RACING REVIEW • ARABIAN RACING [by Véronique Briat] Clean sweep for Qatari horses in the Qatar Arabian World Cup French bred Arabians shine abroad Areej wins the Qatar Arabian World Cup. n 2011, they were 82 races in France for pure-bred Arabians, for over two Million euros in prize money (there were 75 races in 2010). These races were run from mid-February until the end of November on 20 different racecourses. They include 8 Group 1 PA, 7 Group 2 PA, 4 Group 3 PA and 4 Listed PA. I Kiss de Ghazal wins the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Juments. 66 It was a clean sweep of top seven places by Qatar in one of the most (if not the most) prestigious race for pure-bred Arabians : The Qatar Arabian World Cup on Arc Day. Al Shahania Stud took the top three slots in front of a packed house at Longchamp and Areej won the race, Aziz and Jaafer were second and third respectively. French trainer Alban de Mieulle lifted the President of the UAE Cup for a fourth consecutive year, thanks to the brilliant filly Raqiyah, who had already won this race last year. She went on to dead heat with Al Tair in the Doha Cup (Deauville) for her trainer who had the first three horses home in his care. Every few years in racing, a superstar is seen on the racecourse.Unbeaten in 9 races including the Breeders’ Challenge for 3 yo Fillies in 2010, Kiss de Ghazal (bred by Jean Cambon) is certainly one of them. She won three Group 1 and four Group 2 races for a total of €178,250 in prize money (€ 260,480 with the owners’ premiums). Her last race of the season, in the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Classic, proved to be the one too many but she is only four and one looks forward to seeing her racing next season. It was another very good year for French bred Arabians abroad. Seraphin du Paon lifted the President Cup and Kahayla Classic, No Risk Al Maury won in Dubai, England and Turkey and was the highest rated horse (128) at the end of the season. He has been retired and will stand in France in 2012 at Haras de l’Abbaye. Other Group 1 winners abroad were : Santhal, Nieshan, Sanagham, Kiss de Ghazal and Sahib du Clos. n Areej’s owners celebrate their victory. Winning connections of Kiss de Ghazal. RACING REVIEW • ARABIAN RACING [by Véronique Briat] Breeders’Challenge races he Breeders’ Challenge races were first run in Toulouse in 2004. Following the sponsorship of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, they were run in Longchamp in 2007 and became part of the Arc weekend in 2008. In 2011, they returned to Toulouse. These races should attain Group status in three years time providing the ratings of the runners meet the required standard. The four races attracted some very T good horses in what amounted to an end of season finale. Al Mamun Monlau, winner of the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr.1 PA), scored in the race for 3YO colts. Rakha won the race for 3YO Fillies. Burning Fancy, running for Athbah Stud Limited, won the Sprint. He previously finished 2nd in the Malazgirt Trophy (Gr.1 PA) back in September. Hilal Al Zamanfinished in second place in the Sprint. He was 2nd in the President of the UAE Cup (Gr.1 PA)at Saint-Cloud back in June. Gharraa scored in the Classic (generously sponsored by Shadwell), having previously finished 3rd to Kiss de Ghazal at Ascot in the President of the UAE Cup (Gr.1 PA) and at Longchamp in the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Juments (Gr.1 PA ). After racing AFAC held a cocktail party for its members which featured a draw to win free nominations to such popular stallions as Akim de Ducor, Amperor des Cedres, Azadi, Da Adios, Kerbella, Madjani, Murhib, Njewman, No Risk Al Maury and Our Machine. About 80 people attended this informal event and all seemed to enjoy their evening. Among the leading horses he has bred one remembers: Lahib (m. 2004 by Kairouan de Jos) winner of the Qatar French Arabian Breeders’ Cup 3YO Colts (Gr.1 PA) and the 2008 Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr.1 PA). Shadiyda (m. 2003 by Al Sakbe) winner of the Emirates Championship (Gr.1 PA), Prix d’Abu Dhabi (Gr.1 PA) and French Arabian Breeders’ Cup 3YO Colts (Gr.1 PA). Jarnin (g. 2003 by Akbar) winner of the Prix du Président des EAU (Gr.1 PA) and HH The President Cup (Gr.1 PA). Mizzna (f. 2002 by Akbar) winner of the National Day Cup St.