As director, I’m charged with leading Birch Aquarium at Scripps along the path
to greater sustainability. Any business owner will tell you how challenging this
can be, but it’s vital for all life on Earth that we continue making progress.

I’d like to share some of what we’ve accomplished so far:
% Clean electricity from rooftop solar panels offsets up to 10% of the aquarium’s energy use.
% We use a hybrid truck to transport animals and exhibit materials.
% Splash Café’s menu includes a selection of organic, locally sourced, and/or sustainably
harvested items.
% Energy-saving light switches turn off lights in offices when they’re not in use.
% We recycle exhibit materials and use recycled materials as much as possible in new exhibits.
®
% Paper used for aquarium print materials is FSC - certified to the extent possible.
% The furniture in Boundless Energy is made from reclaimed plastic milk jugs; benches throughout the rest of the facility are made of sustainably harvested teak.
% All lighting in our parking lot has been replaced with energy-efficient bulbs.
% Birch Aquarium is a new collection site for EcoCell, a company that properly disposes of
old electronics so they don’t wind up polluting landfills. Visit aquarium.ucsd.edu for a list of
items we can accept.
In March, the California Center for Sustainable Energy recognized our efforts with its annual
Sustainable Community Leadership Award. I couldn’t be more proud of our staff and volunteers,
who share my deep commitment to this effort. But we’re far from the finish line.
Embracing sustainability is an ongoing process, and Birch Aquarium at Scripps is committed to
the journey. Please send us any of your ideas for making the aquarium more efficient, and visit
aquarium.ucsd.edu/blog for updates on our progress!

ocean temperatures reveals the global ocean
has been warming for more than a century.

how warm our oceans are getting, where all
that heat is going, and how this knowledge
will help scientists better understand Earth’s
climate. Learn how scientists measured
ocean temperature during the historic voyage of the HMS Challenger (1872-76) and
how today’s network of ocean-probing robots
is changing the way scientists study the seas.

We’re dedicating this month to one of
our favorite locals—the leopard shark!
Thousands of these amazing sharks
congregate every year near La Jolla Shores
to spawn. Celebrate the leopard shark all
month long with special activities, lectures,
underwater excursions, and exclusive
interactions with Scripps Oceanography
researcher Andy Nosal, who studies these
spotted beauties (look for the leopard shark
icon to “spot” specially themed events). Visit
our website for our daily schedule.
THURSDAY
Summertime in San Diego means the return
of leopard sharks to La Jolla Shores. Contrary
to popular belief, these sharks – 97% of
which are pregnant females – are not giving
birth or mating during their stay. Join Andy
Nosal, a Scripps Ph.D. student who studies
local leopards, to find out what scientists really think is going on. Discover what gadgets
Nosal uses to track the sharks and learn what
makes La Jolla the animals’ preferred hang
out. Find out why this shark population is particularly vulnerable and how the local no-take
