2014 05 - Rusty Iron Rally
NEWSLETTER OF THE MID NORTH COAST MACHINERY RESTORATION CLUB INC. Promoting help and friendship among fellow restorers May 2012 WWW.RUSTYIRONRALLY.COM 2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Jim Cameron Hi Everyone, Surprise, surprise it rained at the Macksville show. On Thursday Mal Cameron and I had a look at the showground, the show committee asked if we would like to move down behind our shed as this would give us a much larger area and a drier area. Being the 100th show a large area was what we were looking for, with the number of members that said they were attending. What looked good on Thursday did not look that way on Saturday, but neither did the other area we were allocated. I feel for the Show committee; they have had a number of years that have been very wet, it could easily have been us, and it still could be. There will be ongoing discussion with the show committee to see if we move to that area on a permanent basis. Don’t forget that there is no general meeting this month (May) . Coffs harbour Show committee is still looking for any of our people that can go to their show, just roll up to the gate there will be passes there. The Rally committee will soon be looking for people to help in all areas at this year’s Rally. If you have not been asked yet, please put your hand up, even if is only for an hour. We have members who wish to organise Tractor Treks in two areas, Dorrigo and South West of Grafton both have been told to co-ordinate with Syd Ramsay, our club’s Tractor Trek Coordinator, both promise to be over some very good trekking country. Until next time. Bye for now. Jim Cameron This WW2 vintage V12 Hall Scott marine engine was on display at the Campbelltown Steam Museum’s Open Day, back in October 2010. It has 5.75” bore x 7” stroke, for 35.6 litres capacity, single overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers. Quite an advanced engine for its day, and was used in “Fairmile” launches. The company also made aero engines, railcars and buses. They were taken over ,eventually, by Hercules Engine Co. and disappeared in 1960. Front Cover What do you do when your country is at war and the Army desperately needs a 400 to 500hp engine for its Tanks ? Read what Chrysler came up with in 1941 on page 10. 2 3 My Baby has gone to a new home ! Sob, sob FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK -by Rob Hill Well by the time you all get this through the post , I will be packing my bag ready for the Toowoomba Trip. I will be travelling up from Sydney, via New England Hwy, stopping overnight at Tamworth, so I will catch up with the others at the Motel in Toowoomba. Should be a good visit, look for photos in the next Flywheel. I had an email from Doug Gordon from the South Coast Restoration Society QLD. One of their members wanted to contact Mal Cameron, but there were two different phone numbers listed for Mal in the Guide (below). That mistake has been printed every month since I included the Vehicle Inspectors way back in April 2011, and no-one had noticed, not even the Editor (but he’s as blind as a bat, anyway). Thanks go to Syd and Jill Ramsay for sending through their report on the Kendall Tractor Trek…...and I didn’t even have to ask them ! Thanks, it makes putting together the Flywheel so much easier. And now the really big news…….our New Website Is up and running. Those on the Internet can check it out by typing in http://rustyironrally.com/ and that should take you straight to it. When you have our website home page up , then add it to “your favourites” so you can go back to it easily. Over the next few weeks, I will be adding lots more photos, old Flywheels, all sorts of stuff onto the site; I might even run a demo / instruction day on how to use your computer, if wanted. But keep in mind, I am NOT an expert ! We have been looking at booking a holiday house for a week down at Lorne in Victoria. My wife is rostered for hols starting 21st June, after our June meeting, and I have just noticed that the Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club (owners of “Big Foot” Walking Dragline) will be having an open day on the 24th June. Hasn’t that worked out well. And she is SO looking forward to spending all day there, too. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about. For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but 1 day the little old woman got very sick & the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box & took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two knitted dolls and a stack of money totalling $95,000. He asked her about the contents. ‘When we were to be married,' she said, 'my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and knit a doll.' 4 5 For Sale • • • • • • MNCMRC Club T-shirts, Bumper stickers, Rally Badges, Hat badges, Cloth badges, Stubbie holders, Key rings. She had only been angry with him 2 times in all those years of living & loving. He almost burst with happiness. 'Honey,' he said, 'that explains the dolls, but what about all this money? Where did it come from?' 'Oh,' she said, 'that's the money I made from selling all the other dolls.' 