andel’s Hotel in Łódź, Poland ::
Dear Readers,
Major events are a good occasion for
deep reflection. This also applies to the
shift from the world of work into retirement. 2010 sees the end of my time as a
furnishing consultant at Halbmond. For
this reason the question has arisen many
times in the past few weeks: what in fact
accounts for the fascination with carpets? First and foremost for me is the
fact that carpets open up a world of experience: the wide variety of designs, the
varied materials and the interesting
projects mean new things can be discovered every day.
For ten years at Halbmond I oversaw
projects in many cities in the world. Among
my personal highlights was the andel's design hotel in the Polish city of Łódź, a real
showpiece for the hotel industry. This edition of The Carpet Magazine presents the
hotel to you and maybe it will encourage
you to go there for yourself.
I thank you all for the harmonious teamwork which has always been characterised by trust. Together we achieved ambitious aims and realised projects which
will bring joy for a long time to come.
I will take the memories of beautiful moments, lasting impressions and the joy
for what has been created with me into
retirement.
I wish you all the best and continued
success!
Yours,
Paul Houppert

special aura. Manchester in the UK is among these
special places, but also Łódź in Poland. Both cities can
look back on a past which was shaped by the textile
industry and today they are both impressive with their
equally inspiring creative flair. This is a good prerequisite for creating something masterful. Such as the
andel's hotel in Łódź – formerly a textile mill, today a
showpiece for the hotel industry. It is directly adjacent
to the manufaktura, the cultural centre of the city.

the carpet set into the
floor takes on the elliptical shape of the ceiling
and creates new accents
through its own playful
variation.
“Rooms appear larger through the clever selection of shapes
and colours. At andel's everything was different. Here, the
spacious dimensions presented unusual challenges.”
Paul Houppert, Head of Furnishings, Halbmond
In Łódź two renowned teams of architects transformed
the walls of a textile factory steeped in history into truly
luxurious accommodation. In doing so, the Polish-Austrian OP ARCHITEKTEN was responsible for the transformation of the historic structure and the London star architects Jestico + Whiles were responsible for the interior
design. With incredible dedication and ambitious ideas
they created arguably one of the most unusual design
hotels in Europe.
For the clients and the architects one thing was clear:
behind the listed façade a large part of the interior structure was to remain. A comprehensive survey recorded
what was present and revealed an historic water tank for
putting out fires. It was the latest in fire prevention technology when it was brought from Manchester to Łódź.
Today this historic gem functions as a swimming pool.
Positioned on a sophisticated, original steel construction
and encased by a large expanse of glass, the pool floats
on the roof of the hotel and in the process projects above
the external facade by a few metres.
The central piece of the ceiling was completely removed
in the lobby and conference area as a creative element.
Thus an elliptical gap was created through which the
guest can look and comprehend the building in its impressive dimensions. In order to complete the breathtaking visual appearance, the carpet took on the elliptical
shape and this lends additional flair. In many parts an
individual solution had to be found for the floor covering.
Halbmond, the specialists in individual millimetre precision designs, produced a unique product – aligned to its
structural environment, function and usage.
The metamorphosis into a 4 star hotel has been without a
doubt successful: since its opening in May 2009 andel's
has collected international awards – for its architecture
and its achievements in the hotel industry.

DORMERO – Hotel am Theater, Plauen, Germany ::
Ambitious aims, down-to-earth realisation:
the design of the large-scale carpeting is
also characterised by the contrast between
tradition and the modern.
An Experiment
with Results
Philipp Veigele was 23 years old when he became Germany's youngest hotel manager.
In doing so, he not only took on responsibility for 60 employees, but also set himself a particular challenge: he had to prove that you could successfully run a four star hotel in a city
that was not at that time frequented very often. When you hear to whom Philipp Veigele
make this promise, the term “successful” comes into play: no lesser figure than Hans
Rudolf Wöhrl, founder of the largest German fashion company – and owner of DORMERO
in Plauen.
Today it has been established: the experiment has been
successful. More than that: Philipp Veigele has become
the owner of the hotel and in addition responsible for the
chain's second hotel in Nuremberg, which was conceived
according to the example of the DORMERO – Hotel am
Theater in Plauen. From the first day onwards the now
27-year-old managed the hotel with a breath of fresh air
and creative ideas, which also were incorporated into the
interior decoration. In doing so, he left no doubt that the
guest was placed at the very centre.

