The chairs represented in the Champlain Collection have been selected because of their historical style and signifiance. In creating the Champlain Collection, we maintain the natural characteristics of the wood, and with the same high quality solid birch we construct a piece of furniture that transcends century’s of history and tradition. We can proudly say that the Champlain Collection also reflects the values of the past in terms of conservation and respect for the wood; what could today be called “green” principles. Because of its rustic appearance, wood that might ordinarily be discarded can be utilized, producing less waste. Additionally, less machinery, and the accompanying demand of energy, is necessary to produce the hand hewn look of the collection. Champlain Colors Considerable thought goes into achieving the natural, time-worn appearance of the Champlain Collection. Wood is distressed and is “rubbed” to mimic the wear that generations of family use would create. See Champlain wood samples for the best representation of the finish. Keep in mind, each item is one of a kind and finished by hand. Samuel De Champlain (c. 1567-1635), “The Father of New France”, was born into a Protestant family in the Province of Saintonge, France. He spent his youth in the Town of Brouage, a seaport on the Biscay Coast, one of France’s sunniest regions. He was instrumental in opening North America to French trade, especially the fur trade. Champlain’s routine was to spend several months or years managing, and exploring North America, and then head back to France to raise more funds by lobbying, reporting and publishing. He raised money for additional exploration to find the way to China, to discover mines and for colonization. They reflect the colonization period of Quebec. Their simplicity shows the primitive unsophisticated nature of furniture making resulting in part from the lack of proper equipment. Craftsmen were much more concerned with the furniture’s functionality than its beauty. Our 11-step distressing finish creates a highly distressed, hand-worked finish that brings out the woods natural characteristics for a time worn glow. Pull out the slides from the table, install the extensions on the slides and then join them to the table. Then fasten the safety hook that is located under each extension, so that it fits into the hook installed on the rails. This mechanism stabilizes the extensions and holds them in place.
