From your base in Marbella, along the Costa Del Sol, discover Granada’s Alhambra, the rhythms of flamenco, and Hemingway’s Ronda. You’ll even journey into Morocco on this Mediterranean adventure. An axis between Europe and Africa and meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, Andalucia has been coveted by many different cultures throughout history and prehistory. East meets west in an exotic melting pot of Jewish, gypsy, Moorish, and Christian cultures. Our enrichment program provides insights to this region through a Meet the People Panel and lectures with local experts. Visit sites such as Granada, Malaga, Ronda, Marbella, and Tetouan; and enjoy activities that allow all of your senses to be engaged with the culture and history of this region, such as a flamenco demonstration, a wine tasting, and exploring the country’s oldest bullring. Joining Gaucho Getaways on this adventure are alumni and friends from UC Riverside, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC San Francisco, UC Davis, Mount St. Mary’s College, and Washington State, ensuring camaraderie with like-minded travelers and plenty of new-found friends for discoveries during independent exploration. The Art of Flamenco The emotionally charged, dramatic dance known as flamenco is a blending of the oral and musical traditions of several persecuted cultural groups. However, Gypsies from the Jeréz de la Frontera region are generally credited with its invention and development. Flamenco includes three artistic elements: the cante (singing), the baile (dancing) and the guitarra (guitar). These elements complement each other and work together to interpret the passion of the performers. While the dance style has taken to the world stage in theaters and ballrooms, at its heart, flamenco is still an improvised art form.
