MORTON SUNDOUR FABRICS LTD.
Morton Sundour Fabrics Ltd. was founded in 1914 as a
successor to the Arts and Crafts textile firm Alexander Morton
and Co. Like its parent company, Morton Sundour became
famous for blending a high degree of artistic skill with technical
inventiveness. The important legacy of its design work, in
particular that of its subsidiary Edinburgh Weavers, is central to
the history of British fabric manufacturing. The company was
run by James Morton, whose signature appears in a number of
items.

(1928-2009)
In the 1950s and early 1960s, Nelson designed models and
other furnishings for several aeroplane companies, including
TWA and BOAC. He went on to specialize in lighting design,
and his firm Architectural Lighting Ltd became the leader in
the field. He also designed for Conran, Habitat and Heals
among others.

182 NELSON Peter: Spencers Wood Congregational
Church Youth Club (near Reading)
1961 [12397] Two brightly coloured designs in pencil, ink and
watercolour showing the club from different angles. With two
tracings in ink and a small collection of newspaper articles. Each
drawing measures 770x520mm. Signed and dated 6-4-61. The
club was converted by Nelson from the garage of the church’s
Manse House. Its small kitchen, known as the ‘galley’, was based
on Nelson’s experience as a designer in the aeroplane industry.
The designs are interesting for their economical use of space
and their decorative schemes, which are aimed at the emerging
demographic of the ‘teenager’. Nelson lived in the village and
this project - carried out in conjunction with the teenagers shows his involvement with the local community.
