The Papoose Dec 2015.indd - Lake Mohawk Country Club
A Publication of the Lake Mohawk Country Club Since May 1929 December 2015 • Volume 81, Number 11 20 Whitedeer Plaza Lake Mohawk, Sparta, NJ www.casamiasparta.com 973-729-6606 | 973-729-6681 | 973-729-0168 Catering for all occasions. Holidays are our specialty! Free Delivery in Sparta. December 2015 GENERAL MANAGER'S LETTER Dear MembersHappy Holidays! The hallmark of the holidays is TRADITION. Whether it is a family outing to a local Christmas tree farm looking for the perfect tree, baking gingerbread cookies with the kids, it is these activities that we look forward to - and then remember in the years to come. Hopefully, many of these traditions will be passed down to future generations. My favorite holiday memory was and still is knowing that the test of time has withstood and family gatherings, holiday menu planning and festivities abound with such fond memories instilled upon my siblings from loving, caring parents and relatives. In most recent years the echo of Bah Humbug from my father was the quote throughout the season as was the much enshrined “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Deep down – this was all a façade with my father as the true blessing of Christmas was knowing my entire family would be “home for the holidays.” As we reflect at this special time of the year, I would like to remind you to support the Lake Mohawk tradition of the German Christmas Market, which happens the very first weekend in December. The tradition of the Christmas Market is a street market which was held during the first four weeks of Advent, leading up to Christmas. Generally held in the town square, the market sold food, holiday cheer, and seasonal items in open air huts, with singing and dancing for all members of the community. The history of these fairs can be traced back not only to Germany, but also Austria, France and even Italy. Our German Christmas Market has been listed as one of the Top 10 Things to Do in the state of New Jersey in December – something that the event Founders, Committee volunteers and entire Membership should be so proud of! Why travel when you can experience it all right here within the Lake Mohawk village – Whitedeer Plaza. The first evening is open to Members Only and will once again feature the Annual Tree Lighting ceremony – at the end of the Boardwalk – starting at 7pm. Mr. & Ms. Claus will once again be present for family photographs, along with a petting zoo located at the main entrance to the Clubhouse with free pony rides for children to enjoy. The traditional fare of Bratwurst, Glühwein, and other holiday delights will be available throughout the Boardwalk and Clubhouse. The Market continues throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Come enjoy the true meaning of the holidays...your community, your friends and family! As we all participate in the holiday spirit and tradition of shopping, I would encourage you all to SHOP LOCAL. The support and success of these businesses contributes directly to the uniqueness of our community. Further, their prosperity contributes to the success of Lake Mohawk. Support them, as they greatly support us. Welcome new board members – Helena Bould, Bill Greenlaw and Phil Marcellus. A new Chapter with priorities and initiatives for the new Board will take effect in early 2016 but I would be remiss if I did not personally thank Chris Cronin, Jay Dunn and Jim Wardell for your support, years of guided service and genuine care that you have bestowed upon the community. You will be missed but never far away to continue the volunteer efforts in many areas that you remain passionate in. In closing – each year during the Holiday Season, we take great pleasure in setting aside our regular work to send heartfelt messages to all of our family, friends and acquaintances. How joyful I am that this time has come again to extend to you my sincere gratitude because it is good friends, staff and community like the one we all share that makes Lake Mohawk such a special place. May your Holiday’s be filled with Joy and the coming year be overflowing with the all the good things in life. INGREDIENTS: 2 lbs of pork loin INGREDIENTS FOR MARINADE: ¼ cup Olive Oil ¼ cup Parsley (chopped) 2 Tbsp. Garlic (chopped) 2 Tbsp. Coriander (ground) 1 ½ tsp. Cumin (ground) 1 tsp. Kosher Salt ¼ tsp. Black Pepper (ground) PROCEDURE: Place all ingredients in a stainless steel mixing bowl and combine using a rubber spatula; set aside. Take the pork loin and pat dry using a coffee filter or paper towel (this will help more of the marinade adhere). Using a chef knife, score the top (fatty side) of the pork loin in a ¼ inch ‘hash-tag’ pattern. Place the pork loin on a non-stick baking sheet and gently, but firmly, press the marinade onto the top and sides of the pork. Cook the pork loin in a pre-heated 300° oven for 15-20 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145°. Let the pork ‘rest’ for approximately 7-10 minutes, then slice and serve with your favorite holiday sides! NOTES: Serves 8 people (4 ounce portion per person). If you brine your pork ahead of time, omit the salt from this recipe. Depending on your tastes, you may not use all of the marinade; it all depends how much of a crust you prefer on your pork. Created by Chef de Cuisine Sean “Hutch”Hutchinson and prepared by the team at the Boardwalk Club Restaurant. We received a total of 509 votes – 