Moulding Collection
A Lasting Legacy
Carl Trostel founded his lumber company in
Fort Collins’ business district in 1929. The flagship
store, on Linden Street, supplied lumber and building
materials to the growing Northern Colorado
construction industry. Bob Sears, son-in-law of Mr.
Trostel, took over management and operations in 1948, and
for the next 30 years, ownership remained with the Sears
family as the company became a mainstay of the downtown
business community.
In 1981, two employees, Steve Schwartz and Curt Viehmeyer,
purchased Sears Trostel Lumber from the Sears family and began to
transform the company. The partners recognized and responded to a
growing need for quality hardwood lumber and sheetgoods along the
Front Range and in mountain communities, and restructured the
company to better meet the demand. This resulted in a dramatic
expansion of the company’s moulding inventory and custom millwork
services throughout the 1980’s.
Strategic Growth
By the early 1990’s, Sears Trostel embarked on an aggressive expansion
strategy to serve a growing region beyond Fort Collins, and in April 1994,
opened a 40,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art lumber distribution and
moulding manufacturing facility on Airpark Drive in Fort Collins. Winter
2004 saw the relocation of the original Old Town location to a larger facility at
1500 Riverside Avenue.
Now employing over 40 people, Sears Trostel offers an array of products and
services to customers throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and parts of
Nebraska. The company’s offering includes custom millwork, hardwood
and softwood lumber, hardwood flooring, sheetgoods, woodworking tools and
supplies, hands-on instruction, classes, training and more. The company’s Lean
Manufacturing millwork facility is unmatched in the region, and its
customer-focused delivery systems allow the highest quality custom
mouldings to be delivered in the fastest, most efficient manner possible.
Though Northern Colorado has changed dramatically since 1929,
Sears Trostel continues to be a mainstay of a growing region, with a
commitment to quality and service that has remained unchanged
since day one.

Sears Trostel caters to a wide array of customer types,
from commercial clients, woodworkers, hobbyists to
the weekend do-it-yourselfer. We have an extensive

Custom Mouldings. Sears Trostel
has a moulding library of over 5000
profiles but can also manufacture custom
mouldings to customer specifications.
Custom mouldings are quoted case by case based
on size and complexity of the profile, wood species,
grade and lineal footage ordered.
Signature Moulding Collection. With our Signature
Collection of stock mouldings you can design a whole
new look for a room and install it tomorrow. This collection
combines several industry “standards” with some of our more
distinctive designs. We added some design building blocks - such
as back bands and base caps - that customers can use to create
their own moulding “build-ups:’ And we produced them in a
variety of sizes and wood species to make them a perfect fit for any
home. It’s easy to mix and match these moulding profiles to create a

Millwork Services. Need millwork services on your next project? Sears
Trostel offers a variety of millwork services, adding greater value to your
products. We offer custom surfacing, straightline-ripping, gang-ripping,
resawing, custom planing and shaping, as well as wide belt and profile
sanding services.
Arched & Curved Mouldings. If your millwork package requires specialty
curved or arched moulding, Sears Trostel can provide you with - casing
for arch-top doors or windows, curved base and crown, curved hand rail
and bar rail, tapered treads for spiral staircases, arched door jambs and
much more.
Hardwood Lumber & Plywood. With a great selection of quality
hardwood lumber and plywood, you won’t need to make multiple stops to
get all that you need for your next project. From domestic species such as
alder, red oak, hard maple and cherry to exotic or tropical species such as
padauk, bubinga, mahogany and purpleheart, you’ll find over 40 species
in stock.
Woodworking Tools & Supplies. Whether you are a professional or
just a woodworking enthusiast, we have all the tools and supplies you
need. Our Riverside location carries furniture and cabinet hardware,
the highest quality powered stationary and hand tools from
Festool, General Tools, SawStop, Amana and Bosch, glues and
clamps, abrasives, finishes, and many more great products.
Michigan Maple Butcher Block. Sears Trostel has become a
distributor for the Michigan Maple Block Company,
maker of the fine line of prefinished butcher block
tables, countertops and island tops. We also have the
capability to offer such value-adding services as
cutting the butcher blocks to custom shapes,
cutting opening for sinks, milling
decorative edges, and much more.

that promotes responsible management of the world’s working forests. Forest
certification is a process where landowners and manufacturers invite thirdparty auditors to certify that their practices meet internationally recognized
standards for responsible forest management.
