PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends,
Dinner for Lang Son
Last Friday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Lang Son fundraising dinner with many of you. It was a
wonderful night with singing by our former priests and even some dancing. The silent auction was a huge success and
the Vietnamese community overwhelmingly supported the evening. $68,000 was raised for the people of Lang Son to
once again ensure quality drinking water and housing are made accessible, items of which we often take for granted.
Bishop Ngan skyped in and expressed his gratitude for the generosity of so many. Congratulations to Vincent Arthur,
Mandy Passmore and the team for organising such a wonderful fundraiser. John O’Haire was MC extraordinaire.
Parent/Teacher/Child Conversations
Next Thursday the students will be dismissed at 12:30pm in readiness for our Parent/Teacher/Child Conversations.
Please ensure you have returned the learning portfolios which were due back by 20 th July, as the school report and
goal in the learning portfolios are a major focus of the conversation. To book your appointment time please go to
www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use code 4QK5A.
Family Fun Fair Raffle Tickets
Please remember to return all Family Fun Fair raffle tickets, sold and unsold by Monday 24th August. It is a legal
requirement as part of the raffle license that we must account for all tickets and as such we will need to “chase” down
all tickets not returned by this date. This raffle is a wonderful opportunity to win a car and many other prizes whilst
supporting the St Michael’s Fun Fair.
Kathy’s Absence
Next week Kathy will be away as she is having arthroscopic surgery on her knee. We wish Kathy well and look
forward to her return. She will be away from Tuesday 25th August until Wednesday 2nd September. Vanessa will be
working throughout the week in the office.
Father’s Day Stall Co-ordinator and Helpers Required
Our annual Father’s Day stall is scheduled for Wednesday 2nd September. We need someone to coordinate this
stall. There is not an extraordinary amount of work left to do as Lisa J has already purchased and wrapped all of the
gifts. Trudy R is setting up the Ticketebo, so all that will be required is for someone to run the set up on the day and
coordinate all of the other volunteers. Coordination will involve setting up the trestle tables, laying out the gifts and
ticking names off class lists once each child has selected a gift. Please email Judy B directly if you are able to assist.
[email protected]
Your children would love to see you involved especially when buying that special gift for Dad.
Charlie’s Country Movie Night
Next Sunday evening at 5pm in the Hall, the St Michael’s Social Justice Group is presenting ‘Charlie’s Country’ a
movie set in Arnhem Land. Please join Meredith and me at this fundraiser for Opening the Doors Foundation. Entry is
by donation and includes a light meal of soup and rolls, tea and coffee. I look forward to watching this acclaimed
movie and supporting this worthy cause.
For further information contact Judy Sullivan 9888 8441.
Welcome to baby Sarah Roisin Whitehouse. It is
wonderful to welcome her to our community.
Congratulations also to Troy and Caroline Gleeson
upon the arrival of baby Eliane. She joins big sisters
Chiara (Prep LG) and Holly.
Please give us feedback as we try to improve our
newsletter format.

Parent/Child/Teacher Conversations
Thank you to all of the parents and caregivers who have made a booking online for our Parent/Child/Teacher
Conversations. Each conversation will run for 15 minutes and be based on our mid year reports, the children’s
learning folios and our ongoing data collection. Please go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the code 4QK5A
to book your conversation. Bookings will close on Tuesday 25th August at 5pm.
Extend will operate aftercare from 12:30 until 6pm.
Book Week
Our Book Week celebrations started this week with a visit from Felice Arena. All of the children enjoyed his
presentation and I heard that some staff members also enjoyed the whoopee cushion challenge even more. The
children will also vote for their favourite Book Week book and next week we will announce the St Michael’s Awards as
well as the Children’s Book Council Awards.
On Monday afternoon, different staff members will read their favourite books to different classes and then we will all
join together to read a book in The Hub. Next Wednesday afternoon, the Resource Centre will be open until 4:30pm.
We invite all families to drop in and look through our expanding book collection and complete some Book Week
activities. Younger siblings are more than welcome to come and join us. On Friday 28th August, our Book Week
celebrations will conclude with our Book Week parade in The Hub. Our parade will begin at 9am and all parents,
caregivers and other family members are welcome to come and see our amazing costumes.
Mini Vinnies
We have a small number of squares knitted and we are still on the look out for people to join our knitting group. Our
next meeting is Monday 24th August at 11am in the Supper Room. We are also able to send wool home if you are
unable to make our meeting. Please let us know if you are able to support us in any way.
Our Mini Vinnies are also designing birthday, everyday occasion and Christmas cards. These cards will go into the
competition at St Vincent de Paul and they may be part of the cards that the charity sends out for different occasions.
Confirmation
Thank you to the Roberts, Timms and Sequeira families for offering their home for our Home Masses. We still require
one family to host a Mass on Tuesday 27th October. If you are willing to open your home, please contact me via
email. All Year Six students should have received information regarding Confirmation last week. If you did not
receive the information, please let me know and I will forward you an electronic copy.
School Disco
We look forward to seeing all of the children at our School Disco tomorrow (Friday) night. Our Prep to Year Two
students will be demonstrating their moves from 4:30 to 5:30pm and our Year Three to Six students are invited to
come along from 6 to 7pm. The cost is $5 per child or $10 for a family of two or more.

STUDENT WELLBEING
At St Michael’s, we focus on ensuring consistent expectations in classrooms and on the playground. When speaking
with our students about their behaviour, teachers use a language that is consistent and supportive of a restorative
philosophy of behaviour management.
The restorative approach:
 Promotes awareness of others, responsibility and empathy;
 Promotes reaffirming relationships through programs that teach social skills and emotional literacy;
 Involves direct participation of those affected by misconduct in its resolution
 Promotes repairing relationships;
 Provides consistency; and
 Is concerned with establishing or re-establishing relationships in which each person’s rights to equal dignity
concern and respect are satisfied
I am very happy to speak with you at any time if you are interested in finding out more about our school’s policy and
procedures in this area.

Recap
Our cooking adventures were a real hit last week with the
children taking home lots of lovely goodies to share with
their families. The children were given the choice with
their igloos to make them either “edible” or “inedible”.
Guess the outcome? Zoe B was simply wonderful as she
instructed us how to make the edible version of the igloo.
Well done, Zoe! The children are really looking forward
to having a second go at constructing igloos later on in
the year . Our art wall is looking spectacular with the
glittering salt pictures that the children enjoyed painting.
Another popular activity at the moment is learning to use
the watercolour pencils to create all sorts of artwork. It
really has taken off as a popular thing to do !
Book by Friday 4th September to avoid a late fee.
– Ella
