The capital of Friesland, start and finish of the
Frisian Eleven Towns race, city of the OranjeNassaus and Cultural Capital of Europe 2018:
that’s Leeuwarden! A city of quirky little shops,
fascinating museums, spectacular events
and a historic city centre with more than 800
monuments and exceptional modern architecture.
Experience
On and beside the water
Discover the city with a novel city walk or by water. Let yourself

be carried along the city’s canals in a Frisian flat boat, or just
rent a sloop and grab an oar yourself. Will you be arriving in your
own boat? You can moor your boat right in the heart of the city,
in the Prinsentuin that doubles both as a pleasure boat harbour
Vorstelijke binnenstad
and as the city park. During the summer, all the canals in the
city are lined with cosy outdoor cafés. Do you prefer a bird’s eye
Leeuwarden was a royal residence at one time: the city of the
Frisian stadholders. There are still numerous monuments to
remind us of those days: The Stadhouderlijk Hof Palace, the
Princessehof, the crypt in the Grote Kerk and the former pleasure
garden of the Nassau family, the Prinsentuin. The Frisian Nassaus
have given Leeuwarden a dash of regal splendour. Discover this
for yourself by taking the Traces of the Nassaus ‘Sporen van de
Nassaus’ city walk.
view? You can go up Leeuwarden’s very own leaning tower, the
16th Century Oldehove, between April and October. Would you
rather take the elevator? Try visiting the Achmea tower. Every
second Saturday in the month you can admire the city and its
surroundings from a height of 114 metres. Find relaxation in the
Aqua Zoo Friesland. This aquatic world of animals is just outside
the city, surrounded by nature.
Culture
Many-sided and adventurous:
that’s Leeuwarden
The city does not only contain many cultural and historic riches,
but is also a treasure trove of modern culture. In the last three
years, two of its museums have won the annual museum prize: The
Natuurmuseum Fryslân and the Fries Museum. There are plans for
large-scale exhibitions here dedicated to Alma Tadema, Mata Hari
and M.C. Escher. The Ceramics museum Princessehof is housed in
the former city palace and birthplace of Escher.
We should also mention the fascinating small museums such as the
nostalgic Grutterswinkel and the Beerenburg museum.
In addition to the museums, the museum harbour and the art
galleries, the city is host to a veritable pageant of theatre and music.
The city’s events calendar could only be provided by a capital city:
prestigious, spirited and unashamedly high profile.
