The Season of Giving
This time of year is frequently called the season of giving, but in reality
the season of giving at RHF and our communities is a yearlong experience.
This issue of RHF Today provides numerous examples of how residents
and team members work to make life better for others. Thanks for what
you do! May your efforts and contributions inspire others to follow
your lead.
With this issue we welcome Pilgrim Manor in Grand Rapids, Michigan
to the RHF family.
When I served as Pastor of Peace Memorial Church in the Chicago area,
I was also on the Board of the Evangelical Health System (EHS) as the
system was beginning to develop. Later, Lutheran General merged with EHS to become Advocate Health
Care, related to the United Church of Christ and the largest provider of health care in Illinois. When I
came to RHF I felt that free-standing and small- system senior housing and service providers would also be
moving into systems seeking the human resources and financial benefits only larger systems can provide.
It is beginning to happen, and we have been approached by several other providers. We welcome those
conversations.
And speaking of conversations, I urge all residents and their families, friends, our team members and
Board members to call and advocate strongly for the HUD 202 program, the most successful senior housing
program the department has ever had. In the late 70s and early 80s twenty thousand new units were being
funded annually. That number has decreased every year and for 2012 no new units will be funded. This is
in spite of long waiting lists and, in some cities, persons waiting for ten years or more to get to the top of
the list.
At a recent Angelus Plaza event, I had an opportunity to talk with Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard
(California 34th District), a long time supporter of affordable housing. I asked her if she had any advice as
to what we should do to preserve the program. She said we should flood Congress with letters and telephone
calls urging them to keep funding new 202 construction. Have residents, families, friends, everyone call
their Senator and Representative and tell them how much we need this program.
So in this season I ask you to be generous in your giving and with your time, letters and telephone calls.
What you do and say can make a difference. Have a wonderful Holiday Season and a happy 2012!
RHF Today is published periodically for residents, families of residents, the United Church of Christ and sponsoring
congregations, staff, local board members, and friends of Retirement Housing Foundation, 911 N. Studebaker Road, Long Beach,

Honors
Welcome to the Family!
Pilgrim Manor is a non-profit health care system for seniors
located in Grand Rapids and has served the western Michigan
area for nearly 50 years.
It was founded in 1963 as a retirement home by 22 United
Church of Christ (UCC) congregations in Kent County. It is
the only UCC-affiliated long-term care community in Western
Michigan. Pilgrim Manor is licensed for 111 assisted living
beds and 55 skilled nursing beds. Twenty-seven assisted
living beds are designated for dementia care services.
This Community provides a range of services including
short term rehabilitation, assisted living, memory care,
skilled nursing, home and respite care. Pilgrim Manor is
a provider of integrated health care and support services
dedicated to enhancing the physical, social, spiritual, and
emotional quality of life for older adults and their supporters
throughout the greater Grand Rapids area.
In the late Spring, the founding churches and the Pilgrim
Manor’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to affiliate
with RHF. After due diligence on the part of both parties,
on October 1, 2011 it became official. We are proud to welcome Pilgrim Manor as an affiliate of Retirement
Housing Foundation. Pilgrim Manor’s CEO is Rev. George Heartwell who also serves as Mayor of Grand Rapids.
Mission One - A Joint Effort To Help Our Neighbors
It was announced at the 2011 General Synod that was held in
Florida last summer - the United Church of Christ (UCC) was
planning an event that would span 11 days. That event would
attack the issue of hunger - not only in America, but around the
world.
Mission I, among other things, was challenging UCC
churches and organizations throughout the country to gather
one million food items and donate them to their local food
bank or other agency that addressed hunger issues in their
city/town/area. And they had to accomplish this in the first 11
days of November.
St. Catherine
Florissant, MO
RHF decided to ask its communities to participate in the challenge
and the response was incredible.
West Valley Towers residents collected 217 food items and 300 knitted/
sewn items to donate to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, operated by
Catholic Charities of Los Angeles.
Capital Court (Corydon, IN) invited the citizens of their community
to participate in their food drive through free color ads that ran in
their local newpaper throughout the drive. The result - more than
600 items were donated to Community Services in Corydon.
West Valley Towers
Van Nuys, CA
The national office staff donated part of the items they collected to the Drop-In Center for the Homeless that is
operated out of the First Congregational Church in Long Beach, California. The remainder of the items will be
split between the Salvation Army Food Bank in Long Beach and We Care, an organization that supports families
in Los Alamitos, California.
In total more than 13,400 items were collected in 69 RHF communities in 14 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S.
Virgin Islands.

