Orara Valley Fair 2011
Goodness we are up to the third edition of the Valley news for the year, gee how time has flown. The Upper Orara school is rebuilding, the new buildings arrived and are being fitted out .The teachers have moved in to the new admin building , very nice. The building to be used for the library needs lots of work and really was in a bad way. What a lovely day we had for the Fair and by all accounts those who had stalls did very well. Dianne Kingsford Smith and her band of workers really made the day a great success. We have a newcomer to the Valley News, Natural Health Practitioner Amy Moon she specialises in Nutrition, Homoeopathy & Massage . Also articles from Joy Dal Bon and Peter Faser. Thanks to Dianne Kingsford Smith again who always makes time to write more than one article for the newsletter. What’s the saying? ask a busy person.... Orara Valley Fair 2011 At last a cold frosty morning to herald in a beautiful sunny winters day. After a flood over the Queens Birthday weekend which lead to the fairs cancellation, to crunch over the Recreation ground with every step was pure pleasure. With the weather shining over the valley the crowds flocked to the Fair to enjoy the attractions, stalls and catching up with friends and family. The committee were thrilled to see the enjoyment on people’s faces. Once again the tractor ride proved to be very popular with kids of all ages. The woodchops gave a great back drop to the grounds activities and a fantastic place for people to sit and admire the skill and speed of the axemen. For the kids entertainment came in many ways with a circus workshop from Coffs coast Community Circus, The Lions jumping castle (saved by committee member Paul and his spare blower and Geoff’s spare generator), The Orara Axeman’s ball passing skills and some old fashioned three legged and lemon races. Music supplied by 2 Air FM and Errol Gray and friends entertained all, with Brian whipping up a storm with his cracking. Holiday Trading Hours Monday 3rd October 8am -2pm AVAILABLE NOW: HOT FOOD, SWEET TREATS, SPECIAL OCCASIONS CAKES & DESSERTS MADE TO ORDER, LOCAL FRUIT & VEGIES PLUS LOTS MORE! Page 1 Orara Valley News Spring Edition 2011 Edition 142 Once again the Orara RFS and Anglican Church controlled the parking and gate keeping respectively. The RFS reported parking more cars this year than for many years. With all this activity it again fell to a small band of volunteers to ensure that the day went ahead. If the community wish to enjoy these days which help to support local infrastructure and organisations than I would urge them to join the committee before the day folds because of lack of interest in the organisation of the day’s festivities. Bits and Pieces. Peter Fraser 66 538 336 Motoring. Motor vehicle accidents have prompted a demand for safer roads. The Government response is to build autobahn style highways, great but at what expense? Germany has a population of 82 million, an area of 357114 sq km and a GDP of $3.339 trillion. Oz has a population of 22 million, an area of 7617000sq km and a GDP of $1.235 trillion. That is an area twenty times that of Germany, a quarter the population and 1/3 the GDP. No wonder the Government has to borrow so much to meet the demands/expectations of the electorate. The C Class Mercedes Benz has Parktronic with parking guidance, Pre-Safe brake system, Attention Assist, Lane Keep Assist [stops straying into the wrong lane] and Blind Spot Assist. Too many gadgets! Remember the Honda Civic, that pint sized car that ran on the smell of any oily rag? Well the recent models appear to be larger and I note that the latest Toyota Yaris [to be released later this year] is also larger. The write up states that 15mm has been shaved off the roofline while the body is 100mm longer and the wheel base an extra 50mm. So what starts off a small car grows to a medium one. It was fantastic to go to the Dance held by the Upper Orara P&C on the long weekend, with fabulous support from Karangi School families. These nights though I heard from a third party ‘didn’t make enough money ‘, are how we can build community participation. We all hear about how it falls to a few to get community activities going. By coming together socially will help to build community spirit. We have missed out on engendering a sense of community participation with the last generation; by bringing children and parents together for fun and sense and purpose. I would ask both schools to consider combining their efforts to help bring the community together. I for one will be with them to help and dance. The NRMA’s Product Disclosure Statement solves the problem. Under its [NRMA] policy Veteran is a vehicle made before 1919; vintage is made between 1919 – 1930 and what is a relatively new category ‘Classic’ is a vehicle of 15 years or more and recognised by the NRMA as a collectable vehicle. The vehicles in all categories have to be used for hobby or recreational purposes and travel no more than 9000km annually. Health Matters. Coffee drinkers can have a reduction in prostate cancer and are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease dementia and strokes. Generally, scientists attribute the health benefits of coffee to the antioxidants and minerals it contains, although it is possible that some other mechanism is at work. Good hydration is essential [Advocate 8.6.2011]. Recommended daily intake of water is; 9 to 13 years of age Males 6 