Morton Sundour Fabrics Ltd. was founded in 1914 as a successor to the Arts and Crafts textile firm Alexander Morton and Co. Like its parent company, Morton Sundour became famous for blending a high degree of artistic skill with technical inventiveness. The important legacy of its design work, in particular that of its subsidiary Edinburgh Weavers, is central to the history of British fabric manufacturing. This famous synthetic colour was developed by Sir James Morton’s experimental design unit, Scottish Dyes Co. and this book cloth was first used for Bernard Shaw’s collected works in 1930. With considerable information on Alexander Morton and Sir James Morton, and some description of the lives of Alastair Morton and Commander R.S.E, Hannay. With information on C.F.A. Voysey, John Ruskin, William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement, the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society, book-binding cloth, Liberty and Co., and numerous anecdotes of period artists including members of the Glasgow School and Ben Nicholson. Also interesting for its account of the firm’s development from hand-weaving to large scale industrial production. All volumes have a little wear to head and base of spine and corners, and the frontis of vol. 8 is becoming detached. Steel, Brass and Copper embossing stamp, c.65mm diameter. In two parts, with an attractive thistle design strongly suggestive of Voysey’s involvement. The stamp itself is marked ‘Cunningrave’ and ‘Glasgow’. Scottish Dyers & Printers Ltd was a subsidiary of Morton Sundour, based at the Midlothian dye-works at Slateford, near Edinburgh. 2) Scottish Folk Fabrics, Ltd. Steel and copper embossing stamp, 40mm diameter. In two parts, no other markings. Scottish Folk Fabrics was an early incarnation of the high quality experimental workshop which was to become Edinburgh Weavers in 1924. 3) J & B Morton Ltd. Lower part of an embossing stamp, copper and brass, c.65mm. Standing for ‘James and Beatrice, J. B. Morton Ltd was the holding company for the family’s shares in the firm. Presumably used in an embossing apparatus to mark stationary etc, these are lovely examples of design, showing that Morton’s aesthetic sense extended to his business as well as his products. The box in which the stamps are contained shows signs of wear - part of one side has been sawn away and it does not have a lid.£140.00 2 Processes, glossary and index’ x + 194pp, with 3 coloured and 7 b/w plates. £350.00 fep. Designed for those involved with the decorative arts and furniture makers, the first part of this volume provides a chronological overview of design, including a chapter on ‘American Industrial Art’. Its second half consists of examples of historically influenced fabric produced by the Cheney Brothers, illustrated in colour. Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1847) was a bibliophile and literary antiquarian. The Bibliographical Decameron, a series of dramatic discourses on book collecting,, first appeared in 1817. This is an extract, attractively printed on a private press, and focusing on the history of printers and their heraldic devices. With two tracings in ink and a small collection of newspaper articles. Each drawing measures 770x520mm. Signed and dated 6-4-61. The club was converted by Nelson from the garage of the church’s Manse House. Its small kitchen, known as the ‘galley’, was based on Nelson’s experience as a designer in the aeroplane industry. The designs are interesting for their economical use of space and their decorative schemes, which are aimed at the emerging demographic of the ‘teenager’.