50 Years of Caring
About People
This is part three in a series of articles about RHF’s
history. In telling our story, every once in a while
we will use one of RHF’s founders, Clark Harshfield’s
words (from his own notes).
Shepherd
Park
In March of 1967, Reinhold Klein tendered his resignation from the position of Executive
Director of the Foundation. The success of the Retirement Housing Foundation
had not gone unnoticed by leaders in the industry. Mr. Klein had established a
reputation of getting things done. He was an authority in the senior housing and
retirement services field.
The Board of Directors accepted his resignation with deep and sincere regret.
Pioneer
Manor
Clark Harshfield was named to replace Klein and began his 20-year tenure as
Executive Director of the Foundation.
The Foundation struggled but continued to grow during the last part of the 60’s
and during the 70’s. Bixby Knolls Tower was able to add Assisted Living and
Skilled Nursing services to their community. Mayflower Gardens added a
Convalescent Hospital to its campus. Three multi-level retirement communities
and seven affordable independent living communities were added to RHF’s portfolio.
It was during this time that RHF played a part in revolutionizing the building industry.
The “Breakthrough” Campaign
In 1969 George Romney was selected by President Nixon to serve as Secretary of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD). One of his first orders of business was
to try to find a way to reduce housing costs . . . automobiles were produced on
an assembly line . . . why couldn’t housing??
His campaign was called “Breakthrough” and called upon American corporations
to design systems which would reduce housing costs by virtue of mass production.
Harshfield started following this campaign carefully, hopeful that RHF would
be able to benefit from it.
Kemet House
More than 120 corporations entered the competition. Ten finalists would be
selected and each of them would not only be given the privilege of building on
a demonstration site, but would also receive an allotment of
insured loans for the construction of 1,000 housing units. Of
those ten, three were high-rise prototypes.
After visiting all three, Harshfield felt that The Forest City
Corporation from Cleveland, Ohio showed the most potential.
HUD had selected them to build their prototype in Sacramento.
The Dillon System
The
Carlin
Upon visiting the Forest City Enterprises offices in Ohio,
I found not only a friendly reception, but an eager desire
to showcase their product. Tom Dillon, an innovative Ohio
builder had engineered an industrialized high-rise construction
plan which he called the “Dillon System.” The Forest City
Company had formed a partnership with Dillon, and later
-4-
Celebrating Our History
Dr. Joseph with L.A. City
Councilwoman Jan Perry
acquired all of the ownership rights to the
new system.
The Dillon System called for an assembly
line production of all component elements,
storage areas and truck loading areas.
The California plant was located in Irwindale,
Angelus
less than a mile from the major freeways.
Plaza
The assembly line reached the length of two
football fields and provided the means of
building the central core of each of the apartment
300 Main
units: the kitchen, bath, and all plumbing and electric connections. Each
completed package (which included a potted geranium on the sink) had all of
the equipment in place: sinks, showers, bathtubs, stoves, cabinets, walls, ceilings, and
light fixtures were wrapped in heavy black plastic, moved out to the yard, and stored
subject to transport to the new building location.
Once a building was prepared and the foundations completed, an eleven story structure
was usually “topped out” within twenty-two working days, and the completion of the
building was assured within an additional two to three months.
RHF was given the opportunity to acquire the Sacramento demonstration site.
RHF encouraged Forest City Enterprises to move into the strong California building
market and indicated that RHF was prepared to work with them for the immediate
use of their system.
Ralston
Tower
Ultimately, more than 800 units of the 1,000 units allotted to Forest City were
awarded and built for RHF. Those California communities included: Pilgrim
Tower North (Pasadena), Ralston Tower (Modesto), and MacArthur Park
Tower (Los Angeles).
Ultimately, RHF built 14 communities using the Dillon System.
The Largest Undertaking Of Its Kind
Beginning in 1963, RHF started knockiing on the door of the newly founded
Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in Los Angeles. Authorized by
a vote of the citizenry of Los Angeles in the late fifties, the Agency had
acquired all of the housing and acreage on their redevelopment area,
“Bunker Hill.” It occurred to some of us on the Board of RHF that there
should be a major retirement complex in the downtown area, and that
Bunker Hill offered that opportunity.
I recall the day that Mr. Otto Knudsen, President of RHF, Mr. Klein and I
visited the offices of the CRA in the Olivet Building on Olive Street in
1963. We were received cordially, and an interest was expressed looking
toward the future. However, the work on Bunker Hill was still in its
planning stages.
It wouldn’t be until 1975 before the CRA’s Board of Directors would
authorize the publishing of an “RFP” (Request For Proposal) for the
Development of a six-acre site fronting Hill Street and spanning the
Third Street Tunnel.
RHF was about to begin the journey of building the largest affordable
housing community for seniors in the nation.

