WELCOME: BLUES FEST 2014 — It’s Getting to Be A “Family Affair”
On behalf of the Mayor and Council of the City of Hagerstown, and the Blues Fest’s volunteer organizing committee, thanks for attending
Blues Fest 2014, marking 19 great years of annual fellowship celebrating one of America’s greatest musical forms — the blues!
BLUES BOUTIQUE
As we close in on next year’s twin-decade, 20-year milestone for our homegrown community event, we are struck by the wonderful “Blues
Fest Family” we have created over the intervening years. Whether you are a returning annual event sponsor, a new addition to the ranks of
our family of sponsors, an event volunteer or just a faithful attendee, thank you so much for helping us make Blues Fest a self-sustaining
success story!! We’ve shared this annual rite together so many times, and formed and renewed so many event-based friendships over
the years that we really have become like family to each other. Coincidentally, the “family” theme is also strongly echoed by the many
performing families represented in our 2014 lineup — from the siblings comprising Homemade Jamz Blues Band, to the extended family of
brothers and nephews who make up The Lee Boys. In our parallel Blues Fest tradition of “old friends and new,” we are happy to welcome
back legendary performers who have previously joined our Blues Fest journey, as well as to make new friendships by presenting some of
the most exciting new performers on the national blues scene. Just like a family reunion, we also must sadly remember some important
family members who have left us since we last convened. (See “Tributes” section.)
Check out what’s new at
the 2014 Blues Boutique!
Gear up for this year’s
event with the latest
designs in Blues Fest hats,
T-shirts and merchandise!
Blues-based music is the figurative soul of American music — a broad musical form that has significantly influenced almost every genre
of American popular music. Because blues’ musical rainbow is so vibrantly multihued, it, in turn, makes a “family” out of the diverse
backgrounds and walks of life represented by its devotees. As you enjoy your Blues Fest weekend, and especially as you participate in
the extended hours of our Saturday “Downtown House Party,” please uphold our proud 19-year tradition as a spirited gathering of friendly
patrons responsibly enjoying themselves. Take special care and courtesy for the safety and enjoyment of those of your blues family
“brothers” and “sisters” around you. In your excitement in the music and moment, don’t forget to “know when to say when.”
As our entertainers lift your spirits and as your family enjoys our Sunday “KIDS JAM TOO!” children’s area, please remember that
Blues Fest is but one of many unique and enjoyable activities in the greater Hagerstown area. Stop by the Visitor Welcome Center,
conveniently located near our Friday and Saturday festival site, to learn more about tourism in Hagerstown and Washington County —
there’s a lot here to enjoy!

RONNIE EARL & THE BROADCASTERS
WINNER: 2014 Blues Music Award “Best Instrumentalist – Guitar”
¥
10
The 2014 Blues Music Awards validated what we have been saying for years: Ronnie Earl is a true blues legend and one
of the finest instrumental blues guitarists, whose singular style straddles the lines of blues and jazz, while adding tasteful
hints of soul and rock. In our opinion, Mr. Earl’s live recording “Ronnie Earl: Blues Guitar Virtuoso Live In Europe” —
capturing one of his 1993 shows in Germany — is one of the finest all-instrumental live blues albums ever produced, and
deserves a spot in every serious blues fan’s collection. More recently, in 2005 Ronnie released “The Duke Meets The Earl,”
where he and Duke Robillard alternately duel and pair in a recording that will make any serious blues guitar fan swoon with
delight. A former associate professor of guitar at Boston’s famed Berklee School of Music, Ronnie Earl is also a past twotime winner as “Best Blues Guitarist.” Ronnie floored us with a standout set as stage closer for the Blues Fest stage of our
