What follows is not meant to be funny. Nor is it meant to be disrespectful. It is meant to help us to “ponder,” to truly
reflect on one of the most important actions we, as Christian Catholics, do.
The Eucharist, like all the great mysteries of our faith, is not something that we can rationally explain. How can Jesus,
how can God be contained in what appears to be a small wafer of bread? That is our belief, our strong belief, that
Jesus is truly present on the altar in the bread and wine we offer. Even more overwhelming is the thought that once we
have received Jesus in Holy Communion, we become tabernacles with the Lord present in our very selves. That is
what makes Catholics Catholic. Take away the Eucharist and we are just like everyone else.
Each of us is baptized into the priesthood of Jesus Christ, and one of the ways in which ordinary baptized Catholics
exercise that priesthood is by receiving Holy Communion. That is the exercise of a power that we have from Christ
himself. It is an act of worship. We come with devotion, with humility, with reverence and respect as we approach the
altar. That word, “reverence,” is what some people complain about in our modern liturgy. Many say that since the
vernacular, the language of the people, became part of the Mass after the Vatican Council II, the sense of awe and
reverence, the mystery, somehow disappeared from the Mass. It did not; it is still a mystery.
There are now two ways, two options, in which Communion is received in the Church. We receive either in the hand
or on the tongue. The priest, deacon or Extraordinary Minister of Communion holds up the host and says, “The Body
of Christ,” and the communicant answers “Amen,” an Aramaic word. It is actually pronounced “Ahmeen” and it
means “So be it,” “I agree,” “ I believe.” That is what our “Amen” means: “I honestly believe that when I receive
Holy Communion, it is truly the Body and Blood of Christ.” Yet there are many who say nothing at all or “thank you.”
We answer “Amen.”
No priest or person can dictate the way you should receive Communion. The priest cannot order you to receive on the
tongue or in the hand – that option is yours. I am upset when some of the young people tell me that their parents order
them to receive only on the tongue, telling their kids that to receive in the hand is a sin. That is certainly not true. In
fact, that is one of the “stupidest” things I have ever heard. Why would the Church encourage you to sin during our
most important prayer, the center of our lives?
We need to review how to receive Communion properly, in the most respectful way. If you are going to receive on the
tongue, your head should be held back slightly and erect. The tongue should come out of the bottom teeth, equal with
the bottom lip, so the Communion Minister has somewhere to place the host. Sometimes people come up their teeth
clenched or with the mouth open like a doughnut hole or with the lips about a sixteenth of an inch apart and you
wonder “How am I going to get our Lord into that mouth?”
Then there are the “snapping turtles,” those who close their mouths so quickly we are afraid that our finger(s) might be
cut off. Or the “plungers,” those who leap forward at the last minute. Or the ones who, at the last minute, bow their
heads in reverence and we end up with “Communion in the eye or nose.”
If you are going to receive in the hand, the best way is to put one hand down and put the other hand on top of it,
making, as it were, a “throne” for the Lord. When the minister says “the Body of Christ,” answer “Amen,” take a step
to the side to make way for the next communicant, and consume host. Communion should not be received “on the
run,” or carried back to your pew; the host should be placed in your mouth before you leave the area below the altar.
And like the “snapping turtle,” your hand should not close on the minister’s hand. Your hand should not touch the
finger(s) of the minister at all!
And please: do not come up with your hand open and your tongue part way out of your mouth.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Once the early Christians realized that
Christ’s coming in glory was delayed, there was a
need to provide for the governance and everyday
needs of the church. The various “orders” within
the church carried forward the apostles’ ministry,
but also allowed for a measure of creativity. The
sacrament we call “holy orders” evolved somewhat slowly. At first, it made sense for Christians
to use the forms they knew, adapting them to new
situations. Synagogues, for example, were administered by a board of “elders,” translated into
Greek as presbyteros. We know from the Acts of
the Apostles that a system of presbyters was a
normal feature of church life from earliest days.
They stood in relationship to another order, that of
“overseers,” translated into Greek as episkopos,
giving us the English “bishops.” The bishop was
the shepherd, the faithful tender of the flock, one
who offered the Eucharist, forgave sins, and
maintained the bond of charity. Just as the deacons were the chief advisers for the charitable life
of the church, so were the presbyters meant to
advise the bishop on the spiritual life of the faithful. They were trusted advisers at first, not pastors
or priests as we understand those terms today.

