Welcome to the 12th Annual
Hilton Arlington / Brute Lone Star Duals
Welcome to the 12th edition of the Lone Star Duals. We welcome back Brute as a name sponsor and look forward
to working with them on this great event. We also welcome new colleges participating for the first time in the
University of Minnesota, Cal Poly, Virginia Tech, and a program returning to the ranks of the NCAA Division
II, Colorado State - Pueblo. We are excited to have these programs joining us in Texas and hope they enjoy the
experience. Also, the University of Oklahoma and Brown will be joining us for the 12 year in a row and we are
thankful for their participation over the years and look forward to watching them compete.
With the perspective of 12 years of watching this competition I would like to make a few observations. First, we
have seen most of the premier and storied programs in the sport attend this event. We have watched Oklahoma,
Oklahoma State, Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Missouri, Michigan, all of the Service Academies, all of
the Ivy League Schools (except Yale), and now we are joined by Minnesota. We have seen National Championship teams from other divisions, such as Central Oklahoma and Nebraska-Kearney from NCAA Division II and
Wartburg in NCAA Division III. We have watched as teams from the NAIA, NJCAA, and NCWA competed in
the field. Without a doubt, we have been fortunate to expose Texas to some of the very best programs the sport
of wrestling has to offer.
It has also spawned a tremendous number of opportunities for Texas student athletes to participate in colleges
around the country. Many of our athletes have gone on to have a great deal of success at the higher level. On
the boy’s side, we have seen Tervel Delagnev, from Arlington High, become a 2 time NCAA Division II National
Champion and J.J. Holmes become an NJCAA National Champion. Ben Heizer, from Bowie, and Mo Lawal,
from Plano, have been All Americans and participated in the NCAA Division I National Championship match.
Mo was Division II Champ at Central Oklahoma before moving up to Division I at Oklahoma State. Brandon
Slay, our three time State Champion at Tascosa High, All American at Penn, and Olympic Champion, won the
Olympic Trials hosted right here in Dallas, Texas before the 2000 Sydney Olympics. We now welcome back our
first Olympic Medalist from the girls programs in Randi Miller, from Martin High, Olympic Bronze Medalist in
Beijing this summer. The number of students who have been able to attend college and earn a degree because of
their participation in the sport is too great to list here.
We have also had the opportunity to host the Dream Team High School competition and the NWCA All Star
Classic college competition in the Metroplex as well. This event was started as a way to expose Texas wrestlers
and coaches to the college programs around the country and it has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. We
hope you enjoy the competition over the next two days and keep in mind that many of the wrestlers you see here
may be competing in college and internationally over the next few years. You may even have the opportunity to
watch one or two of them competing in the 2012 Olympics in London.
Finally, I would like to dedicate this year’s event to our newest Olympian and a true local success story for the
Texas UIL women’s wrestling program, Olympic Bronze Medalist, Randi Miller. Congratulations, Randi!
Sincerely,
Barry Boustead

