JULY — SEPTEMBER 2013
VALENCIA LAKES “SPRINGS” INTO SUMMER!
T
he 3rd quarter at Valencia Lakes was one of the most exciting and entertaining than
h
ever before. The first weekend in April gave a high benchmark for our activities
program as the talent from the residents took the stage and dazzled the audience
of over 450. We finished off the big show season this quarter and we also sold out if
o
several programs including the Caribbean part which featured a steel drum band, a
feast
feas
fe
as of Caribbean style food and capped off with a dance floor packed on all sides.
May
M features many dances, parties, and several lifelong learning programs. However,
the
the most anticipated event of the year was the Memorial Day Celebration. With several
years
yeaa in the making, the secondary recreation site was now open. The event highlight
ye
the
th new offerings including the dog park, garden, RV park, softball field and the memorial
park.
pa The VLMVC prepared a beautiful dedication fin the morning. Following this was the
softball
game which had over 200 spectators and 45 players. The other sports games
s
so
ended beautifully as the weather cooperated as the residents battled
it out. The bistro served almost 600 lunches that was sponsored by
GL homes.
The following weekend was also highly engaging as we offered
the first ever Valencia Midway in the afternoon and the Valencia
Du Soleil in the evening. The midway featured 12 carnival games, a
dunk tank, magician, jugglers, and live entertainment. The evening
show was put together by the local talent from the Ringling museum
which was comprised of 10 circus style performances. June also
offered the start of the summer concert series, Aquapoolooza. We
would like to thank everyone who made the past three months both
amazing and memorable.

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR 2013
HALLOWEEN PARTY — OCT 26
NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY — DEC 31
OUR NEW CIRCLE OF HONOR
Valencia Lakes dedicated a Veterans Memorial Park Circle of
Honor on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2013. The was presented
to Marisa Lufkin, GL Homes Project Manager/VP. GL Homes took
financial responsibility for the project and worked with the club to
erect their first-ever memorial park.
The day started with Ron Gallops
“flying thru” the streets of VL with
his street-legal miniature fighter jet.
Residents were pre-warned of the
event so no one had any heart issues
seeing it blast down the otherwise
quiet streets.
Mrs. Lufkin bestowed ownership
of the memorial park to the VLMVC,
Inc., which was gratefully accepted by President Fazio. Next the Color
Guard presented and posted the colors along with club membership
and residents raising the five service flags with the American flag and
POW/MIA. The Valencia Lakes Singers led the over 300 attendees in
singing of the National Anthem.
The Department of Army gave special permission to Lieutenant
Colonel Sebastian Jolly, Washington, D.C. to travel to Wimauma to
give his moving The Meaning of Memorial Day speech. LTC Jolly’s
father introduced his son as only a father could while expressing his
love and affection for a highly decorated son. President Fazio and
LTC Jolly then laid a wreath at the entrance to the Circle of Honor.
Purple Heart Vietnam Veteran helicopter pilot, Captain Adams
gave the heartfelt closing remarks. He asked those in attendance who
commanded or lost comrades in battle to stand and be recognized
adding another moving moment to our fallen heroes.
The remainder of the day was spent enjoying hot dogs and hamburgers
while watching a softball game at the new second recreation area.
VL residents know and enjoy the lifestyle of living in a great adult
retirement community. Even more so, they know the true meaning
of Memorial Day and salute all veterans past, present and future.

