Recently, I took my daughter to a local restaurant for a hamburger. Imagine my surprise when I looked up to see my
waitress, and saw a familiar face. While she patiently fielded my daughter’s multiple and somewhat unreasonable
requests, she told me about her life since homelessness. She is working, in a committed relationship and in an
apartment. While she faces continued financial challenges, she is both happy and healthy.
She thanked me over and over for the services she received at CHCT. I remember her distinctly because she faxed
many, many resumes and the only fax machine in the building is in my tiny and very crowded office. What she identified as being most helpful to her were our computers, our interview clothing room, our individualized voice mail and
financial assistance with her security deposit. Her time as a homeless person was relatively brief, but I am happy to
say that our assistance shortened that time considerably.
I often get asked why we offer so many basic services like food and clothing. Often the questioners are genuinely
curious, but sometimes they value self-reliance so highly that they genuinely believe it is better to not feed or
otherwise care for people that are homeless. The Carriage House Community Table explicitly believes that every
person functions better when their survival needs are met. By starting with basic needs, we can form a relationship
with hard-to-reach people and then start helping them in other ways.
It is very exciting for us as staff when a person uses those basic services as a bridge to greater health and self
sufficiency. We also recognize that each person that exits homelessness quickly saves the community a great deal
of expense. However, for me as an individual, I would say to look up to this particular woman’s smiling and
beautiful face was truly priceless.
There are never words quite eloquent enough to thank the Boulder community for its support, and this annual
report is just one effort at saying thank you. Please know how deeply heartfelt our thanks is, and that I speak for all
of the staff, Board, volunteers, and guests at the Carriage House when I tell you that we are proud and honored to
be supported by this community.
I am proud to be able to carry this young woman’s gratitude back to you, the people to whom it really belongs.

I never, ever, ever thought I could become homeless with no job, no money, destitute!
But that is exactly what happened to me!
After spending 90 days in Boulder County jail for a DUI, I emerge Dec. 14, 2004, with
no shelter, no job, car repossessed, and about $10 to my name. Because of my alcoholism, I became estranged from my family. Married, but separated from an abusive man, I really was alone.
My biggest obstacle to getting a job is that I am profoundly deaf. I wear a hearing aid but I have great difficulty with telephones. I read lips, so I have to be looking at you to understand what is being said.
When my time ran out at The Safehouse, I either couch-surfed, camped out or stayed at the Boulder
Shelter for the Homeless. I found out about the Carriage House. I started checking out resources there
to obtain housing and SSDI for my hearing disability and mental issues (bipolar and depression).
The Carriage House staff helped with phone calls and appointments, tokens for the bus, referrals for
dental work and to get my hearing aid fixed. I now have my own apartment and financial help from
SSDI.
My life has changed for the better, definitely -- never could have happened if I didn’t get sober! One of
the most wonderful things is that I am now at peace with my family, accepted with open arms!

I came to the Carriage House only about a week after I first went to the Boulder Shelter. I initially felt the place was
too small for all these people jostling and bumping into one another. No one had any elbowroom. There were only
four computers upstairs, and someone was, invariably, already on one when I got up there. The caseworkers didn’t
have a lot of time to talk or help with anything before someone would knock and come busting in. This became
highly annoying, and I often wondered how staff ever got anything done! They did though, to their enormous credit.
The Carriage House provided hot meals. You could get your mail there, take a shower, put on a fresh pair of socks, change your
shirt or pants, and get bus tokens. Three things really stood out. These people, no matter how busy they got, really cared about us.
People are just people, and sometimes tempers on both sides flared, but mostly they had an uncanny understanding of human nature.
Handling a multitude of mixed emotions from many races, and socioeconomic backgrounds all clamoring for attention is draining.
Secondly, CH continuously put programs in place to make things easier and to give hope and regain dignity and workplace skills, aptly
naming one HOPE. HOPE amazed me many times by pulling people together spiritually and emotionally. Some of my best friendships stemmed from those meetings.
Last, they pull the financial strings on my behalf, twice lining up situations that regained my identification. Without ID, you have no
real chance to land a job, and other programs require it too. Without ID, you might as well sit on a rock somewhere, because you’re
never going to climb back up again.
Because of Carriage House’s help and support, I got a telemarketing job, allowing me slowly to save for a car. I used that car to travel
to Illinois and take care of my mother who is dying of cancer. I use that $500 dollar car to go to meetings 45 minutes away, do odd
jobs on Craigslist, get groceries, and apply for jobs.
I’m grateful to the Carriage House for all their help and understanding during a time when hope was nearly non-existent, when jail
seemed a better solution than freezing to death, when I had lost faith in most of what I thought I knew, and coming to that place was
almost a daily ritual. Without the love and respect that was shown me; I’m not sure where I would have ended up.