5 6 The Kendall Tractor Trek from Syd and Jill Ramsay Saturday 31st March, 7 tractors gathered at the Kendall showground. Ian Steele - Ferguson TED 20; David Spokes – petrol MF35; Tara Davies – industrial MF35; Arthur Davies – Syd’s TEA 20; Allan Cavanagh – MF35; Keith and Reg Dark (shared) - petrol MF35; Syd Ramsay – Fiat 513R; Cliff Warburton in his Land Cruiser as backup and meal van. After a lovely breakfast of egg and bacon rolls and a cup of tea or coffee served by the Camden Haven Show Society, we were on the road by 8.45am, heading through Kendall along Logans Crossing Rd and left on the Old Pacific Highway into Herons Creek before turning left onto Bulls Ground Road. Travelling for some distance we then turned left onto Blackbutt Road. When we came to the next intersection I waited for the others to catch up. Once we were gathered I told them we were only 10 minutes to morning tea and led the group on again but after some time I began to wonder if I was on the right road. It soon became evident that we weren’t and we were nowhere near where our morning tea stop was. What the heck! We decided we would have morning tea here anyway. Setting off after morning tea, it soon became obvious we were wrong again. I came upon a sign saying Hazard Ahead and very soon around the corner I was to find out what it was. During the resent heavy rains the bank above the road had slipped bringing down a large tree across the road. It was slung across the road but being reasonably high we managed to drive all tractors and the 4WD under it. We eventually ended up on the road we were supposed to be on and headed down the hill into Swans Crossing for lunch. After lunch we headed east along Upsalls Creek Rd where we stopped for a look at the remains of the Longworth Logging Tramline. We then made a solid push for Kendall and a stop at the Kendall Town Green to look at the boiler from The Longworth ‘B Class Climax locomotive. From here it was back to the showground to relax and shower before dinner. Dinner was served at 6.00pm and we sat down to a terrific 2 course meal again catered by the Show Society. We called it a night at 8.00PM. Sunday 1st April 7 tractors again to start the morning and this time Cliff Warburton driving Syd’s International and Jill Ramsay in the Nissan Patrol as back up and meal van. After breakfast of toast, bacon and eggs we were on the road at 9.00am travelling along Batar Creek Road and then onto Western Boundary Road until we came to Big Fella Gum. Here we parked the tractors and walked up into the bush to view this big Blackbutt tree. This proved somewhat disappointing as the track to the tree had become overgrown through the years and all we saw was the very top of the 6 7 tree and quite a few leaches causing a few squeals from Tara. So, back to the tractors to continue on. With myself leading we were on our way to the next turn off, this being to the left onto Mumfords Road. Waiting for the others to catch up I spotted Ian Steele driving up to me waving his arms like a madman. He told me I had the keys to the Nissan so Jill was still back at the big gum tree. I then had to turn back and as quick as I could on the Fiat and get back to Jill to give her the keys. David Spokes and Allan Cavanagh were waiting with her when I arrived. Once Jill had the keys we were on our way again but I have a feeling the fellas will never let me live that one down. Someone suggested marriage counseling. Once I was back up the front it was then onto Bird Tree via Grey Gum Road where we had our morning tea break and were entertained by Allan Cavanagh’s “American” stories. (God dammit!). We then walked to the other huge tree called Beneroon. Alan’s Opinion of this tree, because it wasn’t sound as a saw log, was that it was like a railway cup of tea, “Big and weak.” From here we made our way to the Old Lookout Road and enjoyed the vista over Batar, Kendall and Kew and then made our way back to the main road. I was traveling pretty well when I came around the corner and right in front coming straight at me was a near new Nissan Navara. All I could do was slam on the brakes and the Fiat came to a sliding stop. The poor family in the ute must have thought a bull elephant in musk was coming out of the bush. I secured the tractor, climbed down to apologize to them, and warn them that there were another 6 tractors and a 4WD coming behind. They backed up to let us through. We were then on the final leg of the trek, down Stoney Creek Road, right onto Batar Creek Road and back to the showground for lunch. We had lunch at 12.30pm and by 2.00pm all tractors were loaded and heading home. I had 1 small problem; I had 3 tractors to get home. Jill brought me back for each 1 and by 4.00pm I had the shed swept and the tractors back in their bays. Everyone reported they had really enjoyed the trek and there will definitely be another one. 7 8 TOOWOOMBA VISIT latest from John Robinson We are all to meet at the Comfort Inn Grammar View Motel - 39 Margaret Street, Toowoomba - (07) 4638-3366 at 8.00am on Saturday morning 19/5/12 and then we will all proceed to Ab Brimblecombe's collection. Historic Vehicle Registration in NSW At the risk of overdoing this subject, it is important for members to understand the need to renew your club membership on time. Not only is your insurance dependant on current membership, for those with Historic registration on their tractors, trucks, cars etc., it is an offence to drive any of these vehicles on a public road without current club membership and without the club’s Vehicle Movement Registrar (Peter Murden) having been advised. A member can be booked for “driving without registration”, “driving uninsured” and “number plates calculated to deceive” (three separate offences totalling well over one thousand dollars fine) if that member cannot prove on the spot to a policeman that the member is currently financial in the club nominated for registration. This means you must carry your club membership card and be able to provide proof that you are on a club event and that your club registrar knows you are on this event. Don’t get caught out ! 