Lyrics: Carol Ann Duffy
Music: Orlando Gough, Jessica Curry, Jonathan Bates
A century on from the Battle of the Somme, we mark the anniversary with The Durham
Hymns, a major new work for brass band and choir. The Hymns will premiere in an exceptional
concert in the fitting surrounds of Durham Cathedral.
The lyrics for the Hymns have been specially commissioned from the Poet Laureate,
Carol Ann Duffy, who has been inspired by the personal letters, diaries and experiences
of real people living in the county during the war years.
The Hymns will be performed by The Centenary Choir and Brass Band together with Voices
of Hope, one of the region’s most celebrated choral ensembles. Acclaimed contemporary
composers Orlando Gough and Jessica Curry have created music for Carol Ann’s lyrics, while
Jonathan Bates has written a special prologue for brass band in homage to composer George
Butterworth, 2nd Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry, who died at the Somme.

CHAMPIONS
For fans of traditional brass music The Fairey Brass
Band needs no introduction. They have
been National Champions of Great Britain nine
times, and have had numerous victories at the
European Championships, the All England Maste
rs and the English Nationals. They were also
winners of the BBC ‘Best of Brass’ and Granada ‘Band
of the Year’ titles.
No strangers to TV, they have provided music for
shows such as BBC2’s ‘Great Pottery Throw
Down’ and featured on Sky Arts ‘Brass Band Wond
erland’.
This distinguished band will bring the very best
of traditional brass music
to Gala theatre as a fitting close to the 2016 progra
