From now on we’ll have that ... and the one and only Glenna Milberg,” Putney said in a release. Milberg, who has been a mainstay for South Florida TV news, added, “I’m so excited and so honored to become a regular part of our go-to source of information for South Florida issues, politics and events. Working with Michael has been a highlight of my South Florida news career; he’s the consummate newsman and a great friend.” Bert Medina, WPLG’s general manager, said “this expansion and the recent addition of our 4 p.m. newscast are consistent with our mission to serve our community.” REGIONAL NEWS TAMPA REPORTER PRESTON RUDIE LEAVING TV TO WORK FOR FLORIDA CONGRESSMAN By Kevin Eck TVSPY WTSP reporter Preston Rudie is leaving the Tampa CBS affiliate to work as communications director for Rep. Rowe, who anchors the evening newscasts, revealed earlier this year she struggles with depression. “I have made the difficult but necessary decision to focus my full attention on my health and family,” Rowe said in a statement. “The outpouring of support I have received from all of you has been heartfelt and greatly appreciated, and I will truly miss the privilege you have afforded me by inviting me into your homes each day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Lauren Rowe FORT MYERS STATIONS PAY TRIBUTE TO JIM REIF By Kevin Eck TVSPY Waterman Broadcasting’s Fort Myers stations, ABC affiliate WZVN and NBC affiliate WBBH, took some time out of their respective newscasts to remember the station’s shared director of meteorology Jim Reif who died from injuries suffered in a bicycling accident. Many of Reif’s friends and colleagues remembered the Fort Myers meteorologist by telling stories about their time together or by giving their impressions of the man. “Aside from being a great meteorologist and mentor to all of us here at ABC7 and NBC2, you know, Jim was a lovable guy—a big teddy bear,” said WZVN meteorologist John Patrick. WZVN anchor Jeff Butera wrote on his blog, “Through six presidencies, Jim Reif was a fixture here. A rock. A constant. Someone the people of our community could trust to be there and to be right. In short, Jim Reif was not your typical weatherman. He was better.” GARRETT BEDENBAUGH TO JOIN WTEV-WAWS AS WEEKEND METEOROLOGIST By Kevin Eck TVSPY Garrett Bedenbaugh is joining Jacksonville CBS and FOX affiliate WTEV-WAWS as weekend meteorologist. WTEV-WAWS news director Bob Longo said Bedenbaugh will join the station in mid to late May and will start on air, “soon thereafter.” “Excited to announce that I will be joining #ActionNewsJax in Jacksonville, FL in late May!” Bedenbaugh wrote on his facebook page. “Let’s do this #FLwx! One of the most prestigious journalism awards, The Peabody is given to the best work in electronic media in the United States. Here is what the Peabody Award committee had to say about “Louisiana Purchased”: “Plenty big, never easy, this extensive joint TV-newspaper investigation of Louisiana campaign financing—who gives and gets what—put influence peddlers and buyers on notice and provided TV-news operations around the country a template for ambitious digging.” High praise from an organization that has awarded excellence in storytelling through electronic media since 1940. Since the middle of last year, this collaboration exposed illegal activities, questionable practices and toothless ethics enforcement in Louisiana’s campaign finance system. Fox 8 News stories focused on the leading sources of financial support for politicians and candidates in our state. “This is an incredible honor for WVUE and NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune,” said FOX 8 General Manager Sandy Breland. “It’s gratifying to see those who spent countless hours working on this series recognized in this way. But, even more rewarding is that our joint effort produced the kind of journalism that has impact prompting change and reform.” “We are proud of our partnership with WVUE, which has resulted in great watchdog journalism in the service of this community,” said Jim Amoss, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune’s editor and vice president of content. The Peabody’s international roster of 46 winners produced everything from news and documentaries to entertainment and children’s programming. Other winners for journalism include, WBZ for its coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings and a pair of investigations in Seattle and Nashville.