T
2008-09 UCO WRESTLING
2008-09 SEASON OUTLOOK
are more questions than answers for Central Oklahoma
heading into the 2008-09 season, but the Bronchos still
figure to be in the thick of the national championship hunt
next March.
UCO has four full-time starters back from last year’s
14-6 team that won its 18th NCAA Division II regional championship
in 19 years and finished sixth nationally, with a heavy influx of talented
newcomers and the possibility of several individuals changing weights
making it difficult to predict who will be where.
The 15-time national champion Bronchos have 26 redshirt and true
freshmen on the 47-man roster and it may be well into the second semester before the starting lineup is established, but veteran head
coach David James is excited about his team’s chances.
“We have a lot of unknowns about this team, but from topto-bottom we’re going to be better than last year and we’re not
conceding anything to anybody,” said James, who recorded
his 300th dual win last season. “I don’t think there’s any
secret we’re going to be counting on some young guys and
some new faces, but we’ve got the same high expectations
we always have.”
UCO returns three All-Americans in Tim Elliott, Colby
Robinson and Dustin Finn along with national qualifier
Jarrett Edison, though Elliott and Robinson are both
contemplating a weight change this
season.
That foursome gives the
Bronchos a solid core to build
around, but deciding on the rest
of the lineup -- and figuring out
who goes where -- will be interesting.
“We’re pretty set with the four guys
we have coming back and we need for
them to all step it up a notch,” James
said. “Other than those four we have a
lot of unknowns, though we’ve got a lot
of talented guys in our room.
“We’ve got to identify who else
is going to come on and take
charge at certain weights.
It’s probably going to take
some time before we find
out who we’re going to have
in the lineup and where everybody’s going to be.”
UCO has several veterans who could play a key role
this season, while a host of newcomers will also contend for starting
berths.
“We’ve got some older guys who know they have a great opportunity
this season and we’ve also got a lot of young kids who want to step right
in,” James said. “Everybody’s excited and we’re optimistic about what
we can accomplish this season.
“Our goal every year is to win the national championship and that
hasn’t changed.”
Here’s a weight-by-weight look at UCO for 2008-09:
Sophomore letterman Nick Rice is back after starting most of the
second semester last year and freshmen Seth Johnson and David
McNeil could also play a role here.
Coach James Says: “Willie is young, but he has lots of talent and
has the opportunity to step in immediately. He’s quick and explosive
and we look for him to do great things at UCO. Tim has the option of
going at 125 and we just don’t know yet what he’s going to do. Seth
and David are two good, young guys and Nick got some experience last
year that should benefit him.”
125 POUNDS
A returning All-American will rule the roost here, though junior Colby
Robinson could elect to drop to 141. A sixth-place national placer last
year, Robinson is determined to have a big season and will undoubtedly
be a national title contender at whatever weight he competes.
Senior letterman Luke Elmore was a two-time junior college AllAmerican who will be right in the thick of things and he’s ready for a
chance to be the main starter, with newcomers adding quality depth.
An incoming freshman is the front-runner to take over the starting
berth here, though a proven senior is also a possibility.
Willie Gunter is a gifted rookie who won three state high school titles
and he’s the favorite unless All-American Tim Elliott moves down to the
weight where he won a junior college national championship in 2007.
28 Lone Star Duals • 2009
133 POUNDS
The Bronchos have one of the top returning national placers
back at this weight in senior Tim Elliott, who finished fifth
last year while going 23-5 with 17 bonus-point wins. He’s a
national championship contender, whether it’s here or at 125,
and will be a big-time point producer for UCO.
Junior college transfer Scott Berens will be the
favorite to start if Elliott moves down, with freshmen Tyson Bernardi, Trison Graham and Ben
Johnson also in the mix.
Coach James Says: “Tim came in at the semester last year and hit the ground running, so he’s
more at ease this year. He’s a wide-open wrestler
and is a winner who we’re counting on strongly
at whatever weight he goes. Placing fifth wasn’t
acceptable to him and he has a lot of high goals
this season. Scott has college experience, which is
an advantage for him, and we’ve got some good,
young guys here.”
141 POUNDS
A pretty wide-open weight, with no true
favorite unless junior All-American Colby
Robinson drops down from 149.
Sophomore Trey Branscum saw extended action last year and probably
rates the slight edge for the top spot
if he can overcome missing most
of preseason workouts, with a
trio of youngsters ready to
challenge.
Colby Robinson
Freshman Matt Bryant is a highly-regarded
newcomer, while redshirt
freshman Jordan Edison
and rookie Austin Standage can’t be overlooked.
Coach James Says: “Colby’s a possibility here and again it’s a
situation where we may not decide for awhile. Trey missed a lot of the
preseason and that’s going to be tough, but he wrestled quite a bit last
year and that’s got to be an advantage for him. Matt is a talented freshman with great mat awareness who has the opportunity to step in real
quick and we’ve got some other guys who want to be in there.”
149 POUNDS
Bronchos
2008-09 UCO WRESTLING
2008-09 SEASON OUTLOOK
Sophomore Lance Thompson didn’t wrestle last year after redshirting
the season before at Oklahoma State and he has the talent to be a factor,
as do freshmen Tony Mahan and Justin Suskey.
Coach James Says: “Colby is a good team leader and he has an
outstanding attitude. He’s not content with placing sixth, is very motivated this year and we’re counting on him at whatever weight he goes.
Luke is a veteran guy with a lot of experience who wants to be in there
and we’ve got some other talented guys here.”
157 POUNDS
Another weight with no clear-cut favorite, though junior Mikey
Morgan would probably earn that tag if he wasn’t also in the running
at 165.
A junior college national champion at 165 last year, Morgan definitely
has the experience advantage and is capable of big
things if he ends up at the weight. Senior
Luke Elmore could also factor in here,
while redshirt freshmen Kelly Henderson and Connor Robinson lead a long
list of other possible contenders.
Coach James Says: “Mikey has
the experience, he has a winning
mentality and he would do a good
job, though again we don’t know
what’s going to happen for
awhile. Kelly has a super
attitude and looks good
and Connor has made
tremendous gains over the
past year.”
Sophomore transfer Brennan Ochoa adds quality depth, with senior
Jon Wechter, freshman Derrick Adkins and junior Trevor Adkisson
also available if needed.
Coach James Says: “Daniel has had a lot of ups and downs in his
career, but he has experience and can help us. Tommy is a savvy competitor capable of doing a lot of good things, but he has to take care of
his academic issues.”
184 POUNDS
A trio of contenders will be vying for the starting berth, with junior
Kenny Meredith probably rating the early edge.
A starter here two years ago as a true freshman, Meredith redshirted
in 2006-07 and then saw some starting duty at 174 last year. He’s back
at 184 now and has the ability to be a real asset this winter.
Ready to challenge for the top spot is sophomore
Patrick Finn, who joined the team after injuries
ended his UCO football career, and junior
transfer Trevor Adkisson.
Coach James Says: “We’ve got
three guys who look like the frontrunners. Kenny has loads of talent and just needs to step it up,
but his attitude has been super.
Patrick works hard and has to
be patient since he’s been out
of wrestling awhile. Trevor
is real strong and he has a lot
of college experience, which
is important.”

