I hope you have seen the pictures on the Web Page or Facebook. I wish to thank every one of our Officers and our Members – THANK YOU FOR DOING IT AND BEING THERE. The after party was fun and the food was great plus the bar had a big night. There are so many people for me to thank by name, but I do want to say a Big Thank You to Carol and Phil Promessi. They were handed the ball and they ran with it to the finish. The other event I want to talk about for April is First Sunday. Boy, what an event for our Club to be able to hold and call it our own. The food was amazing but the show was out of this world. They had two ladies sign, Omega and Hope that put us up into the stars. If you have not been to one of the First Sundays, you are missing the boat. Good Job to Jeanne Pedersen. March was another fun filled month for the Club and April is turning out to be the same. As of this writing we also have a busy month in May. I know, I know – it is not always just fun that we have. Those who seem to come time after time to organize, help, pitch in, etc., do work very hard. So if you have not had a chance to Volunteer, PLEASE do. Just read about events or ask a Board Member what you might do. Everyone could use an extra pair of hands and we don’t want to wear out those who always help. Just a reminder, the minimum charge for credit cards is $10.00. We are charged a percentage by the credit card company for each transaction under ten dollars and this therefore, costs the Club money. Also, we do carry a minimum of cash so smaller bills are appreciated. Carol Buyvid Now for May. I hope you have seen the flyers for Cinco de Mayo to be held May 7th and Jim Martin’s Big Rib Feed on May 28th. Both of these parties are going to have Music and Dancing. Steve Simmons is helping on the 7th and DJ Watergate (Charles) will be our DJ on the 28th. Other events in the works are Western Night, a Fun Run, a Golf Tournament and our Annual 4th of July Rock the Dock Party. So many things are happening!! P.S. Thanks Again for Everyone’s Help. Your Commodore Rich Officers and past Commodores with Father Robert Rien Enjoy the Yeoman in Color - Visit us on the web at www.pittsburgyc.com Page 4 Pittsburg Yacht Club ~ The Yeoman FROM THE REAR COMMODORE Steve Simmons Hi Club members! Most of our efforts for the clubhouse this last month have been in planning. We are still evaluating our sewer system. We are making progress there but still have further to go. Thanks to George Iaconnis for helping to map out the heating/cooling supply and return vents and the registers that control them. We are working on a strategy to increase comfort and reduce costs. We have plans to improve the club cleanliness. We have completed the plans for our new storage container, spoken with the City, and are moving forward with production and installation. Thanks again to Dan O’Connor and Dick Dillon for their help. Also thanks to Ken Esse for providing some florescent exit signs and a custom stainless steel divider for our stove—both were necessary to satisfy a recent fire inspection report. Have you looked up yet? We put up more flags as you enter the Club. We had two PYC functions this past month. If you missed first Sunday, you can come next month. Just ask anyone who has attended if they would recommend it to you. They surely will! Jeanne Peterson does a special job coordinating the First Sundays. And if you missed opening day on the Delta, the parade and blessing of the fleet—come next year because it is sure to be an ongoing hit. Special thanks to Carol Promessi and Rich Irwin for their planning and execution. Thanks also to Ken Esse, Rich Parks, Sam Magno, Joe and Margo Miyamoto, Brad, Floyd Harley, and Doris Bedford for helping set up. And to all of you who brought, salads, beans or desserts==Great Job! Looking ahead, Rich and Carlos will be hosting a great Cinco de Mayo Party on the 7th of May. Eat, socialize, dance. It’s a party! Steve Simmons Rear Commodore May 2011 FROM THE PORT CAPTAIN CAROL PROMESSI [email protected] 925.427.6250 We did it – Opening Day and the Blessing of the Fleet, was outstanding! Originally, we had 22 vessels signed up, but with some engine problems and sickness we ended up with 19 vessels which was fantastic. We had some members and guests that were able to jump on other boats and help crew or just have a good time. After the heavens opened up on Thursday and just pored I was really getting nervous, but on Saturday we had a beautiful day. Captain Dean Weihe and First Mate Julie were gracious to host the Commodore and several Past Commodores, Port Captain and Father Robert Rien of St. Ignatius of Antioch Church to perform the “Blessing of the Fleet” from their vessel. This is what it is all about folks we got together had a wonderful time and spent the day at the yacht club visiting and renewing some friendships. We even had a couple of vessels join us from the Classic Yacht Assoc., who cruised in for the Friday night dinner and spent the weekend with us. What fun!! Our First place vessel was “Despacita” Debbie & Max Gonzales, Second place was “Harmony II, Joe & Margo Miyamoto, Third place was “Bobcat”, Robert Wilson. The Judge’s Award went to guests “Hasty Decision” Terry & Lynn Leonard and all their duckies