“The DORMERO follows an exciting dramaturgy: modern
design interplaying with rural shapes and details, a lively
bar with a great ambience and unusual events.”

“Our history shows what happens when a hotel reflects on what
its guests really want”, says the young businessman. “The design
of the hotel breaks the outdated patterns and does away with unnecessary extravagance. It pursues the needs of our guests. The
basic and the current needs, and maybe even the future ones. The
DORMERO is a hotel which supports life – in the form which guests
live it today”.
This philosophy can already be seen from the outside – by means of
the distinctive logo: the “M” in the name was designed in the style of
an opening door. In invites strangers to come inside and to become
guests who will be most welcome. In a hotel which has ensured a
place in the cultural centre of the city.

New Collection ::
Tiles & More:
A Perfect Concept
Tiles & More are not just more patterned tiles: 6 collections with a total of 30
designs, three delivery options and in different qualities offer the right solution for
everyone. Furthermore, numerous advantages come with the collection – footfall
sound insulation and flexible handling are just two of the special characteristics
of products which are coated with Easy Lift.
The new collections are available as standard tiles, individual modules and in broadloom – the outstanding
feature is that these tiles can be installed alongside the
broadloom with normal textile secondary backing without
the usual differences in thickness and colour! This forms
a unified whole which is perfectly matched to your building and your requirements. This is also true in regard to
the wear, as different surface qualities are available, of
course.
Tiles & More gives satisfaction everywhere where the
question of creative solutions, high quality and easy replaceability arises: in offices, restaurants, casinos and
in all other areas where a time and cost saving partial
replacement solution is possible. In addition, the Easy
Lift backing coating is environmentally friendly and sustainable:
It does not contain any substances which require explicit labelling, bitumen, PVC or solvents and therefore
at the time of disposal will not be a source of pollution.
It has received the GUT mark for its environmentally
friendly properties and has received the EPD mark from
the IBU.

The Splendour of Halbmond ::
The German Carpet Museum
Presents “130 Years of Halbmond”
Halbmond carpet factory's success story began in 1880 – and it's a story which has to be
told: in time for the anniversary, the German
Carpet Museum was opened in Voigtsberg
Castle this year. Exhibits, machines, pictures
and carpets from different epochs are on
display.
Particular emphasis is placed upon the special exhibition “130 Years of Halbmond”.
Among other things, not just the technical
but also the social aspects are portrayed and
which demonstrate the relationship between
company history and regional development.
Just as crucial to success in 1930
as today: dedicated employees.
It ran and ran: for almost 30 years this
punch card hammer machine from the
60's performed its duty.

The Letterkundig Museum Offers
Literature in All Dimensions
© Photographs: Mike Bink fotografie
Love letters, note books, diaries and novel manuscripts:
in the Letterkundig Museum in Den Haag it is all about
the diversity of the written word. As the national literary
museum of the Netherlands it unites works of more than
6,000 authors under one roof. Portraits of the writers and
personal possessions complete the collection. The oldest exhibits are from 1750 and the youngest are from the
present. Many pieces are stored in the comprehensive
archive, others can be seen in the permanent collection.
Since the latest renovation of the museum, works by
Halbmond can be found in all rooms at
Prins Willem-Alexanderhof. They underline the focus of the Letterkundig Museum
and frequently draw particular attention to
the written word.
A different type of literature: the carpet in the
Letterkundig Museum features an extract from
the literary road trip of the Museum Director, Aad
Meinderts. He visited one hundred graves of
famous authors.
