Holiday Delight A Big Success
Greatwood News The publication of the Greatwood Community Association, Inc. January 2016 Holiday Delight A Big Success By Judy Holy A record number of Greatwood bales of hay and happy children, parents residents attended the first Holiday and grandparents around the field next to Rec. 1 Delight event on December 5th. Food trucks, Santa, DJ Elf and perfect weather made this a fun day for young and old alike. Safety and Security ....................... 5-15 Manager’s Corner ............................. 17 Special thanks goes to our wonderful Greatwood Community managers, Nikkole Luna and Wendy Sulak, who organized this event, and to Greatwood resident Greg Frazier who stepped in and helped put up all those chairs and The hayride was another really popular tables. event. It will be printed in two sections, a legend page, so you can see what the code is for each reported incident, and the report itself. You might see several reports that are not directly related to Greatwood, but are related to nearby neighborhoods outside the subdivision. These are included so you are more aware of what is happening both within and outside of Greatwood. They’ve gone on a hike, observed birds and nature, built birdhouses and have planted a tree. Planting a tree is a requirement to earn the Tiger badge. It teaches kids to take care of natural resources. Russell Sackett, of Sackett Tree Services coordinated everything, getting permission from the HOA to plant the tree and suggested that they plant a pecan as it would be a neat tree for the kids to come back to in years to come. On November 14th Den 14 arrived early at the Dickinson Butterfly Garden to do some clean up and then headed over to Knoll Park for the tree planting. There is nothing quite like the authentic Montessori Method for early education—and nothing quite like the results it yields. The school’s goal is to empower children to think for themselves and to develop their unique mind. Here, self-direction and self-discipline lead to self-discovery, as the personal interests of each child are embraced, celebrated, and nurtured. Their exceptional teachers are all Montessori-certified, gaining the skills to enhance each child’s independence, inspiration, and intelligence. SIGNIFICANT TIME IS SPENT WITH EACH CHILD, HELPING THEM TO PURSUE SELF-DIRECTED ACTIVITIES. When children are divided into classrooms, it is by age range, not by grade, so older children share their knowledge and inspire younger children about learning. This arrangement helps build social skills and encourages collaborative work. Further, the school has been designed to stimulate each child’s curiosity while providing creative, tactile experiences in three areas: Practical Life (basic movements, fine motor skills, concentration), Sensorial (refinement of all senses, such as visual, tactile, and auditory), and Academic (components of learning including language, math, and science). The school is now enrolling for winter and offering new families $100 off tuition.* Schedule a tour today. Overall, this unique approach to early education ensures that children are well-prepared for future academic pursuits and a lifetime of learning. We are currently looking for car owners and corporate sponsors for this event If you or your business (or both!) would like to be a part of our event, please contact Jill Underhill at [email protected] for information on car registration or to learn of the benefits for promotion of your business. Payments can be made through the GRHS PayPal account, [email protected] or you can submit a check payable to GRHS PTO. Please contact Dawn Pounders at [email protected] for more information. All proceeds directly benefit our band students and program. The GRBBC assists with funding events and programs such as the band’s performance at the Fort Bend County fair Parade, community and school contests, football games, trips, music festivals as well as help to purchase instruments and equipment as needed. These expenses can add up quickly and contributions from businesses like yours and our community are vital to ensuring a successful band program for our students. The students gathered for a school-wide assembly where Coach Rice was covered in miles of silly string and Assistant Principal Savant was turned into a human ice cream sundae, complete with whipped cream, chocolate syrup and sprinkles! “Serving Up Fresh Ideas” About Dickinson Elementary The Dickinson PTO Dolphin Dash Fun Run kicked off in November with an exciting Pep Rally. Powered by the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon, the program lasted about two weeks, included all students, taught them about leadership and character, while reinforcing the value of fitness in a fun, team building environment. During the Fun Run, students met for “team huddles” and learned about winning with teamwork, living with curiosity, scoring with practice, playing with humility, riding with confidence and running with endurance. ǡ ͷͿͿǡ Ǥ ͽͷͷͶ ǡǤ ǡǣ http://www.dickinsonpto.com/ ǡ Thank you Dickinson families, faculty and business sponsors for making the Boosterthon Dolphin Dash Fun Run, presented by Orthodontique, a huge success. Dickinson Elementary met and exceeded our fundraising goal! To date, we’ve collected more than $25,000 to fund fantastic field trips, state of the art technology and educational resources--and money is still coming in (as of Dec. 11, 2015 publishing deadline). One of the primary goals of the PTO is to enhance the educational opportunities for the students at Dickinson Elementary that are not provided for in the school corporate budgets. Thank you for your generosity and helping us achieve this goal. The Dolphin Dash Fun Run concluded with an exciting inschool run on December 4th--where kids ran a maximum of 35 laps on the Boosterthon Speedway, with support from friends and family making per lap pledges--helping us earn our fundraising goal. Houston Dynamo’s Diesel and Sugar Land Skeeters Swatson made an appearance to offer high fives and cheer on the kids. Dickinson Elementary students ran 16,889 laps, with an average of 34.47 laps run per child! Additionally, for every $30 per lap total a class reached, Boosterthon flew a pair of shoes to meet a child in another country...Dickinson Elementary sponsored 40 pairs of shoes to children in need across the world. Courtesy of our amazing business sponsors, each child received Boosterthon Dolphin Dash spirit wear, which were worn at the run and can also be worn on Fridays throughout the school year. The fun didn’t stop! For meeting the fundraising goal, students received a school-wide pajama day.