74 absentee ballots, at least 225 votes in person, and another 209 electronic voters in the first year of availability. I am excited to see that our efforts to include and hear from a greater number of our Membership are showing positive results. In addition, we had six new candidates to consider when Interior/Exterior Painting Paint Your Vinyl or Aluminum Siding Staining & Roof Cleaning Power Washing Houses & Decks Mold Remediation Carpentry & Flooring 973-729-6659 22 THE PAPOOSE voting for the Board, as three incumbents stepped down (two because of the term limit By-Law passed last year). Please join me in thanking the outgoing members of the Board for their tremendous service, and welcoming the newest members to the Board. The results of the vote are on the Members’ section of the LMCC website, and in this issue of The Papoose. Helena Bould Phil Marcellus, and Bill Greenlaw will be joining the Board. Sixty two percent of Membership voted for an updated Reserve Study for LMCC, prepared by an independent contractor and the establishment of a Capital Reserve Fund. Over 59 percent of Membership agreed that a special assessment is needed in 2016 ($140) and 2017 (up to $140) to establish the initial balance required for the Capital Reserve Fund. We did not receive enough votes to add an amendment the Club ByLaws. However, a 62 percent majority is a clear indication that the Board needs to continue in our efforts to establish this critical fund to protect and preserve our community. Thank you for your support of these initiatives, as well as the other components of the Strategic Plan. In 2016, I will be asking the Board to move forward on the various components of the Strategic Plan, as well as other important projects and agenda items. Strategic Plan initiatives that will need to be implemented as we move into next year: • Lakes - develop the long term lakes plan using lessons learned from the Upper Lake • Food and Beverage - continue Clubhouse improvements to include updates to the Boardwalk Club Restaurant and the kitchens to better serve the needs of our Membership December 2015 • Parking Lot - install a gating system for our parking lot to protect our privacy and property and to develop a revenue stream to offset associated capital costs • Delinquent Accounts - Update the accounting system to accurately reflect our true collectibles and further tighten up our collection efforts to maximize our ability to collect outstanding charges • Decreasing Unkempt Properties - continue to work with the Townships and utilize the legal system to address unkempt homes • Work with Sparta and Byram Townships to ensure fair and equal treatment • Develop a comprehensive plan for marketing our community to a wider market • Implement the components of an effective Capital Reserve Fund to mirror the recommendations of the Reserve Study Task Force: • Work on funding the initial balance of $2 million • $750,000 from the approved special assessment for 2016 and 2017 • $1.25 million raised from the sale of property • Establishment of Capital Reserve oversight committee • Update of the Reserve study every three years by a third party contractor • Set up segregated accounts for the initial funding and subsequent contributions The Board is committed to a process for the sale of underutilized and undeveloped properties that will seek and then give fair and appropriate consideration to Membership input regarding the properties being considered for sale. Any sale would also include a clause that gives the neighboring property owners the option to match any accepted bid for the property. In 2015, the PAC (President’s Advisory Committee) assisted the Board in establishing the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) program. The final step is to identify the Rules and Regulations in our community that need greater enforcement, establish a set of penalties for non-compliance, and implement as policy. The goal would be to synchronize this program with the local ordinances that are already in place in Sparta and Byram Townships. During the Tamarack Beach lot line adjustment issue, the Board was made aware of a sensitivity by Membership of the usage of the Bridle Path, and certain parts of this path that were no longer being used as such. We intend to clarify the ownership and usage of the Bridle Path to ensure that Membership has full enjoyment of this amenity. Last year’s survey indicated that Membership preferred to change the code at the back gate and to include the use of cell phones in operation of the gating system. These changes can be done without the addition of any software or hardware support, and I expect to be able to complete these in 2016. At the Annual Meeting, a decision regarding the quorum (in conjunction with legal counsel), prevented several motions from the floor from being brought to a vote. I suggest that the model for bringing a vote to Membership, outside of specific Board initiatives, is outdated. The State of New Jersey currently has a petition process that allows citizens to gather a specified number of signatures and then bring a petition to the Township Council for a vote. If not approved by the Council, the petition must then appear on the next general election or be voted on within 90 days. I suggest that a similar system should be instituted here at Lake Mohawk. This would give our residents an ability to introduce either a by-law change or a policy and