation and sharing of video lessons over the academy’s Youtube channel: www.youtube.com/arkvega. Teachers are creating short, high quality videos focusing on exactly the topics students need to know to support them in their exam success and, over time, the students themselves will also be creating these videos. They can then access these videos quickly and easily on an computer, on their mobile phone, on their Playstation, Xbox or Nintendo games console or through any other device which allows access to Youtube (such as iPod touch). Year 11 students revising for their GCSE English exam in January have already been able to take advantage of the videos created by both teachers and students and, the night before the GCSE English exam, our students watched over 50 hours of online lessons. By the time exams come around in the spring, we hope that every Year 11 student will be able to revise every aspect of their GCSEs in this way. By subscribing to the channel, students will also receive an email when any new videos are uploaded which means they will be the first to know when new learning resources become available. Video learning is just the beginning for VEGA however. A number of other projects which are currently under development are designed to ensure that students (and parents) are able to quickly and easily find out what their homework tasks are online without any need to remember login details or passwords. Not only this, but they will be able to communicate directly with their teachers outside of school hours if they have questions or queries about their learning and they will be able to interact with one another and share their work with each other in a secure, moderated and user friendly environment. Most importantly, they will be able to do all of this in a time and place which suits them best. Why not check it out for yourselves by visiting www.youtube.com/arkvega and having a look at some of the learning materials already available to our students? We settled into our rooms had a bite to eat and then – with only a little grumbling – sat down to a past paper. After a good night’s (or half a night’s) sleep everyone was up and feeling refreshed the next day and ready to see what mark they had achieved after a burst of marking from the teachers and it was clear that some people had a lot of work to do. The focus that the Year 11 boys showed was absolutely amazing. They got their heads down, concentrated and made the most of the opportunity to work in groups of 6 to 8 with teachers giving them individual support and with a few more exam papers, some presentations and quizzes they made astonishing progress. Special mention should be made for Ibrahim Cisse who improved from a U grade to a C and to Daniel Copeland Kelly who went from a D grade to an A as well as for Rushaun and Vicente who both achieved A* grades. But it wasn’t all about exam papers. The boys got a chance to go rock climbing up a pretty challenging course – clinging on to a 10m vertical wall and the after dinner football championship refereed by Mr Bailey was hotly contested. On Saturday evening Mr Bailey ordered Pizza Hut for everyone as a thank you for everyone’s hard work (and even managed to wangle two extra pizzas and some chicken wings) and we feasted whilst watching Match of the Day. Year 11 were fantastic throughout the whole weekend and really took the most of a great opportunity to improve their grades. Our budding ‘Matheletes’ competed at Walworth Academy in a range of brainteasing mathematical challenges against other schools in the ARK network. Particular congratulations to teams on winning Bronze medals. Geographers developing literacy through collaboration Students who participated in Year 8: Fardowsa Mohamed Rochanne Bailey-Simmonds Gideon Orena Andrea Merino-Frosi Students who participated in Year 10: Ashwinder Singh Khurana Barin Bamgbose Abdi Abdirahman Aydan Jackson Literacy Focus One area of our academy that really improved last term was our focus on Literacy. We recognise that being proficient in the use of language is one of the most important skills we can give our pupils and as such, have launched a series of innovative initiatives. The first is called “The Writing’s On The Wall”, which is when teachers put up new vocabulary posters every week throughout the corridors. So, if you visit the academy, keep a sharp eye out for some new words to learn! The second, is a focus on Speaking and Listening skills in lessons, for which last term we set ourselves a challenge of learning only through talk for one whole day. It was an enlightening and successful experience for all involved; and certainly a challenge to be taken on again in the future. Finally, the school has put together a team of Literacy Champions, with a member of staff from each department, who are working together to push the academy even further forward in improving Literacy skills amongst all our pupils. EGA Students Aspire To Top Universities A group of students attended the highly prestigious Into University programme at the elite King’s College University last term. Year 8 students enthused about the opportunities they had to work with University students on a variety of activities. ‘The best thing about this programme was the communication with other students because it gave me a good perspective of what university is like’ said an aspiring university student from EGA. Mr Smith from the Science department spoke of our students’ ‘exemplary behaviour and attitude in representing the academy’. University Hopefuls from Evelyn Grace Academy EGA Library Developing Student Literacy The EGA Library continues ukhostto provide fantastic ed14.renlearn.co.uk/25530 support for all students. 