Milestones
Happy Birthday To You, . . . . . . . . . . .
Crooked Creek Tower - Indianapolis, Indiana
Addie O’Neil was born Nov 5, 1907 in Paris, Tennessee. She was raised in
Indianapolis where she graduated from high school and went on to become a
licensed beautician for 10 years. She married and moved to Chicago, where she
had 2 sons before moving back to Indianapolis to have 3 more sons. Ultimately
she retired from Indiana University Hospital as an assistant technician in 1971. She
has lived at Crooked Creek Towers for more than 16 years.
Pilgrim Tower East - Pasadena, California
Vernelle Steven celebrated her 100th birthday on September 22nd. She was born
and raised in Arkansas. After moving to sunny California in 1969, Vernelle
began her 22 year LPN career at Huntington Hospital. Then, in 1988, she moved
to Pilgrim Tower East.
What’s her secret to a long life? “Well, nothing special to get this far, pass life day-byday, ask the Lord for guidance, think positive and you will always be happy.”
La Mirada Vistas - La Mirada, California
Victorina Salgado celebrated her 100th birthday on November 2nd among her friends at
La Mirada Vistas. La Mirada Mayor Pro Tem Gabe Garcia attended the event and
presented her with a framed certificate, commemorating her special day. Vikki is one of
the first residents to move into La Mirada Vistas on 3-15-09. She is also one of the first
leaders of the Project Hands Group. She handmade some necklaces and earrings which
she sold to buy fabric for the Project Hands Group. Vikki said that her secret to staying
young is to stay optimistic and to eat a banana every day.
Christmas Came Early in Colorado This Year
Harvest Pointe - Loveland, Colorado
Harvest Pointe recently received a wonderful donation of a 10-passenger bus from
Auto Integrity of Loveland. Michelle Capp (Harvest Pointe’s Service Coordinator)
told the car dealership of her residents’ transportation needs and look what they
showed up with!!
Harvest Pointe’s oldest resident Irma Young (age 98) presented Keith Knutson (owner
of Auto Integrity) with flowers and a big hug upon delivery of the van. Irma told Keith
“Thank you SO much, you just don’t know what this means to people like me!”.
Walking For A Cause
The Cloisters - Deland, Florida
Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease. There are more than 5 million
Americans living with the disease, and nearly 11 million more serving
as caregivers. Residents and staff from The Cloisters participated in the
2011 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s™ to help fund
research that can put an end to it. The Cloisters team ranked 3rd in the
fundraising category with $1,936. Two of our team members, Cheryl
Starling and Barbara Ricker, placed 3rd and 5th (respectively) in the
individual category.

She loves classical music and still loves to go to classical
concerts. Being good to others is a top priority for her. She
has lived at Bishop’s Glen for the past 14 years.
Courtenay Springs Village - Merritt Island, Florida
You can say that George Van Praag has laughed his way
through his first 100 years on this earth. When asked his
secret, George will tell you, “Keep the faith, without faith, there’s nothing. And another
thing, don’t be like a majority of people - focusing on morbid thoughts - instead think
about ice cream or chocolate and love people as God loves us, it could change the world.”
George and his wife, Marie are among the newer residents at Courtenay Springs Village.
You can always find this loving couple . . . all you just have to do is listen for the laughter.
He Delivers . . . . Breakfast??
Towne Creek Apartments - McKinney, Texas
Towne Creek has the world’s best mailman!
“John the Mailman” has been Towne Creek’s postman on and off since the building
opened in 1991. He not only brings the residents mail, but personally volunteers his
off time to serve the residents with either pizza parties or breakfast (he’s pictured
here serving breakfast).
He brings each resident a rose on Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. During his recent
vacation to Alaska, he sent Towne Creek a postcard from his trip. He is
a great postman, who also cares about each and every resident.
Crescent Manor Residents
In The Pink
Crescent Manor & Mesquite Gardens - Mesquite, Texas
The residents at Crescent Manor and Mesquite Gardens raised awareness
for Breast Cancer on October 27th by wearing Pink and donating $100
to the Cancer Foundation for Research. Not only were they educated
that day by Baylor Health Center about signs of cancer and prevention
methods but shared stories of survival.