procedure to Membership for consideration. Please consider volunteering to be on a committee or otherwise involved in making Lake Mohawk Country Club better and better. Thank you for your support throughout 2015, and I look forward to working closely with Membership, Intra Club leaders, Management and the Board to achieve our 2016 goals. I hope you enjoyed a Happy Thanksgiving, and please have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Sincerely, Greg Yuskaitis THE PAPOOSE 23 LAKE LIVING F ollowing the November election, we welcomed three new members to our Board of Trustees: Helena Bould, Bill Greenlaw and Phil Marcellus. But as we say hello, we must also wish three distinguished Board Members well and thank them for their commitment to our community. Chris Cronin, Jay Dunn and Jim Wardell have all worked tirelessly to continue the tradition of Lake Mohawk Country Club. We thank each of them and their families for their contributions. ......................................................... JIM WARDELL Jim and his wife Jan, have two children and two grandchildren. They have resided in Lake Mohawk for more than forty years. Jim says that he is “very thankful for this community” and realizes “what a special place this is to live”. He has also been active with the German Christmas Market and Taste of the Boardwalk. Jim’s philosophy is to live life to the fullest and to always give back. 24 THE PAPOOSE ...................................................... CHRIS CRONIN Chis Cronin and his wife, Pattie, have lived on West Shore Trail for twenty-nine years. Chris’s involvement with Lake Mohwawk has been diverse. He has been active in the Powerboat Club and has served as Commodore, as a member of the House Committee he has assisted in the Annual House Tour and has also helped to develop and organize the Tasting on the Boardwalk event. As a Trustee, he has served on the Environmental Committee, and has written articles for the Trustees Corner that was once featured in the Papoose. Chris’s motivation for becoming a Trustee was that he wanted to keep and help improve the fabulous lifestyle that he and his family have enjoyed as a member of the Reservation. ................................................................JAY DUNN Jay Dunn leaves the Board of Trustees after fourteen years of service. His departure comes as term limits take effect, limiting Board members to two terms. Jay initiated these By-law changes and welcomes new energy to the Board. Dunn says, “Every new Trustee brings creative thinking and enthusiasm. We have over 2700 homes and an abundance of talent in our Reservation. The new energy of the PAC group has also really been inspiring...they are some of the next leaders of LMCC," says Dunn. Jay and his wife, Judy have been enthusiastic December 2015 members of the LMCC community, leading initiatives such as the House Tour and the Tasting on the Boardwalk. As Chairman of the House Committee, he led fundraising efforts for projects such as the seal on the Clubhouse, new furniture on the Boardwalk, and several other improvements. The House Committee, under Jay’s tenure, is largely responsible for the beautification of the Clubhouse. The Committee is currently working on a Memorial to Fran Smith, the former General Manager of LMCC. Neighbors Helping Neighbors is another community program that Jay co-founded several years ago. Many families have been connected to help each other with home projects and household chores, as well as providing information on dependable local businesses. Judy wrote the book Reflections on the history of the Lake and is chairperson of the Architecture and Design Committee, giving input to continuing the unique look of the Lake. During his time on the Board at LMCC, Jay has seen many positive developments and improvements. “It has been my pleasure to represent the Membership during the past 14 years and I will continue to believe in the long-range potential of this special place.” • LMCC BALLOTS ANNUAL MEETING • NOVEMBER 7, 205 RESULTS TALLY Ballot No. 1 Absentee Electronic Paper Ballot Results Three Trustee Positions each for a Three Year Term (2016-2019) will be granted to the three candidates receiving the first, second and third highest number of votes. • Helena Bould • Bill Greenlaw • Paul Johnson • Phil Marcellus • Laura Parker • Kirti (Indy) Patel Ballot No. 2 45 110 119 274 36 108 99 243 32 75 93 200 30 89 137 256 40 101 80 221 21 90 124 235 Absentee Electronic AM Voters Results BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Trustees of Lake Mohawk Country Club that the By-Laws be amended in accordance with the proposed Capital Reserve Fund Amendment provided to the Members. The Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta presents the tree to the community as a vehicle through which gifts can be brought to children in need. This year, the tree will be displayed from November 19th through December 16th. It is easy to help, first choose a handmade ornament from the tree; each ornament is tagged with the age and gender of a child. Then return a new, unwrapped gift to the tree with the tag on the gift. The ornament is yours to keep. The Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta delivers these gifts to the Division of Youth and Family Services throughout the holiday season. Gifts are distributed by DCP&P to families based on need. Byram Laser Dental GEORGE J. KATA, D.D.S. This month SWC