2012 Saturday “Downtown House Party.” Fans have been clamoring for his return ever since, and we are happy to oblige.
Born Ronald Horvath in Queens, N.Y., on March 10, 1953, Ronnie didn’t even start playing guitar until age 20. Unlike an
early attempt at piano, guitar seemed to come to Ronnie instinctively, and he became fascinated with blues after attending
a Muddy Waters concert in Boston where Mr. Earl was attending college. Soon after graduating from Boston University,
Ronnie made the guitar his lifework, and landed a job in the house band of the Speakeasy Club in Cambridge, Mass.,
where he changed his last name to the bluesier-sounding “Earl” in tribute to Earl Hooker, one of his favorite influences. By
1979, Ronnie’s guitar chops were advanced enough for him to be invited to replace founding guitarist Duke Robillard in
Roomful of Blues, the retro swinging jump-blues revival band whose sound demanded a jazz sensibility as well as ample
blues feeling. Ronnie spent the next eight years with Roomful of Blues, as its national profile grew steadily larger. After a
few early Broadcasters fits and starts in the early ’80s as a side project to Roomful, Mr. Earl made the leap to solo artist
and bandleader in his own right as he left Roomful and debuted a new set of Broadcasters in 1988 featuring vocalist Darrell
Nulisch, ex-Muddy Waters Band harmonica player Jerry Portnoy, bassist Steve Gomes, and drummer Per Hanson. But
the band’s quick worldwide success and hectic touring pace would exact a price. By the early ‘90s, Ronnie rethought his
approach, and, with a new version of the Broadcasters — including B3 organist Bruce Katz — began his all-instrumental
direction. Shortly thereafter, he released several albums in quick succession, with the first-mentioned “Live In Europe”
recording garnering critical acclaim and winning Pulse magazine’s year-end poll as Best Blues Album.
Proudly celebrating over 19 years of sobriety, and having also successfully battled major depression, Ronnie Earl
dedicates his music now to proclaiming the healing and loving power of blues music. We truly feel blessed that Ronnie’s
own fond memories of his 2012 Blues Fest appearance led him to accept our invitation to return as our 2014 Featured
Headliner and Saturday final stage closer! We trust that all true blues fans will loudly give their warmest, most loving and
enthusiastic Blues Fest welcome to Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters as they return to help us celebrate 19 years of the
healing power of blues in Hagerstown. We’re sure that his 2014 Blues Fest set will be one to remember!!
19TH ANNUAL WESTERN MARYLAND BLUES FEST
ERIC STECKEL
IAN SIEGAL & BAND
True blues fans understand the deep debt our beloved
national music owes to post-WWII English musicians with the
now-familiar surnames of Mayall, Clapton, Jagger, Richards,
Beck and Page. They not only immersed themselves in the
form, but, at a time when interest in blues music was at least
waning, perhaps can be said to have actually saved blues
from extinction. They resurrected and reinvigorated it to make
it part of mainstream rock ’n’ roll culture, which they exported
back to the States and the larger world. Often they had blues
pioneers open their shows, thus introducing young fans to
the sources of their inspiration. That debt is reason enough
to explain why we at Blues Fest have featured British blues
players in recent years. It doesn’t hurt that that these British
players just happen to be quite talented. Often, they possess
an uncanny, innate understanding for “our” music! One such
performer is seven-time British Blues Award winner Ian Siegal
— who also has been twice nominated for U.S. Blues Music
Awards — on one of the last stops of his maiden tour of the
United States. Ian has taken the English and European blues
worlds by storm ever since his two successive tours as the
opening act of ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings
in 2003 and 2004 and later as a duo with Big Bill Morganfield,
the son of famed bluesman Muddy Waters! His universally
praised 2005 album, “Meat & Potatoes,” is extraordinary for
the depth of its songwriting, but also for how white-Brit Ian
uncannily channels the vocal spirit of great African-American
bluesman Howlin’ Wolf. Simply amazing! If you don’t have
that CD in your blues collection, it’s definitely a “must add!”
In 2011, Ian recorded “The Skinny,” which was produced by
Grammy nominee Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi
Allstars, and featured a supporting band whose surnames
(Burnside, Kimbrough and Bland) read like a “who’s who” of
authentic U.S. hill country blues. In 2012, another blues dream
team was formed of Luther Dickinson, Cody Dickinson and
Alvin Youngblood Hart to back Ian on his critically hailed late2012 release, “Candy Store Kid.” Reaching No. 1 on iTunes
UK Blues charts and the subject of serious award nominations
on both sides of the blues-loving Atlantic, the disc displayed
Ian’s kinsman-like feel for traditional Delta sounds, and his
artistic virtuosity, whether on resophonic guitar, electric guitar
or simply as a vocalist. We are absolutely certain that you will
be thankful that you were in Hagerstown on Saturday, May 31,
2014, to witness the deep blues talent of Ian Siegal & Band,
as they demonstrate that authentic, traditional-sounding new
roots blues are alive and well on “the other side of the pond.”
