That is indeed wonderful news. WWOZ will be welcome in a city that seems to be – in some aspects, anyway – recovering more quickly than originally anticipated. This issue has the list of new radio panelists – check out page 6. We’re very pleased to have them on board. If you need contact information for them, send an email to [email protected], and an automatic reply will be sent to your email. We’re just a few weeks away from our anniversary as a weekly publication. Look for an announcement about a new subscription plan that will greatly expand the circulation of this magazine. We’ll pass that along soon. – Ed Trefzger, Editor Mediaguide 1000 Chesterbrook Blvd. Suite 150 Berwyn, PA 19312 JazzWeek (ISSN 1554-4338) is published weekly by 2117 Buffalo Road Suite 317 Rochester, NY 14624 phone: (585) 235-4685 fax: (585) 235-4685 [email protected] Copyright ©2005 Yellow Dog Communications Inc. jazzweek.com • Oct. 19, 2005 JazzWeek 2 Contents Oct. 19, 2005 4 10 16 News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Street date is Nov. 22. The concert and auction produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center have already raised over $2 million to date, and all proceeds from sales of the CD will also go directly to the Higher Ground Relief Fund established by Jazz at Lincoln Center and administered through the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, a nonprofit community foundation, to benefit the musicians, music industry related enterprises and other individuals and entities from the areas in Greater New Orleans who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina and to provide other general hurricane relief. The city’s diverse population of Spanish, French, British, West Africans and Americans created an original music that embodies the fundamental principals of democracy. Jazz at Lincoln Center was established to celebrate jazz and so we are particularly moved to action by the destruction visited on the Crescent City by Katrina,” said Marsalis. “The focus of the Fund will be to help those individuals and families evacuated from the greater New Orleans area as they address immediate concerns related to housing, food, education, health care and basic survival necessities. The Fund will also provide resources to assist individuals over time to rebuild their homes and livelihoods,” said Derek E. Benoit was inspired by Guaraldi to take lessons and went on to a successful career in Contemporary and Straight-ahead jazz. Through a twist of fate, Benoit has now ended up in the music chair of the Peanuts TV franchise and he’s also been involved in other Guaraldi-centric projects. The latest is 40 Years, A Charlie Brown Christmas which Benoit produced, arranged and played on. He’s also joined by such high profile guests as Dave Koz, Chaka Khan and Vanessa Williams. JazzWeek caught up with Benoit to get the lowdown on his remake of one the great Christmas albums of all time and other things. –Tad Hendrickson JazzWeek: How many Peanuts projects have you done? David Benoit: I’ve never counted them all out, but there is a lot of them. Going back, I covered “Christmastime Is Here” in 1983, so that’s going back a continued ... jazzweek.com • Oct. 19, 2005 JazzWeek 10 Artist Q&A: David Benoit (continued) little bit. I covered “Linus And Lucy” in 1985. At that time I got the attention of Lee Mendelson, who is the producer of all the Charlie Brown television shows. In ’89 I did the music for This Is America Charlie Brown, which also had a few other composers that were quite accomplished – Wynton Marsalis, Dave Grusin, George Winston and some others. For some reason he and I clicked, and then the next step was introducing me to Charles Schultz. So he introduced me to Sparky, which is what he wanted his friends to call him, then I became the official music guy for the TV shows. I’ve scored about 12 network specials. Some have been specials and some have been actual episodes. I’d have to look at my discography. Then my old label [GRP] did an all-star album commemorating the 40th anniversary of the comic strip. I was just one of the artists for that. Eight years later we had the 50 year anniversary, and I did a record with Tommy LiPuma producing this time. It was a pretty straightforward trio recording. How did the new one come about? Lee called me a few years ago and said that he’d like to do another one. [laughs] I was wondering how I was going to do another record of Vince Guaraldi music. I do the music every night in my show, but this was a challenge and a real honor. It was the first time that he asked me to produce it. How is that different? It gave me a chance to think outside the box. I was able to bring in a lot of different talents from different areas of contemporary jazz. I sent them all demos of how I wanted things to be and then they put their magic on it. And that’s how it came to be. The short story. The Peanuts children are so full fledged and yet the adults are one-dimensional. And the Guaraldi music is for the children. What makes it such a good fit? The music had to be as sophisticated and hip as the kids were. If it was the same old cartoon music, I don’t know if the cartoon would have been successful. Vince is an amazing guy. The more I get into his music the more frustrated I become. Because he had a way. He was a jazz pianist – he probably had the same issues that I do, he’s a jazz pianist who likes to write a simple melody. The most frustrating part is how he could write a simple little melody. I would think to myself: “I can do that.” I’ve written a lot of compositions for the Peanuts over the years and I’ve never gotten continued ... jazzweek.com • Oct. 19, 2005 JazzWeek 11 Artist Q&A: David Benoit (continued) close to doing what Vince did. He loved children and he had this amazing way of writing. I like to think that we’d be friends if he was still alive. Of course, I wouldn’t have this gig if he was. I have an affinity for the music and have such respect for the way he was able to write. He lived in a little world, like me, where he was a bebopper, but he liked to write these melodies for children. He has the same issue in his day that some of us smooth jazz or contempary jazz artists have now. He was one able to live in both worlds quite comfortably. I think an important reason for his success was the utter simplicity of what he wrote. There is no one in the world that matched the music to the kids like he did. With the new record, where all the musicians you called into it? All the instrumentalists I called were into it. Some the singers didn’t know Guaraldi’s work. They knew the Peanuts, but they didn’t know about Vince. Some had other issues, such as they were doing their own Christmas album or they couldn’t work out the scheduling or were under contract. But there wasn’t a single negative response. How did it work out? Rocky Schenck/davidbenoit.com We did all the tracking live, which is the way I like to do it, but the vocalists, through the process of the internet and Protools, we were able to put their track on. Chaka Khan lives in L.A. and she did her track live. That was her request: she wanted to play with the guys. What are your hopes for this record? I guess I wanted to reach out to a slightly different audience, a larger demographic, with the music of Vince Guaraldi. And to show people that this music is timeless. For me, my first record for Concord was of my orchestra and symphonic works, which is very different thing for me. So I kind of felt that I had done my art and now wanted to give the label something with good sales, something that will reach out to some people.