collected Boatsie Christmas Stockings to be sent to men and women in the military oversees. Boatsie Boxes began in 2004 to send care packages filled with needed items to deployed military personnel. This year thirty-two stockings will be sent from SWC to deployed military. The Sparta Woman's Club has participated in this for a number of years. In addition this month SWC saluted women in the military at their meeting. Two retired military women, Lt Colonel Susan Foy and Captain Christina Martin shared their experiences in the military. Lt Colonel Susan Foy who was a graduate of Sparta High School and the U.S. Air Force Academy spent twenty-four years serving our county as a pilot. She advanced her flying career through the years eventually becoming an instructor and evaluator pilot. She was prestigiously assigned to fly special air-lift missions on the Air Force II C-32A transporting the nation's senior leaders including the Vice President, Secretary of State, First Lady, Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Captain Christina Martin, U.S. Army served active duty for five years with two tours of deployment to Iraq. She served in the Army Reserve for three years and is currently IRRIndividual Ready Reserve, available to be called when needed. She commanded a military medical unit and had mostly men under her command. She unfortunately had to come to the realization that you cannot save everyone. She had to make sure that her emotions did not control her and her tours changed her own theory of what women can do. She also reminded us that coming home does not mean that the war is over. Each day twenty-two veterans commit suicide. For some veterans it means a new battle begins with PTSD and there is a need to support our veterans now more than ever. The Sparta Woman's Club commitment to the military also includes the NJ State Federation of Women's Club two year project for 2014-2016 of assisting the National Alliance of Mental Illness which is the nation's largest grass root organization to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI has specific programs for veterans and active duty personnel in dealing with PTSD, depression and traumatic brain injury. The Sparta Woman's Club has supported NAMI NJ by selling candy bars to assist in their projects. To date we have contributed $3,500 to NAMI NJ. SWC has contacted the following local merchants in Sussex County to assist in their efforts to help NAMI NJ: Frank's Pizza, UPS and Designer Jeans Salon in Sparta, Professional Tire in Newton and Yetter's Diner in Augusta. Individuals can purchase a candy bar at these places and help SWC continue their support of our veterans. SWC is actively seeking new members. SWC welcomes women from many townships in Sussex and Morris counties. The LMCC Club charges for 2016 will be billed in December 2015 and again this year we will be offering a payment plan option. Lake Mohawk Country Club had offered the option for our members to establish a payment plan to pay their Club Charges in 2015. We had an overwhelming response from our membership and a total of 309 member accounts signed up for the convenience of the payment plan. This year we are continuing this program to those members wishing to pay their 2016 Club Charges (Common Area Maintenance/Special Assessment/ CPI). Any member on an established payment plan will be considered in “good standing” and is eligible to sign up for the 2016 plan. The payments will be divided into equal payments per month and there will be a $5.00/per month processing fee. Payments can be processed by electronic fund transfer, checks, on line payments through the LMCC website and credit cards (which would include a processing fee of 4%). Note: Members must pay a missed payment fee of $200.00 if a monthly payment plan installment is not paid. Payment plans will automatically terminate if 2 monthly payments are missed and the member shall thereafter be ineligible for the monthly payment plan option to pay current charges. Please contact the Club Office and speak with Kathy McHugh at 973-729-6156 Extension 110 or via email at: kathy@lakemohawkcountryclub. com to set up your monthly payment plan. What a great time we had down at the beach this year! Luckily, we were blessed with beautiful weather all summer and through the fall. We have worked really hard to make our little beach a fun spot for families and because of that, we have definitely seen an increase in attendance this summer. Thanks to all the Officers for the time and hard work they devote to our beach. Also, thank you to all our friends and neighbors who enjoy our beach and help keep it a safe, clean and fun place to hang out on Lake Mohawk. Please remember to like our H 38 THE PAPOOSE Facebook page so that you receive updates throughout the year. We also have posted a Lost and Found on here. Let us know if anything belongs to you. Facebook.com/ lakemohawkbeach2. We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year! See you in six months at the beach! BEACH 3 Submitted by Laura Ammaturo ecember is here! Hopefully this article finds you warm and cozy and happily going about your daily tasks. Thank you to all who came out for our beach clean-up and D elections in October. Beach members re-elected Gerry Fiorella and Holly as president and first lady, Brad Meyers as social director, Terry Lyman and Bill Henderson as dock chairmen, Joe Martin as treasurer, and of course John