glasses 14 to 18 7 Adults 10 Females 5 to 6 6 8 where the glass is 250ml. In Australia 48000 men die every year from preventable diseases [5 every hour].ABC Radio, 6.6.2011. We certainly live I in a good country. I can remember as a child there was the family doctor and perhaps a couple of Specialists. In my case today I have my GP and six Specialists watching my health. That accounts for the increase in life expectancy. The United Nations reports that we will be in strife by 2050 unless we cut down on the use of natural resources [oil, copper and gold]. Governments must find ways to do more with less. Currently people in rich nations consume an average of 16 tonnes of minerals, ores, fossil fuels, biomasses and other products from plants- per year. Some wealthy countries consume 40 tonnes while India’s people average 4 tonnes. [Advocate 14.5.2011]. Coal seam gas exploration licenses and permits cover 50% of NSW the bulk of which is in North East NSW. Severe environmental damage can result from such exploration. Check with the local member if there are any concerns.[Advocate 12.5.2011] Gardening. Eucalyptus Grandis or Flooded Gum is not the usual tree to have in the garden for, as the name implies it is the largest of the Eucalyptus family. Nonetheless, with early morning or late afternoon sunlight on its trunk it is indeed majestic. I heard a comment by a gardener that they walk through their garden each day. I would find this difficult to do [the discipline to find/spare the time] but the concept is great because it enables you to get close and personal to the plants as they grow and die. It inspires one to do more and it lifts the soul and if you are so inclined brings one close to the Creator. It is not too late to do last minute pruning. Check the garden for excess growth during last summer and shape the plants/shrubs for there new spring growth and blooms. Consult your gardening manual for your favourite interest [orchids, veggies, flowers, fruit trees, ornamentals] as to what they need for the new season. I have a feeling that this year it is going to be a good one. A recent visit to a neighbour’s garden showed how we view what the garden should be like. This particular garden had been neglected and the new owners put heaps of energy into removing weeds and establishing there ‘own’ plants of interest. A new pergola and the rejuvenation of part of the original ‘homestead’ plus the impact of deciduous trees and expansive lawns transformed the garden. Page 3 Orara Valley News Rainfall. For those who remember, the 2011 June long weekend was wet and the Orara Valley Fair was postponed. Of course this is not the first time the big event has succumbed to the elements. My rainfall readings, going back to 1991, indicate that there always is a drop or two of H2Oin the first two weeks of June but1999 had a real downpour in that period and the Fair date is always an anxious time as organizers study the synoptic charts. Mostly the first frost of the season has arrived by the Queens Birthday long weekend and this year was no exception. The mean rainfall for June is 163mm with the highest for the 100 years [at Aurania] to 2003 being 1093 in 1967. Sunday Drives are great when visitors arrive. We did a nice drive from Dairyville, to Glenreagh [Rail Museumfrom the outside and the big ‘Golden Dog’], to Coutts Crossing via Braunstone, to Shannon Creek Dam and the picnic area [the Dam was full], Russell Crow’s Nymboida Coaching Station Inn [Museum of Interesting Things] and a beaut meal, on to Dorrigo via Bostobrick and Dorrigo North, to Bellingen and home. An all day outing but enjoyable. Scripture in schools has recently been in the media following the introduction of an ‘alternate’ subject ‘ethics’. Ethics is defined as ‘set of principles, morals and rules of conduct’. There is a view that ‘Scripture’ does not convey to children, at school, these principles. It is interesting to note that in this term the Scripture Lessons include subjects on encouraging, helping, teamwork, doing good for others, caring for the poor, being generous and making a difference. The authority for these lessons is in the books of Acts, Luke, Proverbs, Corinthians and Matthew of the Holy Bible. I pray that these lessons can be beneficial to the children. The Cost of living today appears to be higher than it was 40 years ago but statistics reveal that some costs are lower today. We have more disposable income [for double income families] than we did 40 years ago and there are more things/stuff to spend our earnings on [look at all those op shops with their boutique gear] so we part with our money quicker, not because of the cost of goods/services but because of the things we ‘have to have’, our standard of living is higher. Being concerned [at the end of the financial year] as to where our dollars went, I compiled a spread sheet of all income and expenditure with the aim of ‘doing a budget’ for 2011/12 to enable cost savings. The analysis revealed a couple of large non recurring expense items and gave an indicator where savings could be made. Quarterly reviews will help keep on track and save for the day when the cost of living could be worse. That is all for this edition. Enjoy Spring. Spring Edition 2011 Edition 142 All Saints Anglican Church Upper Orara As you would be aware from the article in the Coffs Coast Advocate the community is in danger of losing the church. The church celebrated its centenary last year, two