Test Notes & General Procedure
The purpose of this test was to allow the markings to fully
cure before attempting to clean them off.
The first test specimen was a used aluminum plate,
which was neither polished or rough.
The test also included several discus plates of various
materials: aluminum, bead-blasted aluminum,
anodized aluminum, ABS plastic, fiberglass, painted
fiberglass, carbon fiber, gel-coated fiberglass & wood.
A grid of markings was made on the plate.
The positions of the markings within each cell was
consistent with regard to make and color.
Groups of markings were made on all the discus
plates, and numbered.
The aluminum plate contained red & black markings,
the discus plates contained mostly black markings,
but some red was used, and a metallic silver Sharpie
was used on the black plates.
The test specimens were kept indoors during June due
to the local weather conditions. They were left outdoors
during July & August. The cleaning test was performed
in early September.
A reduced set of cleaners was used from the first cleaning
test in 2009, eliminating the poor performers. All
cleaning was performed with cotton balls.
In some cases, the cleaner left a noticeable residue,
virtually identical to the 2009 test. Therefore no
comments about the residue were made in this report.
The evaluation of the results (Excellent, Good, Fair,
Poor) was somewhat subjective, but was made
consistently by one person.
