Genisys Credit Union – Heart Of - Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce
Business Update August/September 2011 Commerce ● Walled Lake ● White Lake Wixom ● Wolverine Lake ● Union Lake Novi ● Waterford ● West Bloomfield The Lakes Area Chamber Genisys Credit Union - Heart of the Lakes Gala “SUMMER CELEBRATION” On stage, two magic shows featuring Magic Joe kept both the kids and adults engaged with his magic tricks. The delicious smell of grilled dogs and burgers filled the air while live music from two bands, Lookin’ Back, Bob Seger’s Tribute Band and Slight Return kept the place jumping. The surprise appearance and vocals of a friendly Mick Jagger look-a-like was an enjoyable addition to the show. There were also new car displays and a section of Michigan Marketplace vendors selling everything from clothes, books, jewelry, garden accessories and more! The 2011 Genisys Credit Union - Heart of the Lakes Gala - “Summer Celebration” on Saturday, June 18, was indeed a day filled with fun for the entire family! Held against the beautiful backdrop of Multi-Lakes Conservation Association in Commerce, the day dawned warm and sunny. Perfect weather to enjoy a summer festival in the lakes area! In the Kids Zone, volunteers and the Detroit Piston’s Palace Patrol delighted the kids with numerous old-time games and bounce houses, while talented face painters transformed them into puppies, butterflies, superheros and more! ● ON THE INSIDE ● FAREWELL TO A FRIEND ……………………………………….PAGE 2 ………………………………………. Under his guidance, the publication morphed into a real “news” letter that is distributed not only to our members, but is also requested at lakes area municipal offices and community libraries. The Chamber formally recognized the countless hours he volunteered to this effort when he was named the recipient of the Chamber Member of the Year award in 2008. JAMES W. FANCY Sept. 27, 1933 - July 7, 2011 We are saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend and dedicated board member, Jim Fancy. Jim served on the LACC board from 1980 - 2011, the longest active board member on record. Jim was also the owner of the SCN Communications Group in Waterford and publisher of The Spinal Column Newsweekly. During the past eight years, Jim shared his passion and expertise for news and editorial comments in "It has been such a privilege to have had the opportunity to be mentored by such a keenly perceptive and brilliant mind”, said Chamber director, Jo Alley. "We will all miss him deeply. Unfortunately, for us, his absence has left a void that will never be filled again." James W. Fancy, a resident of West Bloomfield and owner/publisher of the Spinal Column Newsweekly since 1969, died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Thursday, July 7. He was 77 years old. Mr. Fancy is survived by his sister Noreen Fancy; son Steven Fancy (Marisa) and daughter Susan Fancy (Timothy Utter); grandchildren Membership Manager Jim Szegi Ronessa Butler (Dave), Jeff Fancy, Patrick Fancy and Alex Fancy; great-grandchildren Lily, Aevryn, Maddie and Zoe; and former spouse Patricia Fancy. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Fancy. Born September 27, 1933 in Detroit to the late Oran and Noreen (Ross) Fancy, Mr. Fancy was a graduate of Cass Technical High School in Detroit and later earned his bachelor’s of business administration and master’s of business administration degrees from Wayne State University. After working for the Ford Motor Company and in the newspaper industry on metro Detroit’s east side, Mr. Fancy purchased the Spinal Column Newsweekly in late 1969 and continued in the position of owner/publisher until his death. He was an active Board member of the Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce for 31 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests making donations to an animal charity of one’s choice in his name. 2011 BOARD OF DIRECTORS - Officers and directors all serve as volunteers. This steel will be memorialized at Fire Station #1 and will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made during and after the World Trade Center terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. White Lake Township is happily singing, "We're in the Movies", as they await the September release of the feature film The Wicked. Most of the movie was filmed within the township’s borders. The Wicked features a small rural town named "Bogie Lake", which is rumored to have a witch living in an old house. While none of the characters early in the movie knows whether the witch actually exists, the plot evolves to the point where the witch is holding a child as a hostage in her home, forcing local community leaders and law enforcement officials into action. As part of Wixom’s welcome of this piece of history, a short ceremony was conducted at Fire Station #1 with tributes by Mayor Kevin W. Hinkley, Wixom Firefighters Association President, Jason Breitmeyer, as well as various Police and Fire personnel. A formal dedication ceremony will be scheduled later this year. White Lake, along with the nearby communities of Commerce Township and Clarkston, played a major role in the film, including the White Lake Police Department who loaned the producers their vehicles to use in the movie. Walled Lake Fire Department receives grant The Walled Lake Fire Department received a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $18,000 for the purchase of two Thermal Imager Cameras. The federal share of the grant is 95% or $17,100. The City of Walled Lake is responsible for 5% or $900 towards the camera purchase. The witch’s house featured in the movie is located on the 1800 block of Hill Road in White Lake. Many other White Lake sites and neighborhoods are featured in the film. The horror/mystery film is being edited and sales agents are currently looking to find a studio to distribute the film. These cameras allow firefighters to see areas of heat through smoke, darkness, or heat-permeable barriers. They pick up body heat and are normally used where people are trapped where rescuers cannot find them. Rick Snyder signs new bills into law SB 214 and