January 2016
And now a word from our President…
Happy New Year, Quilters!
I hope all of you enjoyed some peaceful and joyous holiday times last month, and that you are
looking forward to a great year ahead.
Lots of people make resolutions for the New Year in hopes that they can accomplish something
they believe will improve their lives in some way. I don’t usually make resolutions, but I do make
plans. It’s not much different, I guess, but I feel better calling them plans instead of resolutions.
Anyway, this year I am planning to spend as much time as I can with my family, attend as many
quilt shows as I can, and make as many quilts as I can. Along the way, there are a few other tasks
I’d like to tackle, such as watching my weight, making time to exercise a little more, and finding
ways to relax now and then. I’ll bet my plans aren’t much different from a lot of yours.
I hope that most of you plan as well to come to as many of our guild meetings and events as you
are able. We have some terrific speakers coming this year, and they will be presenting some
pretty interesting workshops. Nancy Williams will be at our January meeting. She’s one of our
very own members, but she comes to us all the way from Cincinnati, Ohio! Okay, she also gets to
go to Road to California while she’s out here, but that’s just a bonus for her. She’s really coming
to see us and share her insight about crazy quilts. We hope you will all come out and welcome her
back.
Don’t forget, our January meeting is your first chance to sign up to attend our Retreat next July.
Check out the information in this Newsletter for more details.
See you all soon!
Sew well, and be well, My Friends!

The President’s January Challenge
The theme for our February Business Meeting and Potluck will be Favorite Storybook
Tales. Get together with a group of your friends (up to eight total) and plan to decorate
your table using a theme from a favorite children's story. We will have a friendly
competition for the glory of winning prizes for the best depiction of the theme, and the
most whimsical presentation.
Our Mission Statement
Orange County Quilters Guild is one of Southern California's oldest quilt guilds. The Guild is a non-profit
organization formed to promote cooperation and the exchange of ideas among those interested in or
engaged in quilting; to encourage and maintain high standards of design and technique in quilting; to
instruct members in methods and techniques of creative quilting; and to inspire personal achievement.

January Program
Crazy Quilts
Nancy Williams lives with her husband, Kevin, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She teaches quilt and
wearable art classes, as well as quilt restoration classes. She is a mother of twin sons, a
grandmother of a 20 month old boy and a retired elementary school teacher. Nancy has been quilting since
1984 and belongs to several national organizations and guilds in Ohio, Kentucky, and California. She is a member
of Orange County Quilt Guild and has attended 12 camps since 1990. Nancy is a quilt, fabric and book collector
and has prepared a lecture concentrating on children’s things from the past and present. “Childhood Memories”
is a trunk show of crib quilts and coverlets, doll quilts and other ephemera. Nancy loves teaching and sharing
designs and techniques. In the Designing with Panels class, you will be given many design options, four different
ways to make prairie points, embellishment ideas, and receive individual attention.

YARD SALE
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!
When you are packing away and sewing on that new fabric, don't
forget that our Yard Sale will be in March at the General Meeting.
We have received some wonderful books, templates, notions,
and or course fabrics. I take any scraps as most people cut
pieces as small as 2 1/2" square. The scraps donated go into
color coordinated bags and they are very popular!
You may bring your items to a General or Board Meeting or bring
them by my home. The address is 7042 Moonlight Circle, Huntington Beach. (close to
Goldenwest and Edinger.) Telephone 714 847-7886. You are welcome to leave items on the
porch at any time. Thanks you for your support or should I say for supporting the GUILD.

About The OCQG Library
Did you know that our Guild has a nice little lending library for
the exclusive use of our Members? Well, we do! Carol Harter,
our Librarian, has been hard at work trying to organize our
books, magazines, and other materials about quilting, and you
may have seen her working on it as you arrive to come into our
meetings.
Our library is housed in the storage closet just inside and to the right of the double doors as you enter the
Church building. We have many nice books and great quilting reference materials, and you are welcome to take
a look at them any time the storage closet is open. You may check out any of the materials by writing your name
and the date on the card in the book pocket. Give the card to Carol, or leave it in the library’s card file box, and
then take the book home with you for a month. We ask that you please return the book at the next month’s
meeting, but you may renew it for another month if you choose.
You may find that you recognize some of the books in our library as old favorites, but some of the others will be
new. Many of the teachers who have visited our Guild have donated copies of their books to our library. Take a
look at them next time you have a few minutes. You may be surprised at just how many books are there. Keep in
mind that Carol is still working on organizing, so if you pull something off the shelf, please try to put it back
where you found it.
It’s your Library! Check it out!

Thank You!
Thank you to all who helped make the quilt for
Guide Dogs of America. And a big thank you to
Kim Cunningham for quilting the quilt with the
adorable paw pattern.

Happy New Year!!!!!
On the giving front, the Pajama/Snuggle Party held in December with Social Services was a huge success. You
gals really came to the challenge and I was able to stand there proudly with 112 beautiful quilts for kids of all
ages. Last month alone you completed 24 quilts!!!! Amazing!!!! I was so proud to be able to represent Orange
County Quilters Guild!!!!
This month I’ll be passing out kits that mostly have a lot of components to be sewn and later be turned into
cute quilts. Don’t worry, they’ll all be very easy to do. I might even have some pillowcase kits to work on too.
I’d also like to do one last push for quilts appropriate for the young women at Casa Teresa, a shelter for
pregnant young women. These should be at least 60” x 72”. I’d like to do 12 of them before the end of March. I
think I already have several tops in the stash that will work. They just need to be quilted.
Let me know if you can help.
Hopefully you have made quilting a high priority for the New Year. It’s a great gift to be shared with many!!!!
Happy Quilting,
Pam Gayle