ELMIRA’S WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
The Valencia Lakes Friends of Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary
(VL FEWS), a new club started in April, has been BEARy
busy. Diamond Bay Drive resident Patrick Gordon, founder
of the club and Denise Padgett, president of VL FEWS and
long time volunteer at the sanctuary introduced the Club with
a presentation to members of The Women’s Club and offered
members a special tour of the sanctuary. On a hot Friday,
over 50 women from The Women’s Club took the short drive to
the sanctuary. That tour was a howling success and produced
volunteers and a major donation for the Sanctuary. Then, the
FEWS team decided to quickly introduce the Club to the rest of
the community. The Valencia Lakes Community was invited to
its own tour of Elmira’s in May. Thank you all for attending and
your donations! Anyone interested in learning more about the
club, donating or volunteering, please contact: Denise Padgett
(813) 260-3983 or Patrick Gordon (813) 419-4749.
2013 GRADUATES OF INTRODUCTION
TO CLAY
This May, nine residents attended a four session Introduction
to Hand Building in Clay, sponsored by the Clay Club. Most
participants had never worked in clay before but learned quickly
and produced masterpieces.
Welcoming everyone on the first day were pieces of rolled clay.
From there students decided what to make out the piece of clay.
Options included a fish tile, a platter, or a candle luminary. It
took several minutes for creativity to find its way to the surface,
but once out the fun began. No two pieces came out alike,
although everyone used the same templates for the items.
The group had a laugh when they realized all the fish were
swimming in the same direction.
The fun and success of this session has the Clay Club considering
offering the class in the fall.
Front—Michelle Ciechna, Jeanne Laffer, Joyce Gordon (Instructor).
Rear—Rose Fretoloso, Merle Berg, Louise Joly, Cathy Foss, Denise
Stickney, Robert Berg. Camera Shy—Fran Daigle and instructors
Rick Wilds, Mary Davis, and Joyce Nelson.
VALENCIA LAKES WOMEN’S CLUB
VALENCIA LAKES WEST GARDEN CLUB
The Women’s Club has been busy this quarter with successful
fund raising events.
On May 1, the quilters went to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and
donated 20 pounds of soda can tabs for their recycling program
and 100 pillow cases for the many children that are in need of
their services. On May 8, the quilters went to the VA hospital
and donated 25 lap quilts to veterans in their spinal column
unit. The Cooks Monday Out has also been quite successful. On
May 10, the club had its 4th annual fashion show which was
attended by 119 members and guests. The funds raised from this
event will be used for next year’s scholarship awards. On May
18, at the general meeting, $1500.00 scholarships were awarded
to two very worthy seniors from Lennard High School.
The club president, Patty Hibsher, says “many wonderful
social and charitable events are being planned for the fall and
into next spring. Our VP of charities and fund raising likes to
say, ‘We put the fun in FUNDRAISING.’ Thank you to our board
and all the volunteers that help us in striving to help others.”
It has been a very busy month for the Garden Club. On
May 16th a group of Residents took a trip to Orchid Mania in
Myakka City. A good day was had by all and a lot of money
was well spent.
On May 27th the Garden Plots were
re officially
handed over to the Garden Club. What a
wonderful addition to our Community. There
are 56 plots in total all have individual
idual
irrigation, four of which are raised. The shed
has been fitted with individual lockerss
and various tools. The outside gazebo
has two sinks and a picnic table;
there is also a potting table outside.
The Board of the Garden Club would
like to thank GL Homes in particular
Marisa Lufkin and David Schmidt..
We would also like to thank Michael
ael
Amos from Mainscape who has done a great job
with the irrigation. Happy Gardening!

Boston Marathon 2013:
View from a Runner
By Paula Norman
© Associated Press
On April 15, 2013, I was exceedingly grateful
to be running my first Boston Marathon that
I had qualified for a year earlier. The 26.2 mile
journey from Hopkinton to Boylston Street
began with a moment of silence at the start
line for the Newtown victims, then passed
TJ’s Food and Spirits in Ashland blaring
Van Halen’s “Running with the Devil” to
the pristine Natick community spectators offering orange slices
and wet towels through the Wellesley Girl’s College scream tunnel
to the unforgettable Boston College Student’s post-Newton Hills
encouragement and cups of beer, to the myriad of 500,000 legendary
spectators all along the route shouting words of inspiration and
eager for a high-five.
I crossed the finish line on Boylston Street at 2:03 P.M., with a
finishing time of 3:38:34 — approximately 45 minutes before the two
bombs exploded adjacent to the finish line, killing three spectators
and severely injuring hundreds more. I’m grieved, angry and in
disbelief that evil would invade such a global event of athlete and
spectator camaraderie, truly evidenced by the unselfish acts of
law enforcement officials, firefighters, medical personnel, military
veterans, runners and spectators alike who displayed individual
deeds of heroism and grace in assisting those injured in the attack.
The ultimate dream of qualifying for the Boston Marathon will
not fade as marathoners are a resilient lot with a formidable and
courageous nature. My prayers and foremost concerns are for the
bombing victims and their families, but I also celebrate the spectators
who unselfishly sacrifice their free time to support the runners simply
for the innocent love of the sport. Next year, on Patriot’s Day, I plan to
run the 118th Boston Marathon in support of all the “Boston Strong”.
