Sardis Presbyterian Church ~ The Communicator ~ September 2012 The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve. On August 16, the Planting Seeds of Hope committee hosted about ninety members of the Rama Road faculty and staff at their orientation meeting. The meeting was held in the Sardis House, and breakfast and lunch were prepared and served by the Planting Seeds of Hope committee. Below is a letter of appreciation from Rama Road Elementary’s Principal, Patricia Denny: As the teachers and staff of Rama Road Elementary work to begin a new and successful year for every student, the entire staff had the chance to spend time together in fellowship at the Sardis Presbyterian Mission House on Thursday, August 16th. Teachers and staff thoroughly enjoyed breakfast and lunch thanks to the amazing efforts of the Planting Seeds of Hope Committee. The opportunity to work together away from school in such a cozy and welcoming environment gave everyone the chance to bond with new team members and leave feeling refreshed and focused on building a Rama Proud, College Bound culture for our students this new school year. Mere words are not enough to express the appreciation we have for the total support we feel from the entire Sardis Presbyterian congregation. Thank you for standing with us and 'hugging' us with your support. Trust that it never goes unnoticed, not even for one day. Together we are changing lives! Rama Proud, Patricia M. Denny, Principal Rama Road Elementary Join In the Journey Be a part of guiding Sardis on its journey in 2013 by serving on a ministry! In the U.S., more than 43 million Americans don't have enough to eat. This year, local hunger agencies are even more in need of our support. Twenty-five percent of the money raised during the Charlotte Walk remains here to support Loaves & Fishes, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Crisis Assistance Ministry. The balance of the money goes overseas to support the efforts of the sponsoring agency, Church World Service, to provide disaster relief and sustainable development in over 50 countries. Sardis members are encouraged to participate through donations and/or joining our Team at the 34th Annual Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 14. The walk starts at 2:30 p.m. at Elizabeth Avenue between Hawthorne Lane and Charlottetown Avenue. The walk is a 6k (3.8 miles) that takes you through the streets of downtown Charlotte. This is a great way to enjoy a fall afternoon and make a difference in our community and the world as we walk to raise money and awareness in the fight against hunger. We encourage Sunday School classes, Mustard Seed Groups, Youth Groups, Choirs, and Circles to walk together and maybe even engage in some healthy competition to see who can field the most walkers. We also encourage families to walk together, as this is a great way to raise awareness about hunger among our youngest Sardis members. We are challenging each of our walkers to raise $150, which is requesting only $10 from 15 people!! Choose one of the options to join the Sardis team and/or make a donation: www.charlottecropwalk.org Volunteers from the Sardis Team will be in the Gathering Place from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the following Sundays: September 30, October 7 and 14. CROP Walk information, walker packets, and t-shirts ($5) will be available and you can make a donation (cash or check) if you are not able to join us for the Walk. So get out your calendar and mark down Sunday, October 14. Sign up to be a walker or grab your check book or cash and generously sponsor walkers — or do both! Every member at Sardis has the opportunity to participate in this event and help fight hunger. For information about walking, sponsoring, or volunteering, please contact: Jane Tilley (704-847-0191 or [email protected]) or Kathy Nenninger (704/366-6637, 704/576-0154, or [email protected]) Family Promise Volunteers Sardis will be hosting families in the Family Promise program the weeks of September 16 – 23 and October 28 – November 4. Sardis Garden A special thank you to all the volunteers who helped to plant, mulch, weed, water and harvest our garden this year. We had a great summer harvest! We began harvesting our first vegetables in June. Over the past couple of months we have harvested over 600 lbs. of tomatoes and squash. We were able to provide the fresh produce to Loaves and Fishes, Matthews Help Center and to Sardis's homebound members. We truly appreciate all the time and effort from the many volunteers who helped to provide the fresh produce to our community. Thank you Sardis! On July 22, you donated 30 pints of blood which met the goal set for us by the Red Cross. We will have our next drive on October 14 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. We ask that you consider joining the "giving team" for our next drive. Your gift of blood will help save a life! Thank you again for your support of the Red Cross. Our Next Habitat House Beginning November 3, Sardis will work with St. Stephen UMC, Philadelphia Presbyterian, and Carmel Baptist in a coalition effort to build our next Habitat House at 329 Linden Street in Matthews. Five to seven volunteers will be needed each week through the end of February. Watch for details and opportunities to serve coming soon. MISSION INTERPRETATION MINISTRY Look what blessings Sardis is able to convey with monies that you have generously given: As a result of your care and concern for the hungry in our community: From the Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk Organizing Team: Your financial commitment will help offset the costs associated with holding the October 14 Walk so that 100% of the funds raised by over 7,000 walkers will go directly to the mission of CROP. Thank you for partnering with the Society of St. Andrew to feed hungry children and adults. The Society of St. Andrew provided over 84 million servings of fresh fruits and vegetables last year to people in need by delivering over 28 million pounds of salvaged produce to hunger relief agencies. Over 30,000 people volunteered nationwide during the year to glean and help distribute produce to the poor and hungry. As a result of your care for other needs in our community: From Safer Communities: Our mission is to provide spiritual witness and practical teaching to inmates, ex-offenders, those suffering with addictions, and their families. Your contribution will help this ministry conduct daily Life Skills classes in the Union County jail, weekly Christian discipleship training in the Union and Mecklenburg County jails and prisons, weekly addiction classes in Monroe and four times a year, weekend evangelistic