Lind Pavilion Renovation Brings New Opportunities
It’s official! The two year renovation of the Lind Pavilion (Quonset Hut) is
now complete. Even before it was finished we were getting rave reviews
from instructors, students and art retreat participants who used the building
during construction.
The huge space is handsomely remodeled with an industrial feel, excellent
lighting and all the amenities including a dramatic mezzanine that can serve
many purposes. The colorful exterior trim and signage lend a 1950’s vibe. A
gravel walkway leads past drifts of flowers and grasses to a stunning rock wall
and staircase on Shake Rag Street, tying the building to the rest of campus.
The Lind Pavilion is a welcome addition to Shake Rag’s classroom space and is
available for rent when not in use for workshops (see page 28).

Kriss Marion
Sat, Mar 19 / 9–10:30am
CSA farmer Kriss Marion spent 20 years
gardening on her postage stamp yard in
inner-city Chicago before heading out to
the fields of SW Wisconsin. In Chicago she
designed gardens for her urban neighbors,
now she grows food for 150 CSA families on 20 acre farm. Kriss has
tried it all! Learn how to apply current commercial organic farming
techniques, British allotment traditions, and ancient subsistence
farming wisdom to grow healthy, hearty and bountiful produce
on whatever space you’ve got in a way that suits your lifestyle and
physical abilities. You’ll take a look at gardening well – from soil to
seed starting to saving your harvest through the winter. Class size 35.
CJ Kitzke
Sat, Mar 19 / 1–5pm
Create a vibrant and colorful
garden canvas to hang on a
wall, or use it to make a pillow.
Your 2’x2’ canvas will be painted

fun class with unique painting techniques to create a lovely piece for
all students. Buttons, yarns, trims and trinkets can be used to add
dimension to your painting. It will be a magical class that you don’t

the most popular
version of kimchi.
Made with napa
cabbage, it is the funky, sour, sweet spicy, hard-to-resist, Korean
soul food. We will also incorporate it into a typical Korean style
meal. The menu: a hearty braised beef bulgogi, a sweet potato
noodle dish called jabchae, and steamed sesame rice. In addition,
you will get a jar of kimchi and recipes so you can re-create the
meal for your friends and family. Bring your aprons and your
appetite! Class size 6.

Fusing Precious Metal
Clay with Argentium
Sterling Silver
Sherry Viktora
& Deb Donaghue
Sun, Apr 10 / 9am–5pm
Combine two modern forms of
silver to highlight the strengths of each. PMC allows you to create
intricate patterns and textures easily and quickly. While it is possible
to use PMC to create sheet and wire effects, it is more expensive and
less structurally sound than Argentium Sterling. Combining the two
metals expands your metal working world considerably and you get
the best of both materials! In the morning create fine silver piece(s)
with Precious Metal Clay, forming, drying and firing in a kiln or with
a butane torch. After lunch and an introduction to some basic metal
working techniques including texturing metals using hammers or
rolling mills and then fusing, permanently connect the PMC to the
Argentium sterling. Then finish your edges, apply patina, and take
your finished piece home! No previous experience required but
some familiarity with PMC or with traditional metal working skills is
helpful. Class size 8. Register by Mar 28.

can use yourself or give to others. Learn about beads, tools, and where to
get inspiration. We’ll cover all the basics of jewelry making: wire work and
wrapped loops for earrings, stringing a multi-strand necklace and how to
use beading wire with crimp beads. You’ll make earrings and a multi-strand
necklace. Kits will be available so you can do a bunch in class or take some
projects home. Tools will be available for use in class and for sale. Class size 10.

Judy Sutcliffe
Thur–Fri, Aug 25–26 / Thur 9am–noon, Fri 1–5pm
Make one or more curving, shapely concrete birdbaths over
molds you will shape yourself from wet sand. That’s on Thursday
morning. The birdbaths must stay on the molds overnight to harden
sufficiently. So on Friday afternoon you’ll carefully remove the
birdbaths from their molds, trim the edges, and start adding mosaic
to the interiors. There will be plenty of ceramic shards and stained
glass to work with for colorful designs. You’ll adhere the mosaic
to the concrete and when that’s done, you’ll grout it. Guaranteed
gorgeous! Class size 8.

Nature Printing
Sharlene Bohr
Thur, Aug 25 / 10am–5pm
Experience the magic of nature!
Learn to naturally dye fabrics
through the modern process of
eco-printing. Eco-printing is a
technique in which plants, leaves
and flowers leave their shapes,
color, and marks on fabric. Learn to
identify dye plants, how to mordant fabrics, how to create a bundle,
how different metals change the color outcome, the effects of
heat source choices, and ways to manipulate your fabric and plant
placement to vary your design possibilities. You will leave class with
two finished silk scarves and the knowledge to take your skills home
and work with local plants, wherever you might live! Bring an old,
white cotton sheet to class. Class size 8.