to another level this season. He’s very, very talented and we need him

see him do a lot of good things at UCO.”
174 POUNDS
This will be an interesting weight with the presence of two veterans,
although one won’t be available until the second semester.
Junior Daniel Morrison was a national tournament qualifier at 174
two years ago and started here most of last season, so he obviously has
the talent and experience to be a mainstay.
Senior Tommy McCarty started the first semester last year and was
a two-time junior college All-American, but he won’t be eligible until
the second semester.
Both have the ability to be top All-America contenders for the
Bronchos and it probably be well into the second semester before the
starter is finally determined.
HEAVYWEIGHT
UCO is in great shape here with preseason national favorite Dustin
Finn back, but he won’t be able to join the team until after football
season is over in mid-November.
That wasn’t a factor last year, however, and it doesn’t figure to be
much of one this season. Finn joined the team late last year and went
on to enjoy one of the best-ever seasons by a UCO heavyweight, going
29-6 with 13 falls en route to a national runner-up finish.
Freshman Cameron Gladd will see plenty of action this season.
Coach James Says: “Dustin’s got to be excited about this year.
He had a great year last season, but came up a little short and that has
to be motivation enough. Cameron will do a lot of wrestling this year
and he’s a strong kid who moves good for a big guy.”

Harvard
The Harvard Mission
The Harvard Wrestling team provides an opportunity for students to fully develop the values on which this university
rests: the advancement of knowledge to the highest potential. The purpose of the wrestling family is to develop a
unit that transcends the walls of this university, to provide the necessary tools for the pursuit of individual and team
goals, and to recognize this activity from a larger community perspective. Harvard Wrestling strives to be more
than a team. Rather, the focus is to be a home away from home. The family is critical in providing encouragement,
understanding, and personal growth during the undergraduate’s four years at Harvard. The Harvard Wrestler
gains satisfaction from knowing that he did his best to become the best that he is capable of becoming.
Within the realm of diverse individual goals, our common mission shall be advanced through desire, discipline,
and determination. Our program recognizes these virtues to be essential in the mental and physical development
of its members and their roles as Harvard wrestlers, students, and more importantly as life’s citizens of this world.
Leadership development is of utmost importance as one navigates through his years here on campus.
COLLEGES
Through these means, Harvard wrestling strives to paint its masterpiece on a larger canvas. A graduate of this
program will acquire the appropriate tools to navigate through the often sharp curves of life. The acquisition of
perspective is the inevitable outcome of the journey, made up of blood, sweat, and tears.
Entering for the love of wrestling, one will leave with an appreciation for life.
Harvard Success
Sixteen Harvard wrestlers have won 22 All-America honors in the history of the program with 14 of those awards
coming under the David G. Bunning Head Coach for Harvard Wrestling, Jay Weiss. Harvard has had at least one
All-American in each of the last six seasons and a program record three earned the distinction in 2007.
The Crimson has had 10 Ivy League Rookies of the Year and three Ivy League Wrestlers of the Year, including J.P.
O’Connor ’10 who was the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2007 and the Wrestler of the Year in 2008. He is only
the second Ancient Eight grappler to be named Ivy League Wrestler of the Year one year after winning Rookie of
the Year honors.
Weiss has won numerous league coaching awards while NCAA Champion Jesse Jantzen ’04 collected dozens
of accolades, including three All-America honors, Most Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA Championship, Ivy
League Rookie of the Year, Ivy League Wrestler of the Year, EIWA Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler, the
EIWA Fletcher Award, the EIWA Sheridan Award as well as NWCA Academic All-America.
Harvard competes in one of the most challenging conferences, the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association
(EIWA), in NCAA Division I. The Crimson captured the EIWA Championship in 2001 along with the Ivy League
conference title. Harvard has consistently finished in the top-five at the conference tournament and has had an
individual champion 10 of the last 11 years.
Harvard, who returns two All-Americans and four NCAA qualifiers in 2008-09, looks to build upon the recent
success and keep the momentum of Harvard wrestling on the rise.