No true blues fan should miss this extremely rare Blues Fest
treat!!
How many 23-year-old blues guitarists do you know
who are already seasoned performers, with a history of
having toured both nationally and internationally for more
than 14 years? Meet Eric Steckel, who in 2002, at the age
of 11, became the youngest guitarist ever to be invited
onstage to perform with English blues legend John Mayall
and his legendary band, The Bluesbreakers. Eric’s career
has skyrocketed ever since that fateful appearance that set
the tongues of blues aficionados to wagging. Capable of
displaying guitar techniques and sounds recalling legends
Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa while
also presenting his humble, friendly and just-plain-winsome
personality, we think Eric Steckel could possibly be one
of the next superstars of the blues. The Western Maryland
Blues Fest got its first glimpse of Eric at our 2013 Saturday
“Downtown House Party” when he thrilled us with an exciting
mid-afternoon set. We were so completely charmed by one of the best young additions to the national blues scene that we
just had to hear more from this young blues entertainer gifted beyond his years. Seeing the reaction of our fans to the power
of Eric’s performance, and perceiving the special budding talent on display, we made the unusual step of “adopting” Eric into
our Blues Fest family by asking him to return to us for both our mid-winter 2014 Cabin Fever Blues Bash, and also as the
featured headliner for Blues Fest 2014’s Friday “Lotta Blues Show”! He didn’t disappoint us in March, and we are confident
that he has even more excitement in store. Recently returned from yet another of his frequent European mini-tours (where he
is already firmly established as a highly sought blues headliner), and having also recently released exciting new sounds on his
“California Sessions” EP, the highly anticipated follow-up recording to his critically acclaimed 2012 “Dismantle The Sun” CD,
Eric will cap off our first-ever “all national acts” Friday with yet another evening of exciting music from a young prodigy who has
already matured into a confident blues master demonstrating an innate blues knowledge far surpassing his age. Don’t miss this
electrifying coda to one of the most exciting Friday components ever assembled for Blues Fest!
THE LEE BOYS
Truly one of America’s finest
African-American “sacred steel”
ensembles, The Lee Boys are a
family group consisting of three
brothers — Alvin Lee (guitar),
Derrick Lee (vocals), Keith Lee
(vocals) along with their three
nephews, Roosevelt Collier
(pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy
Jr. (seven-string bass) and Earl
Walker (drums). Each member of
the group began making music at
the ages of 7 and 8 in the House
of God church they attended in
Perrine, Fla. Born and raised in
Miami, each of The Lee Boys grew up in the church where accomplished steel player the Rev. Robert E. Lee, father or
grandfather of the boys, was pastor. “Sacred steel” music is an inspired, unique form of Gospel music with a harddriving, blues-based beat. While firmly Gospel-rooted, sacred steel infuses musical notions of rhythm and blues, jazz,
rock, funk, hip-hop and country, as well as musical ideas from other nations. Influenced by the Hawaiian steel guitar
fad of the 1930s, brothers Willie and Troman Eason brought the electric lap steel guitar into the worship services of the
House of God church in Jacksonville, Fla., where its Pentecostal congregation embraced the instrument’s soulful sound.
Over time it became the hallmark of church services. Pedal steel guitar was later added to the mix and soon became
the principal lead instrument. Totally unknown to the wider world until the mid-1990s, “sacred steel” burst into the full
light of its glory after folklorist Robert Stone first coined the phrase to describe the wonderful “new” musical form he
documented after attending House of God services. When The Lee Boys bring their joyous spiritual sound to the stage,
audiences instantly recognize that this is not “sitting and listening” music: dancing, shouting out and having fun are
considered essential parts of their tradition. So let the spirit move you to get up and dance with joy to the sacred steel
sounds of The Lee Boys at our first-ever “all national act” Friday “Lotta Blues Show”!!