DeYoung as beach engineer. Congratulations to new board members Peter Kolacek as vice president and Laura Ammaturo as secretary. Happy to be of service, it was a close race but the voters spoke as usual! Thanks to the commendable planning efforts of Brad Meyers, we were happy to enjoy many outstanding events down at the beach this past year. We had family beach Olympics, a lobster bake, scotch and cigar night, a camp- December 2015 out, and several movie nights, just to name a few. We are looking forward to more of the same for 2016. A beach 3 winter party is in the works, indoors at the Country Club, stay tuned for details. If anyone is interested in participating in one of our events or has an idea they would like to see at the beach next season please contact Brad at [email protected]. Best wishes to Sandra and Gary Main who have relocated to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Sandra was a staple down at our beach, organizing many of the social activities and always graciously welcoming beachgoers, they will be dearly missed. Happy Holidays to all! We have so much to be thankful for in our beautiful community here in Lake Mohawk. Do not forget to take the time to enjoy the beauty of the season and spend time with your loved ones and those who may need a bit of holiday cheer. BEACH 4 Submitted by Christina Repka re the Christmas Carols running through your head already? Beach Four wishes everyone a Happy and Merry Christmas. I wish you all make it through the season without hearing “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” everywhere you go. May Santa leave electronics and gift cards under the Christmas tree, and may you get a kiss from a pretty girl or a handsome boy, or A both, under the mistletoe. It is the most wonderful time of the year. This past year was truly a wonderful one at our beach. We had the most perfect and endless summer with barely a rainy day, which made the beach and lake beautiful and welcoming. 2015 was definitely one of the best years we have had in a while, and I hope it was for all of you as well. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, Beach 4 will again be hosting a visit with Santa Claus on December 12. We will be serving cocoa and cookies, and everyone can sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what you really want for Christmas! Check your email and our Facebook page for event details. Remember to check your email or join our Facebook group for info on events and important dates. If anyone is interested in participating in one of our events, has an idea for a summer event they would like to see at the beach, or to be added to our email list, please contact Kathy or Christina at [email protected]. Thanks to everyone who made it to clean up day, not only does the beach look good, it really makes the sand last longer, and feels better on the feet. We had a lot of activity at the beach this year which is great to see. Being able to enjoy the beach and lake life style is why we are all here. With winter approaching, hopefully we will have some good ice for skating and other activities on the lake. Remember everybody is “happy” at HVB! Wishing everyone a safe and wonderful holiday season. Thank you to those few souls who helped at Beach Clean Up last month. The Piccirillo’s get the award for Most Dedicated having rarely missed a fall or spring in the past several years. As a memorial to Fran and to honor her memory, the LMCC House Committee, led by Jay Dunn, commissioned a custom wood carving of Princess White Deer by local artist Brett McClain of Freehand Custom Carvings. The statue will be located on the former stone diving platform near the grotto. This was recently adapted by Master Stonemason Ciro Coticelli, from One Man From Italy. “Fran would have been pleased with the collaboration of so many people on this project,” according to Judy Dunn. It began with an idea from Judy and Jay Dunn from the House Committee. It started with a large piece of a white oak tree that Brett’s talented hands modeled into the spirit of White Deer. The custom hammered copper bowl, spilling water into the lake was hand-wrought by silver artisan Liza Nechamkin Glasser in her Nechamkin Silver Studio in Andover. Ciro and his sons did the stonework effortlessly, melding the old diving board into the statue’s pedestal. Kelly Evans 52 THE PAPOOSE from Signs, Etc. assisted with the bronze plaques. Placing the 1300-pound statue onto the pedestal will be handled by Bob Katz of Weighbridge. Princess White Deer was part of the tenth anniversary re-dedication celebration at the Lake on August 14, 1937 and stood on the grotto and spoke these words: “Greetings. Ten years ago on this very spot, I invoked the Great Spirit to look kindly upon the efforts of those who brought about this colony. I asked the sun to shine brightly, the rain to fall gently, and the breezes to blow coolly. Ten years ago, I said 'May there be many homes in the woodland, and many canoes upon the waters.’ I asked that your race might find health and happiness here, and that you might prosper. The Great Spirit was kind; he heard the voice of White Deer. The valley of my people is now the valley of your people, and your flag is now my flag. Therefore, I raise this emblem over Lake Mohawk, and ask again that you continue here in health and happiness, and that you enjoy great peace.” We know Fran would be pleased. • And the difference is...