(Gr.1 PA) (twice), Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr.1 PA), Hatta International St. (Gr.1 PA), Liwa Oasis (Gr.1 PA), Prix Nefta (Gr.2 PA), Al Ruwayah (Gr.2 PA), Prix Razzia III (Gr.3 PA). HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs in Abu Dhabi, is an accomplished endurance rider. He started breeding pure-bred Arabians in France in 1998 at what was then known as Haras de Clairefeuille in Normandy. He bought the farm in 2009 and renamed it Wathba Stud Farm. Today it is home to 5 stallions, 31 broodmares, 25 foals, 19 yearlings and 15 two-year-olds and is equipped with state of the art facilities. It is spread over 440 acres and is managed by Emmanuel Bodard. T Munjiz 70 RACING REVIEW • ARABIAN RACING Mahabb Martial Boisseuil, HH Sheikh Mansoor’s main advisor, recalls meeting him in the early 90’s after the successes of two horses he bred in the UAE – Akbar and Azihade. His role has since evolved and today, as racing manager, he reports to HH Sheikh Mansoor on the progress of his horses in training, which are spread among many French trainers, and he also advises him regarding matings. In 2011, the patience and involvement of HH Sheikh Mansoor have been rewarded. Two of the stallions standing at Wathba Stud Farm topped the List of Leading Sires of three-yearolds in France in order of prize money with their first crop. Munjiz with only 8 three year olds running in 2011 is the leading sire. The two colts Josco du Cayrou and Al Mamun Monlau are the stars of this crop, between them winning two of the three Group 1 races of the season for three-year-olds. Ghalib was also one to note when winning the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – Prix Chéri Bibi (Gr.2 PA) and placing in a Group 1 and Group 3. Munjiz is also the sire of the first three in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr.1 PA), who were all trained by Jean-François Bernard (he also trained the fourth horse Prince de l’Ardus). Mahabb’s star this year was Fazah, a filly who won the Prix Razzia III (Gr.3 PA) and Prix Nevada II (Gr.2 PA) and also finished second in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr.1 PA). Sardan, winner of three races from four starts, and Areem, one win and two seconds (including the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr.1 PA) from four starts, ensured Mahabb was close to Munjiz in terms of prize money at the end of the racing season. The other stallion one should point out is Azadi (Darike). With only four runners this year he is in third position on the sires’ list. Al Nachmiya was much the best of the four runners. She won her second start by an impressive 10L at Mont-de-Marsan and three weeks later she won the prestigious Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr.1 PA) at Saint-Cloud after changing owner the day before. Surely breeders should consider sending mares to Azadi next year. n LEADING SIRES OF 3YO IN FRANCE IN 2011 STALLION SIRE HORSES WINNERS RACES 1ST 1 - MUNJIZ KESBEROY 8 5 29 8 PLACES PRIZE MONEY 13 190,200 € 2 - MAHABB TAHAR DE CANDELON 13 7 51 11 30 179,400 € 3 - AZADI DARIKE 4 1 7 2 1 57,200 € 4 - DORMANE SAINT LAURENT 14 2 52 2 22 53,100 € 5 - KERBELLA KESBEROY 7 2 23 4 9 38,600 € 6 -DARWEESH AMER 7 1 22 1 12 35,750 € 7 - NIZAM AMER 3 1 4 1 1 32,500 € 8 - AKBAR DJELFOR 11 3 33 3 11 31,800 € 9 - PRINCE D'ORIENT MANGANATE 6 1 12 1 5 27,300 € 10 - AMER 3 0 3 0 2 25,000 € WAFI Source: France Galop 71