CAROLYN WONDERLAND
INDIGENOUS
A lot has changed in the musical life of Indigenous guitarist and front-man, Mato Nanji
(Ma-TOE NON-gee), since he and his Native American family band first came to Blues
Fest in 2004. And our ears can’t wait to catch up! A member of the Nakota Nation, and
born and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, Mato was heavily
influenced by the blues rock music of his father — the late Greg Zephier. Mato was also
influenced by his father’s vast collection of blues records by legendary artists such as
Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King. By his late teens, Mato, his brother Pte
(bass), sister Wanbi (drums) and cousin Horse (percussion)
had formed the band Indigenous, which soon exploded with
the 1988 release of their award-winning debut album, “Things
We Do.” The title track’s video won the American Indian Film
Festival Award and was shown at the prestigious Sundance
Film Festival. Indigenous’ early music also caught the
attention of blues icon B.B. King, who invited the young family
band to play on his annual tour in 1999. Eventually though,
after four more CDs together, the siblings decided to disband
and pursue their own musical paths. Mato carried on with the
Indigenous name. “Playing with my family for 10 years was a
lot of fun, but it was time to grow and keep moving forward.”
Sometime around 2009, Mato made an immediate emotional
connection with guitarist/singer Derek Post, and soon both he
and Post band mate Charles Sander (drums/keys) became the
current version of Indigenous, that is, coincidentally, enjoying
a healthy re-birth. Indigenous’ latest release “Vanishing
Americans” (2013) represents a tribute to the national touring
band of the same name that Mato’s late father formed in the 1960s.
In addition to his Indigenous “day job,” Mato Nanji has also been a member of the
annual Experience Hendrix Tour Band since 2002. Continuously honing his guitar “chops”
by playing alongside original Jimi Hendrix band members Billy Cox and the late Mitch
Mitchell, the roster of the annual Hendrix tribute tour includes some of today’s blues
greats: Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble), Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne
Shepherd, Eric Johnson and Robert Randolph. And Mato more than holds his own
alongside such musical luminaries. Following the 2012 Experience Hendrix Tour, Mato
collaborated with two of his fellow EHT band mates, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and
Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), to deliver the hard-driving, blues-infused
“3 Skulls and the Truth.” We are thrilled to once again present the incredible guitar skills
of Mato Nanji and Indigenous!

19TH ANNUAL WESTERN MARYLAND BLUES FEST
What is it about Texas and blues? The two just go
together — Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker,
Johnny Winter, Janis Joplin and Stevie Ray
Vaughan, to name but a few. In fact if you distilled
the vocal chops of Janis with the natural playing
intensity of Johnny Winter into one solitary
performer currently hailing from The Lone Star
State, you’d probably come up with... Carolyn
Wonderland! Perhaps mostly due to her advanced
vocal skills, by her mid-teens Carolyn had already
become the toast of her Houston hometown. While
she initially began playing her mother’s vintage Martin
guitar, she’d soon mastered trumpet, accordion, piano,
mandolin, and lap steel as well! We think you get the idea: Music
is definitely in this woman’s DNA. After migrating to Austin, Texas, in the ’80s and absorbing
first-hand the musical influences of blues by none other than Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double
Trouble and his brother Jimmie Vaughan’s The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Carolyn briefly returned
to Houston in the ’90s, only to again feel Austin’s blues siren-call. A critic for the Boston
Herald described Carolyn as “Janis Joplin, a slice of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and a big load of
soulful individuality... that’s Wonderland, a seething-hot Texas singer-guitarist.” We couldn’t
agree more, and we are sure that you will like this blessed late addition to our Blues Fest 2014
lineup! Carolyn Wonderland’s soulful blues will add just the right touch of Texas to our firstever “all national act” Friday “Lotta Blues Show.”
