2012—2013 Report on Annual Giving Dear Friends, 2012-13 was a banner year for Tower School. We began the year with our Centennial Celebration during which we welcomed alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends from across the years back to Tower for a festive evening celebrating Tower’s rich history and looking to its bright future. In the spring we dressed (outrageously) for the ’80s in support of cultural enrichment and professional development at the bi-annual auction. Finally, and most importantly, in June we closed a very successful year for the Annual Fund, surpassing our $400,000 goal and achieving new Peter S. Philip Head of School heights in participation. 2012-13 was a banner year for Tower School because of you. The people listed in this 2012-13 Report on Annual Giving provided vital support for Tower at every step. Tower’s ability to deliver an outstanding education to our even more outstanding students is dependent upon the strength of our Annual Fund, and this was a very strong year. With support from 92% of Tower parents and 100% of Tower faculty and trustees, our Annual Fund results are a clear testament to the commitment and generosity of our school community. Because of you, Tower students enjoy small class sizes and individualized instruction. Because of you, Tower is able to attract and retain the finest faculty. Because of you, our facility is safe, clean, and equipped for learning every day. The importance of your philanthropic support cannot be understated. Our appreciation for that support is even more difficult to adequately describe. We will correct the error immediately. LE T TERS Dear Friends, I have the great pleasure of reporting a tremendous year of giving at Tower School. The bulk of the pages in this 2012-13 Report on Annual Giving are dedicated to acknowledging the parents, grandparents, alumni, families of alumni, faculty, and friends that supported Tower’s top fundraising priority—the Annual Fund. You’ll note that this year there are many more names to read! In Tower’s 100th year, our Annual Fund saw impressive growth in terms of dollars raised and participation rates. We surpassed our goal of $400,000, raising $405,000 for the Tower operating budget. Parent participation in the Annual Fund skyrocketed to a record 92%, including 100% participation among kindergarten families and 96% participation among families new to Tower. Annual Fund co-chairs Meghan Burke and David Anderson, along with their committee of fellow parents, transformed Tower’s Annual Fund in 2012-13. This group brought the Annual Fund to the forefront, educating our community about its importance and celebrating all things Annual Fund in Tower’s very first Annual Fund Week. With help from the Advancement Committee, these volunteers reached out to every Tower family on behalf of the Annual Fund. That was certainly no small task, but their overwhelming success is evident. Thank you, Meghan, Dave, and the entire Annual Fund Committee! One of Tower School’s most valuable assets is the network of volunteers whose energy, enthusiasm, and expertise enliven the school’s programs and events. Please take a moment to read the full list of volunteers at the beginning of this report, as well as the important thank yous below. I encourage you to share a quick word of thanks the next time you see these volunteers at assembly or on the field. Our school community is a better place because of them. Under the leadership of President Christina Pandapas, President-Elect and Treasurer Liz Cunniff, and Secretary Paige Hintlian, the Tower School Parents Association (TSPA) had another great year. The TSPA officers, as well as the committee co-chairs and room parents listed in full on p. 5, brought the TSPA mission—to promote a greater sense of community and school spirit—to life. The Totally Awesome Tower Auction benefiting cultural enrichment and professional development for faculty was chaired by Teale Bernstein and Alethea McCormick ‘89. Teale, Alethea, and their committee of totally awesome volunteers put many months of work into an unforgettable night. See p. 16 for a full recap. Thank you, Teale and Alethea! We thank Paige and Doug Hamilton and Kerry and Brendt D’Orio ‘91 for serving as co-chairs of the 10th Annual Tower School Golf Tournament and Reception. We saw sunny skies (finally!) for our day at Salem Country Club in support of Tower’s tuition assistance program. See p. 14 for more. Thanks to Edye Baker and the Grandparent Committee for their support of Grandparents and Special Friends Day, and for working to grow Annual Fund support among our wonderful grandparents. Thanks also to Emily Sheehan Lopez ‘88 and the Alumni Leadership Committee (ALC) for leading the centennial time capsule opening and fostering greater alumni engagement at Tower. Finally, the faculty achieved 100% Annual Fund participation this year under the leadership of Christine Henderson and Sig Orne ‘80.