Lopers
Why The “Lopers”?
The University of Nebraska at Kearney is one of only two NCAA schools to be nicknamed the Antelopes (Lopers for short). The other is Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. GCU is often referred to as the ‘Lopes.
The Antelope name became associated with the school thanks to the student newspaper. In December
of 1910, the staff chose the creature, calling it “the swiftest, most beautiful, and most graceful animal
in the western plains.” The paper continued, in its first edition, “(Antelope) appeals as a fitting emblem of the school located on the broad prairies of Nebraska, where the antelopes once roamed so
freely.”
Adopted soon after by the athletic department, the short term of “Lopers” didn’t appear until the
1950’s when the local daily paper, The Kearney Hub, began using the term. The student paper quickly
picked up on “Lopers” and the word has stuck ever since.

WRESTLING RENOVATIONS COMPLETE
First class is a way of life when it comes to facilities at the University of Oklahoma, and the recent
renovations to the Howard McCasland Field House, home of Sooner wrestling, is a prime example.
The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad now boasts one of the premier workout facilities in
the nation thanks to a $1.3 million expansion project spurred on by a $1 million donation from
former Sooner wrestler Rodney Thornton.
The renovation to the Port Robertson Wrestling Center was added onto the north side of the existing facility and showcases a workout room with four practice mats, covering 9,000 square-feet.
Also included is a separate club team practice area and team training facility. A team room is
equipped with leather couches for lounging and a big screen television. A coaches’ locker room, an
open area for weight training and an equipment room complete the addition.

What is a Hokie?
The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia
Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to
Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the
necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a
purpose was held by the student body.
Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Hokie” yell (Old
Hokie Cheer below) which is still used today. Later, when
asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull explained
the word was solely the product of his imagination and was
used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people
loyal to Tech athletics.
The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The
colors were chosen by a committee because they made a ‘unique combination’ not worn elsewhere at the time.
The official definition of “hokie” is “a loyal Virginia Tech Fan”.

Men’s Wrestling outlook:
The 2008-2009 Titan Wrestling team will look to build upon a very solid core of young wrestlers returning from the
2007-2008 season. The Titans return several starters as well as have added several seasoned freshmen who have
wrestled for Coach Eaton’s Bomber’s youth wrestling club for the past several years. This team is lead by Junior
All-State wrestler Cody Curtiss, who has moved up a weight class from 103 pounds to 112 this year. Cody will try
to improve upon a sophomore season that saw him win 45 matches! A solid core of lightweights will help make
this team a contender this year.
Women’s wrestling outlook:
The 2008-2009 Titan women’s team returns several key members from the team that placed 3rd in the Dual State
Championships in 2007-2008. Leading the team is Neda Hassani, a senior fresh off earning her first All-American
honors at Junior Nationals in Fargo in July 2008. Joining her are Seniors Maliha Mithani, Brea McNeil, and
Kaitlyn Brussow—all three who are also previous state qualifiers or state alternates. This team may be the most
experienced Titan team in history. The Titans look to win their 5th straight district title and be contenders once
again in the region and state!

If you don’t Believe…You don’t Belong
The Wolverines are currently 4-0 in duals. This LHS team is well balanced and loaded with talent. Sr. Tim
Francisco returns as a 6a State Finalist at 125 along with state placer Shane Henning currently ranked 3rd at
119. Freshman Colton Nunn will fair well at 103 along with 112 Jared Campbell and 130 Senior Logan Burk.
Newcomer Marvin Williams and Austin Rabon will share the varsity duties at 135. Andrew Garies and Paul
Lopez will hold down the 140 slot. At 145 Jr Austin Lopez will return as a solid varsity pinning machine and Sr
DC Walker will do the honors at 152. Freshman sensation Jeff Irvin will help out at 160 and Michael Ferguson
is holding his own at 171 wrestling tough while winning the SOI and placing 3rd at the Bristow Tournament.
Michaels brother Mitchell will fill the 180 spot along with Kyle Fultz. Sr Captain Dustin Phillips will provide
leadership and poise to this ambitious group. He has wrestled 215 and Heavyweight for LHS thusfar. He is a
team player and pushed by Sophomore Adam Lambert, a jr high state placer from last year, also used wherever
he is needed. Sr. Joselyn Maldonaldo could help this team go to the next lever. His potential is off the charts.
Big Easy Elton White will wrestle heavy and has done a great job so far this year. Look out for the Wolverines
this year. WE’RE BACK!!!!