DOUG MACLEOD
DOUBLE WINNER: 2014 Blues Music Awards –
“Acoustic Artist of the Year” and “Acoustic Album of the Year”
We are incredibly pleased to present acoustic
blues singer-songwriter Doug Macleod as the
headliner of our 2014 Sunday Family Blues
Picnic in Hagerstown City Park. Winner of The
2013 Blues Blast Music Award for Male Artist
of the Year and perennial Blues Music Award
nominee — including an incredible THREE
nominations in 2014 alone for Acoustic Album of
the Year, Acoustic Artist of the Year, Song of the
Year (“The Entitled Few”) — Mr. MacLeod’s live
performances preserve the tradition of the blues
as a storytelling medium. Most often playing a
National Delphi guitar (accompanied by his left
foot), using his relentless right hand to pound out
an insistent, churning beat to complement his
intricate bottleneck and finger-style technique,
Doug tells anecdotes and stories between pieces
that add a remarkable sense of fun and intimacy
to his shows. Having learned stage technique as a sideman to blues greats George
“Harmonica” Smith, Big Joe Turner, Lowell Fulson and Big Mama Thornton, among others,
storytelling lies at the heart of a Doug MacLeod performance, as he brings characters,
both faceless and legendary, to strikingly real life. While the tales initially came from Doug’s
early performances, when he felt that he did not have enough music to fill a show, those
days are long in the past, as his own compositions (he plays none other) now number
more than 300! Doug MacLeod’s music has also been covered by many other notable
artists, including Albert King (“Your Bread Ain’t Done” on the Grammy Award-nominated
album “I’m in a Phone Booth”), Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker, Coco Montoya and Pee
Wee Crayton, to name but a few. A recipient of the Golden Note Award for Best Original
Recording (for his album “You Can’t Take My Blues”), Doug also impressed many blues
fans as a long-time contributor to Blues Revue magazine with his humorous and engaging
“Doug’s Back Porch” columns. As well as writing and performing, he also teaches guitar
and has released his own instructional DVD, and has hosted blues radio shows “Blues
Highway” and “Nothin’ But the Blues” (1999 to 2004).
SAMANTHA FISH
Her home state of Missouri is sometimes called the “Show-Me State,” and if by her
set’s end at Blues Fest 2014 Samantha Fish hasn’t shown you that she has the true
blues “goods” — both vocally and on guitar — we’ll be sorely surprised. This Kansas
City, Mo., native has been taking the blues world by storm ever since the 2012 release
of her Mike Zito-produced release “Runaway” that ended up garnering her a 2012 Blues
Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut.” Hailed as a thrilling opening statement by an
important new female
voice of the blues,
and earning a string of
rave reviews and radio
airplay, “Runaway” may
have actually proved
to be a mere prelude
to things in store from
Samantha, at least based
on initial reaction to last
September’s release of
her “Black Wind Howlin’”
sophomore followup release. With Zito
again holding producer
honors, the new CD was
recorded at Dockside
Studios in Maurice, La.,
and features Samantha’s
blazing guitar and vocals,
backed by Zito plus his
fellow Royal Southern
Brotherhood members,
Yonrico Scott on drums/percussion and Charlie Wooton on bass. Special guests include
Paul Thorn on vocals, Johnny Sansone on harmonica and Bo Thomas on fiddle. Critics
are indeed once again pleased, and we have no doubt that you will hear the influences of
Samantha’s teenage years spent soaking up the blues sounds of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tab
Benoit and other national acts that came through Kansas City’s Knuckleheads Saloon in
the 1980s, which, in turn led her back to “the old guys like Son House and Skip James.”
Past and future now have merged in Samantha’s mature technique that has been thrilling
fans at festivals both far and wide, and she recently was awarded a 2013 Blues411 “Jimi”
Award in recognition of her guitar prowess. Be sure to give Samantha Fish, one of the
best new female faces in the blues, your attention and appreciation early Saturday during
her first appearance at Blues Fest.
HOMEMADE JAMZ’ BLUES BAND
Homemade Jamz’ Blues Band (HJBB) might just be the youngest national touring blues
band with the most established performing history. A trio of siblings, whose guitarists play
cool-looking and great-sounding homemade guitars fashioned from car mufflers, HJBB are
Ryan Perry (22, guitar), Kyle Perry (19, bass) and sister Taya Perry (14, drums). Hailing from
Tupelo, Miss. — the birthplace of “The King” Elvis Presley — the group owes its origins to
the day Ryan spied Dad (Renaud Perry) unpacking his Stratocaster guitar in Baumholder,
Germany, where he was stationed with U.S. forces. It was love at first sight for a 7-year-old
Ryan, and within a week he was picking out notes and even playing along to TV commercials.