years after the Orara Public Hall. Unfortunately due to falling congregation numbers the Sunday services stopped 7 years ago. Earlier this year the Diocese placed a notice on the church door that there was to be a meeting at Nana Glen. At the meeting the community could ask questions about the churches sale but there was a meeting after where the decision on the future of the church would be decided but no locals had any vote. The church is in debt to the tune of several million dollars because of an Anglican School in Grafton. A spokesman at the meeting claimed that the church had ‘taken their eye off the ball’, and this how the debt was incurred. The local Orara Valley churches, Coramba, Nana Glen, Glenreagh and Upper Orara are $70,000 in debt. The churches solution is to sell the church to Bishop Druitt College and then sell the block of land between the Hall and Cenotaph. This raises several issues; Where does Bishop Druitt College obtain $200,000.00 to purchase our church As the community has paid for the land and built the church how can they sell it and pocket the money When the majority of the debt was incurred by a school in Grafton how does that justify the sale of a church in Orara The church is Heritage listed on the Coffs Harbour City Council LEP Currently we have gathered 60 signatures on a petition to take to Council as a way of showing the interest the community has in saving the church as a community asset. Though the Diocese feel that they have already won the case to sell, the community have a committee of 6 which have approached the Council with the concept of creating a Heritage Precinct which would gather the Hall, Church, Cenotaph, Centenary memorial and the proposed Vintage Farm Museum. The committee have been discussing strategies for making the church a revenue neutral operation. This would include things like making the church non denominational so any religion could use it for services and ‘coffee in the church’ as a meeting place on the weekends. The church could be marketed as the perfect wedding venue with the hall next door as the best place for wedding breakfasts. There are a myriad of possibilities if the church would give the community the opportunity. The church has helped the Page 4 Orara Valley News community by manning the gates for the Orara Valley Fair. The community in return has paid them for doing this job. The first we knew of the sale was in May. For the previous decade the church could have asked for help or suggestions to ensure that the churches costs could have been meet. To turn around and sell saying that the church wasn’t being used by the community is ingenuity of a sort on their behalf, it’s hard to use a church when is doors have been closed! Anyone interested in saving our Heritage Precinct please phone Dianne on 6653 8193. PLAYGROUP Monday from 10.30am to 12pm Except school holidays Orara Rec Ground Playgroup is such an important part of early childhood development, and the kids really enjoy making new friends and look forward to it every week. It has great toys and craft supplies. It is also a great way for mums to get out and meet other mums, and to just sit and relax and enjoy a coffee and a chat. We hope to see you there! It’s hard to believe that we are in September and of course, Spring! There is little to report on the fire front, as the weather has made it a little difficult to have too much in the line of fires. Unfortunately this means that we have also ended up with more of a fuel load at the beginning of our fire season this year. So, yes, permits are now required, which means that you must contact our permit officers as soon as you know that you are requiring a fire. Please be patient as far as permits are concerned as our officers are volunteers and can only do the permits in their own personal time. Permit Officers are as follows: Warwick Howe…..Dairyville Road 66539027 Rob Rogl….Friday Creek/ Loop Rds 66538822 Geoff Hoschke…..Upper Orara Rd 66538205. Please remember that you must advise your neighbours 24 hours before lighting, and you must also contact Firecom and advise them at least one hour before you commence your burn. Your permit officer will advise you of the number that you need to contact regarding this. We have also had Life Education come to visit. At the moment, Nardia Pade from Harbour Tennis is running her Kanga Kidz program at Pre School each Wednesday afternoon, it is great to see the children developing lots of new skills. We have also organised a visit from a Dental Nurse in October to give the children a talk on dental hygeine. Congratulations to Redeina and Trista, who have both completed their Certificate III , they both put in a lot of hard work to finish ahead of time. Well Done! WOW! We have lots of exiting things happening at the moment. Our new pre-school building is well underway and looking great. The children are going to love our new adventure playground! We are hoping to be in sometime during Term four. This term we have been discussing sustainability and how we can all help to look after our environment, the children have been really keen on learning about recycling. At our lunch tables we now have red, yellow and green containers which are providing lots of opportunities for discussion on things that can and cannot be recycled. We are hoping to organise an excursion to the Coffs Recycling Centre in term four so the children can see first hand how things can be re used.