56/homeconnect Tyrone, Renyka and Kai This term the library have had a successful reading partners programme. Two mornings a week Year Nine students have been supporting Year Eight students to improve their confidence when reading. Students read together, take quizzes and then write their opinions in an exercise book. The students have really enjoyed the programme so far and it has forged new friendships. Next year we will be running a programme to support our year seven students as well. Key stage three Students can now log into Accelerated Reader’s Home Connect to see how many books they have read and to take quizzes based on their average score. Using your normal Accelerated Reader username and password, students log in on: https:// Students can set it up so that parents receive an email every time students take a quiz. If you need any help, please contact Ms.Dutton. The library now has a new website. Here students and parents can find links to revision and author websites, see student work and Y8 Trip To See Private Peaceful Earlier this term Year 8 pupils went on a specially organised trip to the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton. The purpose of the trip was to watch a screening of the film Private Peaceful. This was the film version of a novel, studied by all Year 8 students, that tells the story of young Tommo Peaceful and his brother Charlie as they enlist as British troops during World War I. The trip was an excellent way of encouraging discussion of the novel and the students took this opportunity with pride. All teaching staff, and staff at the Ritzy cinema, commented on the good conduct of the pupils and all the pupils had a wonderful time. More Debating Success Public Speaking at EGA is going from strength to strength with the launch of Model United Nations debating in addition to continuing the weekly Debate Mate programme. We have sent students to both the ARK MUN Conference and also the Mulberry Global Classrooms MUN Conference at the prestigious International Maritime Organisation. Two Year 11 students, Vicente Conte-Couto and Keanna Williams, showed their debating skill and passion by going through the first round of The Mace, beating Dunraven and Greycoat 6th Formers, and coming a close second to Alleyns 6th Formers. We also entered 4 debating teams into the Cambridge Schools Competition, with Toby Wells and Muna Nur winning their debate on This House Would Introduce state school quotas for universities. Two students, Shaquille Scot-Davis and Muna Nur, have become Debate Mate ambassadors; they are now involved in leading and running weekly meetings, training new debaters and organising assemblies and show debates. find out about any library news. Students who see their work on the website can visit Ms. Dutton for a prize: http:// missedutton.wix.com/ Spirit of London Awards Miss Johnson, Miss Anderson, Miss Dolphy & Miss Morgan took 11 students to the Spirit of London Awards, held on the 10th December at the O2 in Greenwich. The Spirit of London Awards is a ceremony that awards exceptional young people for their talent across London and the UK, in the Arts, Media, Sport and Education. It featured artists such as Labrinth, Angel, McFly and Diversity. The girls were excited to attend the awards show and had a great time. Year 7 Residential Year 10 Trip To The Young Vic Year 10 students were recently inspired by a trip to see Hattie Naylor’s celebrated play Going Dark. Over the past term, the English Department have developed links with the Young Vic theatre. We have been able to take advantage of their free tickets for schools scheme and have organised trips to see three productions so far. These have been Checkov’s ‘Three Sisters’, ‘Blackta’ and ‘Going Dark’. Students have really enjoyed these enrichment opportunities and it is vitally important that they are able to expand their knowledge and horizons by experiencing live theatre first hand. Ms Manlay, Head of English, said, ‘We are always looking for ways to enhance the curriculum for students. ‘We have a number of trips planned for the new year and students should make sure that they take advantage of these opportunities.’ During the autumn term Year 7 and many Year 9 students were taken on a residential to Margaret McMillian House which is a centre run by Widehorizons Trust, a charity dedicated to providing inspirational adventure and outdoor learning experiences to young people. Siham Mohamed said, ‘The play made me appreciate how precious sight is. I thought the story and the staging were amazing and I would pay to see it again.’ Army Hero Inspires Students To Never Give Up Army veteran, Phil Packer visited the academy last term to speak to Key Stage 3 students. Phil Packer, who was invited to the academy by Rachel from Kids Company, urged students not to allow anything to stand in the way of their ambitions. ‘No matter what troubles he has faced in life, he still has the perseverance to do all these amazing things’ said Hugo Williams in Year 7. Phil Packer who suffered a spinal-cord injury while serving as a major in the British Army, was told he might never walk again. However, Phil defied expectations by rowing across the English Channel and then completed the London Marathon on crutches in 14 days. Students inspired by Phil Packer to join Rachel on Brit 2012 walk ‘It was such a good experience and I am forever thankful to Evelyn Grace Academy for giving me the opportunity and once in a life-time experience of meeting and hearing from the man himself, Phil Packer. I will never forget that. Thanks EGA! ‘ (Scott Greenfield 9R) The aim of the weekend was to help new Year 7 students to integrate into their new school life, get to know their classmates and Year Group, and also for Year 9s