Inspired by sounds from his Dad’s B.B. and Albert King records, by the age of 8 Ryan was
gigging at Tupelo house parties as a solo act, when brother Kyle, after seeing a video of Willie
Dixon, also caught the blues bug and settled into learning bass. The brothers had their famous
first gig at Clarksdale’s Ground Zero club (co-owned by actor Morgan Freeman) accompanied
by a house drummer. Soon sister Taya — who was only 7 herself by this time — wanted in
on the act. When youthful male egos gave initial resistance to the idea of a younger sister on
drums, we can all be thankful that gentle, but firm, parental persuasion soon led to the creation
of the incredible family ensemble we know today. And truly HJBB’s rise has been meteoric
ever since then, including stops on “The Today Show,” and later placing second (out of 157
acts) in the 2007 International Blues Challenge. HJBB are now touring in support of their fourth
CD, “Mississippi Hill Country,” a self-released tribute to the rural style of blues of the same
name. Written with lyrical help from Dad, even a quick listen shows that HJBB has maybe
found its true lodestar — a style of blues that seems to fit the band like a hand in a glove. We
are confident that Ryan, Kyle and Taya Perry — already hard at work writing album number
five — will show you the intense power of a loving family blues musical connection.
SCOTT AINSLIE
Traditional acoustic blues guitarist Scott Ainslie’s performance in Hagerstown City Park at Blues Fest 2013 was such a
special treat that we had to bring him down to City Center for an encore in 2014! So we’ll begin our first-ever “all national
acts” Friday “Lotta Blues Show” with sounds from blues music’s own cradle — an examination of the genre’s origins by a
masterful performer and blues educator. In fact, when Scott takes the stage on Friday, he will have just completed several
days of workshops in our local schools as part of our community’s Blues In The Schools program held in conjunction with
Blues Fest. A musical scholar and historian with personal roots in the civil rights era, Scott took up guitar at age 15, about five
weeks after first hearing the late Virginia bluesman (and multi-year WMBF performer) John Jackson entertain the crowd with
a couple of songs during the intermission of a 1967 Mike Seeger concert in Alexandria, Va. Scott is understandably proud to
have been mentored by elder musicians of almost every background in multiple musical traditions, including blues, gospel
and old-time Southern Appalachian fiddle and banjo. Having published transcriptions of the guitar performances of seminal
Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, and an instructional DVD on Johnson’s guitar techniques and signature guitar “tricks,” a
Scott Ainslie performance — full of both historical and personal anecdotes — might be one of the best opportunities yet for
any blues fan to hear an authentic recreation of Robert Johnson’s true sound. Make sure you get to Hagerstown early on
Friday, May 30, so you don’t miss Scott Ainslie’s important glimpse of one of the most storied blues artists of the past!

MINGO FISHTRAP
THE KELLY BELL BAND
What’s in a name? Well for Mingo
Fishtrap, it’s an out-of-town crossroads
not too far from the tiny Texas dorm room
where Mississippi native Roger Blevins Jr.
first formed what has since become one
of the country’s hottest soul revues. While
attending the University of North Texas’
College of Music, Blevins Jr. casually
asked a few dorm mates to jam on some
old soul and funk tunes. Missing that sound that he had grown up hearing, the Mississippi
native quickly found himself surrounded by an eight-piece band, replete with percussion and
horn section. Fueled by almost-immediate strong audience response, the band soon relocated
to Austin shortly after releasing its first album. Once there, the group quickly garnered
successive and highly prized Austin Music Awards. Now, on the cusp of the June 3 release
of “On Time,” its fourth full-length CD, Mingo Fishtrap stands at the sweet spot of critical
acclaim, frequently appearing onstage with their musical idols, and delivering powerhouse
live shows to crowds of thousands. Led by Blevins Jr.’s powerful white-soul lead vocals and
guitar, Mingo’s exciting sound blends punchy horn lines with Memphis grooves and N’awlins
funk steeped in 1960s soul sensibilities. Anchored by the solid bass work of Roger Blevins
Sr., the balance of Mingo’s tight sound is powered by keyboardist Dane Farnsworth, drummer
Chip Vayenas, percussionist Mikel Urdy, trumpeter Steve Butts, saxophonist Dan Bechdolt
and trombonist Zol Waterhouse. As we round the turn of our twin-A-stage “Downtown House
Party,” we’ll be in the midst of a Soul Shakedown Party when Mingo Fishtrap’s tenacious
horn-laden soul grooves hit on our Blue Moon Stage. Give them some love!