Art Charms
Sharon Stauffer
Thur, Aug 25 / 1:30–4:30pm
Yep, we’re going to make jewelry
charms and dangles out of that little
stuff that accumulates in your desk
drawer, tool chest, sewing kit, child’s
toy chest...or wherever. Sharon will
show you how to make nifty charms
out of inexpensive craft materials, introduce you to some great craft
techniques, and teach you basic jewelry attachment methods, then
turn you loose on her collection of little doodads and charm fodder.
Make the object itself the charm as is, or drill it, distress it, alter
it, dress it up with paint or ink, add beads, fiber, or wire. Anything
goes! Your charms can be used for a charm bracelet, as necklace
pendants, or as earring dangles. Class size 10.

Woven Bead Clusters
Cathy Lawson
Fri, Aug 26 / 9am–noon
Learn Cathy’s original design of this
gorgeous necklace. Weave with
wire and various beads through
chain to make any length of cluster,
a great technique for using up
those extra beads you may have or
for matching a specific outfit. Start
with weaving a base of smaller beads and build up your creation
with bigger and bigger beads. This is an intuitive and abstract design
that asks for balance in the finished piece – fill in with just the
beads needed to achieve your balance. We’ll discuss various finishing
techniques that will enable you to do a completely different necklace
each time. For all levels of experience, good small motor skills
helpful. Tools will be available for use in class. Class size 10.

Workshop
Lorraine Reynolds
Fri, Aug 26
10am–5pm
Joseph Cornell is known for his special brand of visual poetry,
brought to life in what he called the Box Construction. Cornell
created little stories inside “shadow boxes” – voyages of the
imagination – forged by assembling a seemingly disparate and
random collection of objects into dreamlike miniature tableaus. His
boxes address his interests in childhood, space, birds, and ballerinas.
This class builds on the idea of the Cornell box. We will be building
our own “memory boxes” – poetic little “theatre boxes” that evoke
the memories contained within. We will assemblage found objects
and elevate those objects to a place of reverence – of redemption.
This is a great opportunity to use the found objects you have been
collecting to create a unique work of art that speaks from your heart.

Experimental
Watermedia Collage
Jacqueline Sullivan
Sat–Sun, Jul 16–17 / 9am–4pm
Create paintings that will “Wow” everyone
by pouring color onto the watercolor
papers. We’ll work with Golden Paint’s
new and very brilliant QoR watercolors.
Pouring results in a loose, flowing, colorful
wash that happens naturally with this
wet-into-wet technique. After mastering the basic technique, we’ll
experiment with other techniques including the tried and true salt
and alcohol, but adding things like Rit dyes, pastel powders, metal
leaf, metallic powders, collage and more, to create very unique and
interesting abstract works. We’ll also explore markmaking and Asemic
(abstract) writing and learn the best ways to include this writing into
our abstract works. Once the paintings are complete, we will cut some
up and build a layered collage. Students who have taken this workshop
have gone home with several frameable small abstract paintings. Class
size 16. Register by Jul 5.
16C130 / Tuition $225 / Materials Fee $15
Learn about color, caning, and
sculpting through playful exploration in this 6-day intermediate/
advanced polymer clay workshop co-taught by Carol Simmons (a
colorist and caner) and Maureen Carlson (a sculptor). This workshop
was originally designed as a follow-up to Carol’s Kaleidoscope Bracelet
and Master Cane Workshops. Students who haven’t taken one of these
workshops must be experienced in creating and modifying Skinner
blends and proficient in cane construction. Taking our inspiration from
the natural world, we will use very thin slices of polymer clay canes to
construct multi-layered, fantasy flowers with interchangeable parts.
These components will be combined with sculptural forms designed
to enhance the presentation of the flowers. At the end of the week
combine your creations into a unique tabletop sculpture, piece of wall
art, or wearable art. Polymer clay will be provided. See the website for
a list of supplies to bring. Class size 16. Register by Sep 25.

The Codex Compendium
Andrea Matus deMeng
Fri–Sun, Nov 4–6 / 9am–4pm
I like the word codex. This ancient device was a
hybrid between scrolls and books and it reminds
me of forgotten secrets hidden away and requiring
special knowledge to reveal its story. Playing
with this concept we will build our own codex of
mysteries using a compendium of mixed media
techniques. The three day format will allow time
to delve into more advanced techniques to create
true masterpieces. Our unique artwork will feature
a series of 18" x6" canvas panels linked together with grommets and
chains or ropes to fold concertina style, or unfurl to reveal the story in
its entirety. You decide if you are going to build your story horizontally
or vertically, or perhaps a bit of both. After we’ve woven together our
tale, we’ll make a magnificent holder for display, incorporating clay,
found objects and textiles to make a hanger worthy of our work. Class
size 15. Register by Oct 3.

Layers: Oil and Cold Wax Workshop
Jim Scherbarth
Fri–Sun, Apr 22–24 / Fri & Sat 9am–4pm, Sun 9am–3pm

oils, pigment sticks, powdered pigments and a variety of implements.

mark making, starting points, titling of work, and working in series.
Described as “inspiring and life-changing” this workshop will enliven
your art and unleash your creative voice! Class size 12. Register by Apr 11.