services in 11 state prisons in Columbia, SC. From Mecklenburg Ministries: As we celebrate 25 years of service to the Charlotte community, we also celebrate “You” and your partnership with this ministry. Your gift empowers us to continue strengthening our community and reaching across religious and racial differences with programs such as Souls of Our Neighbors, In Their Shoes, Community Conversations and In Our Own Backyard, an interfaith youth camp. DOCUMENTARY FILM COMING TO SARDIS! RACE TO NOWHERE Sunday, September 9 ~ 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. ~ Fellowship Hall Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, “Race to Nowhere” points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. "Race to Nowhere" is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. Admission is free. Reserve your seat at Sardis.org. Questions? Contact Renda Brinson, [email protected]/704.926.1585 or Louise Lippi, [email protected]/704.366.9681. Loaves and Fishes is a nonprofit emergency food pantry that provides a week’s worth of groceries to people in crisis in the CharlotteMecklenburg area. In 2011 the pantry provided food to 114,177 people, and the organization relies on over 700 volunteers to accomplish this amazing task! After food is delivered to the warehouse, volunteers are needed to sort, organize and help pull orders. Our group performed a variety of tasks. The muscles in the crowd were pulling pallets and loading bins of food, some were going in and out of the freezers to pull frozen chicken to help fill two orders, others were packing canned fruit in bins to be shipped out with an order, and we finished our time at Loaves and Fishes by sorting and organizing giant containers of donated items. Kids had to actually get in the containers to get the food out! It was exciting when we came across the recent donations from the Sardis Food Drive and Vacation Bible School. All in all it was a great way to spend the morning. It is obvious that our Youth understand that they have been blessed and in turn they are willing to use their free time to be a blessing to others. And back by popular demand, we will eat Zaxbys, Panda Express, Pizza, McAllisters and have some surprise MAD meals! But you have to come to find out. We dare you!!!! See you on Wednesdays and Sundays, Missy Banks & Jeff Weston All In! By Jason Robbins Throughout this year of Sardis Youth, we will be focusing on one theme - All In! I know many of you know this phrase from playing or watching poker, but it means more to us than just betting all your chips on one good hand of cards. What does it mean to be “All In” for Jesus and how does that affect the way we live our lives? What does it mean to be “All In” as a community? Are we making sure everyone is invited? How can Sardis be “All In” for its youth ministry? All of these intriguing questions will be explored for the year. Sure, going “All In” is risky, and you could lose everything. We may make mistakes. We may not have what we thought we needed to be the victor. But the wonderful thing about being “All In” as a Christian is that we get dealt back into the game again and again. The only question remains is this: Are you ALL IN? SAVE THE DATES! Friday, October 26 Drop off at Sardis House 6PM - Pick Up 9AM Bring a snack to share Bring pillow & Sleeping Bag FRIENDS WELCOME! MEDIA SPOTLIGHT MAINSTREAM MUSIC CHRISTIAN MUSIC MOVIES Movie: Looper Genre: Action, Thriller Rating: Not yet rated LECRAE T.I. Background: Once called “the Jay-Z of the South,” T.I. is a hip-hop artist, producer, and actor. He also started Grand Hustle Records. T.I., 31, has had some run-ins with the police, including probation violations and weapons charges. He’s worked with almost every name in hip-hop, been nominated for Grammy Awards, and won numerous Billboard Music Awards—including Rap Artist and Rap Album of the Year. He works with the Boys and Girls Clubs and once gave 200 bicycles to kids in Atlanta. Albums: Trouble Man (2012), No Mercy (2010), King (2006) What T.I. Says: He once talked a man down from a ledge, where he was threatening to kill himself. Afterward, T.I. said, “I’m not taking any credit. … The fact of the matter is that God put me in a position to help, and I can’t take any credit for that.” Explore: T.I.’s albums are available to listen to on Spotify—including both Clean and Explicit versions of many of them. Background: Hip-hop artist Lecrae, 32, was raised by his Christian grandmother. He ran with gangs and did drugs, using a Bible as a “goodluck charm.” After going to Bible studies in his late teens, Lecrae realized the characters were just like him—but had hope and love. Five years after becoming a Christian, he started his own label and has won two Dove Awards. Lecrae is incredibly popular and a positive role model. Albums: Gravity (2012), Rehab (2010), Real Talk (2004) What Lecrae Says: In response to people accusing him of selling out the gospel, Lecrae writes: “[Christians] limit spirituality to salvation and sanctification. … Most Christians have no clue how to engage culture in politics, science, economics, TV, music, or art. We tend to leave people to their own devices there.” Explore: All of Lecrae’s albums are available to listen to on Spotify. Synopsis: In the future, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, they send the target 30 years into the past, where a “looper”—a hired gun—is waiting to mop up. Joe is a Looper, and one day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. Our Take: This sounds like a Christopher Nolan movie (but isn’t). It promises to be incredibly clever. I hope they keep it to PG13. Movie: House at the End of the Street Genre: Horror, Thriller Rating: PG-13 Synopsis: A woman and her teenage daughter move next door to a house where terrible things happened years ago. When the girl begins a relationship with the only survivor of that night, things start to go badly. Our Take: This fall’s horror-movie offering features Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence. So it’s a good bet that teenagers will be interested. For more media discussions and ideas, go to www.MinistryandMedia.com. VIDEO GAMES Ratchet & Clank—This game collects three classic Ratchet & Clank games—fully remastered—in one place. They’re fun, clever, and mostly teen-friendly platformers. Some titles are full of innuendo: Up Your Arsenal, Going Commando, etc. (Rated E10; PS3) Borderlands 2—This first-person shooter has a unique cel-shaded art style, plus technology that can create thousands of different gun combinations when you kill bad guys and loot their stuff. It also has foul language and lots of gore. Don’t let your kids talk you into this one.