Led by one of the region’s most fun and entertaining showmen, The Kelly Bell Band
combines original music, amazing vocals and the tight sounds of a large backing ensemble.
In addition to being a great musical performance, a Kelly Bell Band show can also be flat-out
fun musical theater, with running gags and lots of jokes becoming another big part of the
evening. Is it any wonder then that KBB has earned the title of “Best Blues Band in the MidAtlantic Region” for more than 12 years in a row? Not content to just cover traditional blues
in traditional ways, Kelly is capable of seamlessly stepping across several musical genres
from one moment to the next. Describing his sometimes irreverent, but always intelligent,
blues-based sound as “phat blues,” Kelly ably makes the point that he did indeed first absorb
all the “old school” and blues history
lessons in order to forge his fresh
new blues sound. So grab your
lawn chair or blanket, and get down
to University Plaza for our FREE
Thursday “Blues Prelude” concert.
And while you are in City Center for
Kelly Bell Band, don’t forget to also
visit the Washington County Arts
Council reception and exhibition
opening for 2014 Blues Fest poster
artist, Matt Long!
OLD MAN BROWN
A Baltimore-based, nine-piece soul/funk locomotive of harmony and groove, Old Man Brown’s
music is inspired by blues legends such as Freddie King, The Meters, Bobby Bland, The Allman
Brothers and Little Feat. Yet, interestingly, all of OMB’s musicians grew up in rural New Hampshire,
and the band formed after extended jams on a farm in central New Hampshire hosted by band
friend, Peter Brown, aka “Old Man Brown.” Having shared stages with Canned Heat, Levon Helm,
The Derek Trucks Band, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Anders Osborne, and others, OMB’s newest
CD release “Brand Me Immoral” (2013) was recorded at Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory and
features New Orleans-based guests Ivan Neville and Eric Lindell. Be sure to get to our Saturday
“Downtown House Party” so you don’t miss some great new blues-based Mob City sounds!
LOWER CASE BLUES
As part of Blues Fest, we are always interested in bringing you some quality regional midAtlantic blues that you might not yet have experienced for yourself. Lower Case Blues is a
jammin’ Delaware trio that plays a new fusion of old blues, funk and rock that we think you might
find to be a groovy way to settle down and segue from a wild Saturday of blues as we ease into
our FREE Sunday “Family Blues Picnic” in Hagerstown’s beautiful City Park to close out Blue
Fest number 19! Inducted into “The Blues Hall of Fame” for Delaware in 2012 and having been
previously voted “Best Band in Delaware” in 2009 by the readers and critics of Delaware Today,
give a warm Maryland welcome for the first Blues Fest appearance of Lower Case Blues.
MOONDOG MEDICINE SHOW
Moondog Medicine Show, featuring the strong Susan Tedeschi/Janis Joplin-inspired
vocals of Lana Spence, has turned itself into a significant force in the regional blues scene.
Considered by locals as one of “Hagerstown’s own,” we know you are going to dig this
area favorite’s polished sounds at our FREE Sunday “Family Blues Picnic” in Hagerstown
City Park on June 1.