8 9 Ploughing Day at Pade’s Farm Valla John Robbo takes all the “kids” for a ride on 4th March 2012 Just as well Rob Keough has his helpers...hey All that ploughing was thirsty work Hi Ho Silver, (or should that be Grey) A perfect end to a perfect day…... Thanks, Brian and Anne. And Thanks, Donna Pell for all the photos. 9 10 Interesting Engines 5 (An occasional series) by Rob Hill Some time ago, Rod English sent me some info on an unusual engine developed through necessity during World War 2. So, I jumped on the Internet to try and find out more about it. The Chrysler A57 Multibank engine was developed in 1941 to replace the converted radial aircraft engines used in the US Army medium tanks up to that time. While Ford developed a V8 version of its large V12 aeroplane engine, Chrysler came up with something a bit different. The Chrysler cars at that time used a 6 cylinder 4.1 litre, side valve engine, which was very reliable and all the manufacturing tooling already existed. But at only 120hp it was far too small. However, if they multi-banked it they could achieve the horsepower required, and eliminate two years development time for a totally new engine. As conceived, the engine used five of the 6 cylinder subengines, arranged around a central casting, which housed a central output shaft and gearing from each of the five crankshafts. Prototype trials indicated problems with the location of the 5 carburettors and the 5 water pumps. The carb’s were moved to all be at the same level, thus also making linkages simpler, and one large central water pump solved the problems there. The distributors had already been moved form the middle of each engine to the end of the camshafts. Of course, dry sump lubrication was also used. It reliably produced 470hp at 2400rpm, for an all up weight, including radiator, fan, and clutch of 2.3 tons. In adverts at the time, Chrysler claimed that even if two banks of the engine were damaged, then the remaining 3 would still be able to move the Tank back to base. The M4A4 Tank, into which this engine was fitted, was mostly supplied to Britain under LendLease arrangements, the USA forces preferring the M4A3 with a more conventional, but special, V8 engine. “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” 10 11 BROOKLANA TRACTOR TREK – JULY 7TH 2012 The ‘trekkers” will meet outside Stan Cork Machinery in Dorrigo at 8.15am on Saturday 7th July. Locked storage will be available at the Men’s Shed overnight on both Friday and Saturday. The Trek leaves Dorrigo at 8.30 and travels via Megan to the Davies family home at Brooklana, where Morning Tea will be served. Then we will have a lovely journey across country where we stop for lunch at the Ulong Shop. After lunch, a steady run via Cascades and Briggsvale back to Dorrigo. This is a comfortable distance through beautiful countryside. The North Dorrigo Restaurant is booked for dinner at 6.30 on Saturday evening, and on Sunday morning there is to be a short run through Dome Road to the Never, Never Picnic area for Morning Tea. Dispersal will be in Dorrigo at midday, or lunch at your own arrangement. Of the costs, $45 includes Saturday Morning Tea, Saturday lunch and Saturday night dinner. Payment to be made on the day, BUT please lift the phone and let Arthur or Alan know who is actually coming. If you don’t book by July 2nd, we can’t accommodate you. Plenty of accommodation is available in Dorrigo – all you need to do is make a couple of phone calls and turn up with a tractor for a good weekend! Arthur Davies can be contacted on 6654 5281 and Alan Jarrett on 6657 2019 Give thought to how good the last two Dorrigo Tractor Treks have been – don’t miss this one! Snapped by Syd and Jill Ramsay from the Kendall / Bago road bridge. The Engine is one of only 4 class survivors. Built from 1892 as ‘P’ class, latter became 32 class. 3237 belongs to the Lachlan Valley Railway at Cowra NSW. There are 2 static locos at Thirlmere, and one restored ( at a reputed $1 million) at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. 11 12 Minutes of the Meeting of the Mid North Coast Machinery Restoration Club Inc. held at the Mal Cameron Shed, Macksville on Sunday 15th April, 2012. The Meeting opened at 1.00pm with President Jim Cameron in the chair. Jim introduced Mr Mike Ettelson from the Macksville Sow Committee who spoke on the plans for the Show Committee to buy back the Showground from the Council. The committee’s plans include bitumen on the internal roads, new signage, improve toilets, also they have already purchased some portable toilets which we can use for the Rally. Mike Ettelson gave the background to the desire of the Committee to re-aquire the Showground from the Nambucca Council to secure it against any future proposal for council amalgamation. Regardless, he stated that John Harris (of the Showground Committee) has a copy of letter stating that our club has secure tenancy of our club shed for as long as we want. In reply to a question from John Robinson re maintenance of new shower block, Mike Ettelson indicated that they would be responsible for any maintenance required. Also our club would continue to occupy our shed rent free, as is the present case. Mike asked for a good display at, and prior to, the upcoming 100th Macksville Show. Mike Ettleson thanked the members, and departed at 1-30pm, and the club meeting got underway. Members present: 22 as per attendance book, 20 voting.