Project H.A.N.D.S.
Once again RHF Today has set aside a major portion of an issue to honor and acknowledge
the residents (and the volunteers, agencies and businesses that partner with them) who
devote so much time and effort to Project H.A.N.D.S.® (Helping Angels National Donated
Support). The program is resident driven - it is the residents who seek out a local agency
(or agencies) that needs help; it is the residents who work with that agency to determine
what they can create that will benefit their clients; and it is the residents who find the materials
- either through donations or monies from their own pocket (in many cases) - to make
the items.
Project H.A.N.D.S.® is unique in that it allows our residents to give back to their communities individually and
as a group. More than 2,510 residents participated in this program last year - any resident can be a part of Project
H.A.N.D.S. even if they just come down to meetings and enjoy the camaraderie. Last year more than 11,500 items
were donated to local social service groups and agencies.

Annual Appeal
Dear Friend,2011 Holiday Season
Since 1961, RHF (Retirement Housing Foundation) has become one of the nation’s largest non-profit housing providers with 165
communities in 25 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. We are home to over 17,000
residents who are older adults, low-income families, or persons with disabilities.
In celebration of our 50th anniversary, residents were asked to share how living in an RHF community has impacted their lives.
More than 800 residents responded. Below are a few examples:
“…Homelessness is no longer a threat to me or those I love. Today I am not only a mother, but a
college student…If I hadn’t found my place here, I wouldn’t know where else I would be. Thank you
RHF for providing me with a solid foundation for my family.” ” – Eileen
“I am no longer invisible, useless or unwanted. I was homeless for 9 years…I have been given a
second chance...I now have a home, not just an apartment.” – Frankie
“What a difference the move made for me…This has been a new life for me and also a new
beginning.” – Liz
“I do not have to choose between medicine and food, which I had to do in the past.” – Eveline
RHF takes pride in providing people with a home they can afford. We have accomplished a great deal in 50 years - yet the
number of those with housing needs steadily increases. In urban areas, we have hundreds of seniors on waiting lists now,
with the longest list being over 1,500 people!
Many residents come to us hopeless and fearful of what will become of them when their life takes a wrong turn. When they
discover an affordable place to live at an RHF community, they are relieved and a sense of pride and hope returns. I am
sure you can understand how very gratifying it is to see and hear about the difference that RHF can make in someone’s life.
I hope you will consider making a gift to support RHF. Your contribution is needed to provide and preserve affordable
housing for those in need. You can use the enclosed envelope or donate online at www.rhf.org.
On behalf of all the people we serve, I thank you for your generous spirit this holiday season. If you have any questions or
would like information regarding making a gift and its tax advantages, please call 562-257-5141.
Sincerely,
Laverne R. Joseph, RHF President & CEO
P.S. Donations from individuals like you help us continue our critical mission.

Responding To Disaster
On March 11, 2011 a horrific earthquake and tsunami devastated the northwest coastal region
of Japan. The scenes that came from that area and the ongoing crisis at Japan’s nuclear power
plant held the attention of much of the world for the days and weeks that followed.
As with the devastation that followed Hurricane Katrina in the gulf coast states, the National
Board of Directors felt that RHF needed to help those affected. It issued a challenge to its
residents across the country and UCC churches in the Southern California Nevada Conference –
any monies donated to RHF earmarked for disaster relief between March 15 and May 1
would be doubled by RHF.
In total $14,387.25 was donated by individuals and RHF communities. An additional $18,551.00
was donated by our partner UCC congregations. A grand total of $32,938.25 was donated to RHF
for Japan Disaster Relief. Based on our matching deadline of May 1st, a check for $65,010.50
was presented to the United Church of Christ’s Disaster Relief on Saturday, June 4th as part of the
Southern California Nevada UCC Conference Annual Meeting in La Jolla, California. An additional check for $675 was sent in June for funds received after the deadline. No funds were kept by
RHF for administration - 100% of the funds were distributed for disaster relief.
We would like to like to thank the following individuals, organizations and churches who donated:

