Dear Ms. Maher and the Pursuit of Excellence Committee:
Re: Athlete Development Funding Application
—
NAIRN, Aver,’
Thank you for the opportunity to apply for Pursuit of Excellence Athlete Development Funding, My
name is Avery Nairn and I am currently a U16 athlete in the Nitehawk Alpine Ski Team (NAST) in Grande
Prairie. I would like to attend an elite level ski camp being held in Whistler in July, 2013.
As you will see in the description of the training section of my application, this elite, all female, ski camp
is created and coached by Canadian Alpine Skiing Olympians Shona Rubens and Anna Goodman.
Training will be a combination of slalom and giant slalom (gateless training, drills, stubbies, gates, etc)
over 8 solid days of training, sports psych, video analysis and dry land. This is a limited quota event (16
female skiers from across Canada) so the training will be fierce, focused and fun.
of
Thank you for considering my application and for offering this type of funding to athletes. Regardless
how the application process turns out, I appreciate the opportunity.
Since rely,

A TTACHMENT.
Description of training event you are applying for funding to attend.
I am applying for funding to attend the Ski Racing Sisterhood Camp being held in Whistler in July 2-11,
2013. This elite, all female, ski camp is created and coached by Canadian Alpine Skiing Olympians
Shona Rubens and Anna Goodman. Training will be a combination of slalom and giant slalom (gateless
training, drills, stubbies, gates, etc) over 8 solid days of training, sports psych, video analysis and dry
land. This is a limited uota event(16 female skiers from across Canada> so the training will be fierce.
focused and fun.
My competition and training plans for the next 1-2 years include the following:
Train dry land year round with a trainer: in addition to my Nitehawk Alpine Ski Team’s (NAST) dry
Jand training program (September to December):
Access a Mental Skills Coach at the Grande Prairie Regional College bi-weekly, through the
ASDC;
Attended all preseason ski training camps offered by NAST:
Achieve high attendance for training at our home hill. Nitehawk Recreation Area— four days per
week (Thursday through Sunday).
Plan to continue to race competitively to finish the U16 series and continue beyond that to the FIS
program (Ui 8).
Compete in every event that I qualify for.
-
-
-
-
-
My travel schedule during this past season consisted of weekday and weekend travel (approximately 910 weekends away from home for racing and/or training). I believe that this next season (2013-2014) will
be the same with the additional week of competition at the Arctic Winter Games in Fairbanks, Alaska
(upon successfully winning time trial events).
Costs Most are fully borne by my parents (with the exception of funding from the Pursuit of Excellence
Committee). For the general ski season. I participate in fundraisers with my team (bottle drives, etc) to
help bring costs down however, this type of fundraising just scratches the surface.
—
Costs for the camp I would like to attend again will be funded mostly by my parents unless I receive
assistance from the POE Committee. The registration for this event is $2299.00 for a 9 day camp (one
day off). My parents will be driving and picking me up so the cost of this will be approximately $550.00.
Food and accommodations are all included.
I am dedicated to my goals and fully committed to ski racing. I decided this year that skiing would be my
primary focus (except for school of course). I successfully “suriived” volleyball tryouts and was offered a
position on my high school team but I felt that it would not be fair for me to play for the school when I had
plans to exclusively pursue skiing.
I believe that I have met some of the goals I set for myself as well as goals that my coach set for me for
this past year, Improvement is a huge goal for me and success for this is measured by being on the first
page of race results. This is exceptionally gratifying and shows that hard work pays off, However, there
is always room for improvement and it is my intent to keep moving forward and working on improving both
my skiing as well as my results. Camps like the one I would like to attend help motivate me to try harder
and ski faster.

Tien Lung Taekwon-Do Grande Prairie is a local non-profit organization dedicated to improving the
physical fitness and personal development of its members. We operate out of a newly renovated facility on
102 St and 100 Ave. It was built with help from the community and our members; it is the most advanced
martial art facility in Grande Prairie and one of the best in Canada. Our staff are amazingly dedicated
people who are focused on improving the lives of everyone they meet.
Our most unique program is Daily Dragons. It is an alternative to after school care. We pick up
children from their schools in one of our buses at dismissal and bring them to our facility where they are
attend class, and develop self discipline, self esteem, and self control while getting fit and smashing
boards. It is the ONLY program of its type in Alberta.
We like to imagine a world where every child can be fit, positive, and respectful by age 11 with the
skills and confidence to stand up for themselves and others. We want to give Grande Prairie children the
strength of character to make good choices and become leaders not followers. We rely on the support of
our members and community to offer these programs that have such a huge impact on our youth and
families.
Sincerely,
/