HB 4359 - Allows state to issue specially designed motorcycle license plates to veterans of armed forces and current National Guard members. Specialty license plates are currently available for passenger vehicles, but not motorcycles. this change will also give the state more ability to ensure the incentive program creates jobs for Michigan residents. HB 4315 - Renames the portion of US-31 between I-196 in Allegan County and M-45 in Ottawa County the "Medal of Honor Recipients Highway." The Michigan Department of Transportation will work with local veterans organizations to develop a separate sign bearing the names of Lt. Col. Matt Urban, Cpl. John Essebagger, Jr., Sgt. Gordon Yntema and Sgt. Paul Ronald Lambers. SB 24 - Allows premium finance companies that are majority owned by insurance agents to share profits with those owneragents. This change will level the playing field by allowing insurance agents that are associated with premium finance companies to compete for business with insurance agents that are not. HB 4666 - Will help the state collect an estimated $5 million of the approximately $12 million owed to it from unpaid liens on farmland by allowing landowners to pay the state at a reduced rate. The legislation will also give farmers an incentive to pay in a timely fashion by charging interest on future liens. Money collected will support the Michigan Agricultural Preservation Fund. SB 28 - Allows taxpayers to pay their income taxes using a credit or debit card, which in addition to being more convenient for taxpayers will also save the state money by reducing costs associated with processing checks. Michigan is currently one of only two states that does not offer taxpayers this option. HB 4727 - Allows children under the age of 18 to volunteer at county fairs and other similar agricultural events without being required to have a work permit, which will make it easier for scout troops, youth ministries and students who participate in 4-H to provide community service. SB 383 - Gives the Michigan Film Office the ability to negotiate the size of incentives it offers to film, television and video game producers. Under current law, the incentive program is strictly defined, resulting in fixed incentive percentages and greater expenditure of taxpayer money than necessary. HB 4759 and SB 223 - Amend the Commercial Rehabilitation Act to expand the definition of qualified facilities and give local units of government more flexibility to define rehabilitation zones, helping community revitalization efforts. With this change, the film office may offer productions lower incentives packages than the current automatic 42 percent subsidy. By having the ability to offer varying levels of support, MichAgain Recruitment Campaign Brings Smart Professionals Back Home The Michigan Economic Development Corp. has hosted three Michigan Again road shows to Boston, Chicago and Washington D.C. with a fourth job-recruitment trip scheduled for Silicon Valley this November. Amy Cell, Senior Vice President, Talent Enhancement for the MEDC, said a dozens of professionals, with Michigan roots, have expressed interest in coming home. the Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce “People in Michigan hate leaving,” she said. “But someone who has never been in Michigan is reluctant to consider the state. Our easiest market is people with an association with Michigan. We’re also looking for smart people to fill jobs at our corporations. So we’re partnering with university alumni associations because they track their graduates.” “This program is not only about bringing great talent back to Michigan, but making great connections with alumni, site selectors and businesses looking to expand.” “We got 10 to 20 talent leads of people who want to come back to Michigan from those cities,” she said. “We also had some Venture Capital leads from some that wanted to invest in companies here. We even received a business attraction lead; someone wanting to expand into Michigan. All we need to do is show the quality of the opportunity. We just show them MichAgain.” Goddard-Talmay Agency, Inc. 347 N. Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake 248-624-1531 [email protected] 17 Genisys Credit Union is a Bright Spot! Detroit #9 on list of American cities with the most millionaires Genisys Credit Union was recently nominated for Corp! Magazine’s 2011 Michigan’s Economic Bright Spots award and was honored on June 14th at an awards breakfast. Are you surprised that Detroit has a single millionaire, let alone over 90,000? Both the car industry and the large number of companies that supported it with parts, technology and components like tires all suffered as sales fell. GM and Chrysler went into bankruptcy. “Genisys is honored to accept this prestigious award for the second year in a row,” said Jackie Buchanan, CEO. “We stand by the ‘people helping people’ philosophy and feel fortunate to be able to help make a difference in many communities throughout Michigan.” But the industry has begun an unexpected renaissance. GM and Ford are routinely the top two manufacturers of cars sold in the U.S. Each has cut costs enough to insure profitability. Michigan has offered tax incentives to bring new industries to the Detroit area, helping it become a modest center for small tech firms. Genisys was one of the honorees demonstrating that there are Michigan-based companies who are growing, thriving and standing out from the crowd. In order to continue to position itself for success, Genisys invested in additional staff training, re-organized reports and accountability structures, continued development and implementation of technologies to improve efficiencies and add member convenience, and reduced expenses in response to the changing marketplace and economy. “We found that this year’s winning companies seem to share some common trails – a willingness to innovate and look for new opportunities even in a down market, an effort to diversify and adapt their business models even while cutting costs, and a love and desire to do business in Michigan,” said Jennifer Kluge, Corp! Magazine Publisher.