to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills that will help them through their school career and beyond. The students had an amazing time, had lots of fun, learnt lots and represented EGA very well. The activities included things such as making fire using flint, cooking bread on an open fire, abseiling and rock climbing to name a few. These activities also helped to develop the students skills along with increasing self confidence and motivation. Widehorizons centres have their activities independently inspected and hold the national Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge for educational provision. EGA Has Talent! EGA students rounded off the autumn term with a rousing end of term concert that packed out the main hall. Audiences cheered on a wide range of acts with top performances from the school choir, the amazing drummers of EGA, the Latin Dance Trio as well as a wide range of individual performances. Dajarne performed a fantastic rendition of amazing grace as well as a prayer which he wrote himself wishing for a successful concert. Perhaps the highlight of the show was the performance by Manal Elmarzak and Grace Irikefe-Collins singing Ave Maria by Beyonce. EGA American Football Students at Evelyn Grace Academy have been learning the exciting game of American Football for the past twelve months. A select number of students have been training weekly with South London Renegades Coach Steve Verrell on Wednesdays after school. This has resulted in a full kitted match on Wednesday 5th December against Acton High School. Basketball Scores 3 Pointer Training continues on Wednesday after school. The senior boys basketball team finished third overall in the Lambeth League. Since this impressive feat they have played numerous fixtures with our local Ark schools, Walworth and Globe Academy. A new kit was launched this year, which became so popular with the boys that they now have their own personalised kits. Training for the Basketball Teams is on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after school and at lunch time every day. Year 10 Boys Make Junior Nkwelle Football Tribute Young Sports Designers EGA Rugby players are showing creative flair both on and off the pitch. In October Darren Keenan and Kevin Coelho went with Mr Riley to Twickenham to design a new EGA Rugby kit, courtesy of England Rugby and Canterbury Sports Wear. The kit is now being made and will be with us in the new year. Year 10 boys showed incredible dignity as well as fantastic footballing skills in a memorial game held at Walworth Academy. The game, played in December, is the first in what will be an annual match in memory of Walworth student Junior Nkwelle who was tragically killed in Brixton at the end of September. hugged one another at the sound of the final whistle. The game was concluded with a convincing EGA win, scorers Samuel Clayton and Jeremy Kessie: final score EGA 2 Walworth 0. The match, between EGA Year 10 and Walworth Year 11 students began with a minute’s silence. The New EGA Rugby kit designed by our students The game was good spirited and students Mr Hanson presents the Junior Nkwelle Memorial Shield to Mohamed Ouedraogo Girls’ Sport Netball Year 7, 8, 9 and 11 have all been working really hard on a Wednesday after school resulting in Year 7 and 8s becoming the 2nd best team in Lambeth after a tournament at St Martin’s. Year 11s also took part in the London Academies Cup resulting in them picking up 2nd place. Well done all those girls who took part— let’s carry on training hard next term on Tuesday, 3.30 – 4.30! Dance Football The dance company has grown dramatically this year with new additions from all year groups. They took part in the Step into Battles and came 3rd with Brandon Walker gaining the best newcomer award. Girls were very enthusiastic this term – with the Crystal Palace coach coming in to help out and give the girls an opportunity to play for a team outside of school. This has been a very successful term with lots of games being played, including a football tournament where we came 2nd out of 8, closely missing out on 1st place after an amazing performance. The girls have been entered into a football 11 a-side league this year. First game against Elmgreen School (4 -2 L) which was a good learning curve— hopefully a bigger push on full sized games and positioning will mean we are ready for games in January. Last match of the term was EGA v Globe Academy Y710 at home. The girls all put in 100% effort and came out on top winning comfortably 5-0! Our football team goes from strength to strength! Well done girls! We are having a big push on participation for girls football and with the interest from Fulham FC coaches we are sure to have another positive term. Boys’ Football Year 8 boys have had a challenging start to the season but showed great improvement in their second game. Special mention to Kieran Power-Daley who has been excellent in both games, not only showing great ability but also determination and spirit, a great example to other players in the side. Year 9 boys reached the English Schools FA Cup 3rd Round and are progressing well. Joel Stennett recently captained the team to an 8-0 victory over Year 8 and Joshua Bohui and Malachi Simpson continue to impress. Year 10 boys are through to the 3rd round of the South London Cup and are on a 3 game unbeaten run. Captained by Mohamed Ouedraogo the team have a strong spirit and always eat together on match days. Year 11 boys experienced success in the Lambeth 6-a-side competition held at EGA, securing an excellent and deserved 2nd place. The team’s increasing commitment to training and appreciation of each other’s skills and qualities has been a pleasure to witness