following! We had a fun filled day and the weather was perfect. I want to thank all who, with their labor of love helped set up and tear down, they were: Sam Magno, Rich Parks, Carlos Jaramillo, Rich Irwin, Ken Esse, Lindy Friedman, Steve Simmons, Phil Promessi, Carol Buyvid, Joe Miyamoto, Floyd Harley, Matt Dillon and Brad. Many thanks to Doris Bedford, Jeanne Pedersen & Carol Buyvid selling the tickets and again thank you Jim Martin for loaning the tent to help keep the food in the shade and the gals out of the sun!!! I apologize if I forgot any one; I really appreciate everyone’s help. And to, Jeanne Pedersen, Jul.ie Weihe, Lindy Friedman, Margo Miyamoto, Dahlia Palomino, Nancy Hitchings, Vicki Schoenthaler, Dorothy O’Connor, Joanie Marsh, Carol Teiche, Wanda Dillon, Estella McGrath, Carol Buyvid, Rich Parks, Sharon Ritallia, and Doris Bedford who signed up to bring the wonderful salads and baked beans. I also had some others that popped in with goodies. I also want to thank my talented husband for making new number signs for the parade; it took a lot of time and effort getting them ready in time for Opening Day. Also, to Glen Abrams for the great trophies and participant plaques which was handed out to those who were in the parade. Looking forward to seeing you at these functions! Carol Promessi Port Captain FLEETING MOMENTS FLEET CAPTAIN FRANK TEICHE [email protected] Past Commodore’s Formal Attire 925-584-5185 or 925-432-2436 The PYC Fleet cruised to Caliente Isle Yacht Club on Friday, March 18, on a stormy, wet & windy day led by Ben Blair. They arrived safely at Caliente Isle and were able to tie up all the boats in the storm. Caliente had a wonderful corned beef & cabbage dinner. During dinner the club lost all electricity in the main dinning room and we finished our dinner with romantic candlelight. After dinner it was Mardi Gras time in the bar and there was dancing and comradery. We had a very pleasant evening and one of our members celebrated by going for a midnight swim. On April 15, Joanie Marsh led the fleet on the cruise to Marina West Yacht Club at Tower Park. On May 20 your fleet Captain will lead his first cruise-out on the “Staying Afloat” to Discovery Bay. Be sure to sign up when the cruising list is posted and I promise you good weather and a fun time. Past Commodore Carl Moberg and his wife prepared more than 75 pounds of corned beef and cabbage for the affair and members are still raving that the Mobergs are the greatest. A social hour preceded the dinner and Commodore Walter Wipple welcomed members and greeted guests. Name tags were presented to everyone and for those who forgot to wear something green in keeping with the holiday there were top hats and frilly crowns available for a bit of the “green stuff”. Members of the Dos Rios Yacht Club, a cruising group based in Antioch were on hand for the occasion. Dancing was enjoyed by all after the dinner. PYC has members from throughout the county and beyond. Some of the members pictured in the article were Harry Castiglione, Louis Mascheroni, Bruno Giovachini, Commodore Walt Wipple and his wife Eleanor, Al Viscuso, Louise Forest, Ray Fisher, Theresa Saput and Fred Ernst. The above article in the Pittsburg Post Dispatch was written by Katharine Belleci, Editor, on March 19, 1975. And that’s the way it was. May 2011 Pittsburg Yacht Club “Day at the Races” By Daniel Braun I would like to plan a club “land outing” to Golden Gate Fields at the Turf Club for a fun day at the races. To give plenty of time for preparation, I would like to plan for a weekend day in September between Seafood Festival and Down Bay Cruise. I am shooting for one of these dates: Sat 17, Sun 18, Sat 24 or Sun 25. What Golden Gate Fields will supply to our PYC group in an all inclusive price is: parking for your bus (if we charter one), Turf Club admission with reserved seating, buffet and tax/tip for the food servers. Also a daily racing program and a race named in honor of Pittsburg Yacht Club. During this race up to 6 members will be invited into the winners circle and have a group photo taken with the winning jockey of that race. A prior quote for this was $30pp. I’ll have to find out what September will be, but most likely around the same. This is actually a good price because admission to the Turf Club is $15 and a buffet can cost as much as $21 plus tax and tip. The way the bus charter works from Sierra Pacific Tours is by the bus. It’s a fixed cost of $865 for a 47 passenger bus and $995 for a 55 passenger bus. That equates to about $20 per person for a FULL bus. The less full the bus, the more per person it will cost. As an example if there were only 35 people on a 47 passenger bus, it will be $25 per person. So … let’s fill the bus. But people can commute one of two ways. Either the convenience of the bus (think of it as a big limousine), where we can party there and back. Or if you prefer, you can drive your own vehicle and just pay for parking or valet. I would like to get a count of interested parties so I can choose a date and put in a reservation. Please either email me at [email protected] or call me at 1-888-dtbraun (3827286). Let me know which dates are good for you and how many people do you think would like to come in your party.