our Staff
Joy Eckstine, Executive Director, has been working at the Carriage House since the fall of 2004. A licensed
clinical social worker and certified addictions counselor, she has worked extensively with the homeless and
addicts. She has received awards from the DA’s office and the local Rotary Club for her outstanding advocacy.
She also writes for www.change.org on national homelessness issues. She is the proud mother of two young
children. She loves reading mysteries, Colorado wildflower hikes, yoga and gardening.
Matthew ‘Rider’ Conway is a 37 year old expat from Chicago. He is an artist and
glass blower by trade. Started with Carriage House as a volunteer and never left. He also has
ties to the street community at various levels and brings good perspective.
Rider works as greeter for the Carriage House.
Vera Line started out as a volunteer at the Carriage House in December 2007. She now fills the position
of Director of Human Resources and is in charge of the administrative side of The Carriage House Community
Table. She holds a master’s degree in psychology from Saarland University, Germany and is currently pursuing
an education in accounting. Vera enjoys traveling, yoga, and good food.
Scott Medina has been director of Community Table dinner program since 1999, after leaving “the
corporate world” in search of more meaningful service work. An active musician, Scott also teaches music
classes and special events for preschool children throughout Boulder County, leads evenings of devotional
chanting and other spiritually-focused events, and has released several CDs of original music. In the spring of
2010, Scott took on the role of volunteer coordinator in addition to coordinating the dinners.
Emily Messina-Heim began working with the homeless in 1996 as a volunteer at a transitional
living shelter in Placentia, California. In 2010, she started volunteering at Carriage House Community Table,
and in January 2011 she was hired to fill the development director position. Emily has her bachelor’s in
literature and writing from Naropa University and is a mother of two children. She loves good wine and
watching documentaries.
Heather Pauze started working for The Carriage House Community Table in March 2008. She
worked as the greeter for 8 months and the remaining time as the case manager. Before working at the
Carriage House, she worked at CPWD as a case manager. She has also been the coordinator for several
programs serving disadvantaged youth. Heather has a master in Public Administration and a bachelor in
sociology. Outside of the Carriage House, she loves traveling and trying strange and unusual foods.
Steve Tombleson, Facility Manager, started working with the homeless in Anchorage, Alaska in 1983,
and volunteered at the shelter there for two years. He traveled around the U.S. with his backpack and guitar,
playing at festivals, bars, and coffee houses for seven years, and spent a lot of time with street people in
many cities. He started working at the Carriage House, then called S.T.A.R.T., in December of 2000.

We appreciate volunteers
for so many different things!
cook for hundreds, fold clothes at
our interview closet, clean thousands of
dirty dishes, play music, donate clothing,
perform acupuncture, and teach art
lessons. They give hugs, a shoulder to cry
on, and unending words of comfort. We’ve got loads of volunteer
stories that have touched us over the last year.
Here are just a few we want to share with you:
• Dozens of individual volunteers as well as churches & businesses
made holiday “stockings” for our guests, which were new socks filled
with items they can use: small food treats, toiletries, flashlights, even
gift certificates for local restaurants and stores.
• A young volunteer collected money as part of his Bar Mitzvah
project to donate to the Carriage House Community Table.
• Volunteer chefs prepare a week’s worth of flavorful & delicious
meals with spices donated by Savory Spice Shop. Tundra Specialties
donated a dozen hotel pans that we use for storing and reheating
our cooked meals in each week.
• Eco-Lite donated dozens of high-end jackets, tents and pants which
really help our clients survive in the elements year-round.
• A generous donor rented a garden plot for us at Hawthorn Gardens last spring, enabling us to have our
first Carriage House Community Table garden! Our clients worked alongside volunteers throughout the
season, harvesting lots of fresh produce that was used in our lunches & dinners.
• For our Thanksgiving AND Christmas meals, dozens of
volunteers waited on our guests, serving a full catered
holiday dinner with all the trimmings provided by
Savory Cuisine. Volunteers brought the dinners, dessert
and bread out to each guest.
The Carriage House Community Table
works because of our volunteers.
Over 300 volunteers give thousands of hours of service.

is not always glamorous, it is often fun and fulfilling.

Our approach is to provide people with food and basic care, while also offering access to services that
may improve their life circumstances. Our case manager sees more than 25 people per day and refers
our clients to a variety of services through our own staff resources and partnerships with other local
organizations.

Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive community for Boulder's homeless
and working poor. We are committed to addressing their survival needs and
to providing services that lead to healing, employment, and housing.

How to Give
The work that we do at The Carriage House Community Table depends entirely on the generosity of
supporters like you. The Carriage House Community Table is a registered 501 (c)(3) public charity
supported by private foundations, corporations, government grants, and individuals. Gifts to The
Carriage House Community Table are fully deductible to the extent of the law. We are committed
to keeping our costs low to get as much money as possible to the people that we serve.
SUPPORT US by making a gift of cash or stock, or by putting The Carriage House Community Table in
your will or long-term financial plans.
VOLUNTEER at The Carriage House Community Table. We need three crews of servers five days a
week to meet our demand. We also have a need for administrative help, data processing, and computer
maintenance.
DONATE food, sleeping bags, clothing, and other items to The Carriage House Community Table. There
is always a list of needed items online at www.bouldercarriagehouse.org
