Welcome

Taiwan
Taiwan – the Place to Meet
Taiwan is indeed a small country, but the smiles of the Taiwanese
people are warm and larger-than-life. It may be hard to locate
Taiwan on the world map, but it is definitely the place to meet for
exhibitions, conferences, meetings, incentive travel and events,
thanks to the island’s world-class facilities.
The words “Made in Taiwan” (MIT) can easily be seen on products
around the world. Open up a laptop and you will find that most of
the components inside are MIT. Although the island is renowned
for developing or manufacturing over 70 percent of the world’s
consumer electronics and for having the highest mobile penetration
rate globally (on average, each local resident has 1.14 mobile
phones), Taiwan is ready to move on and shift its economic focus
from manufacturing to the design and service industries.
Taiwan has already become a popular destination to hold
conferences and exhibitions because it offers modern venues and
resources. For example, many international organizations and

industries in various fields including medicine, medical instruments, information and communications
and electronic components regard Taiwan as the ideal platform to showcase their products.
The recent successful completion of two mega international events – the 2009 World Games and the
2009 Deaflympics – demonstrate Taiwan’s ability to host world-class events. The upcoming 2010 Flora
Expo will further show the island’s ability to hold expositions at the international level. Meanwhile,
Taiwan has won the bid to host the 2011 IDA Congress, once again attesting its excellence in creativity
and design.
As a host, the island enables guests easily to combine business and pleasure with its integrated, modern
and advanced transportation infrastructure. The convenience of the High Speed Rail (HSR) makes it
possible to travel from Taipei in the north all the way to Kaohsiung in the south in a mere 90 minutes.
Imagine a country smaller than Switzerland in which you can experience traveling on a train faster than
the Eurostar, pass the Tropic of Cancer and travel from a 3,000-meter-high mountain to a tropical resort
in 24 hours. Now, you have glimpsed the beauty of Taiwan. If you think it’s impossible to attend business
meetings, go sightseeing, go shopping and partake in a little gourmet trip on the same day, come to
Taiwan and we will share with you how conveniently any mission impossible can be achieved.

Excel Through the Building of Knowledge
This is the Taiwanese philosophy and, in turn, Taiwan has made the transition
from manufacturing and production to design, research and development
and is listed as the largest holder of patents for invention by the WEF (World
Economic Forum) in its “2008 Global Competitiveness Report.”
A Hub of Innovation
Taiwan is now at the forefront of research and development in every
industry, ranging from information and communication technology (ICT) to
biotechnology and powersports products. A hub of technological innovation,
Taiwan has built its industrial excellence upon decades of working with
businesses and consumers from Japan, the United States and many European
countries. It produces many high tech products that are typically first or second
in terms of global market share.
A World Leader in Industry Clusters
Taiwan’s industries are highly integrated, having been ranked first place for
cluster development by the WEF in 2008. The island’s industry clusters are
supported by an array of comprehensive international exhibitions.

A Colorful Past
Taiwan, ‘Ilha Formosa’ or ‘the beautiful island,’ so named by the
Portuguese traders who spotted it from their ship in 1544, is a relatively
small, rich and diverse sub-tropical island just off the south coast of
China. Taiwan has had a colorful history marked by Dutch, Spanish,
Japanese and Chinese influences that have fueled the culture,
creativity and industriousness of the island and its people.
A Bright Future
In the second half of the last century, Taiwan went through
a rapid transformation from an agricultural backwater to a
manufacturing and production powerhouse and, in turn,
into a global leader of design and innovation. Taiwan is an
advanced nation, aware of its heritage, yet with its sights set
firmly on the future.
The Beautiful Island
Taiwan offers some of the most spectacular sights and attractions of natural
beauty in Asia. Effectively a mountain range rising out of the sea, Taiwan’s terrain
extends from just above sea level around its coastline to altitudes of up to 3,952m
at its highest peak, Jade Mountain, in central Taiwan.
17
Food, Friends, and Fun
Culinary Delights
Taiwan is also known to be the best place to find all types of Chinese cuisine, from
Cantonese dim sum to spicy Szechuan dishes and everything in between. One can
also find food from all over Asia, such as Japanese sushi, shabu-shabu or barbecue,
Thai, Vietnamese and Indian cuisines, and a smorgasbord of Western foods, not to
mention Taiwan’s own style of cooking: a delicious fusion of Chinese and Japanese
cuisines and techniques. Prepare your taste buds for a tantalizing gastronomic adventure as you will not be disappointed with the array of food on offer here.

24-hour Amenities
In Taiwan, many people refuse to give up an active night-life just because of daytime work demands. In addition to the many famous night markets in Taiwan, the
streets are full of 24-hour retail outlets, convenience stores, ATMs, internet cafes,
food stands and restaurants, discount stores, book stores, bars and night clubs. If
work keeps you tied to your desk during the day, these 24-hour service facilities
allow you to run errands in the middle of the night. This is the benefit of being in
Taiwan – satisfaction anytime. If you are suffering from jetlag when you first arrive
here, come out and experience firsthand the vitality and exuberance of the locals at
all hours of the day or night.

Tainan’s Cultural Offerings
Tainan, Taiwan’s ancient capital, was first settled by the Dutch. After Chinese
warlord Koxinga drove them out, he too was defeated by imperial forces and the
Qing government ruled the city until 1895. With more than 50 protected sites,
Tainan is literally packed with history and its eclectic architecture is testament to
Taiwan’s role as a cultural cross-roads through the ages. Visitors can also enjoy the
city’s renowned snack foods at the Siaobei Night Market, which offer a wide range
of delicious yet inexpensive dishes. 4 Anping Fort

List of Cultural & Featured Events (chronological)
Holidays and Festivals in Taiwan have a distinctive quality and are closely interwoven with the lives of the people. The main holidays
and festivals may be divided into two major categories: Festivals are associated with the traditional lunar calendar, and official
holidays celebrated according to the Western calendar. The lunar festivals developed from the customs of China's past, and to the
celebrants, these occasions are a time for recalling one's cultural origins and remembering the wisdom of another era.

The Lantern Festival takes place
on the 15th day of the first
lunar month. Last in a series of
springtime celebrations, this
"second New Year" is celebrated
by families all over Taiwan. On the
night of the festival, decorative
lanterns depicting birds, beasts,
historical figures are carried by
children and adorn temples.

Matsu, the Goddess of the Sea, is
the most important of all Taiwan's
worshipped deities. During temple
festivals, her effigy leaves the
temple and is paraded through
the streets on a palanquin by
temple officials and followers. The
Tachia Matsu Pilgrimage, attended
by thousands of people, is the
longest and most spectacular
such parade in Taiwan.
The Taiwanese respect for filial
piety and careful attention to
funeral rites is visibly manifested
i n t h e c u s to m o f a n ce s to r
worship. Since ancient times,
a day has been designated for
sweeping graves and honoring
one's ancestors.
The Dragon Boat Festival began
as an occasion for driving off evil
spirits and pestilence and for
finding peace in one's life. This is
highlighted by the dragon boat
races, in which competing teams
drive their boats forward rowing
to the rhythm of pounding
drums. This lively and colorful
tradition has continued unbroken
for centuries to the present day.