5 Ways to Teach
Your Kids or Grandkids
About Giving
It’s never too early to get kids into the giving habit.
In this digital age, many parents and grandparents worry
that kids are more focused on getting than giving. Children’s
values and choices are shaped by the examples their parents
and grandparents provide. What are they learning from you
when it comes to giving? Here are 5 steps to help your kids or
grandkids learn the importance of giving to others.
1) Be an example. You are a role model. While kids may see
us volunteering and writing checks, it is important to tell them
why we are doing it. Take the time to explain how you choose a
charity for a donation or tell them about the fun you have had
volunteering (or better yet let them experience that with you). It’s
OK to show that sometimes giving involves sacrifices of time and
money. Be sure to share the satisfaction that being generous brings
to you.
2) Charity starts at home. Help kids learn how to give by helping
family members or neighbors. Encourage them to help their siblings
with projects, homework and the like. Work with them to donate
clothing, toys, books and technology they are no longer using to help others. Allow them to select
the clothes or toys they wish to donate. Take them with you when you drop the items off at the charitable
destination. Make sure they understand it’s not just about getting rid of old things — it’s about giving
these items to people in need.
3) Build on their interest. By nature we are more passionate about giving our time and money to
causes that are meaningful to us. What are your kids or grandkids really interested in? Animals?
Help them volunteer at a local animal shelter to pet and feed the animals or donate food, treats and
toys. Is it sports? Help them volunteer with youth sports clinics helping younger athletes or donate
sporting equipment to a local youth recreational facility.
4) Give together. Make giving a family tradition involving all generations. Save change in a big jar
and watch it grow. Then collectively decide as a family where your donation will go when the jar is
full. Invite them to share some of their allowance with others through donating to the jar. You might
show them brochures from local area nonprofits, explaining what each one does, and then let them
decide which organization they want to support. Help another family by creating food baskets to
donate, allowing them to assist in selecting canned goods, fruit, and other treats to include. Volunteer
together in your community. Make giving a family activity.
5) Make it a habit. Provide kids with regular opportunities to give and volunteer so that it becomes
a natural part of their lives. If they see you do it and hear you talk about it often, they will want to do
it too. Just like making them brush their teeth because it’s a healthy habit, we also need to encourage
giving because that’s good for them too.
By implementing these steps or others like them, you can teach your children or grandchildren that
charity is not reserved only for emergencies and holidays. You will be helping them appreciate that
helping others in need is a way of life, rather than a moment in time.

RHF Team Givers
Our staff members perform important daily duties to make shelter and service a reality for the people we serve.
Staff members who additionally choose to voluntarily support RHF through monetary donations are contributing
to the fiscal health of our mission. We are extremely grateful for their optional financial commitment as well as the
investment they already have made with their hearts, lives and careers.

Christmas is Just Around The Corner
Every child deserves to have a gift to open during the holiday season.
Each year through the generous donations of residents, staff and Mattel, Inc., toys
and gifts are given to the children living in our affordable family communities.
There are now more than 1,000 children who call an RHF communty “home”.
Playing “RHF Santa” is a big job - making our list and checking
it twice to ensure each child gets something to open. We even
have our own team of “elves” - The Wrappers, a group of
RHF
volunteers which includes staff, St. Mary Tower residents and
Advisory Commission Members, who donate their time to
sort, wrap and send these gifts across the country to our
family communities.
Since 1996, through the generosity of our RHF family and
friends, we have been privileged to provide gifts to thousands of children during the holiday season.
For many of our RHF children, the only present they receive
may be the one made possible by people like you!
To help light up the face of an RHF child this holiday season,
make a donation using the envelope included in this issue of RHF Today and designate your gift to Toys for
RHF Kids.