Ninth Week of Ordinary Time
Daily Prayer This Week:
In the US, Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most
Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Luke's gospel
is the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. Most of the
rest of the world celebrates the Ninth Sunday of
Ordinary Time and Luke's Gospel tells us about
the healing of the Centurion's slave.
The pastoral letters set the tone. Writing to
Timothy, for example, Paul is eloquent in urging
him to be faithful - even to fan what he has learned
into a flame. This is a good context for us to return
to this season, fresh from the graces of Pentecost.
The gifts of the Spirit have been given us. We can
ignore them, bury them, or use them with very
little life and energy. We can also fan them into a
fire that gives courage and hope to others.
Tuesday is the Feast of the Visitation of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. Wednesday is the
Memorial of Saint Justin, Martyr. Friday is
the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of
Jesus and Saturday is the Memorial of the
Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin
Mary.
The first readings this week are from the pastoral
letters, The Second Letter of Peter and The
Second Letter to Timothy.
Mark's Gospel offers stories of how Jesus is in the
midst of a struggle with the religious leaders in
Jerusalem who do not like them. He tells them the
Parable of the tenant farmers, telling them that the
stone rejected by builders has become the cornerstone. They almost arrest him. His opponents try
to ensnare Jesus with question about the temple
tax, but he isn't trapped by them. When they question him about the resurrection, Jesus tells a
parable which teaches that God is the God of the
living. When asked which is the first commandment, Jesus gives two - highlighting the equal
importance of love of God and neighbor. Jesus is
both Son of David and Messiah and Lord. Jesus
warns of those who abuse widows on spiritual pretexts and tells his disciples to notice the widow who
gave from her poverty.
On Sunday, the Tenth Week of Ordinary
Time in the Luke's Gospel Jesus shows his
compassion for the Widow of Nain by raising her
son from the dead. “'Young man, I tell you, arise!'”
The dead man sat up and began to speak, and
Jesus gave him to his mother.”

As we wake each morning this week, and prepare
to be focused when we go about our daily tasks, we
can ask the Spirit of Jesus to “enkindle within us
the fire of your love.” Each day, we can be more
and more concrete about where we need help,
grace, “fire” to heal and gather others together and
be a source of unity and peace which simply aren't
a part of the “world's way” of doing things.
Jesus faced terrible conflict in his final days on this
earth. That's consoling for us who experience
conflict in our day to day experience. This week,
let's ask the Spirit to be with us in the difficult
times we face. Let's ask that we might not surrender our peace. Let's ask that we be able to trust our
Lord when we are asked to love others and give up
“my way” of doing things, loving God and our
neighbor equally.
As we give
thanks
each
night, we
celebrate
the love of
the
Trinity with us in
the reality
of our
lives.

Jubilee Year of
Mercy
May 29, 2016
Solemnity of the Most
Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Lectionary’s
Year of Luke presents a Gospel in which Jesus, who has
welcomed, taught, healed, and shown God’s mercy to the
multitude, refuses the Twelve’s demand to dismiss the
crowd before him. Instead, he says, “Give them some
food yourselves” (Luke 9:13). In Jesus’ hands, what little
the Twelve has feeds five thousand (“men,” and probably
as many women and children), leaving twelve baskets so
the Twelve can continue Jesus’ ministry of mercy. Pope
Francis has asked how we celebrate and live the Eucharist. Do we keep it to ourselves? Or do we “commune”
not only with Jesus but with the multitude whom Jesus
has given us to cherish? Entrusted to Jesus and shared
with others, our limited resources can go a long way.
Recognizing Jesus in the Eucharist demands that we recognize Jesus also in the hungry crowd. Adoring Jesus
present in the Eucharist requires that we serve Jesus present in our neighbor.

St. Fabian Parish offers a blessing for expectant
mothers, fathers and their unborn children,
immediately following the 9:30 a.m. Mass and
we’ll meet in the Chapel. The blessing is given to
strengthen mothers & fathers during the time of
waiting and to pray for the health and safe delivery
of their child. This blessing may be received
monthly throughout the pregnancy.

we thank God that they did! And as they continue to
do that, let us always keep them in our
prayers...ALWAYS!
Today is the Feast of “The Most Holy Body and
Blood of Christ.” In place of my sharing of the
Gospel from Luke, I would like to relay to you this
story by Archbishop Sheen, which was in a devotional that Janet & I read this past Easter season. I
felt it was most appropriate for this Feast.
On the day of his ordination as a priest, Fulton J.
Sheen promised to spend an hour a day in adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament. Years later, when he was
asked why, he told the following story.
When Communists took over China, they began
destroying Christian images and holy places. After
arresting one Catholic priest, they entered his
church where they hurled a ciborium full of
consecrated hosts to the floor, scattering the hosts
everywhere.
A 10-year-old girl was praying inside the church
when the soldiers entered the building. She was
horrified by the soldiers’ desecration. After they left,
she reverently bent down and picked up one of the
hosts with her tongue. She continued to do this for
32 consecutive days, the number of hosts that had
been thrown to the ground. On the night when she
returned to receive the last host, a soldier saw her
enter the church and fatally shot her.
After the imprisoned pastor was released, he
came to the United States and began to tell the story.
One of those who heard his account was Archbishop
Sheen, who vowed to make his own Eucharistic
Adoration, in honor of the little Chinese girl.
If the little girl could give her life for the
Eucharist, he said, he could spend at least an hour
each day in front of the Blessed Sacrament.
In July 2012, Archbishop Sheen was declared
venerable, a step on the path to sainthood.