THE TONEHOUNDS
Hailing from nearby Berkeley Springs, W.Va., The Tonehounds give fans an audio tour
through the urban and rural landscapes of American music. With a typical set full of swingin’
blues, rock and roll, ’40s–’50s
jazz and their own original
compositions, you’ll hear an
eclectic mix of sounds ranging
from Tom Waits to Louis
Jordan. Recently augmented
with the addition of harp and
saxophone, Mike Colyer, Butch

BOONSBORO HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND
The Boonsboro High School Jazz Band performs a variety of contemporary jazz styles
including swing, rock, blues, Latin, and funk. Students in the band meet after school for
rehearsal and perform in the
community and surrounding
area. The band frequently
performs at area jazz
festivals and was featured
on the Millennium Stage at
the John F. Kennedy Center

Washington, D.C., in May
2013. Boonsboro High

TRIBUTES
LAIRD BUSH
The Hagerstown musical community and
our close-knit Blues Fest event family was
shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Laird
Bush from an apparent massive heart attack
on October 2, 2013, at the age of 60. Born
in Bolivar, W.Va., he was the son of Virginia
Bush and the late Ralph Bush of Hagerstown,
and graduated from North Hagerstown High
School in 1970 and Hagerstown Community
College in 1972. He spent his life pursuing his
love of music, playing guitar in numerous area
bands such as Once Performed, Razmus, 3 For
The Show, Crosswind, Rudy & The Bluefish,
Everybody’s Brother and, most recently,
Skweez Play. He also also founded Quatro
Recording Studios. Laird cared deeply for his community, volunteering his time and talents
for many local organizations. An early member of the Augustoberfest Charitable Foundation,
Laird was active in the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and various
committees promoting the growth of downtown Hagerstown. He and his wife, Brenda, also
organized the popular Wind Down Friday series that continues to benefit Hagerstown’s The
Maryland Theatre. An outstanding carpenter, Laird enjoyed fishing, spending time with his
beloved golden retrievers — Ashley, Peach and Ralph — following the triumphs and travails
of the Washington Redskins, the company of his many friends and, of course, finding a good
pub. One of the friendliest, fun-loving members of Team Blues Fest, as the then-owner of
Laird Bush Specialty Advertising, Laird served as Blues Fest’s Marketing Committee CoChair for numerous years. We will remember with fondness and sadly miss his infectious
laughter and great spirits. Some of our favorite Laird Bush Blues Fest moments include the
year he sold the sign for Blues Fest’s Blues Boutique tent, the infamous “Gator Incident” as he
hurriedly transported replacement Blues Fest sale merchandise from his nearby storeroom,
the time the generator for Blues Fest’s parade float ran out of gas shortly into the parade route
leading to awfully quiet electric guitars and P.A., or the time Laird marketed, for a substantial
premium selling price, a horribly misprinted Blues Fest T-Shirt reasoning, correctly, to the
lucky customer that it was “the last one, and surely one of a kind”! Laird, we loved you. Your
entire Blues Fest Family will forever miss your spirited, fun-loving personality and sometimesmaniacal sense of humor.
BOBBY PARKER
One of the best things to happen to Blues
Fest in recent years was its belated, but
suddenly close, relationship with Bobby Parker,
which began with his appearance here in
2011. Bobby was such a huge hit, and his
mid-afternoon Saturday set so compelling,
we had him back the very next year for both
our mid-winter Cabin Fever Blues Bash and
as headliner of our Sunday City Park stage.
He and his band did NOT disappoint! His
death of a sudden heart attack at the age of
76 this past Halloween was especially hard
to accept, in part because we already had so
many additional future ideas about his return
to Blues Fest in mind – including perhaps,
a spot this year, but, if not, certainly as part
of our 20th anniversary celebration in 2015.
The composer of 1958’s “Blues Get Off My
Shoulder,” Bobby was perhaps best-known for his influential 1961 single “Watch Your Step,”
a song that was covered by The Spencer Davis Group, Santana and Jefferson Airplane, and
whose opening guitar riff cropped up in The Beatles’ “I Feel Fine,” Link Wray’s “Black Widow,”
and even Led Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick.” Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1937, Bobby was raised
in L.A., before finally landing in Washington, D.C., in the early 1960s. As a young guitarist,
Bobby toured first with the doo-wop group Otis Williams and the Charms before his famous
appearance as part of Bo Diddley’s backing band on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1955. Later, he
became part of the Apollo Theatre house band led by saxophonist Paul “Hucklebuck” Williams,
and also toured with gospel/soul legend Sam Cooke. While Bobby’s extremely forward and
confident manner concerning the extent of his talent could be initially off-putting, Bobby was
a gentle soul and a genius of “old-school” blues. Once you spent time with Bobby, and saw
how he felt (correctly, make no mistake) that he never was afforded the early recognition that
his talent rightly deserved, you could understand why he insisted on being billed as “Blues
Guitar Legend, Bobby Parker Band” – because he was, even if he had to say it himself. We
were so glad to have gotten to know you Bobby Parker. It hurts that it came so late. Watch
your step up there, now, Bobby.
